Effects of wing bend on the aerodynamic characteristics of a low aspect ratio oblique wing

Static longitudinal and lateral/directional force and moment results are presented for an elliptical oblique wing (aspect ratio 6) mounted on top of a body of revolution. The wing was tested at various sweep angles ranging from 0 to 60 deg throughout a Mach-number range of 0.6 to 1.4. Increasing the upward bend along the wing span resulted in no significant improvement in the linearity of the moment curves, but required an impractical wing pivot location to eliminate the rolling moments at low lift. Linear theory gave satisfactory predictions of the lift and moment-curve slopes at low lift.

Some unusual oscillating bearing applications in liquid propellant rocket engines

Liquid propellant rocket engines have some unique applications for highly loaded oscillating-motion bearings operating at cryogenic temperatures and vacuum environment conditions. Among these are (1) thrust attitude control gimbal bearings that permit pivoting of the entire rocket engine and (2) bearings in the linkages of ducting bellows joints that articulate when the engine gimbals. The main rocket engines for first, second, and third stages of the Saturn vehicle have thrust vector control gimbals which use PTFE liner bearing materials and ducting linkage bearings using solid film dry lubricants, both to reduce friction and provide required wear life. Data on the frictional and wear characteristics of these materials, while operating under varying temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions, are presented. A discussion of the bearing designs for flexible bellows joint linkages is also presented.

Free-flight model investigation of a vertical-attitude VTOL fighter with twin vertical tails

Free-flight tests were conducted in the Langley full-scale tunnel to determine the stability and control characteristics of a vertical-attitude VTOL fighter having twin vertical tails and a pivoted fuselage forebody (nose-cockpit) arrangement. The flight tests included hovering flights and transition flights from hover to conventional forward flight. Static force tests were also made to aid in the analysis of the flight tests. The model exhibited satisfactory stability and control characteristics, and the transition from hovering flight to conventional forward flight was relatively smooth and straightforward.

Integrated orbital servicing study for low-cost payload programs. Volume 1: Executive summary

Various operating methodologies to achieve low-cost space operations were investigated as part of the Space Transportation System (STS) planning. The emphasis was to show that the development investment, initial fleet costs, and supporting facilities for the STS could be effectively offset by exploiting the capabilities of the STS to satisfy mission requirements and reduce the cost of payload programs. The following major conclusions were reached: (1) the development of an on-orbit servicer maintenance system is compatible with many spacecraft programs and is recommended as the most cost-effective system, (2) spacecraft can be designed to be serviceable with acceptable design, weight, volume, and cost effects, (3) use of on-orbit servicing over a 12 year period results in savings ranging between four and nine billion dollars, (4) the pivoting arm on-orbit servicer was selected and a preliminary design was prepared, (5) orbital maintenance has no significant impact on the STS.

Integrated orbital servicing study for low-cost payload programs. Volume 2: Technical and cost analysis

Orbital maintenance concepts were examined in an effort to determine a cost effective orbital maintenance system compatible with the space transportation system. An on-orbit servicer maintenance system is recommended as the most cost effective system. A pivoting arm on-orbit servicer was selected and a preliminary design was prepared. It is indicated that orbital maintenance does not have any significant impact on the space transportation system.

Effect of wing bend on the experimental force and moment characteristics of an oblique wing

Static longitudinal and lateral/directional force and moment characteristics are presented for an elliptical oblique wing mounted on top of a Sears-Haack body of revolution. The wing had an aspect ratio of 6 (based on the unswept span) and was tested at various sweep angles relative to the body axis ranging from 0 to 60 deg. In an attempt to create more symmetrical spanwise wing stalling characteristics, both wing panels were bent upward to produce washout on the trailing wing panel and washing on the leading wing panel. Small fluorescent tufts were attached to the wing surface to indicate the stall progression on the wing. The tests were conducted throughout a Mach number range from 0.6 to 1.4 at a constant unit Reynolds number of 8.2 x 10 per meter. The test results indicate that upward bending of the wing panels had only a small effect on the linearity of the moment curves and would require an impractical wing-pivot location at low lift to eliminate the rolling moment resulting from this bending.

