Search for new physics in the final state with a single photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 =13 TeV

A search for new physics in events featuring a single photon and missing transverse momentum is presented, using proton-proton √𝑠 =13 TeV collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb −1 collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC between 2017 and 2018. This analysis, combined with a previous study of 36 fb −1 of 2016 data (totaling 137 fb −1 ), reveals no significant deviations from standard model expectations. The results are then used to establish 95% confidence level limits on parameters in theoretical models involving dark matter and large extra dimensions. Compared to the 2016-only analysis, this search achieves up to a 14% improvement in exclusion reach for mediator masses in simplified dark matter models, along with 11% and 10% enhancements in the limits on the effective field theory suppression scale and the fundamental Planck scale, respectively. These results are the most stringent constraints on these parameters to date.

Third moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from physical-point lattice QCD

Using forward matrix elements of local leading-twist operators, we present a determination of the isovector third Mellin moments ⟨𝑥 2 ⟩ of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used, which were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2+1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. Leveraging a wide set of operators, two extraction methods for the matrix elements, and the automatic inclusion of model uncertainties via bootstrapped model averages, we extract values of the third Mellin moments. Furthermore, this is the first direct calculation of these observables performed at the physical pion mass.

Long-Range Transverse-Momentum Correlations and Radial Flow in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

This Letter presents measurements of long-range transverse-momentum correlations using a new observable, 𝑣 0⁡ (𝑝 T ), serving as a probe of event-by-event radial-flow fluctuations, the underlying radial expansion, and the medium’s properties in heavy-ion collisions. Results are reported for inclusive charged particles, pions, kaons, and protons across various centrality intervals in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV, recorded by the ALICE detector. A pseudorapidity-gap technique, similar to that used in anisotropic-flow studies, is employed to suppress short-range correlations. At low 𝑝 T , a characteristic mass ordering consistent with hydrodynamic collective flow is observed. At higher 𝑝 T (>3 GeV/𝑐), protons exhibit larger 𝑣 0 ⁡(𝑝 T ) than pions and kaons, in agreement with expectations from quark-recombination models. Comparisons to viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying bulk viscosity and equation of state demonstrate the sensitivity of the 𝑣 0 ⁡(𝑝 T ) observable to these key medium properties. The findings establish 𝑣 0 ⁡(𝑝 T ) as a valuable addition to the set of observables used in Bayesian analyses for extracting the transport properties and constraining the equation of state of strongly interacting matter, while also helping to systematically explore its sensitivity and impact within such global studies.

Spontaneously Broken Noninvertible Symmetries in Transverse-Field Ising Qudit Chains

Recent developments have revealed that symmetries need not form a group, but instead can be noninvertible. Here we use analytical arguments and numerical evidence to illuminate how spontaneous symmetry breaking of a noninvertible symmetry is similar yet distinct from ordinary, invertible, symmetry breaking. We consider one-dimensional chains of group-valued qudits, whose local Hilbert space is spanned by elements of a finite group 𝐺 (reducing to ordinary qubits when 𝐺=ℤ 2 ). We construct Ising-type transverse-field Hamiltonians with Rep⁡(𝐺) symmetry whose generators multiply according to the tensor product of irreducible representations (irreps) of the group 𝐺 . For non-Abelian 𝐺 , the symmetry is noninvertible. In the symmetry broken phase there is one ground state per irrep on a closed chain. The symmetry breaking can be detected by local order parameters but, unlike the invertible case, different ground states have distinct entanglement patterns. We show that for each irrep of dimension greater than one the corresponding ground state exhibits string order, entanglement spectrum degeneracies, and has gapless edge modes on an open chain—features usually associated with symmetry-protected topological order. Consequently, domain wall excitations behave as one-dimensional non-Abelian anyons with nontrivial internal Hilbert spaces and fusion rules. Our Letter identifies properties of noninvertible symmetry breaking that existing quantum hardware can probe.

Wilson Prize article: Transverse phase-space manipulations in electron accelerators

I am honored and grateful that my contributions to phase-space manipulations in general, and emittance compensation specifically, have been recognized by the Wilson Prize. The purpose of this article is to bring together what I believe to be the most important elements of the broad topic of transverse phase-space manipulations, focusing on the underlying beam physics which enable these types of schemes. We see that emittance compensation can be categorized as an example of the larger class of nonsymplectic manipulations. While the discussion is specifically focused on electron beams, much of the physics can also pertain to ion beams.

