Measurement of single top-quark production in association with a W boson in the single-lepton channel at $\sqrt{s} = 8\,\text {TeV}$ with the ATLAS detector

The production cross-section of a top quark in association with a W boson is measured using proton–proton collisions at √s = 8TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb –1 , and was collected in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The analysis is performed in the single-lepton channel. Events are selected by requiring one isolated lepton (electron or muon) and at least three jets. A neural network is trained to separate the tW signal from the dominant tt¯ background. The cross-section is extracted from a binned profile maximum-likelihood fit to a two-dimensional discriminant built from the neural-network output and the invariant mass of the hadronically decaying W boson. The measured cross-section is σ tW = 26 ± 7pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Celestial operator product expansions and w 1+∞ symmetry for all spins

The operator product expansion of massless celestial primary operators of arbitrary spin is investigated. Poincaré symmetry is found to imply a set of recursion relations on the operator product expansion coefficients of the leading singular terms at tree-level in a holomorphic limit. The symmetry constraints are solved by an Euler beta function with arguments that depend simply on the right-moving conformal weights of the operators in the product. These symmetry-derived coefficients are shown not only to match precisely those arising from momentum-space tree-level collinear limits, but also to obey an infinite number of additional symmetry transformations that respect the algebra of w 1+∞ . In tree-level minimally-coupled gravitational theories, celestial currents are constructed from light transforms of conformally soft gravitons and found to generate the action of w 1+∞ on arbitrary massless celestial primaries. Results include operator product expansion coefficients for fermions as well as those arising from higher-derivative non-minimal couplings of gluons and gravitons.

Perturbatively exact $w_{1+∞}$ asymptotic symmetry of quantum self-dual gravity

The infinite tower of positive-helicity soft gravitons in any minimally coupled, tree-level, asymptotically flat four-dimensional (4D) gravity was recently shown to generate a w 1+∞ asymptotic symmetry algebra. It is natural to ask whether this classical algebra acquires quantum corrections at loop level. We explore this in quantum self-dual gravity, whose amplitudes acquire known one-loop exact all-plus helicity quantum corrections. We show using collinear splitting formulae that, remarkably, the w 1+∞ algebra persists in quantum self-dual gravity without corrections.

CFT correlators, $\mathcal{W}$-algebras and generalized Catalan numbers

In two spacetime dimensions the Virasoro heavy-heavy-light-light (HHLL) vacuum block in a certain limit is governed by the Catalan numbers. The equation for their generating function can be generalized to a differential equation which the logarithm of the block satisfies. We show that a similar story holds for the HHLL $\mathcal{W}_N$ vacuum blocks, where a suitable generalization of the Catalan numbers plays the main role. Moreover, the $\mathcal{W}_N$ blocks have the same form as the stress tensor sector of HHLL near lightcone conformal correlators in 2(N – 1) spacetime dimensions. In the latter case the Catalan numbers are generalized to the numbers of linear extensions of certain partially ordered sets.

Search for heavy resonances decaying into a Z or W boson and a Higgs boson in final states with leptons and b -jets in 139 fb –1 of pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This article presents a search for new resonances decaying into a Z or W boson and a 125 GeV Higgs boson h, and it targets the $ν\bar{ν}b\bar{b}, l^{+} l^{-} b\bar{b}$, or $ll^{±} νb\bar{b}$ final states, where $\ell$ = e or µ, in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The data used correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the LHC at CERN. The search is conducted by examining the reconstructed invariant or transverse mass distributions of Zh or W h candidates for evidence of a localised excess in the mass range from 220 GeV to 5 TeV. No significant excess is observed and 95% confidence-level upper limits between 1.3 pb and 0.3 fb are placed on the production cross section times branching fraction of neutral and charged spin-1 resonances and CP-odd scalar bosons. These limits are converted into constraints on the parameter space of the Heavy Vector Triplet model and the two-Higgs-doublet model.

Search for direct pair production of sleptons and charginos decaying to two leptons and neutralinos with mass splittings near the $W$-boson mass in $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for the electroweak production of pairs of charged sleptons or charginos decaying into two-lepton final states with missing transverse momentum is presented. Two simplified models of R-parity-conserving supersymmetry are considered: direct pair-production of sleptons ($\sim\atop{\ell}$$\sim\atop{\ell}$), with each decaying into a charged lepton and a $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$ neutralino, and direct pair-production of the lightest charginos ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$ $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{∓}_{1}$), with each decaying into a W-boson and a $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$. The lightest neutralino ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). The analyses target the experimentally challenging mass regions where $m$($\sim\atop{\ell}$) - $m$($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) and ($m$$\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$) – )$m$$\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) are close to the W-boson mass (‘moderately compressed’ regions). The search uses 139 fb –1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excesses over the expected background are observed. Exclusion limits on the simplified models under study are reported in the ($\sim\atop{\ell}$, $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) and ($\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{±}_{1}$, $\sim\atop{\chi}$ $^{0}_{1}$) mass planes at 95% confidence level (CL). Sleptons with masses up to 150 GeV are excluded at 95% CL for the case of a mass-splitting between sleptons and the LSP of 50 GeV. Chargino masses up to 140 GeV are excluded at 95% CL for the case of a mass-splitting between the chargino and the LSP down to about 100 GeV.

