An experimental measurement of galactic cosmic radiation dose in conventional aircraft between San Francisco and London compared to theoretical values for conventional and supersonic aircraft

These direct measurements are in fair agreement with computations made using a program which considers both basic cosmic ray atmospheric physics and the focusing effect of the earth's magnetic field. These measurements also agree with those made at supersonic jet aircraft altitudes in Rb-57 aircraft. It is concluded that experiments and theory show that the doses received at conventional jet aircraft altitudes are slightly higher than those encountered in supersonic flights at much higher altitudes.

Dose and linear energy transfer spectral measurements for the supersonic transport program

The purpose of the package, called the high altitude radiation instrumentation system (HARIS), is to measure the radiation hazard to supersonic transport passengers from solar and galactic cosmic rays. The HARIS includes gaseous linear energy transfer spectrometer, a tissue equivalent ionization chamber, and a geiger meuller tube. The HARIS is flown on RB-57F aircraft at 60,000 feet. Data from the HARIS are reduced to give rad and rem dose rates measured by the package during the flights. Results presented include ambient data obtained on background flights, altitude comparison data, and solar flare data.

Research investigation directed toward extending the useful range of the electromagnetic spectrum

The lifetimes and fine structure of He(-) were studied using time-of-flight techniques and quenching by a static axial magnetic field. Using level-crossing spectroscopy the hyperfine constants A and B and the lifetime of the 3 2P3/2 state of Li-7 were measured. Polarization of the Ru 7S level was created as a first step in determining the hyperfine structure of the alkali excited S state. The parametric interaction between light and microwaves in optically pumped Rb-87 vapor were investigated. Measurements and analyses of transitions in formaldehyde and its isotopic species and in the lowest two excited vibrational states of H2CO were also made, as well as of transitions in furan, pyrrole, formic acid, and cyanoacetylene. The Hanle effect was studied in the NO molecule, and RF oscillators were developed with flat, wideband output to observe excited state hyperfine transitions at zero field. Data was generated on the time-dependent behavior of photon echoes in ruby. Stimulated Raman scattering was studied in atomic Tl vapor. A Q switched, temperature-tuned ruby laser was developed which operates between 6934 and 6938 A. The frequency shift due to resonant interaction between identical radiating atoms was calculated.

Remote sensing of environmental disturbance

Color, color infrared, and minus-blue films obtained by RB-57 remote sensing aircraft at an altitude of 60,000 feet over Boca Raton and Southeast Florida Earth Resources Test Site were analyzed for nine different types of photographic images of the geographic patterns of the surface. Results of these analyses are briefly described.

Superconductivity in the alkali metal intercalates of molybdenum disulphide

The complete series of alkali metals, lithium through cesium, have been intercalated into molybdenum disulphide, using both the liquid ammonia and vapor techniques. All the intercalates with the exception of lithium yielded full superconducting transitions with onset temperatures of 6 K for AxMoS2(Ax=K,Rb,Cs) and 4 K for BxMoS2(Bx=Li,Na). The superconducting transition for lithium was incomplete down to 1.5 K. Stoichiometries and unit cell parameters have been determined for the intercalation compounds. Both rhombohedral and hexagonal polymorphs of MoS2 have been intercalated and found to exhibit the same superconductivity behavior. The nature of the extraneous superconducting transition of some intercalated samples on exposure to air was elucidated.

Central Atlantic regional ecological test site: A prototype regional environment information system

The author has identified the following significant results. Prior to the actual testing of data from ERTS-1, the principal scientific results to date are the establishment of a model or design for a regional land use information system based on remote sensor data and a firm establishment of the RB-57 type high altitude aircraft data base as an important tool in land use mapping. Preliminary user evaluations of the resulting land use data have been favorable, and one of the states, Maryland, has adopted the USGS-GAP land use system as a first step towards mapping their entire state. The State is funding an extension (to the west) of the part of Maryland not covered by CARETS (Central Atlantic Regional Ecological Test Site), using the GAP land use classification and mapping procedures.

Geochemical aspects of some Japanese lavas.

K, Rb, Sr, Ba and rare-earth concentrations in some Japanese lavas have been determined by mass-spectrometric stable-isotope dilution. The samples fall into three rare-earth groups corresponding to tholeiitic, high alumina and alkali basalts. Japanese tholeiites have trace element characteristics similar to those of oceanic ridge tholeiites except for distinctly higher relative concentrations of Ba. Japanese lavas may result from various degrees of partial fusion of amphibole eclogite.

Uranium-bearing minerals of lunar rock 12013.

The U distribution in rock 12013 was studied by fission track and elemental mapping techniques. Major U-bearing phases are whitlockite, apatite, zircon, and phase beta, which is a Zr-Ti mineral rich in Fe, Nb, Y, REE, and containing up to 3.6% UO2, 4.7% ThO2 and 4.2% PbO. Calculated microprobe ages for phase beta average 4.0 b.y. and are in reasonable agreement with Rb-Sr and K-Ar ages. Phase beta plays a significant role in the U-Th-Pb systematics of rock 12012 and may play a similar role in the model ages of lunar soil.