Current-driven transverse domain wall oscillations in perpendicular spin-valve structures

Spin-transfer-driven oscillations of a transverse domain wall confined to a perpendicular spin-valve structure are investigated using a one-dimensional model. The stack consists of a polarizer, nonmagnetic spacer, soft free layer, and pinned magnetic layer. It is found that the domain-wall oscillation frequency is a nonmonotonic, highly asymmetrical function of applied electric current, showing a strong dependence on the current direction and the relative strengths of the interfacial and bulk spin-transfer torques. Micromagnetic analysis reveals that the surprising and atypical oscillator response is due to an interplay between the interfacial spin-transfer torque, the bulk spin-transfer torque, the exchange torque, and the damping torque. The underlying physical and material responses are examined, including the important role of the domain-wall twist. The competitions between the involved torques under different operating conditions suggest that the oscillator could serve as a model system to investigate magnetic and spintronic phenomena at the nanoscale. Finally, the observed current-dependent twisting of the free-layer magnetization about the axis of precession may further be found interesting for investigations of the interaction between spin-polarized current and chiral spin structures.

Logarithmic criticality in transverse thermoelectric conductivity of the ferromagnetic topological semimetal CoMnSb

Here we report the results of our experimental studies on the magnetic, transport, and thermoelectric properties of the ferromagnetic metal CoMnSb. A sizable anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{yx}$ and transverse thermoelectric conductivity $α_{yx}$ are found experimentally and comparable in size to the values estimated from first-principles calculation. Our experiment further reveals that CoMnSb exhibits -T log T critical behavior in $α_{yx}$ (T), deviating from Fermi liquid behavior $α_{yx}$ ~ T over a decade of temperature between 10 and 400 K, similar to ferromagnetic Weyl and nodal-line semimetals. Our theoretical calculation for CoMnSb also predicts the - T log T behavior when the Fermi energy locates near the Weyl nodes in momentum space.

Geometric origin of the intrinsic transverse spin transport in a canted-antiferromagnet/heavy-metal heterostructure

We theoretically study the conditions under which an intrinsic spin Nernst effect–a transverse spin current induced by an applied temperature gradient–can occur in a canted-antiferromagnet insulator, such as LaFeO 3 and other materials of the same family. The spin Nernst effect may provide a microscopic mechanism for an experimentally observed anomalous thermovoltage in LaFeO 3 /Pt heterostructures, where spin is transferred across the insulator/metal interface when a temperature gradient is applied to LaFeO 3 parallel to the interface. We find that LaFeO 3 exhibits an intrinsic spin Nernst effect when inversion symmetry is broken on the axes parallel to both the applied temperature gradient and the direction of spin transport, which can result in a spin injection across the insulator/metal interface. Furthermore, our paper provides a general derivation of a symmetry-breaking-induced spin Nernst effect, which may open a path to engineering a finite spin Nernst effect in systems where it would otherwise not arise.

Spatiotemporal quenches for efficient critical ground state preparation in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model

Quantum simulators have the potential to shed light on the study of quantum many-body systems and materials, offering unique insights into various quantum phenomena. Although adiabatic evolution has been conventionally employed for state preparation, it faces challenges when the system evolves too quickly or the coherence time is limited. In such cases, shortcuts to adiabaticity, such as spatiotemporal quenches, provide a promising alternative. This paper numerically investigates the application of spatiotemporal quenches in the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model with ferromagnetic interactions, focusing on the emergence of the ground state and its correlation properties at criticality when the gap vanishes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these quenches in rapidly preparing ground states in critical systems. Our simulations reveal the existence of an optimal quench front velocity at the emergent speed of light, leading to minimal excitation energy density and correlation lengths of the order of finite system sizes we can simulate. These findings emphasize the potential of spatiotemporal quenches for efficient ground state preparation in quantum systems, with implications for the exploration of strongly correlated phases and programmable quantum computing.

