Transient X-ray sources in the galactic plane

Uhuru observations of the galactic plane indicate the presence of four X-ray sources not previously characterized as transient: MX 0836-42, A1918+14, 4U 1730-22, and 4U 1807-10. X-ray light curves as well as positional and spectral information are presented for these sources and for 4U 1908+00, a recurrent transient source. The frequency, duration, and intensity of galactic-plane transients during the Uhuru lifetime are discussed. Transient X-ray sources appear to be divided into two classes based primarily on an observed bimodal spectral temperature distribution.

Orbital elements of 4U 0115+63 and the nature of the hard X-ray transients

Extended SAS 3 timing observations of the hard transient X-ray source 4U 0115+63 are reported, and a definitive measurement of the binary orbit of this transient source is presented. It is shown that this source is in a long orbit (period of approximately 24.3 days) that is moderately eccentric (e about 0.34) and that the mean value of the rate of decrease of the pulse period is consistent with the expected spinup of a rotating neutron star that is accreting from a disk. A distance of about 2.5 kpc is inferred, and the B-star optical counterpart is estimated to have an absolute magnitude of approximately -1.5 and a mass of at least 5 solar masses. It is suggested that the companion is a Be star which does not fill its Roche lobe and that the eccentricity and transient nature of the source result from the large orbital separation. It is proposed that hard X-ray transients as a class are collapsed stars (perhaps all neutron stars) in binary systems that are substantially wider than the more persistent X-ray binaries and that the large orbital separation, the small radius of the companion, or both, result in episodic rather than continuous mass transfer onto the X-ray star.

Forerunners - Outer rims of solar coronal transients

The large loop or blob-like transient events viewed in the white-light corona are rimmed by broad regions where the density is slightly enhanced above the pretransient corona. Every one of the Skylab events studied for which sufficiently good Skylab coronagraph coverage is available shows this effect. The upper boundaries of these 'forerunners' blend gradually into the background corona 1-2 solar radii above the transient's leading edges. In any single event, the coronal mass enhancement represented by the forerunner comprises up to 25% of the total excess mass present in the coronagraph's field of view and includes a much larger volume of the corona than previously attributed to the underlying transient. A forerunner without an accompanying transient has not yet been seen. Clearly, forerunners must be reckoned with in any proposed models of discrete outward coronal mass motions, because they indicate the presence of disturbed corona far ahead of the denser portions of the event.

Static and transient performance of YF-102 engine with up to 14 percent core airbleed for the quiet short-haul research aircraft

An outdoor static test stand was used to measure the steady-state and transient performance of the YF-102 turbofan engine with core airbleed. The test configuration included a bellmouth inlet and a confluent-flow exhaust system similar in size to the quiet short-haul research aircraft (QSRA) exhaust system. For the steady-state tests, the engine operated satisfactorily with core bleed up to 14 percent of the core inlet flow. For the transient tests the engine accelerated and decelerated satisfactorily with no core bleed and with core bleed up to 11 percent of the core inlet flow (maximum tested). For some of the tests the core-bleed flow rate was scheduled to vary with fan discharge pressure, to simulate the QSRA bleed requirements. No stability, surge, stall, overtemperature, combustor flameout, or other operating problems were encountered in any of the tests. Steady-state and transient engine performance data are presented in graphs, and fuel-control trajectories for typical transient tests are shown.

Radio and white-light observations of coronal transients

Optical, radio and X-ray evidence of violent mass motions in the corona has existed for some years but only recently have the form, nature, frequency and implication of the transients become obvious. In this paper the observed properties of coronal transients are reviewed, with concentration on the white-light and radio manifestations. The classification according to speeds seems to be meaningful, with the slow transients having thermal emissions at radio wavelengths and the fast ones nonthermal. The possible mechanisms involved in the radio bursts are then discussed and estimates of various forms of energy are reviewed. It appears that the magnetic energy transported from the sun by the transient exceeds that of any other form, and that magnetic forces dominate in the dynamics of the motions. The conversion of magnetic energy into mechanical energy, by expansion of the field, provides a possible driving force for the coronal and interplanetary shock waves.

The very soft X-ray transient H1853 + 60

The detection of a new soft X-ray transient, H1853 + 60, using data from the Low Energy Detectors (LEDs) on the HEAO 1 A-2 experiment, is reported. Although the solar flare hypothesis cannot be ruled out, the similarity between this X-ray transient's temporal and spectral characteristics and those of several other transients observed by HEAO 1 LEDs, suggest a common emission mechanism for these events. It is unlikely that more transients as strong as these will be discovered, except on an individual scan basis.