Development of an interatomic potential for the W–Ta system

A physics-inspired, data-driven interatomic potential framework for multi-element system is presented. This potential is based on the generalization of the embedded atom method potential and systematically incorporates two-, three- and many-body effects. Different atomic environments are described by atom-centered Gaussian basis sets which provides sufficient flexibility to capture diverse atomic environments and allows for easy optimization of the free parameters. An interatomic potential model for the tungsten–tantalum (W–Ta) system is developed using this framework by training on data from ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The potential is thoroughly tested at various compositions by comparing bulk and defect properties from experimental and DFT data. It is shown that the potential predicts the elastic constants, defect properties, such as vacancy and interstitial formation energies, core structures of dislocations, and melting points for both pure and tantalum and tungsten with an accuracy comparable to other single element machine learning based potentials. In conclusion, the potential model is used to investigate the formation energies of ordered alloys and vacancy formation energies for chemically random W–Ta alloys.

Constructing Ultrathin W-Doped NiFe Nanosheets via Facile Electrosynthesis as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Efficient Water Splitting

Exploring cost-effective and efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts via simple fabrication strategies is strongly desired for practical water splitting. Herein, an easy and fast one-step electrodeposition process is developed to fabricate W-doped NiFe (NiFeW)-layered double hydroxides with ultrathin nanosheet features at room temperature and ambient pressure as bifunctional catalysts for water splitting. Notably, the NiFeW nanosheets require overpotentials of only 239 and 115 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively, to reach a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 in alkaline media. Their exceptional performance is further demonstrated in a full electrolyzer configuration with the NiFeW as both anode and cathode catalysts, which achieves a low cell voltage of 1.59 V at 10 mA/cm 2 , 110 mV lower than that of the commercial IrO 2 (anode) and Pt (cathode) catalysts. Moreover, the NiFeW nanosheets are superior to various recently reported bifunctional electrocatalysts. Such remarkable performances mainly ascribe to W doping, which not only effectively modulates the electrocatalyst morphology but also engineers the electronic structure of NiFe hydroxides to boost charge-transfer kinetics for both the OER and HER. Hence, the ultrathin NiFeW nanosheets with an efficient fabrication strategy are promising as bifunctional electrodes for alkaline water electrolyzers.

Symmetry-mediated quantum coherence of W 5+ spins in an oxygen-deficient double perovskite

Elucidating the factors limiting quantum coherence in real materials is essential to the development of quantum technologies. Here we report a strategic approach to determine the effect of lattice dynamics on spin coherence lifetimes using oxygen deficient double perovskites as host materials. In addition to obtaining millisecond T 1 spin-lattice lifetimes at T ~ 10 K, measurable quantum superpositions were observed up to room temperature. We determine that T 2 enhancement in Sr 2 CaWO 6-δ over previously studied Ba 2 CaWO 6-δ is caused by a dynamically-driven increase in effective site symmetry around the dominant paramagnetic site, assigned as W 5+ via electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Further, a combination of experimental and computational techniques enabled quantification of the relative strength of spin-phonon coupling of each phonon mode. This analysis demonstrates the effect of thermodynamics and site symmetry on the spin lifetimes of W 5+ paramagnetic defects, an important step in the process of reducing decoherence to produce longer-lived qubits.

