Effects of quasiparticle-vibration coupling on Gamow-Teller strength and 𝛽 decay with the Skyrme proton-neutron finite-amplitude method

We adapt the proton-neutron finite-amplitude method, which in its original form is an efficient implementation of the Skyrme quasiparticle random phase approximation, to include the coupling of quasiparticles to like-particle phonons. The approach allows us to add beyond-quasiparticle random-phase approximation correlations to computations of Gamow-Teller strength and 𝛽-decay rates in deformed nuclei for the first time. We test the approach in several deformed isotopes for which measured strength distributions are available. Furthermore, the additional correlations dramatically improve agreement with the data, and will lead to improved global 𝛽-decay rates.

Shot noise and universal Fano factor as a characterization of strongly correlated metals

Shot noise measures out-of-equilibrium current fluctuations and is a powerful tool to probe the nature of current-carrying excitations in quantum systems. Recent shot-noise measurements in the heavy-fermion strange metal YbRh 2 Si 2 exhibit a strong suppression of the Fano factor ( F )—the ratio of the current noise to the average current in the dc limit. This system is representative of metals in which electron correlations are extremely strong. Here we carry out the first theoretical study on the shot noise of diffusive metals in the regime of strong correlations. A Boltzmann-Langevin equation formulation is constructed in a quasiparticle description in the presence of strong correlations. We find that F = 3 / 4 in such a correlation regime. Thus, we establish the aforementioned Fano factor as universal to Fermi liquids, and we show that the Fano factor suppression observed in experiments on YbRh 2 Si 2 necessitates a loss of the quasiparticles. Our work opens the door to systematic theoretical studies of shot noise as a means of characterizing strongly correlated metallic phases and materials. Universal phase dynamics in VO 2 switches revealed by ultrafast operando diffraction

Understanding the pathways and time scales underlying electrically driven insulator-metal transitions is crucial for uncovering the fundamental limits of device operation. Using stroboscopic electron diffraction, we perform synchronized time-resolved measurements of atomic motions and electronic transport in operating vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) switches. We discover an electrically triggered, isostructural state that forms transiently on microsecond time scales, which is shown by phase-field simulations to be stabilized by local heterogeneities and interfacial interactions between the equilibrium phases. This metastable phase is similar to that formed under photoexcitation within picoseconds, suggesting a universal transformation pathway. Our results establish electrical excitation as a route for uncovering nonequilibrium and metastable phases in correlated materials, opening avenues for engineering dynamical behavior in nanoelectronics.

Pattern formation and transport for externally driven active matter on periodic substrates (a)

Abstract We investigate the transport of interacting active run-and-tumble particles moving under an external drift force through a periodic array of obstacles for increasing drive amplitudes. For high activity where the system forms a motility-induced phase-separated state, there are several distinct dynamic phases including a low drive pinned cluster phase, an intermediate uniform fluid, and a higher drive stripe crystal state. The transitions between the phases are correlated with signatures in the transport curves, differential mobility, and power spectra of the velocity fluctuations. In contrast, in the low activity regime the transport curves and power spectra undergo little change as a function of drive. We argue that in the high activity limit, the behavior is similar to that of driven solids on periodic substrates, while in the low activity limit the system behaves like a driven fluid.

Modeling 2p-2h Interactions in Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering: A Comparative Overview of the Valencia and SuSAv2-MEC Models

2p-2h interactions are crucial for describing ν-A scattering, especially in the "dip region" between the Quasi-Elastic (QE) peak and Δ-resonance production. They involve the ejection of two nucleons, leading to two holes in the nuclear ground state. The underlying nuclear dynamics involve short-range correlations (SRC), long-range correlations (Random Phase Approximation, RPA), and the interplay of one- and two-body currents. Several models attempt to describe 2p-2h interactions, including Microscopic Models (e.g., Valencia), Scaling-Based Models (e.g., SuSAv2-MEC), and Transport Models (e.g., GiBUU). Despite progress, discrepancies exist between models and with data. I Will give an overview of 2p2h from the perspective of two Models Valencia and SuSAv2-MEC.

I Will give an overview of 2p2h from the perspective of two Models Valencia and SuSAv2-MEC. I will introduce my current work to apply reweighting from SuSAv2 to Valencia on argon which will help improving the systematic uncertainty on MEC for SBN and DUNE.

Chilldown study of the single stage inducer test rig

Of the six chilldown tests, data from only one could be used for evaluation. During the rest of the chilldown tests, there was leakage hydrogen flow into the pump cavity prior to the initiation of the chilldown test. In all of the tests the hydrogen condition into the pump was probably 100% vapor. The data from this one test, therefore, can be used to compare only the single phase fluid correlation in the analytical pump chilldown model. In general, the actual pump chilled down much faster than predicted by the analytical pump model. There were insufficient data from the test to measure the pump flow rate and pump inlet fluid condition; therefore, these parameters were extrapolated based on related data which were available. However, even with the highest probable flow rate, the pump chilled faster than predicted.

