Detection of Rift Valley fever viral activity in Kenya by satellite remote sensing imagery

Data from the advanced very high resolution radiometer on board the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's polar-orbiting meteorological satellites have been used to infer ecological parameters associated with Rift Valley fever (RVF) viral activity in Kenya. An indicator of potential viral activity was produced from satellite data for two different ecological regions in Kenya, where RVF is enzootic. The correlation between the satellite-derived green vegetation index and the ecological parameters associated with RVF virus suggested that satellite data may become a forecasting tool for RVF in Kenya and, perhaps, in other areas of sub-Saharan Africa.

Application of Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer vegetation index to study atmosphere-biosphere exchange of CO2

Normalized difference vegetation indices derived from radiances measured by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer were used to prescribe the phasing of terrestrial photosynthesis. The satellite data were combined with field data on soil respiration and a global map of net primary productivity to obtain the seasonal exchange of CO2 between the atmosphere and the terrestrial biosphere. The monthly fluxes of CO2 thus obtained were employed as source/sink functions in a global three-dimensional atmospheric tracer transport model to simulate the annual oscillations of CO2 in the atmosphere. The results demonstrate that satellite data of high spatial and temporal resolution can be used to provide quantitative information about seasonal and longer-term variations of photosynthetic activity on a global scale.

Monitoring vegetation using Nimbus-7 scanning mutichannel microwave radiometer's data

Field studies and radiative transfer model calculations have shown that brightness temperature at high microwave frequencies is strongly affected by vegetation. The daytime observations for six consecutive years (1979 to 1984) over the Sahara, Senegalese Sahel, Burkina Fasso (Upper Volta), and U.S. Southern Great Plains at 37 GHz frequency of the Sanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) on board the Nimbus-7 satellite are analyzed, and a high correlation with the normalized difference vegetation index derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer on board the NOAA-7 satellite is found. The SMMR data appear to provide a valuable new long-term global data set for monitoring vegetation. In particular, the differing responses of vegetation (for example, annual grasses versus woody plants) to drought and the stability of the desert/steppe boundary of northern Africa might be studied using the time series data.

Fast autotuning of a hydrogen maser by cavity Q modulation

A new fast autotuner for the hydrogen maser was implemented. By modulating the cavity, a phase shift in the maser output signal is induced which is proportional to the cavity tuning error. The phase shift is detected and fed back to a varactor tuner to stabilize the cavity against long-term drifts. Also, a PIN-diode cavity modulator which gives no incidental frequency shift over a very wide range of operation was developed. Modulated at over 200 Hz, it allows variations in maser cavity frequency to be compensated with a loop gain greater than 1000. Compensation of incidental amplitude modulation of the output was demonstrated.

The development of test methodology for testing glassy materials

The inherent brittleness of glass invariably leads to a large variability in strength data and a time dependence in strength (i.e., static fatigue). Loading rate plays a large role in strength values. Glass is found to be weaker when supporting loads over long periods as compared to glass which undergoes rapid loading. In this instance the purpose of rapid loading is to fail the glass before any significant crack growth occurs. However, a decrease in strength occurs with a decrease in loading rate, pursuant to substantial crack extension. These properties complicate the structural design allowable for the utilization of glass components in applications such as mirrors for the Space Telescope and AXAF for Spacelab and the space station.

Monitoring global vegetation using Nimbus-7 37 GHz data - Some empirical relations

The difference of the vertically and horizontally polarized brightness temperatures observed by the 37 GHz channel of the SMMR on board the Nimbus-7 satellite are correlated temporally with three indicators of vegetation density, namely the temporal variation of the atmospheric CO2 concentration at Mauna Loa (Hawaii), rainfall over the Sahel and the normalized difference vegetation index derived from the AVHRR on board the NOAA-7 satellite. SMMR 37 GHz and AVHRR provide complementary data sets for monitoring global vegetation, the 37 GHz data being more suitable for arid and semiarid regions as these data are more sensitive to changes in sparse vegetation. The 37-GHz data might be useful for understanding desertification and indexing Co2 exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere.

