Hydrogen recombination at high optical depth and the spectrum of SN 1987A

A general theory is presented for hydrogen recombination line formation in an expanding medium in which some of the lines are optically thick. This theory is used to calculate the time evolution of the hydrogen lines of SN 1987A at t equal to or greater than 150 days, assuming that the supernova envelope is a homologously expanding uniform sphere. The theoretical luminosities and ratios of the recombination lines agree remarkably well with the observations. For the first 2 yr, the supernova envelope is optically thick to Balmer continuum. For t equal to or less than 400 days, hydrogen is ionized primarily from the n = 2 level by Balmer continuum photons, which are provided partly by the two-photon decay of the 2s state and partly by emission lines of heavy elements.

Compton telescope observations of gamma rays from SN 1987A

Results are reported of observations of a significant excess of gamma rays at energies of 1.0-2.5 MeV from the direction of SN 1987A, 418 days after detonation. Two features at 1.21 and 1.88 MeV are attributed to the 1.238 MeV and the combined 1.771, 2.015, and 2.035 MeV line emissions from the decay of Co-56 in the expanding ejecta with respective fluxes of (4.6 +/-1.4 +/-1.2) x 10 exp -4 and (3.5 +/-0.9 +/-0.9) x 10 exp -4 gamma/sq cm s, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The obtained energy resolution of 11 percent did not permit a definite separation of the 1.771-MeV line from the two other lines at 2.015 and 2.035 MeV that form the group at 1.88 MeV. The line fluxes were obtained after correcting for the north-south effect and the continuum.

Directional solidification of Pb-Sn eutectic with vibration

Pb-Sn eutectic alloy was directionally solidified at 1.4 to 3.2 cm/h with forced convection induced by axial vibration of the growth ampoule with a frequency of 10 to 40 Hz and an amplitude of 0.5 to 1.0 mm. To determine the exact growth rate, an interface demarcation technique was applied. The lamellar spacing was increased 10 to 40 percent in ingots solidified with vibration, compared to those solidified without vibration. The number of grain boundaries was increased by vibration. The average intensity of convection in the melt under axial vibration of the ampoule was estimated by comparing the experimental results with a theoretical model.

Constraints to the decays of Dirac neutrinos from SN 1987A

The decay mode of a keV-mass Dirac neutrino is addressed with reference to the nineteen neutrino events associated with SN 1987A that were detected by the Kamiokande II and Irvine-Brookhaven-Michigan detectors. A complementary constraint is presented which is based upon a distinctive signal associated with the decay of wrong-helicity neutrinos that was not seen: high-energy (50 MeV and higher) neutrino events. The absence of such events excludes the decay of wrong-helicity neutrinos into proper-helicity neutrinos for a Dirac neutrino of mass between 1 and 300 keV. The constraint also rules out models of the 17-keV neutrino.

Massive Dirac neutrinos and SN 1987A

The wrong-helicity states of a Dirac neutrino can provide an important cooling mechanism for young neutron stars. Based on numerical models of the early cooling of the neutron star associated with SN 1987A which self-consistently incorporate wrong-helicity neutrino emission, it is argued that a Dirac neutrino of mass greater than 30 keV (25 keV if it is degenerate) leads to shortening of the neutrino burst that is inconsistent with the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven and Kamiokande II data. If pions are as abundant as nucleons in the cores of neutron stars, the present limit improves to 15 keV.

Space Shuttle Orbiter Fleet Leader Orbital Maneuvering Engine SN 002A injector replacement

During testing of the Fleet Leader Orbital Maneuvering Engine (OME) Serial Number (SN) 002A at the White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) in 1983 the injector was inadvertently damaged. After testing was completed in 1985, there was a concern that the performance of the engine and its response to specific test conditions might not be sufficiently representative of flight engines to provide valid test results. To correct this damage, the engine was returned to the manufacturer to replace the injector. The task assigned was to evaluate the damage and generate a unique process to repair the Fleet Leader OME while providing minimum impact to the overall life condition of the engine. In addition to successfully performing the repair operation, the as received condition of the engine and its components were documented for Fleet Leader reference. The engine is currently at WSTF where it has accumulated 11,341 seconds of firing time to date, 2615 seconds of which have occurred since the engine repair.

SN 1987A - The impact of greater than 50 MeV gamma-ray luminosity limits on theories of particle acceleration

Analysis of the data obtained from two flights of a balloonborne gamma-ray detector to observe SN 1987A was completed. The detector, which included a spark chamber to determine the arrival directions of the photons, was sensitive in the energy range 50-500 MeV. The 95 percent confidence upper limit to the flux on day 55 after the explosion has been established to be 1.1 x 10 exp -5 photons/sq cm/s and on day 407 to be 3.4 x 10 exp -5 photons/sq cm/s. These limits are compared with various theoretical predictions.

