How Useful are Conventional I–Vs for Performance Calibration of Single- and Two-Junction Perovskite Solar Cells? A Statistical Analysis of Performance Data on ≈200 Cells from 30 Global Sources

As perovskite photovoltaics (PV) advance from the laboratory to commercial prototypes, their accurate and reliable performance testing is becoming increasingly important. The well-documented dynamic response of perovskite solar cells to an external applied voltage has led to the development of steady-state performance measurement methods; however, these methods have not been widely adopted by the perovskite PV community. A key reason for this is that steady-state measurement methods take tens of minutes to complete, as opposed to conventional "fast" current-voltage (I-V) measurements usually lasting a few seconds. Fast I-Vs arise from a snapshot, almost always not a steady-state condition of the device; however, given their widespread use, the question arises: how do performance parameters of perovskite PV compare when measured with fast I-V and with a steady-state method? Results compiled from approximately 200 perovskite PV cells, including single junction, and two-terminal perovskite-perovskite and perovskite-Si tandems, show that fast I-Vs can provide a useful measure of the open-circuit voltage of the devices, while the short-circuit current and the overall efficiency can be widely misestimated. Here, the implications of these findings on performance testing protocols are discussed and possible options for fast and accurate testing of perovskite PV are proposed.

Water-Fed, Photovoltaic-Driven Anion-Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis for Solar Hydrogen Production

Direct coupled photovoltaic (PV)-electrolysis is a promising approach for low-cost hydrogen production, avoiding the need for separate electricity generation. Without solar concentration, the operating current densities of a PV-electrolyzer are small, and low capital costs are needed to reach hydrogen production cost targets (<$2/kg). Anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers could be well-suited for this application due to their ability to use platinum group metal (PGM)-free catalysts and operate without supporting electrolytes, but a water-fed PV-AEM system has not yet been demonstrated. In this work, the performance of two AEM electrolyzer designs under pure-water, low-temperature, and diurnal-cycling conditions was evaluated. A simple PV-electrolyzer system design with direct electric coupling to a commercial 84 cm2 Si mini module and passive heating and water flow to the electrolyzer was used for on-sun testing in October 2025. The best-performing PV-AEM system achieved an average solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of 6.6% and a production rate of 15 mg/kWh/m2 of solar irradiance over 11 days. Minimal electrolyzer corrosion was observed, with no loss in efficiency over the diurnal cycles. While highlighting areas for improved electrolyzer and system design, this work is a proof of concept for distributed hydrogen production using inexpensive and abundant materials.

Power Loss and Safety Risks - Recoverable vs. Non-Recoverable?

This presentation presents an update to the PV fleet analysis on PV system degradation. A median system degradation of -0.7 %/year was found for almost 5000 inverter traces. No significant difference between silicon and CdTe technologies were found. Systems with trackers showed a slightly higher degradation. Silicon technologies such as PERC and heterojunction showed degradation similar to conventional technologies but also showed different degradation mechanisms. To achieve long lifetimes early failure must be minimized through qualification testing. Rapid detection during normal life is important as is the control of bill of materials in modules.

Energy Storage Sizing and Operation of an Integrated Utility-Scale PV+ESS Power Plant

Integration of an energy storage system (ESS) into a large-scale grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power plant is highly desirable to improve performance of the system and overcome the stochastic nature of PV power generation. Algorithms to size ESS within an integrated PV and ESS ( PV+ESS) power plant, conventionally, require a large number of high-resolution samples of PV generation. These algorithms are computationally expensive. In this paper, a two-day optimization algorithm that utilizes n-step constant power output dispatch every day from the PV+ESS power plant is proposed to size the ESS. Additionally, an n-step power dispatch every day through the one-year timeframe based optimization of the size of ESS is also performed. The proposed methods are computationally cheaper and provide acceptable accuracy with respect to the conventional sizing methods. The economics identified from the proposed methods are compared with the typical day-ahead hourly dispatch-based power production from the PV+ESS power plant. This comparison has shown similar economic performance showcasing the accuracy of the proposed methods in sizing the ESS. It also shows the potential for operating PV+ESS power plant in n-step constant power generation mode.

