AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency (Report for Task 10: Controllability and Observability Analysis (Deliverable D7))

It is common to have less than full observability for distribution systems, as the number of available measurements are not sufficient. Considering increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), it is imperative to understand and control distribution systems better. Developed for the transmission system, the original numerical observability analysis methods were based on the canonical DC Power Flow (DC-PF) model. However, the DC-PF model is ill-suited for the distribution system in which line resistance to reactance (R/X) ratios can be near unity. In this report, we apply the non-iterative Observability Test (OT) and Observable Island Identification Procedure (OIIP) in to the gain matrix from the distribution system state estimator. Because sensors are few in distribution systems, pseudo-measurements based on historical load profiles and zero-injection virtual measurements are often employed to ensure observability. However, both the observability and the accuracy of the state estimates are uncertain when historical data is limited/unavailable.

AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency (Report for Task 11 & 12: Components and Capabilities of the Resiliency Driven Outage Management and Feeder Restoration System (Deliverable D8))

This report provides progress update for the development of a outage management, feeder restoration, and restoration action feasibility check modules as part of the AGGREGATE project. Details for integration with controllability module, data driven situational awareness of network and distributed energy resources as well cyber security plan for these modules integrated with GE ADMS are also presented in the report. These three modules for outage management, feeder restoration, and restoration action feasibility check modules are developed in MATLAB and validated with a modified IEEE 123-node feeder. Results demonstrate ability of these new modules to improve the restoration process post-disaster to enhance the system resilience.

AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency (Report for Task 13: Functional Specification Report(Deliverable D9))

This report provides functional specification for the AGGREGATE project and associated modules/ tools being developed for outage management and restoration with the Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). This report also provide initial validation of the developed modules and performance metrics. The AGGREGATE team at this stage has been collaborating with General Electric (GE) and Seattle City Light (SCL) to move forward from offline validation to online validation using commercial advanced distribution management system (ADMS). Hence, the functional specifications documents, which outline the requirement of various modules, is provided to address the integration of the modules, including 1) real-time model update and aggregation tools module, 2) observability and controllability metric module, 3) fault location solution service restoration module, 4) transmission-distribution co-simulation module, and 5) advanced distribution management system module. integration of different AGGREGATE modules and functional specification provides the foundation for online multi-scenario testing using SCL system model.

AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency (Report for Task 14: Model Verification/Validation Test Plan (Deliverable D10))

This report summarizes the technical progress and validation plan for each of AGGREGATE project modules, and integrated modules. The overall validation plan can be divided into two major parts. Firstly, it provides offline validation results of each module using the IEEE-123 node distribution system with certain modifications to support individual module results verification. The offline validation plan tentatively validated the usability and practicability of developed AGGREGATE tools. Secondly, the realworld test system - Seattle City Light (SCL) test feeder for verifying each module and the integrated modules using GE advanced distribution management system (ADMS) software.

Report for Task 15: Developed Tool Verification/Validation Report (Deliverable D11): AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency

This report summarizes the verification report for the developed modules. The team conducted verification in two phases. In phase 1, the modules were validated using offline validation methods and in phase 2 the modules were subjected to real-time validation. This report outlines the approach and the results for the modules under offline and real-time settings. The rest of the report details the functional workflow of AGGREGATE modules, we then transition to offline validation followed by real-time validation of modules. We conclude the report by discussing some of the key points of this report.

SECARB-USA: Needs Assessment Framework for Storage Complexes (Task 2.1.b)

A team of SECARB storage experts examined 63 formations at 39 sites that were selected to represent the range of diversity of newly assessed, as well as well-advanced, storage prospects in the SECARB region. We inventoried the data needs triggered by the requirements to obtain a Class VI UIC storage permit, the data needs that results from the requirement to create geocellular fluid flow models to support that permit, and by pragmatic and best practice inputs such as public acceptance, regulatory readiness, and pore space leasing. We anchored both the needs inventory and the processes for and cost of meeting the needs with data from 9 sites in in the SECARB area that have advanced far in characterization. Results show that the total cost of characterization prior to obtaining a permit is convergent, because the permit and modeling requirements drive projects to obtain the same types of data for all cases. The high cost data that control cost are 1) drilling, coring, core-testing, logging, sampling and testing a characterization well and 2) collection of a 3-D seismic survey to map reservoir and confining system properties over the area of the plume or the area of elevated pressure. In 5 of our case study sites we determined that one or both of these costs could be avoided because the needs are met by available data.

Task Force Report: ESR Linear Lattice Design

A new layout and optics for the Electron Storage Ring (ESR) have been produced with revised spin rotators in IRs 6 and 8, a redesign of IR10, and a new geometric layout for the ring. In this report, the efforts to produce this lattice are documented, including the motivation for design decisions. This new lattice, version 5.5, will be used as the baseline for future studies.
