Impulsive penetration of filamentary plasma elements into the magnetospheres of the earth and Jupiter

Assuming that the solar wind plasma is usually nonuniform over distances of 10,000 km or less, it is shown that filamentary plasma elements stretched out from the sun can penetrate impulsively and become engulfed into the magnetosphere. The diamagnetic effects associated with these plasma inhomogeneities are observed in outer magnetospheres and magnetosheaths as dips or directional discontinuities in the magnetic field measurements. From the mean penetration distances of these diamagnetic plasma elements one can deduce a mean deceleration time, as well as an approximate value of the integrated Pedersen conductivity in the polar cusp of the earth and Jupiter.

Solar energy market penetration models - Science or number mysticism

The forecast market potential of a solar technology is an important factor determining its R&D funding. Since solar energy market penetration models are the method used to forecast market potential, they have a pivotal role in a solar technology's development. This paper critiques the applicability of the most common solar energy market penetration models. It is argued that the assumptions underlying the foundations of rigorously developed models, or the absence of a reasonable foundation for the remaining models, restrict their applicability.

Operational evaluation of thunderstorm penetration test flights during project Storm Hazards '80

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is conducting a research project called Storm Hazards '80 in order to study the prediction, detectability and avoidance of the hazards of severe storms for aircraft operations. The project, using a highly instrumented NASA F-106B airplane to penetrate thunderstorms, gathered and correlated data from both airborne and ground based instrumentation. The objectives of this project are to determine the effects of lightning on the design and operation of aircraft composite structures and digital electronic systems. The data will be used to determine the correlation of lightning hazards with other severe storm hazards, such as heavy precipitation, hail, turbulence and wind-shear, in order to develop an initial data base for use in design and avoidance. The NASA F-106B was equipped with a weather radar, stormscope, lightning measurement instrumentation and air sampling equipment. This paper will focus on the operational aspects of thunderstorm penetrations and the pilot techniques used to avoid the extremely hazardous portions of the storm such as the tornadoes and hail. It will deal with the effects of the storm elements on the aircraft hardware, avionics and the crew.

Dynamics of the penetration boundaries of solar protons during a strong magnetic storm

The variations in the equatorial penetration boundary of solar protons with E sub p = 0.9 to 8.0 MeV during a strong magnetic storm of April 3 to 5, were analyzed. The dynamics of this boundary is compared with the dynamics of the outer trapping boundary of electrons with E sub e = - 0.3 to 0.6 MeV. The solar-proton penetration and the structure of the real magnetic field are studied. The unique data on the thin structure of development of a magnetospheric substorm were obtained for the first time.

Acoustic penetration and impact detector for micrometeoroid and space debris application

The Two-Stage Acoustic Penetration and Impact Detector is a simple device for measuring the impact event time, the projectile velocity, the flight path direction and the momentum. The results of laboratory tests have shown that this detector can be used in a wide range of projectile size and velocity. According to measurement purposes the size of the detection area, the distance between the front foil and the target plate and the number of microphones as well as the evaluation procedure can easily be adjusted. The target plate area can also be replaced by another foil detector, if two penetration stages are preferred. This active detector is suitable for a variety of applications in meteoroid and space debris exploration. It can also be supplied with capture cell properties for chemical analysis of inside-deposits. Therefore, this measurement principal has been taken into consideration as a possible flight experiment for instance for a later Longer Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) flight or future space station activities.

Forest canopy characterization and vegetation penetration assessment with space-borne radar

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Shuttle Imaging Radar-B mission were used to analyze the effects of radar incidence angle on information content and vegetation penetration. Three SAR data sets using incidence angles of 26, 46, and 58 deg were acquired over the mangrove jungles of Southern Bangladesh. The data sets were digitally processed using 3 x 3, 7 x 7, and 11 x 11 spatial filters and geometrically registered to a multisource-multilevel-corraborative data base consisting of Landsat data, forest map data, and in situ acquired forest enumeration and topographic information. Analyses revealed that significant vegetation 'penetration' was found at all angles, and that tree and canopy structural morphology may exert an influence on this phenomenon.