Optical studies of shock generated transient supersonic base flows

A shock tube employing interferometric and schlieren techniques is used to study transient base flow phenomena following shock wave passage over two plane bluff bodies: a hemicircular cylinder and a cylinder with the Galileo Jovian probe profile. An attempt is made to understand the physics of transition from transient to steady state flow, and to provide code verification for a study employing the Illiac IV computer. Transient base flow interactions include a series of shock diffraction, regular, and Mach reflections, coupled with boundary layer development, separation, and recompression. Vorticity generation and transport underlie these features. The quantitative verification of the computer code includes comparisons of transient pressure and density fields, near wake geometries, and bow shock standoff distances.

A white-light /Fe X/H-alpha coronal transient observation to 10 solar radii

Multitelescope observations of the coronal transient of April 15-16, 1980 provide simultaneous data from the Solar Maximum Mission Coronagraph/Polarimeter, the Solwind Coronagraph, and the new Emission line Coronagraph of the Sacramento Peak Observatory. An eruptive prominence-associated white light transient is for the first time seen as an unusual wave or brightening in Fe X 6374 A (but not in Fe XIV 5303 A). Several interpretations of this fleeting enhancement are offered. The prominence shows a slowly increasing acceleration which peaks at the time of the Fe event. The white light loop transient surrounding the prominence expands at a well-documented constant speed to solar radii, with an extrapolated start time at zero height coincident with the surface activity. This loop transient exemplifies those seen above 1.7 solar radii, in that leading the disturbance is a bright N(e)-enhanced) loop rather than a dark one. This is consistent with a report of the behavior of another eruptive event observed by Fisher and Poland (1981) which began as a density depletion in the lower corona, with a bright loop forming at greater altitudes. The top of the bright loop ultimately fades in the outer corona while slow radial growth continues in the legs.

A coronal transient associated with a high-speed type II burst

Several characteristics of a white light transient observed by the ATM Coronagraph experiment aboard Skylab are discussed. The transient was associated with a very high speed type II radio burst. The observed plane of the sky speed of the burst was 4900 km/s, 6-7 times higher than the speed of the transient itself. Based on the relative speeds of the transient and the radio burst, it is argued that the type II disturbance must have propagated in a still undisturbed corona, at an approximately 35-deg angle to the preexisting streamer and along an essentially open field configuration. The electron density gradients derived from the radio and the white light observations are compared, and it is shown that they are in agreement within the limits of the observations. The assumption that the type II was a weak MHD shock leads to large values for the coronal magnetic field. The possibility that the type II radition originated in a strong shock, with a magnetic Mach number greater than 2, is considered.

Modeling of transient disturbances in coronal-streamer configurations

Numerical simulations of the formation and propagation of mass ejection, loop transients in coronal streamers are discussed. The simulations are accomplished with numerical solutions of the single fluid, ideal MHD equations of motion in the meridional plane. The streamer is produced by simulating the relaxation of an initially radial hydrodynamic flow coupled with a dipole magnetic field. The simulated transient then results from an energy release at the base of the streamer. The legs of the loop transient produced remain essentially stationary while the loop expands mainly in the radial direction with velocities of 400 to 750 km s-1. Once the leading edge of the transient has passed out of the lower corona, the initial streamer configuration is restored after 15 to 24 hours. A second energy release 2 hours later than, and with an energy release identical to, the first does not produce a significant coronal disturbance.

Small gravitationally elicited voltage transients in pea stems

Decapitated veritcal stem segments were observed for 45 min, noting the number of transients mu V for each 5-min interval. Results for two sets of stem segments are plotted. The average frequencies were 0.72 + or -0.05 and 0.66 + or - 0.04 per 5 min. One set of segments was swiveled gently to the horizontal position; then, recording continued for another 90 min. Transients continued in the vertical controls at a closely similar average rate 0.78 + or - 0.04 per 5 min. However, after the first 5-min interval the horizontally placed plants exhibited transients at an increased average rate of 1.08 + or - 0.04 per 5 min. The frequency of transients also increased following horizontal placement of intact shoots. However, it appears that this increase had two components: one due to gravity reception, and one due to the redistribution of indolacetic acid (IAA) believed to mediate gravitropic curvature (or, more specifically, to the increase of IAA in the lower tissue.

High energy transients

A meeting was convened on the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz during the two-week interval July 11 through July 22, 1983. Roughly 100 participants were chosen so as to give broad representation to all aspects of high energy transients. Ten morning review sessions were held in which invited speakers discussed the current status of observations and theory of the above subjects. Afternoon workshops were also held, usually more than one per day, to informally review various technical aspects of transients, confront shortcomings in theoretical models, and to propose productive courses for future research. Special attention was also given to the instrumentation used to study high energy transient and the characteristics and goals of a dedicated space mission to study transients in the next decade were determined. A listing of articles written by various members of the workshop is included.

