The shape of SN 1993J re-analysed

SN 1993J is one of the best-studied Type IIb supernovae. Spectropolarimetric data analyses were published over two decades ago at a time when the field of supernova spectropolarimetry was in its infancy. Here, we present a new analysis of the spectropolarimetric data of SN 1993J and an improved estimate of its interstellar polarization (ISP) as well as a critical review of ISP removal techniques employed in the field. The polarization of SN 1993J is found to show significant alignment on the q - u plane, suggesting the presence of a dominant axis and therefore of continuum polarization. We also see strong line polarization features, including H β, He i λ5876, H α, He i λ6678, He i λ7065, and high velocity (HV) components of He i λ5876 and H α. SN 1993J is therefore the second example of a stripped-envelope supernova, alongside iPTF13bvn, with prominent HV helium polarization features, and the first to show a likely HV H α contribution. Overall, we determine that the observed features can be interpreted as the superposition of anisotropically distributed line forming regions over ellipsoidal ejecta. We cannot exclude the possibility of an off-axis energy source within the ejecta. These data demonstrate the rich structures that are inaccessible if solely considering the flux spectra but can be probed by spectropolarimetric observations. In future studies, the new ISP corrected data can be used in conjunction with 3D radiative transfer models to better map the geometry of the ejecta of SN 1993J.

TAG… You’re It, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803!

Triacylglycerol (TAG), a ubiquitous energy storage molecule found mainly in eukaryotes, comprises glycerol esterified with three fatty acids of variable lengths and saturation states. TAG is also considered as a high-value biochemical because it can be converted into fatty acid methyl esters, key components of biodiesel, through transesterification with methanol. Thus, considerable efforts have been made to produce TAGs from CO2 as a renewable energy source.

Dipolar and quadrupolar correlations in the 5⁢𝑑 2 Re-based double perovskites Ba 2 ⁢ YReO 6 and Ba 2 ⁢ ScReO 6

Double perovskites containing heavy transition-metal ions are an important family of compounds for the study of the interplay between electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling. Here, by combining magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering measurements, we investigate the dipolar and quadrupolar correlations in two prototypal rhenium-based double perovskite compounds Ba 2 ⁢YReO 6 and Ba 2 ⁢ ScReO 6 . A type-I dipolar antiferromagnetic ground state with a propagation vector 𝐪 = (0,0,1) is observed in both compounds. At temperatures above the magnetic transitions, a quadrupolar ordered phase is identified. Weak spin excitations, which are gapped at low temperatures and softened in the correlated paramagnetic phase, are explained using a minimal model that considers both the dipolar and quadrupolar interactions. In conclusion, at larger wave vectors, we observe dominant phonon excitations that are well described by density functional calculations.

Custom Accessors: Enabling Scalable Data Ingestion, (Re-)Organization, and Analysis on Distributed Systems

The emerging class of high velocity and high volume data analytic workflows comprise interwoven data ingestion, organization, and processing stages, with ingestion and organization steps often contributing comparable or even higher computational costs than actual processing steps. Since complex workflows consist of a variety of phases that view and use data differently, being able to construct efficient, scalable, distributed data structures (arrays, vectors, sets, maps, and multi-maps) is essential and requires custom methods to extend and shrink containers, analyze and position data, and, maintain globallyconsistent meta-data. In this paper, we propose a novel datastructure access paradigm based on the concept of Accessors. At a high level, accessors are customizable callable objects that can modify the behavior of insert, read, update, and delete operations for distributed containers while preserving atomicity guarantees. Accessors provide a very clean and natural way to implement a variety of programming patterns, e.g., conditional insertion/deletion and cascading computations, which would be otherwise hard (or even impossible) to express in parallel and distributed settings without using locks. We demonstrate the practicality and usefulness of our approach with two representative use cases and study the performance of these applications on a distributed High-Performance Computing system. Our analysis highlights that our proposed abstraction allows for an effective overlapping and concurrent execution of different workflow steps (e.g., data ingestion and analysis), which in a conventional analytics pipeline would execute sequentially, contributing cumulatively to the overall latency.

RE-INTEGRATE EMT Simulation Software: Graph Convolutional Network for Sparse Matrix Pattern Detection

The increasing complexity of power networks, driven by proliferation of inverters, presents analytical challenges that simplified models often fail to capture, necessitating Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulations. EMT models are represented as discretized differential-algebraic equations (DAEs), forming a linear system Ax = b that is computationally intensive to solve. Due to inherent sparsity of adjacency matrix A, distinct patterns emerge that, when accurately identified, enable efficient solver selection to minimize computation time. However, identifying ideal pattern is complicated by numerous reordering algorithms and limited structural insights. To address this, we introduce a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) model for classifying sparse matrix patterns common in power system analysis. The model, achieving 96% test accuracy, is validated using PV plant models of 125 MW capacities connected to New England 39-bus transmission system (TS), and further scaled to a 4,992-bus network with 384 PV plants, yielding 191, 616 × 191, 616 sized A matrix. For all cases, the GCN model accurately identifies the matrix’s intrinsic sparse pattern, demonstrating its potential to enhance solver performance in EMT analysis.

