Hybrid Fuel Cell Systems for Heavy-Duty Trucks: Configuration, Heat Rejection, and Performance

Low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell systems can achieve higher efficiency than diesel engines, but heat rejection remains a major challenge in class-8 heavy-duty fuel cell trucks. For the same rated power, the radiator heat load is greater than that in a diesel engine, while the allowable operating temperatures are lower. This work proposes and evaluates 400 kWe fuel cell–battery hybrid (FCH) platforms and operating strategies that manage heat rejection without enlarging the radiator frontal area. Three FCH platforms are identified, each varying in fuel cell system (FCS) rated power, battery energy storage system (ESS) capacity, and maximum stack coolant exit temperature (T h1 ). All three satisfy key system and vehicle requirements, including 175 kWe FCS power at top sustained speed, 400 kWe FCH power on a 6% grade climb, a target stack power density (PD) of 750 mW e /cm 2 , and heat rejection constraints. The first FCH has the smallest FCS, the largest ESS, and a T h1 of 90 °C. The second achieves the highest PD of 840 mW e /cm 2 at a T h1 of 95 °C. The third has the largest FCS, the smallest ESS, and a T h1 of 102 °C. At a Th1 of 115 °C, the platform can be configured as a stand-alone 400 kWe(net) FCS without hybridization, but the achievable PD drops to 460 mW e /cm 2 .

Model‐Based Approach to Selecting Pegfilgrastim Dose for Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Similarity Studies in Biosimilar Development

This study applied modeling and simulation (M&S) approaches to evaluate the sensitivity of pegfilgrastim pharmacokinetics (PKs) and pharmacodynamics (PDs) to changes in dose amount, and linear or nonlinear clearance (CL) over pegfilgrastim subcutaneous dose of 2–6 mg. A previously published model was adapted to better describe pegfilgrastim PK and PD data in healthy subjects and used in simulation. Nonlinear CL accounts for 98% and 77%, respectively, of the total CL of pegfilgrastim at 2 and 6 mg. The sensitivity analyses showed: (i) PK of 2 and 6 mg doses are similarly sensitive to detect differences for a 5% change in dose; (ii) PK of 2 mg dose is more sensitive to changes in receptor binding affinity, a model parameter for nonlinear CL, and a product quality attribute characterized with orthogonal methods as part of demonstrating analytical similarity between products; (iii) PK of approved 6 mg dose is more sensitive to changes in linear CL, which has not been associated with any specific product quality attributes, and (iv) the PDs are not sensitive to changes in linear or nonlinear CL. Taken together, our analyses support that the approved pegfilgrastim dose of 6 mg is appropriate for detecting differences between a biosimilar and the reference products in pegfilgrastim PK and PD similarity studies. The described M&S approaches can be adopted to support dose selection for biosimilars with nonlinear PK and complex PK–PD interplay.

X-Ray Polarization of the Magnetar 1E 1841−045

We report on IXPE and NuSTAR observations beginning 40 days after the 2024 outburst onset of magnetar 1E 1841−045, marking the first IXPE observation of a magnetar in an enhanced state. Our spectropolarimetric analysis indicates that both a blackbody (BB) plus double power-law (PL) and a double blackbody plus power-law spectral model fit the phase-averaged intensity data well, with a hard PL tail (Γ = 1.19 and 1.35, respectively) dominating above ≈5 keV. For the former model, we find the soft PL (the dominant component at soft energies) exhibits a polarization degree (PD) of ≈30% while the hard PL displays a PD of ≈40%. Similarly, the cool BB of the 2BB+PL model possesses a PD of ≈15% and a hard PL PD of ≈57%. For both models, each component has a polarization angle (PA) compatible with celestial north. Model-independent polarization analysis supports these results, wherein the PD increases from ≈15% to ≈70% in the 2–3 keV and 6–8 keV ranges, respectively, while the PA remains nearly constant. We find marginal evidence for phase-dependent variability of the polarization properties, namely a higher PD at phases coinciding with the hard X-ray pulse peak. We compare the hard X-ray PL to the expectation from resonant inverse Compton scattering (RICS) and secondary pair cascade synchrotron radiation from primary high-energy RICS photons; both present reasonable spectropolarimetric agreement with the data, albeit the latter does so more naturally. We suggest that the soft PL X-ray component may originate from a Comptonized corona in the inner magnetosphere.

