Multiple Phase Screen Electromagnetic Propagation Simulations of Starfish Prime Event

It has been decided at this point to pause development of the trans-ionospheric model, and the main goal of this document is to record the current status and maintain a list of references for the future. The 2D model appears to work: however, to truly gain meaningful information about the environment, the scintillation model should be integrated into an end-to-end communication link simulation, which includes much more phenomenology. It would be beneficial at this point to specify a particular link or system and import a HANE environments into existing simulations. Multiple realizations of the noise could then be applied, and communication signal budgets could be analyzed for particular systems.

Satellite Enveloped with STITCHED Engineering Sensors for Detection of Approaching Objects

Today as well as tomorrows spaceborne assets impact almost all areas of national and nuclear security. Spaceborne assets can not only collect and disseminate valuable data, well beyond just the visual, but also track terrestrial-based mobile assets in real-time, and active spaceborne platforms potentially pose serious risk to vulnerable earth-based systems and infrastructures. The capability to defend national spaceborne assets from attack/interference is critical for security interests. This effort supports this mission through the cost-effective preeminent detection of approaching threats to our nation’s vital resources, in order to help secure and trust these high-value assets against the threats of tomorrow. This project develops novel fabrication techniques for conformal, low-profile and lightweight leakywave antenna (LWA) detection/imaging systems, which fuses technical embroidery (TE) and laser ablation (LA) processes with LWA design. Technical embroidery is an emerging field in additive textile manufacturing where flexible materials and functionalized fabrics are created for a wide variety of uses and purposes, while laser ablation is the process of removing material from a solid surface by irradiating it with a laser beam. Here, thin, conformal antenna designs are designed, modeled and fabricated using both TE and LA, to create lightweight, flexible and conformal object detection and imaging radars. This novel development ensures our nation’s ability to field advanced lightweight and conformal technologies to protect spaceborne assets.

Overview of the LANL Double Shell Campaign [Slides]

A volume burning ignition target allows for high temperature with comparitvely lower areal density. The large number of interfaces allows for a deep investigation of the impact of hydrodynamic instabilities on implosion quality. Machine learning is currently being leveraged to improve the quality of the design. Due to the presence of high-z material we must take a deeper level of hohlraum physics into account compared to single shell designs.

Numerical Modeling of Laser Heating and Evaporation of a Single Droplet

Laser technology is being widely studied for controlled energy deposition for a range of applications, including flow control, ignition, combustion, and diagnostics. The absorption and scattering of laser radiation by liquid droplets in aerosols affects propagation of the laser beam in the atmosphere, while the ignition and combustion characteristics in combustion chambers are influenced by the evaporation rate of the sprayed fuel. In this work, we present a mathematical model built on OpenFOAM for laser heating and evaporation of a single droplet in the diffusion-dominated regime taking into account absorption of the laser radiation, evaporation process, and vapor flow dynamics. The developed solver is validated against available experimental and numerical data for heating and evaporation of ethanol and water droplets. The two main regimes—continuous and pulsed laser heating—are explored. For continuous laser heating, the peak temperature is higher for larger droplets. For pulsed laser heating, when the peak irradiance is close to transition to the boiling regime, the temporal dynamics of the droplet temperature does not depend on the droplet size. With the empirical normalization of time, the dynamics of the droplet shrinkage and cooling are found to be independent of droplet sizes and peak laser intensities.

Selective CW Laser Synthesis of MoS2 and Mixture of MoS2 and MoO2 from (NH4)2MoS4 Film

Very recently, the synthesis of 2D MoS2 and WS2 through pulsed laser-directed thermolysis can achieve wafer-scale and large-area structures, in ambient conditions. In this paper, we report the synthesis of MoS2 and MoS2 oxides from (NH4)2MoS4 film using a visible continuous-wave (CW) laser at 532 nm, instead of the infrared pulsed laser for the laser-directed thermolysis. The (NH4)2MoS4 film is prepared by dissolving its crystal powder in DI water, sonicating the solution, and dip-coating onto a glass slide. We observed a laser intensity threshold for the laser synthesis of MoS2, however, it occurred in a narrow laser intensity range. Above that range, a mixture of MoS2 and MoO2 is formed, which can be used for a memristor device, as demonstrated by other research groups. We did not observe a mixture of MoS2 and MoO3 in the laser thermolysis of (NH4)2MoS4. The laser synthesis of MoS2 in a line pattern is also achieved through laser scanning. Due to of the ease of CW beam steering and the fine control of laser intensities, this study can lead toward the CW laser-directed thermolysis of (NH4)2MoS4 film for the fast, non-vacuum, patternable, and wafer-scale synthesis of 2D MoS2.

The VISTA spacecraft: Advantages of ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion) for interplanetary fusions propulsion applications

Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) is an attractive engine power source for interplanetary manned spacecraft, especially for near-term missions requiring minimum flight duration, because ICF has inherent high power-to-mass ratios and high specific impulses. We have developed a new vehicle concept called VISTA that uses ICF and is capable of round-trip manned missions to Mars in 100 days using A.D. 2020 technology. We describe VISTA's engine operation, discuss associated plasma issues, and describe the advantages of DT fuel for near-term applications. Although ICF is potentially superior to non-fusion technologies for near-term interplanetary transport, the performance capabilities of VISTA cannot be meaningfully compared with those of magnetic-fusion systems because of the lack of a comparable study of the magnetic-fusion systems. We urge that such a study be conducted.

The collective emission of electromagnetic waves from astrophysical jets - Luminosity gaps, BL Lacertae objects, and efficient energy transport

A model of the inner portions of astrophysical jets is constructed in which a relativistic electron beam is injected from the central engine into the jet plasma. This beam drives electrostatic plasma wave turbulence, which leads to the collective emission of electromagnetic waves. The emitted waves are beamed in the direction of the jet axis, so that end-on viewing of the jet yields an extremely bright source (BL Lacertae object). The relativistic electron beam may also drive long-wavelength electromagnetic plasma instabilities (firehose and Kelvin-Helmholtz) that jumble the jet magnetic field lines. After a sufficient distance from the core source, these instabilities will cause the beamed emission to point in random directions and the jet emission can then be observed from any direction relative to the jet axis. This combination of effects may lead to the gap turn-on of astrophysical jets. The collective emission model leads to different estimates for energy transport and the interpretation of radio spectra than the conventional incoherent synchrotron theory.

Radiation Shielding Plasma Sprayed Coatings Heads to International Space Station for MISSE-17 Experiments

NASA's Artemis program aims to return to the moon in search of scientific discoveries and establish a habitat using in-situ resource utilization. However, the past lunar explorations presented challenges, such as thermal cycles, solar and intergalactic cosmic radiation, and severe abrasive interaction of sharp lunar regolith particles[1]–[4].Dust mitigation and radiation shielding have become the most important concerns for lunar structural components and rovers which can fail abruptly without a protective solution. To counter these threats, Plasma Forming Laboratory(PFL) at Florida International University (FIU), in collaboration with NASA, has developed a novel multi-functional coating to protect the components synergistically against abrasion, erosion ,and radiation. The titanium-boron nitride composite coatings were prepared using the atmospheric plasma spray technique from engineered composite powders [5], [6].The coatings were subjected to extensive characterization and tribological study with lunar mare simulant JSC-1A, which shows tremendous improvement in the wear performance. The coatings subjected to neutron radiation shielding experiments at NASA Langley Research Center exhibited significantly improved neutron attenuation capacity compared to the substrate. The coating is selected to undergo radiation exposure on the International Space Station as a part of MISSE-17 (Materials International Space Station Experiment).
