Local Resistance Measurement for Degradation of c-Si Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin Layer (HIT) Solar Modules

Silicon heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (or HIT) modules typically degrade at a rate of less than 1% annually in solar fields with dominant degradation in open-circuit voltage and some degradation in series resistance. However, detailed mechanisms can differ from module to module. Here, we study increases in local series resistance that occur over long-term field deployment, indicated by cell areas where the photoluminescence intensity does not degrade but the electroluminescence degrades significantly. To directly measure the local series resistance, we have cored out the local electroluminescence-degraded area, and we measured the sheet resistance by 4-point-probe and local nm-scale resistance using scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM). The results by 4-point-probe show scattered sheet resistance that can be caused, for example, by nonuniform current paths through the transparent conductive oxide layer, the a-Si:H emitter, or the near-junction c-Si inversion layer. In contrast, the SSRM results indicate a relatively uniform and non-degraded resistivity on smaller nanometer spatial scales. SSRM is an atomic force microscopy-based two-terminal resistance mapping technique that measures the local resistance in nm-volume beneath the probe. The consistent resistances measured on the control and degraded samples can exclude the degradation of transparent conductive oxide resistance.

Impulsive solar X-ray bursts: Bremsstrahlung radiation from a beam of electrons in the solar chromosphere and the total energy of solar flares

Analysis of various aspects of impulsive X-ray bursts (IXB's) has lead to the consideration of a model where the X-rays are produced by bremsstrahlung radiation from a beam of electrons directed toward the photosphere. It was found that in general the X-ray spectrum from such a beam will fall off more rapidly than when the effect of the beaming of radiation is neglected. Furthermore, the spectral index of the resulting X-rays appears to increase by about unity for X-ray energies 100 kev, a fact which may explain the observed cutoff in the spectrum of the IXB's. It is also shown that in such a model there is sufficient energy in the form of nonthermal electrons to explain the total energy (approximately 10 to the 32nd power ergs) of a flare.

Stable Unassisted Solar Water Splitting on Semiconductor Photocathodes Protected by Multifunctional GaN Nanostructures

Producing hydrogen by unassisted solar water splitting is one essential step to make direct solar fuel conversion a viable energy source. To date, however, there has been no demonstration of stable photoelectrodes for high efficiency photoelectrochemical water splitting. In this work, we report that a GaInP2/GaAs/Ge triple-junction (3J) photocathode protected by multi-functional GaN nanostructures can enable both efficient and relatively stable solar water splitting. A 12.6% solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency is measured without any external bias. Of particular importance, we demonstrate relatively stable solar water splitting for 80 hours in three-electrode configuration and 57 hours in two-electrode measurement at zero bias. This is the best reported stability for multi-junction semiconductor photocathodes in two-electrode configuration to our knowledge. Here, the multifunctional GaN nanostructure significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance at semiconductor/electrolyte interface and protects III-V materials against corrosion. Such multi-functional GaN photocatalytic nanostructures provide a new pathway to improve the performance of conventional photoelectrodes to achieve both efficient and stable unassisted solar water splitting.