Correlation between mean transverse momentum and anisotropic flow in heavy-ion collisions

The correlation between the mean transverse momentum of outgoing particles, $\langle{p_t}\rangle$, and the magnitude of anisotropic flow, v n , has recently been measured in Pb+Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, as a function of the collision centrality. Here, we confirm the previous observation that event-by-event hydrodynamics predicts a correlation between v n and $\langle{p_t}\rangle$ that is similar to that measured in data. We show that the magnitude of this correlation can be directly predicted from the initial condition of the hydrodynamic calculation, for n = 2, 3, if one replaces v n by the corresponding initial-state anisotropy, ε n , and $\langle{p_t}\rangle$ by the total energy per unit rapidity of the fluid at the beginning of the hydrodynamic expansion.

Skewness of mean transverse momentum fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions

We propose the skewness of mean transverse momentum, $\langle{p_t}\rangle$, fluctuations as a fine probe of hydrodynamic behavior in relativistic nuclear collisions. We describe how the skewness of the $\langle{p_t}\rangle$ distribution can be analyzed experimentally, and we use hydrodynamic simulations to predict its value. We predict in particular that $\langle{p_t}\rangle$ fluctuations have positive skew, which is significantly larger than if particles were emitted independently. We elucidate the origin of this result by deriving generic formulas relating the fluctuations of $\langle{p_t}\rangle$ to the fluctuations of the early-time thermodynamic quantities. We postulate that the large positive skewness of $\langle{p_t}\rangle$ fluctuations is a generic prediction of hydrodynamic models.

Exploring origins for correlations between flow harmonics and transverse momentum in small collision systems

High statistics data sets from experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with small and large collision species have enabled a wealth of new flow measurements, including the event-by-event correlation between observables. One exciting such observable $ρ(v^2_n, [p_T])$ gauges the correlation between the mean transverse momentum of particles in an event and the various flow coefficients (v n ) in the same event [P. Bozek, Phys. Rev. C 93, 044908 (2016)]. Recently it has been proposed that very low multiplicity events may be sensitive to initial-state glasma correlations [G. Giacalone, B. Schenke, and C. Shen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 192301 (2020)] rather than flow-related dynamics. We find utilizing the ip-jazma framework that the color domain explanation for the glasma results are incomplete. We then explore predictions from pythia8, and the version for including nuclear collisions called pythia-angantyr, which have only nonflow correlations, and from the ampt model which has both nonflow and flow-type correlations. We find that pythia-angantyr has nonflow contributions to $ρ(v^2_n, [p_T])$ in p + O, p + Pb, and O + O collisions that are positive at low multiplicity and comparable to the glasma correlations. It is striking that in pythia8 in p + p collisions there is actually a sign change from positive to negative $ρ(v^2_n, [p_T])$ as a function of multiplicity. The ampt results match the experimental data general trends in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC, except at low multiplicity where ampt has the opposite sign. In p + Pb collisions, ampt has the opposite sign from experimental data and we explore this within the context of parton geometry. Predictions for p + O, O + O, and Xe + Xe are also presented.

Model investigation of the longitudinal broadening of the transverse momentum two-particle correlator

Here, the multiphase transport model is used to investigate the longitudinal broadening of the transverse momentum two-particle correlator C 2 (Δη,Δφ), and its utility to extract the specific shear viscosity, η/s, of the quark-gluon plasma formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The results from these model studies indicate that the longitudinal broadening of C 2 (Δη,Δφ) is sensitive to the value of η/s. However, reliable extraction of the longitudinal broadening of the correlator requires the suppression of possible self-correlations associated with the definition of the collision centrality.

Probing nuclear quadrupole deformation from correlation of elliptic flow and transverse momentum in heavy ion collisions

In heavy ion collisions, elliptic flow v2 and radial flow, characterized by eventwise average transverse momentum [p T ], are related to the shape and size of the overlap region, which are sensitive to the shape of colliding atomic nuclei. The Pearson correlation coefficient between v 2 and [p T ], ρ 2 , was found to be particularly sensitive to the quadrupole deformation parameter β that is traditionally measured in low energy experiments. Built on earlier insight that the prolate deformation β>0 reduces the ρ 2 in ultracentral collisions (UCC), we show that the prolate deformation β<0 enhances the value of ρ 2 . As β>0 and β<0 are the two extremes of triaxiality, the strength and sign of v 2 2 -[pT] correlation can be used to provide valuable information on the triaxiality of the nucleus. Our study provide further arguments for using the hydrodynamic flow as a precision tool to directly image the deformation of the atomic nuclei at extremely short timescale (<10 -24 s).