Pd‐Ru Alloy Nanocages with a Face‐Centered Cubic Structure and Their Enhanced Activity toward the Oxidation of Ethylene Glycol and Glycerol

Abstract This article reports a facile method for the synthesis of Pd‐Ru nanocages by activating the galvanic replacement reaction between Pd nanocrystals and a Ru(III) precursor with I ‐ ions. The as‐synthesized nanocages feature a hollow interior, ultrathin wall of ≈2.5 nm in thickness, and a cubic shape. Our quantitative study suggests that the reduction rate of the Ru(III) precursor can be substantially accelerated upon the introduction of I ‐ ions and then retarded as the ratio of I ‐ /Ru 3+ is increased. The Pd‐Ru nanocages take an alloy structure, with the Ru atoms in the nanocages crystallized in a face‐centered cubic structure instead of the hexagonal close‐packed phase taken by bulk Ru. Using Pd nanocubes with different edge lengths, the dimensions of the nanocages in the range of 6−18 nm can readily be tuned. When tested as catalysts toward the electro‐oxidation of ethylene glycol and glycerol, respectively, the Pd‐Ru cubic nanocages prepared from 18 nm Pd cubes exhibit 5.1‐ and 6.2‐fold enhancements in terms of mass activity relative to the commercial Pd/C. After 1000 cycles of accelerated durability test, the mass activities of the nanocages are still 3.3 and 3.7 times as high as that of the pristine commercial Pd/C catalyst, respectively.

Unusual water-assisted NO adsorption over Pd/FER calcined at high temperatures: The effect of cation migration

Moisture contained in vehicle exhaust gas normally degrades the capacity and efficiency of Pd ion-exchanged zeolites as NO x adsorbents by competitive adsorption on active sites. Here, we report a counterexample to this general proposition, in which moisture facilitates the storage of NO as a nitrosyl complex on hydrated Pd ions in high temperature calcined FER-type zeolites. The divalent Pd 2+ cations upon elevated temperature (>800 °C) calcination occupy cationic position that render them fully coordinated by oxygen ions of the zeolite framework, and become inactive for the adsorption of probe molecules such as NO or CO. These ‘hidden’ Pd ions, however, are accessible by NO when the zeolite is hydrated, but readily release NO at around 200°C as dehydration proceeds. Herein, by combining systematic in situ infra-red data with X-ray diffraction Rietveld analyses, we revealed that the high temperature-induced relocation of Pd ions to more stable cationic positions located near 6-membered ring of the ferrierite cage is responsible for this anomalous behavior. This discovery constitutes a notable advance in understanding coordination chemistry of cations in zeolites.

Size-Dependent Energy and Adhesion of Pd Nanoparticles on Graphene on Ni(111) by Pd Vapor Adsorption Calorimetry

Carbon-supported late transition-metal nanoparticles are promising catalysts and electrocatalysts for wide-ranging applications. However, experimental investigations of the bonding energetics of metal nanoparticles on carbon supports are very limited. Here, in this work, we report heats of adsorption of Pd vapor deposited onto single-layer graphene(0001) supported on Ni(111) at 100 and 300 K as Pd grows particles of well-defined size in the range from three atom clusters to 6 nm diameter. Sizes were determined from He + low-energy ion scattering (LEIS). In this size range, the differential heat of Pd adsorption increases from 228 kJ/mol to within 10 kJ/mol of the heat of sublimation of bulk Pd (377 kJ/mol). The chemical potential of metal atoms in these nanoparticles as a function of average particle size was determined from these results. The adhesion energy at the Pd/graphene(0001)/Ni(111) interface was extracted from these data and found to be 3.5 J/m 2 for the largest Pd particles. For the three metal elements that have now been studied (Pd, Ni, and Ag), we found an increase in metal/graphene(0001)/Ni(111) adhesion energy with metal carbophilicity, which we defined here as the heat of C atom adsorption on that metal’s (111) surface estimated from published density functional theory calculations.

Comparison of Raindrop Size Distribution Measurements by Collocated Disdrometers

An impact-type Joss-Waldvogel disdrometer (JWD), a two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD), and a laser optical OTT Particle Size and Velocity (PARSIVEL) disdrometer (PD) were used to measure the raindrop size distribution (DSD) over a 6-month period in Huntsville, Alabama. Comparisons indicate event rain totals for all three disdrometers that were in reasonable agreement with a reference rain gauge. In a relative sense, hourly composite DSDs revealed that the JWD was more sensitive to small drops (,1 mm), while the PD appeared to severely underestimate small drops less than 0.76mm in diameter. The JWD and 2DVD measured comparable number concentrations of midsize drops (1-3mm) and large drops (3-5 mm), while the PD tended to measure relatively higher drop concentrations at sizes larger than 2.44mm in diameter. This concentration disparity tended to occur when hourly rain rates and drop counts exceeded 2.5mm/h and 400/min, respectively. Based on interactions with the PD manufacturer, the partially inhomogeneous laser beam is considered the cause of the PD drop count overestimation. PD drop fall speeds followed the expected terminal fall speed relationship quite well, while the 2DVD occasionally measured slower drops for diameters larger than 2.4mm, coinciding with events where wind speeds were greater than 4m/s. The underestimation of small drops by the PD had a pronounced effect on the intercept and shape of parameters of gamma-fitted DSDs, while the overestimation of midsize and larger drops resulted in higher mean values for PD integral rain parameters