Ecology and thermal inactivation of microbes in and on interplanetary space vehicle components

The mechanism for thermal inactivation of bacterial spores under moist or dry heat was studied. Experimental conditions were established relating to spore loss of heat resistance and loss of optical density as a measure of the rate and extent of germination in spore suspensions. Events occurring during germination were correlated with phase darkening (refractility and non-refractility of spores), stainability characteristics of heat and non-heat treated spores, morphological characteristics, and studies on swelling of spores by an increase in packed cell volume.

Conceptual design for spacelab two-phase flow experiments

KC-135 aircraft tests confirmed the gravity sensitivity of two phase flow correlations. The prime component of the apparatus is a 1.5 cm dia by 90 cm fused quartz tube test section selected for visual observation. The water-cabin air system with water recycle was a clear choice for a flow regime-pressure drop test since it was used satisfactorily on KC-135 tests. Freon-11 with either overboard dump or with liquid-recycle will be used for the heat transfer test. The two experiments use common hardware. The experimental plan covers 120 data points in six hours with mass velocities from 10 to 640 kg/sec-sq m and qualities 0.01 to 0.64. The apparatus with pump, separator, storage tank and controls is mounted in a double spacelab rack. Supporting hardware, procedures, measured variables and program costs are defined.

Delta VLBI spacecraft tracking system demonstration. Part 1: Design and planning

The current status of planned delta very long base interferometry (VLBI) navigation during Voyager Jupiter encounters is discussed. It is indicated that angular accuracies of 0.05 microrads are possible and that near real time data transmission can be achieved with minimal station hardware and software modifications. A software correlator and phase tracking program, operating on the SFOF IBM 360, used for data processing is described.

Colorimetry and magnitudes of asteroids

In the present paper, 1500 UBV observations are analyzed by a new rather general multiple scattering theory which provided clear insight into previously poorly-recognized optical nature of asteroid surfaces. Thus, phase curves are shown to consist of a surface-texture controlled component, due to singly scattered light, and a component due to multiple scattering. Phase curve shapes can be characterized by a single parameter, the multiple scattering factor, Q. As Q increases, the relative importance of the opposition effect diminishes. Asteroid surfaces are particulate and strikingly similar to texture, being moderately porous and moderately rough on a scale greater than the wavelength of light. In concequence, Q (and also the phase coefficient) correlate well with geometric albedo, and there exists a purely photometric means of determining albedos and diameters.

An experimental investigation of silicon wafer surface roughness and its effect on the full strength of plated metals

Plated silicon wafers with surface roughness ranging from 0.4 to 130 microinches were subjected to tensile pull strength tests. Electroless Ni/electroless Cu/electroplated Cu and electroless Ni/electroplated Cu were the two types of plate contacts tested. It was found that smoother surfaces had higher pull strength than rougher, chemically etched surfaces. The presence of the electroless Cu layer was found to be important to adhesion. The mode of fracture of the contact as it left the silicon was studied, and it was found that in almost all cases separation was due to fracture of the bulk silicon phase. The correlation between surface roughness and mode of contact failure is presented and interpreted.

An interferometer-based phase control system

A system for focusing and pointing the SPS power beam is discussed. The system is ground based and closed loop. One receiving antenna is required on Earth. A conventional uplink data channel transmits an 8-bit phase error correlation back to the SPS for sequential calibration of each power module. Beam pointing resolution is better than 140 meters at the Rectenna.

An analysis of radio interferometry with the block O system

The form and flow of information from signal reception to recorded bits at each station, through cross-correlation, phase-tracking, phase calibration, and bandwidth synthesis, to final observable formation are traced. In this process the data volume is greatly compressed for each observation, from approx. 10 to the 9th power bits on the station tapes to only four final observables: amplitude, delay, phase-delay rate and RF phase. After phase calibration and propagation media calibrations, the final delay observable is shown to be the sum of a geometric delay and a clock synchronization offset.

Millimeter-wave studies of the surfaces of Mercury and Mars and the atmosphere of Venus

Disk average brightness temperatures of Mercury were obtained using a 4.6 m radio telescopes. The data was searched for periodicities which correlate with phase angle, hermocentric longitude and beat frequencies produced by modulations of various celestial mechanical parameters. Spectral line observations were made of Venus with the NRAO 11 m radio telescope. The total CO content and the CO vertical profile, and their variability were observed. Large scale thermophysical properties of the surface of Mars were studied.

Observation of chromospheric evaporation during the Solar Maximum Mission

A study is presented of the upward motions of part of the soft X-ray emitting plasma using data for flares collected in 1980 by the Bent Crystal Spectrometer and the Hard X-ray Burst Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Results show that upward motions of the soft X-ray plasma are temporally associated with the build up of the thermal phase of flares and with the period of energy deposition as indicated by the hard X-ray emission. In addition, it is found that the hardness of the hard X-ray spectrum, the evaporation velocity, and the rate of increase of the gradual phase are correlated. It is also possible that the total electron energy deposited in the chromosphere, the peak emission measure of the evaporating plasma, and the peak emission measure of the thermal coronal plasma may also be correlated.