W-band system-on-chip electron cyclotron emission imaging system on DIII-D

Monolithic, millimeter wave “system-on-chip” (SoC) technology has been employed in heterodyne receiver integrated circuit radiometers in a newly developed Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) system on the DIII-D tokamak for 2D electron temperature profile and fluctuation evolution diagnostics. Here, a prototype module operating in E-band (72-80 GHz) was first employed in a 2 x 10 element array that demonstrated significant improvements over the previous quasi-optical Schottky diode mixer arrays during the 2018 operational campaign of the DIII-D tokamak. For compatibility with International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) relevant scenarios on DIII-D, the SoC ECEI system was upgraded with 20 horn-waveguide receiver modules. Each individual module contains a University of California at Davis designed W-band (75 -110 GHz) receiver die that integrates a broadband low noise amplifier (LNA), a double balanced down-converting mixer, and a x4 multiplier on the local oscillator (LO) chain. A x2 multiplier and two IF amplifiers are packaged and selected to further boost the signal strength as well as downconvert the signal frequency. The upgraded W-band array exhibits > 30 dB additional gain and 20x improvement in noise temperature comparing with the previous Schottky diode radio frequency (RF) mixer input systems; an internal 8 times multiplier chain is used to bring down the LO frequency below 12 GHz, thereby obviating the need for a large aperture for quasi-optical LO coupling and replacing it with coaxial connectors. The horn-waveguide shielding housing avoids out-of-band noise interference on each individual module. The upgraded ECEI system plays an important role for absolute electron temperature evolution and fluctuation measurements for edge and core region transport physics studies.

Understanding PDF uncertainty in W boson mass measurements*

Abstract We study the dependence of the transverse mass distribution of charged leptons and the missing energy on parton distributions (PDFs) adapted to W boson mass measurements at the CDF and ATLAS experiments. We compare the shape variations of the distribution induced by different PDFs and find that the spread of predictions from different PDF sets can be significantly larger than the PDF uncertainty predicted by a specific PDF set. We suggest analyzing the experimental data using up-to-date PDFs to gain a better understanding of the PDF uncertainties in W boson mass measurements. We also perform a series of Lagrange multiplier scans to identify the constraints on the transverse mass distribution imposed by individual data sets in the CT18 global analysis. In the case of the CDF measurement, the distribution is mostly sensitive to d -quark PDFs in the intermediate x region, which are largely constrained by DIS and Drell-Yan data on deuteron targets and Tevatron lepton charge asymmetry data.

Competing energetic states in γ – Fe 2 W O 6 with strong spin-charge-lattice coupling

We report magnetic and electronic properties of γ – Fe 2 W O 6 via neutron powder-diffraction measurements and first-principles density-function theory calculations. We reveal a magnetic ground state with two phases coexisting in which the minor phase is the same as an earlier report, despite the fact that both materials studied have the same space group but with slightly different atomic positions. Interestingly, both magnetic phases are well captured by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, we show that these two magnetic phases are correlated with electronic properties, with one being insulating and the other being metallic. These features suggest that γ – Fe 2 W O 6 exhibits competing energetic states in which spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are strongly coupled to each other.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of $W$ Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in $\sqrt3$ = TeV $pp$ Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton ($\mathscr{N}$) in 139 fb -1 of $\sqrt3$ = TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The $\mathscr{N}$ is produced via W → $\mathscr{N}$ μ or W → $\mathscr{N}$e and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The $\mathscr{N}$ mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. No signal is observed, and limits are set on the squared mixing parameters of the $\mathscr{N}$ with the left-handed neutrino states for the $\mathscr{N}$ mass range 3 GeV < $m$ $\mathscr{N}$ < 15 GeV. For the first time, limits are given for both single-flavor and multiflavor mixing scenarios motivated by neutrino flavor oscillation results for both the normal and inverted neutrino-mass hierarchies.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a single top quark and an energetic W boson in $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV $pp$ collisions with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a search for dark matter, $χ$, using events with a single top quark and an energetic W boson. The analysis is based on proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV during LHC Run 2 (2015–2018), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The search considers final states with zero or one charged lepton (electron or muon), at least one $b$-jet and large missing transverse momentum. In addition, a result from a previous search considering two-charged-lepton final states is included in the interpretation of the results. The data are found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and the results are interpreted in terms of 95% confidence-level exclusion limits in the context of a class of dark matter models involving an extended two Higgs-doublet sector together with a pseudoscalar mediator particle. The search is particularly sensitive to on-shell pro duction of the charged Higgs boson state, $H$ ± , arising from the two-Higgs-doublet mixing, and its semi-invisible decays via the mediator particle, $a$: $H$ ± → $W$ ± $a$(→ $χ$ $χ$). Signal models with $H$ ± masses up to 1.5 TeV and a masses up to 350 GeV are excluded assuming a tan $β$ value of 1. For masses of a of 150 (250) GeV, tan $β$ values up to 2 are excluded for $H$ ± masses between 200 (400) GeV and 1.5 TeV. Signals with tan $β$ values between 20 and 30 are excluded for $H$ ± masses between 500 and 800 GeV.

Deformed $w_{1+\infty}$ Algebras in the Celestial CFT

We compute the modification of the w 1+∞ algebra of soft graviton, gluon and scalar currents in the celestial CFT due to non-minimal couplings. We find that the Jacobi identity is satisfied only when the spectrum and couplings of the theory obey certain constraints. We comment on the similarities and essential differences of this algebra to W 1+∞ .
