Fluorescence-mediated postcollision interaction in x-ray photoionization of the Xe 𝐾 edge

Postcollision interaction (PCI) in near-threshold photoionization of the K shell of atomic Xe is investigated with hard-x-ray synchrotron radiation. Applying Auger electron spectroscopy, line-shape distortion is monitored in the K-L 2 → L 2 M 4,5 M 4,5 decay channel, where the initial K-L 2 (Kα 2 ) x-ray-emission step mediates the emission of the two continuum electrons. The K-edge result is compared to similar data obtained on direct L 2 M 4,5 M 4,5 decay at the L 2 edge without x-ray-emission. In conclusion, it is found that the evolution of the PCI shift with excess photon energy is very similar at both edges, but a subtle decrease in the PCI shift is observable at the K edge due to the effect of the ultrafast x-ray emission step delaying the PCI energy exchange by a few attoseconds.

The Challenges of Using Real-Time Detection Systems: From Data Gathering to Actionable Information [Slides]

This session will discuss challenges and real life examples associated with Real-Time Detection Systems (RTDS) used in exposure assessment strategies. This first presentation will provide an overview of RTDS as used as part of an overall exposure assessment strategy and to document regulatory compliance. Managing OH consequences has been problematic when it comes to actionable information gleaned from sensor data. The judgement of regulatory entities, can be at odds with IH practitioners implementing an exposure strategy that creates exposure profiles and judges workplace exposures.

Target Multiwire for the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beamline

The Booster Neutrino Beamline experiment requested a new secondary electron emission multiwire profile monitor installation. The device had to be durable in high radiation conditions and mounted within a large 10 foot airtight steel fixture for installation near the beam target. Previous iterations of multiwire suffered radiation damage to both the connectors and wires. To ensure accurate horizontal and vertical beam profile measurements, an updated design was proposed, designed, and constructed. The new BNB multiwire utilizes 3 mil diameter gold-plated tungsten sense wires soldered to vertical and horizontal Alumina-96 ceramic planes, 50 wires per plane. Radiation hard Kapton insulated 30 gauge wires carry the output signals. Profiles are readout through charge integrator scanner electronics. This paper will detail the design and functionality of the BNB target multiwire and present relevant beam profile data.

Real-time neutron multiplicity and source localization for criticality safety during fuel debris removal

Advancing neutron detection and analysis techniques for complex radiation environments is an ongoing focus in nuclear instrumentation and monitoring. This proposal presents research and development of a generalized real-time neutron monitoring and analysis system, applicable to any detector capable of producing time-tagged neutron count data. While the work is demonstrated using the Neutron Multiplication Analysis Detector (NoMAD), a modular 15-tube helium-3 (He-3) array, due to its availability, spatial resolution, and flexible deployment, the methods developed are extensible to other systems, including organic scintillators and fast digital detectors. This research investigates two complementary analytical techniques for real-time characterization of neutron emitting sources: neutron multiplicity estimation based on the Hage-Cifarelli formalism and spatial localization using supervised machine learning applied to spatial count rate patterns. These methods are designed to operate under dynamic, evolving conditions such as fuel debris retrieval or reactor startup, where neutron-emitting material geometries may be partially unknown or changing over time. By integrating statistical neutron emission data with spatial localization, this research aims to develop and evaluate methods for real time neutron monitoring, source characterization, and material verification. Key contributions include implementation of a low-latency data pipeline for continuous neutron multiplicity analysis, development and validation of machine learning models for spatial inference, and experimental evaluation of system performance under variable measurement conditions. The outcomes are intended to support applications in nuclear safeguards, verification, emergency response, and reactor startup.

NCERC-CL TREAT Free Field Characterization Foil Reaction Rate Results

This report summarizes the analysis and preliminary MCNP reaction rate modeling of free field characterization measurements performed in the Transient Reaction Test Facility (TREAT) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) between 12/18/2023 and 2/22/2024. A series of seven irradiations were performed using the Big-BUSTER (Broad Use Specimen Transient Experiment Rig) core configuration. Foil sets including 19.5% LEU-Zr alloy wire, S, Au, Fe, Ni, Co, Ti, and Zr were deployed in each irradiation. Identical foil sets were supplied to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and INL. All foils were supplied by INL. Additional details on the experiment can be found in [2]. The foil sets were shipped to the National Criticality Experiments Research Center Counting Laboratory (NCERC-CL) branch at LANL (NCERC-CL NISC) and were received on 3/25/2024. Additional details on receipt and counting are reported in [3]. All reactor dosimetry measurements were performed in adherence to the ASTM standards applicable to reactor dosimetry. Measured reaction rates from Au, Co, Fe, Ni, and Ti are reported. Select reaction rate ratios and simulated reaction rates and ratios are discussed. Reaction rates for all measured reaction products were modeled with MCNP 6.3.1 and a TREAT input deck supplied by Edward Lum. Neutron emission estimates calculated using the measured and simulated reaction rates show excellent agreement between the three fast-threshold n-p reactions with the percent differences being < 9% between the three reactions. The capture reactions had poorer, but still reasonable, agreement with < 20% percent differences between the neutron emission estimates of the three capture reactions. The percent difference between the fast-threshold and capture reactions is ∼ 100% for each reaction. This supports the TREAT model is not accurately modeling the neutron spectrum and additional measurements are required to characterize TREAT and match measurements to simulation.

Hear It? – New Physics Calls For a Healthy Target!