Transient nucleation in condensed systems

Using classical nucleation theory we consider transient nucleation occurring in a one-component, condensed system under isothermal conditions. We obtain an exact closed-form expression for the time dependent cluster populations. In addition, a more versatile approach is developed: a numerical simulation technique which models directly the reactions by which clusters are produced. This simulation demonstrates the evolution of cluster populations and nucleation rate in the transient regime. Results from the simulation are verified by comparison with exact analytical solutions for the steady state. Experimental methods for measuring transient nucleation are assessed, and it is demonstrated that the observed behavior depends on the method used. The effect of preexisting cluster distributions is studied. Previous analytical and numerical treatments of transient nucleation are compared to the solutions obtained from the simulation. The simple expressions of Kashchiev are shown to give good descriptions of the nucleation behavior.

Radio and visible-light observations of a coronal arcade transient

Simultaneous visible-light and radio observations of a coronal transient that occurred on April 9, 1980 are discussed. Visible-light observations of the transient and the associated erupting prominence were available from the Coronagraph/Polarimeter carried aboard SMM, the P78-1 coronagraph, and from the Haleakala Observatory. Radio observations of the related type III-II-IV bursts were available from the Clark Lake and Culgoora Observatories. The transient was extremely complex; it is suggested that an entire coronal arcade rather than just a single loop participated in the event. Type III burst sources observed at the beginning of the event were located along a nearby streamer, which was not disrupted, but was displaced by the outmoving loops. The type II burst showed large tangential motion, but, unlike such sources usually do, it had no related herringbone structure. A moving type IV burst source can be associated with the most dense feature of the white-light transient.

Transient vibration test criteria for spacecraft hardware

Transient vibration test criteria, developed for spacecraft hardware, provide a test rationale to verify the capability of the hardware to withstand the low and mid frequency transient vibration environments induced by launch vehicle events. A test method, consisting of a series of discrete frequency, limited cycle, modulated sine wave pulses, was developed to avoid the slow swept sine drawbacks, yet provide a repeatable test that would excite all frequencies. The shape of the waveform is that of the classic response of the mass of a one degree of freedom system when it is base-excited by an exponentially decayed sine wave transient. Criteria were developed to define pulse amplitudes, shapes, and center frequencies from spacecraft loads analyses. Test tolerance criteria were also developed and specified. The transient vibration test criteria were implemented on spacecraft flight hardware and provided a more realistic test simulation (i.e., less conservative) for qualification of spacecraft hardware without risk of undertest.

A theory of post-stall transients in multistage axial compression systems

A theory is presented for post stall transients in multistage axial compressors. The theory leads to a set of coupled first-order ordinary differential equations capable of describing the growth and possible decay of a rotating-stall cell during a compressor mass-flow transient. These changing flow features are shown to have a significant effect on the instantaneous compressor pumping characteristic during unsteady operation, and henace on the overall system behavior. It is also found from the theory that the ultimate mode of system response, stable rotating stall or surge, depends not only on the B parameter but also on other parameters, such as the compressor length-to-diameter ratio. Small values of this latter quantity tend to favor the occurrence of surge, as do large values of B. A limited parametric study is carried out to show the impact of the different system features on transient behavior. Based on analytical and numerical results, several specific topics are suggested for future research on post-stall transients.

HEAO 1 high-energy X-ray observations of three bright transient X-ray sources H1705-250 (Nova Ophiuchi), H1743-322, and H1833-077 (Scutum X-1)

The bright X-ray transients H1705-250 (Nova Ophiuchi) and H1743-322 in the energy range 12-180 keV were observed, and the presence of high-energy spectral components was revealed. On the basis of X-ray spectra in the 1-10 keV range, transients are classified as 'soft' (kT = 4 keV) or 'hard' (kT = 17 keV); and both H1705-250 and H1743-322 should be in the 'soft' category. Data have been reexamined for the archetypal 'soft' transient A0600-00 taken by the SAS 3 satellite, but no evidence is found there for a high-energy spectral component. Thus consideration of a wider X-ray energy range makes the 'hard'/'soft' distinction between X-ray transients much less clear.

Circuit transients due to negative bias arcs-II

Two new models of negative-bias arcing on a solar cell power system in Low Earth Orbit are presented. One is an extended, analytical model and the other is a non-linear, numerical model. The models are based on an earlier analytical model in which the interactions between solar cell interconnects and the space plasma as well as the parameters of the power circuit are approximated linearly. Transient voltages due to arcs struck at the negative thermal of the solar panel are calculated in the time domain. The new models treat, respectively, further linear effects within the solar panel load circuit and non-linear effects associated with the plasma interactions. Results of computer calculations with the models show common-mode voltage transients of the electrically floating solar panel struck by an arc comparable to the early model but load transients that differ substantially from the early model. In particular, load transients of the non-linear model can be more than twice as great as those of the early model and more than twenty times as great as the extended, linear model.