Postcollapse hydrodynamics of SN 1987A - Two-dimensional simulations of the early evolution

The first few seconds of the explosion of SN 1987A are modeled here using a 2D cylindrical geometry smooth particle hydrodynamics code. The success of the explosion is determined to be sensitive to the duration of the infall, the timing of the bounce, and the subsequent neutrino heating. A semianalytical model for the initial structure of the collapsed object is used to present two simulations that differ by the mass that has been allowed to collapse into a neutron star prior to the bounce. In the case of a short initial infall, the explosion fails due to excessive cooling. For a longer initial infall, the cooling is less and the explosion is successful although relatively weak. It is shown that in this case, a successful explosion is brought about by the presence of an entropy gradient which, combined with the gravitational pull of the neutron star, leads to extremely strong instabilities. The critical importance of the global circulation for the success of the explosion is demonstrated.

The narrow emission lines from SN 1987 A

Observations of the narrow lines from SN 1987 A have been reviewed, along with model interpretations of these observations. In addition, a discussion is provided on characteristics of the radiation from the supernova outburst, and how this affects the thermal structure of the circumstellar gas. Preliminary results from 2D hydrodynamical calculations for the circumstellar structure are also presented.

X-ray emission from SN 1986J in NGC 891

Using the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter on ROSAT, we detected soft X-ray emission from SN 1986J in NGC 891 approximately nine years after the supernova event. The X-ray emission is characterized by L(x) (0.1-2.5 keV) = 1.6-7 x 10 exp 40 ergs/s, T(x) = 1.0-3.9 keV, and an absorbing column of 5-14 x 10 exp 21/sq cm. The X-ray luminosity, temperature, and absorption column are reproduced surprisingly well in a model where a reverse shock propagates into the outer layers of the exploded star. The large absorbing column is probably intrinsic to the supernova and represents the cooled gas created by a radiative reverse shock.

Observations of the light echoes from SN 1987A using the Astro-1 Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope

We present the results from images taken from the region of the light echoes around SN 1987A, as acquired on the first flight of the Astro-1 Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT). They indicate a weighted-average UV echo surface brightness of about 3 x 10 exp -18 ergs/s sq cm A sq arcsec. This is consistent with earlier results obtained by the IUE when scaled by the optical surface brightness of the two different echoes observed. These results indicate that the UV flux emitted by shock from core collapse penetrating the stellar surface cannot be as strong as that predicted by a large class of theoretical models (cited herein), or that previous results on the optical scattering of echoing dust do not apply to these clouds. Prospects for a more accurate measurements once the echoes have propagated to other regions and a background measurements can be obtained with UIT are discussed. They indicate that a more accurate determination of the above results is probable with another epoch of UIT observations.

The Co-57 abundance in SN 1987A

Astrophysical implications of the detection by OSSE of Co-57 gamma radiation from SN 1987A are discussed. By burying the alpha-rich-freezeout portion at deeper gamma depths than in published models, it is shown that it remains barely possible that the bolometric luminosity during days 1200-1800 could derive from Co-57 power without requiring 57/56 production ratios greater than twice solar. Alternative mechanisms which may contribute to the bolometric power at late times are proposed.

High-cycle fatigue characterization of titanium 5Al-2.5Sn alloy

High-cycle fatigue behavior of titanium 5Al 2.5Sn alloy at room temperature has been studied. S-N curve characterization is performed at different stress ratios ranging from 0 to 0.9 on a subsized fatigue specimen. Both two-stress and three-stress level tests are conducted at different stress ratios to study the cumulative fatigue damage. Life prediction techniques of linear damage rule, double linear damage rule and damage curve approaches are applied, and results are compared with the experimental data. The agreement between prediction and experiment is found to be excellent.

Macrosegregation During Steady-State Arrayed Growth of Dendrites in Directionally Solidified Pb-Sn Alloys

The paper examines the growth parameter dependence of the longitudinal macrosegregation due to interdendritic thermosolutal convection during directional solidification of Pb-Sn alloys with a steady-state dendritic arrayed morphology. The experimentally observed longitudinal macrosegregation can be described by an empirical parameter, effective partition coefficient (kE), obtained from Cs = kEC0(1 - fs) super KI-1, where the original tin content is C0 and that corresponding to the fraction distance solidified (Fs) is Cs. Channel formation is strongly associated with the onset of thermosolutal convection in the interdendritic melt. The critical effective Rayleigh number for the onset of channel formation is about 0.07.