Bifacial PV Module Energy Modeling Validation Study

The cost delta between monofacial and bifacial photovoltaic (PV) modules was decreasing in 2018 when this study was initially proposed, making bifacial modules an attractive offering. However, there were limited field studies available that could be considered utility-scale representative, and PV module manufacturers were stating large ranges for the expected energy yield improvements of bifacial technology. This generated uncertainties regarding bifacial performance gains and the actual LCOE (levelized cost of energy). There was also relatively low confidence in the industry’s energy modeling tools’ ability to accurately predict bifacial energy yield, meaning that early adopters of bifacial modules were not able to fully account for the increased energy yield in their energy and financial models. The intent of this project was to provide the solar industry with greater certainty on the energy yield gains of bifacial modules and provide higher confidence in the ability for different energy modeling software to model bifacial PV site performance. Achieving this would allow for bifacial technology to become bankable (i.e. accepted by Independent Engineers, site financiers and other PV site stakeholders), offering a step change in PV site performance that had not been seen since the widespread adoption of the single-axis tracker. Over the course of this study other economic factors including a significant tariff exemption for bifacial modules resulted in accelerated adoption of bifacial technology throughout the US utility scale solar segment. The number of early adopters increased rapidly, and with many investors accepting this module choice the question of bifacial bankability was seemingly answered faster than expected. However, PVEL’s study has still achieved significant accomplishments in demonstrating the accuracy of bifacial modeling across three different software platforms. The results of this study have shown that the mean biased error (MBE) between the field data and the predicted values from all three software platforms were aligned with a maximum MBE of 1.3% and a minimum MBE of -1.8%.

Reliability of tandem solar cells and modules: what's next?

Hybrid tandem photovoltaic (PV) technology development has gained momentum in the last few years. This has been motivated by a need to push module efficiencies beyond what is theoretically capable with single-junction technologies to further accelerate total global PV deployment. Significant advances have been made with multiple material systems achieving tandem efficiencies over 30% in the last decade. All of the highest record efficiencies have been from laboratory-scale devices, with areas of 1 cm2 or less. Interestingly, there are multiple material combinations and terminal configurations that have demonstrated promising results. Despite these high laboratory efficiencies, reasonable service lifetimes (a useful operating lifetime of at least 25 years) are needed for tandems to compete with the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of traditional single junction PV technologies. Existing commercial Si PV products have demonstrated performance in the field with an average of less than 1% relative annual degradation in module and system performance, and many manufacturers now provide 30 year warranties on their products.

Power modeling of degraded PV systems: Case studies using a dynamically updated physical model (PV-Pro)

Power modeling, widely applied for health monitoring and power prediction, is crucial for the efficiency and reliability of Photovoltaic (PV) systems. The most common approach for power modeling uses a physical equivalent circuit model, with the core challenge being the estimation of model parameters. Traditional parameter estimation either relies on datasheet information, which does not reflect the system's current health status, especially for degraded PV systems, or requires additional I-V characterization, which is generally unavailable for large-scale PV systems. Thus, we build upon our previously developed tool, PV-Pro (originally proposed for degradation analysis), to enhance its application for power modeling of degraded PV systems. PV-Pro extracts model parameters from production data without requiring I-V characterization. This dynamic model, periodically updated, can closely capture the actual degradation status, enabling precise power modeling. PV-Pro is compared with popular power modeling techniques, including persistence, nominal physical, and various machine learning models. The results indicate that PV-Pro achieves outstanding power modeling performance, with an average nMAE of 1.4 % across four field-degraded PV systems, reducing error by 17.6 % compared to the best alternative technique. Furthermore, PV-Pro demonstrates robustness across different seasons and severities of degradation. The tool is available as a Python package at https://github.com/DuraMAT/pvpro.

Voltage mapping and local defects identification in solar cells using non-contact method

Electroluminescence, infrared imaging, and current–voltage curve techniques are used to detect and map underperforming cells in a photovoltaic module or the modules in a photovoltaic string. In this work, we present a non-contact electrostatic voltmeter technique to detect and map the underperforming spots in a cell and the cells in a module. This non-contact technique directly maps the charged surface voltage (671mV) of the superstrate glass, and it had an 11-mV difference with the voltmeter values (660mV). Another data set of voltage values obtained by electroluminescence images conversion into a voltage map showed a difference of 7mV with the non-contact voltmeter values. Further, the direct voltage values obtained at various good and poor-performing spots of the cells using this technique are 3.69V and 3.79V and are validated using the voltage values obtained in electroluminescence analysis and the difference in voltage obtained by the two techniques is determined to be less than 2%. In this work, we combine the strengths of two complementary techniques of the electrostatic voltmeter (strength: quantitative) and electroluminescence (strength: spatial mapping) to obtain a quantitative spatial mapping of defects. Furthermore, this work is extendable to detect the poor-performing modules in solar PV power plants.

PV Degradation - Mounting & Temperature

Several studies have found indications that PV degradation may increase in hotter climates. We show in this paper that degradation does correlate to higher module temperatures, but that these temperatures are significantly affected by the module mounting and. The mechanisms of degradation vary with module technology and quality. Using data from different HIT module installations we were able to extract an activation energy that is consistent with hydrogen passivation layer degradation. In addition, we show that low degradation in hot climates can be achieved for Al-BSF technology if properly installed to reduce heat transfer in order to thermally decouple the modules from the roof. We also found that monofacial and bifacial PERC module degradation is in line with historical degradation rates of Al-BSF.
