CharIN Megawatt Charging System: 4 th Event Summary Report

Medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles require higher charging power levels than are supported by present light-duty EV charging standards. The Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) Megawatt Charging System (MCS) Task Force is undertaking efforts to develop a new high-power charging standard for medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification. The fourth MCS evaluation event at NREL focused on thermal and mechanical performance evaluations of high-power MCS electric vehicle charging connectors and inlets from several different manufacturers, at current levels up to 3000A. Additionally, the event evaluated the performance of a reference inlet design, which will provide a baseline level of thermal performance for use in future evaluation and certification efforts of MCS connectors.

29 th International Training Course on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials and Nuclear Facilities (Project Summary)

Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) has hosted the International Training Course on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials and Nuclear Facilities since 1978. This course is the flagship training course of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). On behalf of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Sandia manages, develops, and coordinates all course materials, and works closely with the IAEA to arrange all logistical details for the course ITC-29 incorporated some updates to the facility models, based on feedback received in ITC-28 and the ITC-29 dry run. In addition, all the graphics were refreshed after ITC-28 and implemented in the posters, data handbooks, etc. As in ITC-28, the ITC-29 staff worked closely with the IAEA on course materials, including a peer review process to ensure all course materials were aligned with Nuclear Security Series No. 13 and other relevant international guidance documentation from the IAEA. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ITC-29 was postponed twice and eventually took place in the late summer/early fall of 2022. Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and safety requirements, the number of participants was reduced by about 31 percent from 59 participants in ITC-28 to 41 in ITC-29. As a result, the number of subgroups also decreased from eight in ITC-28 to six for ITC-29. This enabled the Sandia team to implement more opportunities for social distancing, particularly in the large classrooms. Despite the challenges, ITC-29 still passed a significant milestone, with the one-thousandth participant of the international training course attending during this event. Finally, the ITC staff continued the use of its improved method of evaluation to capture participants’ satisfaction with the updated course and to gather feedback concerning future improvements. This document provides a brief description of ITC-29, including a summary of lessons learned and key recommendations for future development efforts.

Proactive Regulatory Approaches to Electrification and Load Growth: Pre-read Document to Support the July 10-11 th Workshop

This document summarizes objectives and context related to a DOE-funded workshop on proactive regulatory approaches to electrification and load growth. It briefly summarizes some of the regulatory barriers to pursuing a proactive approach and some of the risks associated with such an approach. It then summarizes a selection of recent utility proposals and public utility commission actions related to proactive approaches.

Contributions of David Mauzerall to photosynthesis research - celebrating his 95 th birthday

We honor here Professor David Mauzerall, a pioneer in the fields of photochemistry and photobiology of porphyrins and chlorophylls in vitro and in vivo, on the occasion of his 95th birthday. Throughout his career at The Rockefeller University, he refined our understanding of how chlorophyll converts light energy into chemical energy. He exploited top-of-the-line laser technology in developing photoacoustics and a variety of other innovative experimental approaches. His experimental work and conceptual insights contributed greatly to our understanding of photosynthesis and the possible role of photosynthesis in the origin of life. His contributions include many landmark single-authored and collaborative papers, and his legacy includes the training of others who have become authorities themselves. After providing a brief description of his research accomplishments, we include tributes from several of his coworkers and his daughters highlighting their valuable experiences with David Mauzerall on this milestone birthday.

Experimental Investigation of the Mechanical Behavior of a Filled Elastomer at Pressures Below 10 to the -6th Power Torr

The mechanical behavior of a filled elastomer was studied with emphasis on understanding the vacuum-material interactions occurring, and to develop analytical techniques for predicting the vacuum behavior. The test results indicate that two separate mechanisms are involved in the observed property changes: the first controls the time response to applied stress; the second determines the initial internal state of the materials as the result of stresses. It is concluded that the mechanical property changes are attributable to changes in the relaxation processes occurring in the material. These changes are brought about by outgassing of water. Recommendations for future investigations are included.

Some efficient methods for obtaining infinite series solutions of n-th order linear ordinary differential equations

The use of the theta-operator method and generalized hypergeometric functions in obtaining solutions to nth-order linear ordinary differential equations is explained. For completeness, the analysis of the differential equation to determine whether the point of expansion is an ordinary point or a regular singular point is included. The superiority of the two methods shown over the standard method is demonstrated by using all three of the methods to work out several examples. Also included is a compendium of formulae and properties of the theta operator and generalized hypergeometric functions which is complete enough to make the report self-contained.

U-Th-Pb analyses of soil from the Sea of Fertility.

Analyses have been made of lead, uranium, and thorium in two soil samples from the Luna 16 mission. Lead was found to be distinctly radiogenic, but significantly less radiogenic than other lunar soils. The Th/U ratio was found to be 3.8, and the uranium concentration was the lowest so far found for lunar soils.

Development of dispersion strengthened nickel-chromium alloy (Ni-Cr-Th-O2) sheet for space shuttle vehicles, part 1

A dispersion-strengthened alloy, TD nickel chromium (TDNiCr) is being developed for use on the thermal protection system of the space shuttle at temperatures up to 1204 C(2200 F). Manufacturing processes were developed for the fabrication of sheet and foil to specifications. The addition of aluminum to the basic TDNiCr composition provides outstanding oxidation resistance up to 1260 C(2300 F); aluminum levels of 2 to 4% are considered optimum for space shuttle application.

A geometrical interpretation of the 2n-th central difference

Many algorithms used for data smoothing, data classification and error detection require the calculation of the distance from a point to the polynomial interpolating its 2n neighbors (n on each side). This computation, if performed naively, would require the solution of a system of equations and could create numerical problems. This note shows that if the data is equally spaced, then this calculation can be performed using a simple recursion formula.