Locking mechanism for orthopedic braces

A locking mechanism for orthopedic braces is described which automatically prevents or permits the relative pivotable movement between a lower brace member and an upper brace member. The upper and lower brace members are provided with drilled bores within which a slidable pin is disposed, and depending upon the inclination of the brace members with respect to a vertical plane, the slidable pin will be interposed between both brace members. The secondary or auxiliary latching device includes a spring biased, manually operable lever bar arrangement which is manually unlatched and automatically latched under the influence of the spring.

The use of LANDSAT-1 imagery in mapping and managing soil and range resources in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska

The author has identified the following significant results. Evaluation of ERTS-1 imagery for the Sand Hills region of Nebraska has shown that the data can be used to effectively measure several parameters of inventory needs. (1) Vegetative biomass can be estimated with a high degree of confidence using computer compatable tape data. (2) Soils can be mapped to the subgroup level with high altitude aircraft color infrared photography and to the association level with multitemporal ERTS-1 imagery. (3) Water quality in Sand Hills lakes can be estimated utilizing computer compatable tape data. (4) Center pivot irrigation can be inventoried from satellite data and can be monitored regarding site selection and relative success of establishment from high altitude aircraft color infrared photography. (5) ERTS-1 data is of exceptional value in wide-area inventory of natural resource data in the Sand Hills region of Nebraska.

Furlable antenna

An improved furlable antenna particularly suited for use in a celestial space environment is described. The antenna is characterized by an actuator comprising an elastomeric member of an annular configuration, an annular array of uniformly spaced antenna ribs rigidly affixed at the base ends to an actuator which enables it to be supported for pivotal displacement from a deployed configuration. The ribs are radially extended from the actuator to a furled configuration. The ribs are extended parallel to the axis of the actuator with flexible reflecting web affixed to the ribs, with angularly spaced bearing blocks.

Oblique wing transonic transport configuration development

Studies of transport aircraft designed for boom-free supersonic flight show the variable sweep oblique wing to be the most efficient configuration for flight at low supersonic speeds. Use of this concept leads to a configuration that is lighter, quieter, and more fuel efficient than symmetric aircraft designed for the same mission. Aerodynamic structural, weight, aeroelastic and flight control studies show the oblique wing concept to be technically feasible. Investigations are reported for wing planform and thickness, pivot design and weight estimation, engine cycle (bypass ratio), and climb, descent and reserve fuel. Results are incorporated into a final configuration. Performance, weight, and balance characteristics are evaluated. Flight control requirements are reviewed, and areas in which further research is needed are identified.

Some questions of space bioengineering

Zero-gravity offers selective effect on growth and metabolic activity unicellular organisms as well as unique opportunities in purification of organic compounds. These make it possible to consider the biosynthesis and recovery of certain metabolites economically feasible in space. Design, construction and operation of systems for the above mentioned purposes requires interdisciplinary actions within the scope of a new discipline: space bioengineering. The problems and perspectives of this discipline particularly in the application of bioreactor-recovery systems in space to manufacture metabolites of high economic and scientific value. Special attention is paid to pivotal factors such as various mass transport phenomena, contamination control, automatic control of optimum environment and synchronization of the operation of the biological (biosynthesis) and the physiochemical (recovery-purification) systems.

Rotating launch device for a remotely piloted aircraft

A method and apparatus for launching a remotely piloted aircraft is disclosed, wherein the aircraft is revolved about a fixed pivot point until a predetermined speed is reached whereupon the vehicle is released from the launching apparatus. The vehicle is attached to one end of a rotatable arm, the imbalance on the arm being counteracted by a counter weight attached to the opposite end. The counter weight is released from the arm at the same time as the aircraft so as to avoid structural damage to the apparatus caused by rotation in the unbalanced condition. The arm is oriented such that it rotates in a plane inclined obliquely to the local gravitational field of the launch site.
