Correct symmetry in density functional theory calculations of δ-Pu [Slides]

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations in the delta-phase of Pu have long relied on the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin structure to approximate the material’s unique electronic structure. The resulting tetragonal distortion away from the correct cubic symmetry was believed to be a necessary consequence of allowing an ordered spin structure.

Survey of Photonuclear Measurements for 239 Pu

We have performed a limited survey of available experimental data for photonuclear cross sections on 239 Pu. In this initial survey, we excluded ratio measurements. We took inventory of a) the available measured observables and corresponding energy range of the measurements; b) the source of the irradiated photons and the methodology used for the measurement; and c) any discrepancies between the original published data and corresponding EXFOR entry. This activity is not an assessment of the quality of the data, only the availability and verifiability of the data in the EXFOR library.

Evaluating Optical Techniques to Characterize Solid State Samples for the Pu-238 Supply Program

This report documents steps that have been taken to establish advanced characterization capabilities for solid-state samples to support the 238 Pu Supply Program. The program has already invested significantly in spectroscopy and online monitoring development for liquid processes. Many of the data, analytical methods, and equipment could also be leveraged for the analysis of Np/Pu oxides and Np pellets to help classify material properties and link them to operations. The techniques described in this work include diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), Raman spectroscopy, and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Each technique is sensitive to various chemical and/or elemental species and can provide complimentary information to more standard methods such as powder x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. These options are remotely deployable via fiber-optic cables. DRS and Raman spectroscopy are already approved for glove box and hot cell work, but LIBS requires US Department of Energy approval for incorporation. Raman spectroscopy does require laser shielding, which means that DRS is the easiest method to implement. However, each technique provides complimentary data, and the most robust sample characterization could be achieved when all three, among other methods, are harnessed together. This report documents some of the progress made testing these capabilities, some of the challenges, and next steps to optimize the technology and integration strategies.

Validating Mixtures of 233 U, 235 U, and 239 Pu for the Sum-of-Fractions Method [Slides]

A joint effort by PNNL and ORNL examined mixtures of 233 U, 235 U, and 239 Pu to determine subcritical mass limits based on similarities to critical benchmark experiments through the Sum-of-Fractions method. Results of the validation efforts by ORNL were used to determine areas of applicability based on EALF and moderator/reflector type. TSUNAMI-1D, TSUNAMI-IP, and VADER sequences used for generating sensitivities, similarity assessments, and statistical testing. Validation efforts provided here using the Sum-of-Fractions method results in k eff values below established calculational margins and provides additional flexibility to limits provided in ANSI/ANS-8.15.

NCSP supports 240 Pu prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) evaluation

A new 240 Pu PFNS evaluation was recently undertaken at LANL as a strategic priority. It truly is an NCSP end-to-end product. It factors in a new differential experiment funded by NCSP, builds on theoretical work coming out of a previous NCSP nuclear data evaluation milestone and was validated with an NCERC experiment that was recently evaluated as an integral benchmark with NCSP funds.

Measurements of the 238 U/ 235 U and 239 Pu/ 235 U Fission Cross-Section Ratios Using Monoenergetic Neutron Beams

A quasi-monoenergetic neutron beam was used to measure the neutron-induced fission cross-section ratios for 238 U(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) (Table 1) and 239 Pu(n,f)/ 235 U(n,f) (Table 2). These results are plotted in comparison with data from the fissionTPC and ENDF/B-VIII.0 in Figs.1-3. For each cross section ratio, the total, systematic, and statistical uncertainties are listed, along with the total beamtime required.

Legacy Metallic Fuel U(Pu)Zr Data Qualification

The Metallic Fuels Irradiation and Physics Database (FIPD) is an organized collection of legacy metallic fuel U(Pu)Zr data, measurements, and reactor conditions from the Experimental Breeder Reactor II (EBR-II) and the Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF). The database provides a wealth of information and is easily accessed and utilized by the U.S. nuclear industry and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The database contains three categories of data. The first category covers fuel pin fabrication specifications, including fuel slug diameter and length, cladding diameter, smeared density, etc. The second consists of operational conditions, which include axial distributions of power, temperature, fluence, burnup, isotopic density, etc. The third category contains post-irradiation examination (PIE) results, largely collected at facilities now part of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), formerly part of Argonne National Laboratory -West (ANL-W) and at the Alpha-Gamma Hot Cell Facility (AGHCF) at Argonne National Laboratory, comprising fission gas release and chemistry analysis, profilometry measurements, neutron radiography data, etc. All these data have been organized and preserved in FIPD.

Classification Analytics of Pu-239 and U-235 Source Signatures Using Gamma Spectral Regions

Machine learning detection methods using gamma signatures from spectral measurements of low-intensity Pu-239 and U-235 sources are studied. NaI detectors located at different distances fromthe source have been used to collect the training and independent testing data sets. The source is introduced via a shielded conduit into the facility where it is surrounded by 21 NaI detectors deployed over 6 x 6 meters area in the formation of two concentric circles and a spiral. The counts in gamma spectral regions associated with these two sources are estimated at 1 second intervals for each NaI detector, and are used as classifier features for detecting the source presence. Eight different classifiers with five basic properties — namely, smooth, non-smooth, statistical, structural, and hyper-parameter tuning — are trained and tested using the background and source measurements collected over multiple experimental runs. While the overall classifier performance improved as detectors closer to the source are used, some identically produced detectors under-performed but differently between two sources. Some classifiers achieved lower training error but their testing error based on independent measurements is higher for both sources. Overall, these results indicate significant over-fitting by these methods, and illustrate the complexity of training and selecting the machine learning methods to solve these detection problems.

Risk Analysis of Radiological Release from Pu-238 Targets During Manual Handling

Pu-238 Isotope Production Targets are routinely installed in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) core, transferred, and stored in the spent fuel canal. These evolutions involve manual handling and manipulation of the targets underwater using long handled tools. The ATR Safety Analysis Report (SAR) postulates a design basis accident which results in damage from manual manipulation of targets, and radiological consequences must be determined for receptors inside the reactor facility, as well as public receptors. This presentation presents the analysis used to determine the radiological consequences due to potential target damage in the ATR canal. The analysis considered radionuclide release fractions, damage ratios for handling evolutions, and entrainment of radionuclides in the canal water.