Martensitic Phase Transition in Complex NiTi-Based Shape Memory Alloys from First-Principles Calculations

Recent rapid progresses in physics theory and computational power have made it possible to accurately predict the phase transitions and martensitic transition temperatures (MTTs) in shape memory alloys (SMAs) from first principles. However, previously theory and calculations [1-4] were applied only to study highly ordered stoichiometric binary alloys such as NiTi, PdTi and NiHf. Here we report on our recent first-principles investigations [5,6] on Ni 0.5 Ti 0.5-x Hf x and Pd x Ni 0.5-x Ti 0.5 ternaries and off-stoichiometric NiTi, and the predicted martensitic phase transitions in these complex SMAs are in good agreement with experimental findings. In particular, the calculated MTTs for all these compositions are within 100 K compared with the corresponding measured data, and our results also reveal the origin of the striking asymmetry in MTT of the off-stoichiometric NiTi near equiatomic compositions. We will address various techniques to overcome the difficulty encountered in studying ternaries and off-stoichiometic binaries associated with disorder and/or much lowered symmetry. Our theoretical approach is expected to be a broadly applicable and predictive theory for designing complex SMAs with desirable properties. References: [1] J. B. Haskins, A. E. Thompson, and J. W. Surface intermediates identified using IR spectroscopy during the catalytic oxidation of C 2 H 6 on IrO 2 (1 1 0) at near-ambient pressures

Characterizing surface intermediates during catalysis is essential for developing mechanistic models of catalytic reactions and for identifying rate-controlling steps. Here, in this work, we used polarization-dependent reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (PD-RAIRS) to investigate surface intermediates that form on IrO 2 (1 1 0) during the catalytic oxidation of C 2 H 6 at pressures near 0.5 Torr. Our results show that adsorbed CO and HCO 2 are the only intermediates detectable with PD-RAIRS across a wide range of temperatures and reactant compositions during complete C 2 H 6 oxidation, giving rise to dominant peaks at about 2093 and 1310 cm −1 , respectively. These assignments were corroborated by RAIRS measurements following CO and HCOOH adsorption in ultrahigh vacuum, RAIRS with C 2 H 6 – 18 O 2 mixtures during catalysis and vibrational frequencies and IR intensities computed using density functional theory. We find that increasing the C 2 H 6 mole fraction in the reaction mixture raises the CO surface coverage relative to HCO 2 , correlating with increasing catalytic oxidation rates. The formation of CO and HCO 2 surface species at temperatures well below catalytic ignition indicates that the overall rate of C 2 H 6 oxidation on IrO 2 (1 1 0) is governed by steps late in the reaction sequence, such as H 2 O formation, CO oxidation and HCO 2 dehydrogenation. These findings provide key insight into the mechanism of alkane oxidation on IrO 2 (1 1 0) and valuable input for first-principles microkinetic modeling.

Theoretical search for possible Li–Ni–B crystal structures using an adaptive genetic algorithm

The structural diversity of rare-earth and transition metal borides indicates that alkali-transition metal borides (A-T-B) show tremendous promise in exhibiting a variety of crystal structures with different dimensionalities of T-B frameworks. On the other hand, the A-T-B ternary systems are severely underexplored because of the synthetic challenges associated with their preparation. Accurate and efficient computational predictions of low-energy stable and metastable phases can identify the optimal compositions of the hypothetical compounds in the A-T-B systems to guide the synthesis. As such, in this work, we have computationally discovered several new phases in the Li–Ni–B ternary system. The newly discovered LiNiB, Li 2 Ni 3 B, and Li 2 NiB phases expand the existing theoretical database, and the convex-hull surface of Li–Ni–B has been re-constructed. The lowest energy structure of the LiNiB compound has been found by an adaptive genetic algorithm with layered motif, which matches with the experimentally determined structure. According to our electrochemical calculations, LiNiB and another predicted layered Li 2 NiB compounds have great potential as anode materials for lithium batteries. The Li 2 Ni 3 B compound with the space group P4 3 32 was predicted to crystallize in a cubic structure composed of distorted octahedral units of BNi 6 , which is isostructural to two noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li 2 Pd 3 B and Li 2 Pt 3 B. While we were unable to experimentally confirm the Li 2 Ni 3 B compound utilizing the hydride synthetic route, attempts to synthesize this compound by alternate methods remain highly desirable, considering its potential superconducting properties.