Nowadays, when the attention of the physics community is drawn to muon collider prospects and neutrino projects, a target as the primary source of such exotic particles is a key component of a particle physics experiment. The extreme conditions placed on the target, though, decrease its functionality and threaten the future of high-power targetry. Subject to superb magnetic fields, extreme temperatures, and radiation damage, the target is constantly at risk of unexpected failures. The Target Health Monitor (THM) aims to enable the continuous analysis of the target state throughout the experiment. Based on the optical concept of Brewster s angle and the reflectivity variation with the compositional changes in the target material, the THM will record and evaluate the radiation-caused transmutations in the target to foresee its malfunction before it affects the experimental results. The first steps in validating our THM concept have been made this summer. Continuing reflectivity measurements of the prospective target materials, we anticipate proving the THM potential to monitor target health effectively.

Acoustic Monitoring of Pyroprocessing Equipment

This paper provides an introduction to using acoustic monitoring to advance detection techniques for pyroprocessing in support of nuclear safeguards and non-proliferation. The usage of free air acoustic monitoring has been previously demonstrated at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) facilities such as the Advanced Test Reactor and the National Security Test Range. However, the proposed work revolves around a new deployment environment, the Fuel Conditioning Facility, that brings forward several questions regarding the performance of the technology in non-free air media. The confinement of the pyroprocessing equipment to a heavily shielded hot cell, the atmosphere of the hot cell containing argon gas, and the radiation dose inside the hot cell are all new environments for acoustic monitoring. To our knowledge, acoustic measurements have not been completed in such an environment before. This offers a new opportunity to study not only the acoustic signatures of the equipment inside of the hot cell, but also the propagation of the signals through the hot cell and at distances away from their origination. The objective of this paper is to explain the planned instruments to monitor the Fuel Conditioning Facility in order to evaluate acoustic signals emitted from equipment during various stages of operation. Identifying these signals can potentially enable the identification of specific pieces of equipment used in pyroprocessing and produce information of their operational status. If successful, this type of monitoring could offer a new method to aid in safeguards and proliferation detection of pyroprocessing activities.

Radiation Hardened Beam Instrumentations for Multi-mega-watt Beam Facilities

A beam instrumentation is an essential element for the successful operate particle accelerators in which various diagnostics and beam control systems are integrated into beam optics. However, the performance of beam instrumentation is often subject to constraints such as prompt radiation dose, integrated radiation dose, operation (ambient) temperature and humidity, available space, and strength of embedded electromagnetic fields at the monitoring point. These constraints will limit the dynamic range of operational beam parameters, like the maximum achievable beam power. A seamless R\&D effort to develop the radiation hardened beam instrumentation should be made for future multi-MW beam facilities. In this paper, we describes about a radiation hardened beam instrumentation based on the operational experience of the NuMI beam line.

A global daily soil moisture dataset derived from Chinese FengYun Microwave Radiation Imager (MWRI)(2010–2019)

Surface soil moisture (SSM) is an important variable in drought monitoring, floods predicting, weather forecasting, etc. and plays a critical role in water and heat exchanges between land and atmosphere. SSM products from L-band observations, such as the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Mission, have proven to be optimal global estimations. Although X-band has a lower sensitivity to soil moisture than that of L-band, Chinese FengYun-3 series satellites (FY-3A/B/C/D) have provided sustainable and daily multiple SSM products from X-band since 2008. This research developed a new global SSM product (NNsm-FY) from FY-3B MWRI from 2010 to 2019, transferred high accuracy of SMAP L-band to FY-3B X-band. The NNsm-FY shows good agreement with in-situ observations and SMAP product and has a higher accuracy than that of official FY-3B product. With this new dataset, Chinese FY-3 satellites may play a larger role and provide opportunities of sustainable and longer-term soil moisture data record for hydrological study.

Radiation tolerance studies of the HV-mux GaNFETs for the HL-LHC ATLAS ITk Strip detector

For the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC, the current ATLAS inner detector will be replaced with a new silicon charged-particle tracker, the ITk, which consists of the ITk Pixel and the ITk Strip subdetector. The high voltage multiplexing (HV-Mux) GaNFETs are radiation-tolerant transistors that permit switching off high voltage to malfunctioning sensors on the ITk Strip modules. To ensure the reliability of the GaNFETs in the high radiation environment expected at the HL-LHC, a sample of the production batch was exposed to gamma radiation. Finally, the GaNFETs were characterized pre-irradiation and post-irradiation, and monitored during irradiation.

Low Energy Muon Beam Diagnostics: Scintillating Fiber Profile Monitor

The MeV Test Area (MTA) houses the 400 MeV H- Beam at the end of the Linac and a secondary beamline of muons and pions created from hitting a Tungsten target. The MTA is in the Irradiation Test Area (ITA), where experiments involve studying the effects of radiation on materials in the MTA beam. There is a need for a retractable detector to monitor the secondary beam’s intensity and coarse profile. The SFPM was chosen when considering factors like ability to measure low rates and handle high intensities. The plan was to test different scintillating fibers & Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) models to figure out which combination gives the best signals, and gain familiarity with the detector assembly, operation, and data acquisition software before using with final detectors in beamline. The SiPM circuit has been tested with a LED pulser successfully. The immediate steps that follow will be to set the SiPM up on the monitor with three different types of optical fibers, use the Caen software to configure the best mode of data acquisition, and proceed with an offline source test using Strontium-90. Once the most efficient measurement method is clear, they will be ready for use in the beamline.
