Evolving a New Electron Transfer Pathway for Nitrogen Fixation Uncovers an Electron Bifurcating-Like Enzyme Involved in Anaerobic Aromatic Compound Degradation

There is increasing evidence that protein electron carriers like Fd evolved to form specific partnerships with select electron donors and acceptors to keep native electron transfer pathways insulated from one another. This makes it challenging to integrate a Fd-dependent pathway such as biological nitrogen fixation into non-nitrogen-fixing organisms and provide the high-energy reducing power needed to fix nitrogen.

Enzyme Discovery in Anaerobic Fungi (Neocallimastigomycetes) Enables Lignocellulosic Biorefinery Innovation

Lignocellulosic biorefineries require innovative solutions to realize their full potential, and the discovery of novel lignocellulose-active enzymes could improve biorefinery deconstruction processes. Enzymatic deconstruction of plant cell walls is challenging, as noncarbohydrate linkages in hemicellulosic sidechains and lignin protect labile carbohydrates from hydrolysis.

Complete Genome Sequence of Desulfobulbus oligotrophicus Prop6, an Anaerobic Deltabacterota Strain That Lacks Mercury Methylation Capability

Desulfobulbus oligotrophicus Prop6 is a sulfate-reducing, propionate-oxidizing Deltabacterota (formerly Deltaproteobacteria) strain from sewage sludge. Desulfobulbus species are found in anoxic environments, in animal microbiota, and some produce the neurotoxin methylmercury. The 3.1-Mbp D. oligotrophicus genome sequence enables studies of diverse environmental adaptations and the evolutionary genomics of mercury methylation mechanisms.

Complete Genome Sequence of Sulfurospirillum Strain ACS TCE , a Tetrachloroethene-Respiring Anaerobe Isolated from Contaminated Soil

Here, we report the complete genome sequence of the tetrachloroethene-to-trichloroethene dechlorinator Sulfurospirillum sp. strain ACS TCE . The genome consists of a 38.05-kb circular plasmid and a 2.69-Mb circular chromosome, which encodes 3 identical reductive dehalogenases with 91.47% amino acid identity to the PceA of Sulfurospirillum multivorans strain DSM 12446.

Complete Genome Sequence of Sulfurospirillum sp. Strain ACS DCE , an Anaerobic Bacterium That Respires Tetrachloroethene under Acidic pH Conditions

Sulfurospirillum sp. strain ACS DCE couples growth with reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene to cis-1,2-dichloroethene at pH values as low as 5.5. The genome sequence of strain ACS DCE consists of a circular 2,737,849-bp chromosome and a 39,868-bp plasmid and carries 2,737 protein-coding sequences, including two reductive dehalogenase genes.

TCF High Efficiency Anaerobic Electroporation

The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) researchers were co-inventors of the technology that will be used on this project and have developed a more current version of the chip and controller. JBEI will also assist with the design of the pathways and implementation of pathways on the chip. LanzaTech has developed novel gas fermentation technology that captures and utilizes greenhouse gases for production of fuels and chemicals. In contrast to traditional fermentation that uses sugars as substrate (and releases CO2 as a byproduct), gas fermentation utilizes C1 substrates carbon monoxide (CO) or CO2. This enables a diverse range of feedstock options including waste gases from industrial sources (e.g., steel mills and processing plants) or syngas generated from any biomass resource (e.g., agricultural waste, municipal solid waste, or organic industrial waste). Biomass is then gasified, allowing for maximum yields and complete carbon utilization including the recalcitrant lignocellulosic fraction that cannot be utilized in traditional sugar fermentation.

TCF High Efficiency Anaerobic Electroporation (CRADA Final Report)

To maximize the value that can be added to the array of gas resources that the LanzaTech process can use as an input, LanzaTech has pioneered genetic modification of acetogens and developed a comprehensive set of genetic tools to perform routine strain modification, including genome editing tools as CRISPR/Cas9 and libraries of validated genetic parts as promoters and terminators. Using this platform, production of over 50 new molecules have been demonstrated directly from gas. For a few selected molecules production rates and yields have been optimized and surpass production of native producers and engineered E. coli or yeast strains, but a higher throughput approach for combinatorial optimization of pathways is required to further advance synthesis of additional products in parallel.

Updates to Anaerobic Digestion Pathways for Animal Manure in R&D GREET 2025 Rev.1

Renewable natural gas (RNG) produced from animal manure can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector, but accurate life cycle assessment (LCA) of this fuel depends on precise modeling of emissions from business-as-usual (BAU) manure manage ment. This report documents updates to the Research & Development version of the Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Technologies (R&D GREET) model that attempt to improve that precision.