High-resolution mid-infrared spectra of Co II, Ni I, and Fe II in SN 1987A

Ground-based infrared observations of SN 1987A on day 612 after the explosion have yielded resolved line profiles of Co II, Ni I, Fe II at 10.52, 11.31, and 17.94 micron, respectively. The spectra were taken at a resolving power of about 1000 with an array grating spectrometer on the 4 m telescope of Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Based on the observed line intensities we have estimated the minimum mass of each ion: M(Co II) = (6.0 +/- 1.8) x 10 exp -5 solar mass; M(Ni I) = (1.1 +/- 0.1) x 10 exp -3 solar mass; and M(Fe II) = (8.0 +/- 1.5) x 10 exp -3 solar mass. From these we infer total masses for cobalt, nickel, and iron in the ejecta. The nickel and iron line profiles are markedly asymmetric. We interpret these as arising from two components, one centered on the stellar rest velocity with an approximately 3250 km/s full width, and the second at about +1200 km/s with an approximately 1100 km/s full width. The asymmetry may represent a large-scale fracturing of the ejecta by Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities.

Gamma-ray continuum and line observations of SN 1987A

The Caltech gamma-ray imaging telescope observed the hard X-ray and gamma-ray emission from SN 1987A as it evolved between 1987 May and 1989 April, in a series of four balloon flights from Alice Springs, NT, Australia. Observations of the Crab Nebula and Pulsar provided in-flight data on pointing accuracy and instrument function for each flight. Results presented here include our measurements on November 18, 1987 (D268) and April 12, 1988 (D414) of both line emission at 847 and 1238 keV from the decay of Co-56, and Compton-scattered continuum above 50 keV. Upper limits for both line and continuum emission were obtained on May 20, 1987 (D86) and April 4, 1989 (D771). For the D268 and D414 continuum measurements, our results are best-fit by a differential power law of the form dN/dE = kE exp -gamma (sq cm s keV) for the energy range 50-800 keV. Our corresponding line measurements were fit with Gaussian profiles, containing additional terms for the underlying continuum. We compare our flux measurements and upper limits to those from other experiments and to predictions of theoretical models.

Evaluating Space Network (SN) scheduling operations concepts through statistical analysis

The Network Control Center (NCC) currently uses the NCC Data System (NCCDS) to schedule customer spacecraft communication requests for the Space Network (SN). The NCC/Request Oriented Scheduling Engine (NCC/ROSE), which implements an operational concept called flexible scheduling, is being tested as a potential replacement for the NCCDS scheduler in an effort to increase the efficiency of the NCC scheduling operations. This paper describes the high fidelity benchmark tests being conducted on NCC/ROSE, the evaluation techniques used to compare schedules, and the results of the tests. This testing will verify the increases in efficiency and productivity that can help the NCC meet the anticipated scheduling loads well into the next century.

SN 1993J: A Type IIb supernova

The evolution of the bright Type II supernova discovered last year in M81, SN 1993J, is consistent with that expected for the explosion of a star which on the main sequence had a mass of 13-16 Solar Mass but which, owing to mass exchange with a binary companion (a intially approximately 3-5 AU, depending upon the actual presupernova radius and the masses of the two stars) lost almost all of its hydrogen-rich envelope during late helium burning. At the time of explosion, the helium core mass was 4.0 +/- 0.5 Solar Mass and the hydrogen envelope, 0.20 +/- 0.05 Solar Mass. The envelope was helium and nitrogen-rich (carbon-deficient) and the radius of the star, 4 +/- 1 x 10(exp 13) cm. The luminosity of the presupernova star was 3 + 1 x 10(exp 38) ergs/s, with the companion star contributing an additional approximately 10(exp 38) ergs/s. The star may have been a pulsating variable at the time of the explosion. For an explosion energy near 10(exp 51) ergs (KE at infinity) and an assumed distance of 3.3 Mpc, a mass of Ni-56 in the range 0.07 +/- 0.01 Solar Mass was produced and ejected. This presciption gives a light curve which compares favorably with the bolomatric observations. Color photometry is more restrictive and requires a model in which the hydrogen-envelope mass is low and the mixing of hydrogen inward has been small, but in which appreciable Ni-56 has been mixed outward into the helium and heavy-element core. It is possible to obtain good agreement with B and V light curves during the first 50 days, but later photometry, especially in bands other than B and V, will require a non-local thermo-dynamic equilibrium (LTE) spectral calculation for comparison. Based upon our model, we predict a flux of approximately 10(exp -5)(3.3 Mpc/D)(exp 2) photons/sq cm/s in the 847 keV line of CO-56 at peak during 1993 August. It may be easier to detect the Computonized continuum which peaks at a few times 10(exp -4) photons /s/sq cm/MeV at 40 keV a few months after the explosion (though neither of these signals were, or should have been, detected by the Compton Gamma-Ray observatory (CGRO). The presupernova star was filing its Roche lobe at the time of the explosion and thus its envelope was highly deformed (about 3:2). The companion star is presently embedded in the supernova, but should becopme visable at age 3 yr (perhaps earlier in the ultraviolet) when the supernova has faded below 10(exp 38) ergs/s. Indeed, if 'kicks' have not played an important role, it is still bound to the neutron star.