Model study of the energy dependence of the correlation between anisotropic flow and the mean transverse momentum in Au + Au collisions

A hybrid model that employs the hadron-string transport model UrQMD and the (3+1)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamic code vHLLE, is used to investigate the beam energy dependence of the correlation coefficient ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) between the average transverse momentum [p T ] of hadrons emitted in an event and the square of the anisotropic flow coefficient v$^{2}_{2}$. For Au+Au collisions, the model predicts characteristic patterns for the energy and event-shape dependence of the variances for [p T ] and v$^{2}_{n}$ [Var([p T ] and Var(v$^{2}_{2}$)], and the covariance of v$^{2}_{n}$ and [p T ][cov(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ])], consistent with the attenuation effects of the specific shear viscosity η/s. Here in contrast, ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) is predicted to be insensitive to the beam energy but sensitive to the initial-state geometry of the collisions. These observations suggest that a precise set of measurements for Var([p T ]), Var(v$^{2}_{2}$), cov(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) and ρ(v$^{2}_{2}$,[p T ]) as a function of beam energy and event shape, could serve to constrain better the eccentricities and their fluctuations over the entire span of beam energies, and consequently aid precision extraction of the temperature and baryon chemical-potential dependence of η/s from the wealth of Au+Au data obtained in the RHIC beam energy scan.

Centrality and transverse-momentum dependence of higher-order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Here we present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 , respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons π, p, K, φ, K s , Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy √ s NN = 200 GeV. We observe similar v n trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0–10%, 10–40%, and 40–80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

Correlations between flow and transverse momentum in Xe + Xe and Pb + Pb collisions at the LHC with the ATLAS detector: A probe of the heavy-ion initial state and nuclear deformation

The correlations between flow harmonics v n for n = 2, 3, and 4 and mean transverse momentum [p T ] in 129 Xe + 129 Xe and 208 Pb + 208 Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.44 and 5.02 TeV, respectively, are measured using charged particles with the ATLAS detector. The correlations are potentially sensitive to the shape and size of the initial geometry, nuclear deformation, and initial momentum anisotropy. The effects from nonflow and centrality fluctuations are minimized, respectively, via a subevent cumulant method and an event-activity selection based on particle production at very forward rapidity. The v n -[p T ] correlations show strong dependencies on centrality, harmonic number n, p T , and pseudorapidity range. Current models qualitatively describe the overall centralityand system-dependent trends but fail to quantitatively reproduce all features of the data. In central collisions, where models generally show good agreement, the v 2 -[p T ] correlations are sensitive to the triaxiality of the quadruple deformation. Comparison of the model with the Pb + Pb and Xe + Xe data confirms that the 129 Xe nucleus is a highly deformed triaxial ellipsoid that has neither a prolate nor oblate shape. This provides strong evidence for a triaxial deformation of the 129 Xe nucleus from high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Probing nuclear structure with mean transverse momentum in relativistic isobar collisions

Transverse momentum (p⊥) generation in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is sensitive to the initial geometry and the final-state bulk evolution. We demonstrate with hydrodynamic calculations that the mean p⊥ ratio (R $\langle p⊥ \rangle$ ) between the highly similar isobar $^{96}_{44}$RU + $^{96}_{44}$RU and $^{96}_{44}$Zr + $^{96}_{44}$Zr collisions is insensitive to the bulk evolution and remains sensitive to the small difference in the initial nuclear structure (neutron skin and deformation) between the Ru and Zr nuclei. Here, we further find that nuclear deformation can produce an anticorrelation between R $\langle p⊥ \rangle$ and eccentricity (or elliptic flow) in central collisions. These findings suggest that the R $\langle p⊥ \rangle$ between the isobar systems can be used to measure the neutron skin thickness and deformation parameters, which can, in turn, constrain the nuclear symmetry energy slope parameter.