Satellite observed seasonal and inter-annual variation of vegetation over the Kalahari, the Great Victoria Desert, and the Great Sandy Desert - 1979-1984

Time-series observations by two spaceborne sensors over three desert regions, the Kalahari (in southern Africa) and the Great Victoria Desert and the Great Sandy Desert (in western Australia), are presented. The observations are by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer on board the NOAA-7 satellite from April 1982 to December 1984, and by the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer on board the Nimbus-7 satellite from January 1979 to February 1985. The objective was to compare and contrast seasonal and interannual variation of vegetation over these three deserts using the normalized difference vegetation index and the 37 GHz brightness temperature. The seasonal variation from both sensors was found to be most pronounced over the Kalahari, followed by the Great Sandy Desert and the Great Victoria Desert. The normalized difference vegetation index was roughly identical over the two Australian deserts and was significantly higher for the Kalahari. There was no consistent change from both sensors over the two Australian deserts, but a consistent decrease from 1979 to 1984 over the Kalahari was found in the 37 GHz microwave data.

Satellite remote sensing of drought conditions

Multitemporal satellite data have application in the detection and quantification of drought through the ability of these data to estimate the photosynthetic capacity of the terrestrial surface and record microwave surface brightness at the 37 GHz frequency. With proper calibration and registration, comparisons can be made between and among years for specific months using the photosynthetic capacity and the 37 GHz microwave surface brightness for selected time periods or growing seasons. This technology has application in identifying and quantifying areas experiencing drought.

Aeolian weathering of Venusian surface materials - Preliminary results from laboratory simulations

An attempt is made to duplicate the atmospheric temperature, pressure, and approximate gas composition of all surface elevations on Venus by means of a simulator environment in which particles are impacted against rock targets as a way of studying planetary aeolian processes. While particles are abraded even at the low impact velocities envisioned for Venus, the same particles do not generate basaltic rock abrasion for impact velocities lower than 1 m/sec; comminution debris is instead transferred onto rock surfaces to form an accretion layer. These phenomena are seen as functions of the greater than 660 K temperatures encountered.

Boolean integral calculus

The concept of Boolean integration is developed, and different Boolean integral operators are introduced. Given the changes in a desired function in terms of the changes in its arguments, the ways of 'integrating' (i.e. realizing) such a function, if it exists, are presented. The necessary and sufficient conditions for integrating, in different senses, the expression specifying the changes are obtained. Boolean calculus has applications in the design of logic circuits and in fault analysis.

Production of the diffuse X-ray background spectrum by active galactic nuclei

This paper proposes a class of models in which the intensity and spectrum of the X-ray background radiation between 0.2 and 160 keV can be produced by active galactic nuclei. The key assumption of these models is that the spectra of active galactic nuclei are not described by a single power law. No evolution of the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei is required.

Manned Mars Mission program concepts

This paper describes the SRS Manned Mars Mission and Program Analysis study designed to support a manned expedition to Mars contemplated by NASA for the purposes of initiating human exploration and eventual habitation of this planet. The capabilities of the interactive software package being presently developed by the SRS for the mission/program analysis are described, and it is shown that the interactive package can be used to investigate the impact of various mission concepts on the sensitivity of mass required in LEO, schedules, relative costs, and risk. The results, to date, indicate the need for an earth-to-orbit transportation system much larger than the present STS, reliable long-life support systems, and either advanced propulsion or aerobraking technology.

Measuring Mechanical Properties Of Optical Glasses

Report discusses mechanical tests measuring parameters of strength and fracture mechanics of optical glasses. To obtain required tables of mechanical properties of each glass of interest, both initial-strength and delayed-fracture techniques used. Modulus of rupture measured by well-known four-point bending method. Initial bending strength measured by lesser-known double-ring method, in which disk of glass supported on one face near edge by larger ring and pressed on its other face by smaller concentric ring. Method maximizes stress near center, making it more likely specimen fractures there, and thereby suppresses edge effects. Data from tests used to predict reliabilities and lifetimes of glass optical components of several proposed spaceborne instruments.