Some Pb and Sr isotopic measurements on eclogites from the Roberts Victor Mine, South Africa.

Five nodules of eclogite, one nodule of garnet peridotite, and one sample of kimberlite from the Roberts Victor Mine in the Orange Free State were analyzed for concentrations of U, Th, Pb, Rb, and Sr, and also isotopic compositions of Pb and Sr. Results are presented and analyzed. They indicate that the Roberts Victor eclogites have been contaminated by lead from the host rock of kimberlite. This finding suggests that stepwise extraction of lead may be a means of obtaining the isotopic composition of the primary lead in kimberlitic eclogites.

Meteoritic and non-meteoritic trace elements in Luna 16 samples.

Two Luna 16 soils have been analyzed for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Co, Cs, Cu, Ga, Ge, In, Ur, Ni, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Te, Tl, and Zn. A meteoritic component similar to that in Apollo 11 and 12 soils seems to be present, corresponding to about 1.5 to 2% Cl chondrites or equivalent. It probably consists largely of micrometeorites. Three elements show strong enrichments compared to Apollo 11 and 12 soils: Cd (5 x to 200 x), Ag (5 x to 10 x), and Bi (3 x). Presumably these elements were brought in by Cd-Ag-Bi rich material, similar to that in Unit VI of Apollo core 12028.

Superconductivity in intercalated molybdenum disulfide.

X-ray studies show the existence of two different types of expansions of the intercalated unit cell in both Na and K compounds. Two different phases are also indicated in the superconducting behavior of the K compound. All intercalated samples studied show a superconducting transition. K and Rb compounds become superconductors in the temperature range from 6.5 to 6.0 K. The Na compounds become superconductors at about 4.5 K. In all cases, the superconductivity disappears upon a short exposure of the sample to air. This phenomenon confirms that the superconductivity is due to the presence of the alkali metal.

Chemical fractionations in meteorites. V - Volatile and siderophile elements in achondrites and ocean ridge basalts.

Eighteen achondrites and 4 terrestrial basalts (3 ocean ridge, 1 continental) were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation analysis for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Co, Cs, Cu, Ga, In, Ir, Rb, Se, Tl and Zn. Samples included 7 eucrites, 5 howardites, 2 nakhlites, 2 shergottites, an angrite, and an aubrite. Light and dark portions of the gas-rich meteorites Kapoeta and Pesyanoe were analyzed separately. Nakhlites and shergottites have volatile element abundances similar to those in ocean ridge basalts; eucrites, howardites, and angrites show greater depletions by an order of magnitude and less similar abundance patterns. In terms of a two-component model of planetary accretion, the parent planets contained the following percentages of low-temperature material: eucrites 0.8, nakhlites 38, shergottites 28. Shergottites may be genetically related to L-chondrites. The siderophile element pattern of achondrites resembles that of the moon, but with less extreme depletions.

Some chemical features of basalts from the British Tertiary Province.

An attempt has been made to chemically characterize the basalts from four islands, Rhum, Eigg, Canna, and Muck that, together with Skye, comprise the Inner Hebrides. The basalts are shown to be chemically distinct from tertiary basalts described from the Faroes and Iceland, but have the low concentrations of Rb, Sr found in some mildly alkaline basalts dredged from the Atlantic. Possible evolution of these rocks is discussed.

Age of an Apollo 15 mare basalt - Lunar crust and mantle evolution.

An internal Rb-Sr isochron for the large basalt boulder 15555 returned from the edge of Hadley rille by the Apollo 15 mission yields an age 3.32 (plus or minus 0.06) b.y. and an initial Sr-88/Sr-86, I = 0.69934 plus or minus 5. This age and I value fall well within the range obtained for the Apollo 12 basalts from the Ocean of Storms and may indicate that extensive lava flows occurred at 3.3 b.y. over widespread areas of the moon. The Sr composition of the anorthosite 15415 is as low as that of plagioclase extracted from the Apollo 11 low K rocks. The initial Sr composition of 15415 for an assumed age of 3.3 to 4.6 b.y. is extremely primitive and provides further evidence for an extremely short formation interval of a nonchondritic moon with respect to an origin in time defined by BABI.

Partitioning of Eu and Sr between coexisting plagioclase and K-feldspar.

Minerals were separated by an EM approach and with the aid of liquids of great density. An analysis of K, Rb, Ca, Sr, Ha, and rare earth elements was conducted by means of a mass spectrometer isotope dilution technique. The behavior of the divalent europium ions during the partition process was found to be very similar to that of divalent strontium ions, taking into consideration data of the partition coefficients between coexisting feldspars in acidic rocks.