LCOE*: Re-Thinking LCOE for Photovoltaic Systems

Solar industry is working towards reducing the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The LCOE formulation includes various implicitly connected cost and physical design parameters. This entails complex cost analyses by economists, and electrical analysis and energy yield calculations of solar farms by device physicists/technologists. The standard formulation requires a constant exchange of information to optimize the design of a specific farm. In this paper, we present a fundamental reformulation of LCOE (in terms of LCOE*) to deconvolve the cost vs. energy yield analysis so that economists and technologists can work independently towards minimizing LCOE. We validate our LCOE* formulation by comparing LCOE calculated by the traditional vs. new method. We further provide a global analysis of LCOE* as an illustrative example. This LCOE* will accelerate new technology development (e.g. bifacial PV) by allowing a rapid and transparent analysis of its cost-performance trade-off.

Time-Efficient Qudit Gates through Incremental Pulse Re-seeding

Current efforts to build quantum computers focus mainly on the two-state qubit, which often involves suppressing readily-available higher states. In this work, we break this abstraction and synthesize short-duration control pulses for gates on generalized d-state qudits. We present Incremental Pulse Reseeding, a practical scheme to guide optimal control software to the lowest-duration pulse by iteratively seeding the optimizer with previous results. We find a near-linear relationship between Hilbert space dimension and gate duration through explicit pulse optimization for one- and two-qudit gates on transmons. Furthermore, our results suggest that qudit operations are much more efficient than previously expected in the practical regime of interest and have the potential to significantly increase the computational power of current hardware.

Re-Evaluating Virtual Reality Manipulation Techniques for Precise Alignment of Complex 3D Objects

Prior research has developed a number of manipulation techniques that can achieve precise object placement in virtual reality, but studies of these techniques typically use simple objects. We conducted a study comparing two existing techniques, (AMP-IT and WISDOM), during alignment of objects with complex geometry to evaluate the potential influence of geometric complexity on performance, usability, workload and preference. Our findings indicate that participants had faster completion times and higher trial completion rates with AMP-IT on high-precision alignment tasks, contrary to earlier findings that used simple objects. Yet WISDOM is still preferred and considered more usable, despite increased workload and poorer performance, exposing participants' willingness to trade objective performance for comfort during use.

A re-examination of the mechanism of whiting events: A new role for diatoms in Fayetteville Green Lake (New York, USA)

Whiting events—the episodic precipitation of fine-grained suspended calcium carbonates in the water column—have been documented across a variety of marine and lacustrine environments. Whitings likely are a major source of carbonate muds, a constituent of limestones, and important archives for geochemical proxies of Earth history. While several biological and physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the onset of these precipitation events, no consensus has been reached thus far. Fayetteville Green Lake (New York, USA) is a meromictic lake that experiences annual whitings. Materials suspended in the water column collected through the whiting season were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. Whitings in Fayetteville Green Lake are initiated in the spring within the top few meters of the water column, by precipitation of fine amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) phases nucleating on microbial cells, as well as on abundant extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) frequently associated with centric diatoms. Whiting particles found in the summer consist of 5–7 μm calcite grains forming aggregates with diatoms and EPS. Simple calculations demonstrate that calcite particles continuously grow over several days, then sink quickly through the water column. In the late summer, partial calcium carbonate dissolution is observed deeper in the water column. Settling whiting particles, however, reach the bottom of the lake, where they form a major constituent of the sediment, along with diatom frustules. The role of diatoms and associated EPS acting as nucleation surfaces for calcium carbonates is described for the first time here as a potential mechanism participating in whitings at Fayetteville Green Lake. This mechanism may have been largely overlooked in other whiting events in modern and ancient environments.

Genomics of turions from the Greater Duckweed reveal its pathways for dormancy and re‐emergence strategy

Summary Over 15 families of aquatic plants are known to use a strategy of developmental switching upon environmental stress to produce dormant propagules called turions. However, few molecular details for turion biology have been elucidated due to the difficulties in isolating high‐quality nucleic acids from this tissue. We successfully developed a new protocol to isolate high‐quality transcripts and carried out RNA‐seq analysis of mature turions from the Greater Duckweed Spirodela polyrhiza . Comparison of turion transcriptomes to that of fronds, the actively growing leaf‐like tissue, were carried out. Bioinformatic analysis of high confidence, differentially expressed transcripts between frond and mature turion tissues revealed major pathways related to stress tolerance, starch and lipid metabolism, and dormancy that are mobilized to reprogram frond meristems for turion differentiation. We identified the key genes that are likely to drive starch and lipid accumulation during turion formation, as well as those in pathways for starch and lipid utilization upon turion germination. Comparison of genome‐wide cytosine methylation levels also revealed evidence for epigenetic changes in the formation of turion tissues. Similarities between turions and seeds provide evidence that key regulators for seed maturation and germination were retooled for their function in turion biology.

Re‐evaluating the energy balance of the many routes of carbon flow through and from photorespiration

Photorespiration is an essential process related to photosynthesis that is initiated following the oxygenation reaction catalyzed by rubisco, the initial enzyme of the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle. This reaction produces an inhibitory intermediate that is recycled back into the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle by photorespiration which requires the use of energy and the release of a portion of the carbon as CO 2 . The energy use and CO 2 release of canonical photorespiration form a foundation for biochemical models used to describe and predict leaf carbon exchange and energy use (ATP and NAPDH). The ATP and NADPH demand of canonical photorespiration is thought to be different than that of the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle, requiring increased flexibility in the ratio of ATP and NADPH from the light reactions. Photorespiration requires many reactions across the chloroplasts, mitochondria and peroxisomes and involves many intermediates. Growing evidence indicates that these intermediates do not all stay in photorespiration as typically assumed and instead feed into other aspects of metabolism and leave as glycine, serine, and methylene‐THF. Here we discuss how alternative flux through and from canonical photorespiration alters the ATP and NADPH requirements of metabolism following rubisco oxygenation using additional derivations of biochemical models of leaf photosynthesis and energetics. Using these new derivations, we determine that the ATP and NADPH demands of photorespiration are highly sensitive to alternative flux in ways that fundamentally changes how photorespiration contributes to the ratio of total ATP and NADPH demand. Specifically, alternative flows of carbon through photorespiration could reduce ATP and NADPH demand ratio to values below what is produced from linear electron transport.

Deletion of Re -citrate synthase allows for analysis of contributions of tricarboxylic acid cycle directionality to the growth of Heliomicrobium modesticaldum

ABSTRACT Heliomicrobium modesticaldum,a phototrophic member of the phylum Firmicutes and family Clostridiales, possesses most of the enzymes specific to the reductive tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycle, except for the key enzyme, ATP-citrate lyase. It is thought to utilize a split TCA cycle when growing on pyruvate as a carbon source, in which the oxidative TCA (oTCA) direction generates most of the 2-ketoglutarate, but some can be produced in the reductive direction. Although a typicalSi-citrate synthase gene is not found in the genome, it was suggested that gene HM1_2993, annotated as homocitrate synthase, actually encodesRe-citrate synthase, which would function as the initial enzyme of the oTCA cycle. We deleted this gene to test this hypothesis and, if true, see what effect severing access to the oTCA cycle would have on this organism. The endogenous CRISPR-Cas system was used to replace the open reading frame with a selectable marker. The deletion mutants could grow on pyruvate but were unable to grow phototrophically on acetate + CO 2 as carbon source. Growth on acetate could be rescued by the addition of different electron sources (formate or ascorbate), suggesting that the oTCA cycle is used to oxidize acetate to generate electrons required to drive the carboxylation of acetyl-CoA. The deletion mutants were capable of growing in acetate minimal media without additional organic supplements beyond formate, demonstrating that the rTCA cycle can be employed to support sufficient 2-ketoglutarate production in this organism, unlike citrate synthase mutants in several chemoheterotrophic organisms utilizing the oTCA cycle. IMPORTANCE Heliobacteria are a unique group of phototrophic bacteria that are obligate anaerobes and possess a rudimentary system to use light as a source of energy. They do not make oxygen or fix carbon dioxide. Here, we explore their fundamental carbon metabolism to understand the role and operation of the central TCA cycle. This work shows both the role and operation of this cycle under different growth modes and explains how these organisms can obtain electrons to drive their biosynthetic metabolism. This foundational knowledge will be crucial in the future when attempts are made to use this organism as a platform for oxygen-sensitive synthesis of compounds in an anaerobe that can use light as its energy source.

Cookie-Jar: An Adaptive Re-configurable Framework for Wireless Network Infrastructures

5G advancements like Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) bring high capacity and low latency, but also intensify interference challenges. Static and dynamic coordination techniques address this, often at the cost of increased power draw. We introduce Cookie-Jar (CJ), an interference coordination (IC) framework using reinforcement learning for multi-goal optimization. By dynamically adjusting network, power, and topology parameters based on real-time conditions, CJ improves Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SINR) while minimizing power consumption. Simulated 5G experiments showcase CJ's potential, achieving a 15% SINR improvement with near-identical power draw compared to existing methods.

What to Support When You’re Compressing

Over the last nearly 20 years, lossy compression has become an essential aspect of HPC applications’ data pipelines, allowing them to overcome limitations in storage capacity and bandwidth and, in some cases, increase computational throughput and capacity. However, with the adoption of lossy compression comes the requirement to assess and control the impact lossy compression has on scientific outcomes. In this work, we take a major step forward in describing the state of practice and by characterizing workloads. We examine applications’ needs and compressors’ capabilities across 9 different supercomputing application domains. We present 24 takeaways that provide best practices for applications, operational impacts for facilities achieving compressed data, and gaps in application needs not addressed by production compressors that point towards opportunities for future compression research.