Shuttle Imaging Radar - Physical controls on signal penetration and subsurface scattering in the Eastern Sahara

Interpretation of Shuttle Imaging Radar-A (SIR-A) images by McCauley et al. (1982) dramatically changed previous concepts of the role that fluvial processes have played over the past 10,000 to 30 million years in shaping this now extremely flat, featureless, and hyperarid landscape. In the present paper, the near-surface stratigraphy, the electrical properties of materials, and the types of radar interfaces found to be responsible for different classes of SIR-A tonal response are summarized. The dominant factors related to efficient microwave signal penetration into the sediment blanket include (1) favorable distribution of particle sizes, (2) extremely low moisture content and (3) reduced geometric scattering at the SIR-A frequency (1.3 GHz). The depth of signal penetration that results in a recorded backscatter, here called 'radar imaging depth', was documented in the field to be a maximum of 1.5 m, or 0.25 of the calculated 'skin depth', for the sediment blanket. Radar imaging depth is estimated to be between 2 and 3 m for active sand dune materials. Diverse permittivity interfaces and volume scatterers within the shallow subsurface are responsible for most of the observed backscatter not directly attributable to grazing outcrops. Calcium carbonate nodules and rhizoliths concentrated in sandy alluvium of Pleistocene age south of Safsaf oasis in south Egypt provide effective contrast in premittivity and thus act as volume scatterers that enhance SIR-A portrayal of younger inset stream channels.

A proposed comet nucleus penetrator for the Comet Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby mission

The importance of the study of comets has led NASA to plan a mission to rendezvous with comet Tempel 2 in 1997. Critical to the understanding of comets will be measurements of the nucleus material to determine its elemental and isotopic composition, its mechanical properties, and its thermal state and properties. this paper describes a proposal for a Comet Nucleus Penetrator to accomplish these measurement goals. The Comet Nucleus Penetrator will implant instruments into the comet's nucleus beneath a probable volatile-depleted surface mantle into material more representative of the bulk composition of the nucleus.

Navigation of the Mariner Tempel 2 mission - Orbit phase and penetrator deployment

The navigation of the Mariner Mark II spacecraft about the comet Tempel 2 in the Comet Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) mission is described. This mission is the first of a series using the Mariner Mark II spacecraft planned for the 1990's and thereafter. The primary purpose of the mission is to orbit the nucleus of the periodic comet Tempel 2 and study it at close range. A secondary purpose is to fly by and observe one or two asteroids enroute to the comet. During the orbital phase of the mission, a penetrator will be deployed from the spacecraft to impact the surface of the comet and measure the composition and other properties of the nucleus. Navigation accuracies are given in this paper for spacecraft and penetrator trajectory prediction and control. The orbit determination performance in support of science observations while in orbit about the nucleus is also described.

Nonlinear compressible convection penetrating into stable layers and producing internal gravity waves

Penetrative convection spanning multiple scale heights is studied within a simple stellar envelope consisting of three layers: a convectively unstable middle layer bounded above and below by stably stratified polytropes. Two-dimensional numerical simulations are used to investigate the fully compressible nonlinear motions that ensue. The cellular flows display prominent downward-directd plumes surrounded by broader regions of upflow. Such asymmetry arises because pressure fluctuations accentuate buoyancy driving in the concentrated plumes and can even lead to weak buoyancy braking in the surrounding ascending flows. As the plumes plunge downward into a region of stable stratification, they serve to excite a broad spectrum of internal gravity waves there. The induced waves are not passive, for they feed back upon the plumes by deflecting them sideways, thereby modulating the amplitude of the convection in time even in the unstable layer. The penetrative motions that billow upward into the upper stable zone are distinctly weaker, and they cascade back downward toward the unstable zone over a broad horizontal scale. The strong excitation of gravity waves by the convection has implications for gradual mixing deep within a star.

Submillimeter and far infrared line observations of M17 SW: A clumpy molecular cloud penetrated by UV radiation

Millimeter, submillimeter, and far infrared spectroscopic observations of the M17 SW star formation region are discussed. The results require the molecular cloud near the interface to be clumpy or filamentary. As a consequence, far ultraviolet radiation from the central OB stellar cluster can penetrate into the dense molecular cloud to a depth of several pc, thus creating bright and extended (CII) emission from the photodissociated surfaces of dense atomic and molecular clumps or sheets. The extended (CII) emission throughout the molecular cloud SW of the M17 complex has a level 20 times higher than expected from a single molecular cloud interface exposed to an ultraviolet radiation field typical of the solar neighborhood. This suggests that the molecular cloud as a whole is penetrated by ultraviolet radiation and has a clumpy or filamentary structure. The number of B stars expected to be embedded in the M17 molecular cloud probably can provide the UV radiation necessary for the extended (CII) emission. Alternatively, the UV radiation could be external, if the interstellar radiation in the vicinity of M17 is higher than in the solar neighborhood.

Temperature dependence of penetration depth in thin film niobium

A novel technique is presented which should allow precise determination of the temperature dependence of the inductance, and hence of the penetration depth, of superconducting niobium thin-film structures. Four niobium thin-film stripline inductors are arranged in a bridge configuration, and inductance differences are measured using a potentiometric technique with a SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) as the null detector. Numerical simulations of the stripline inductances are presented which allow the performance of the measurement technique to be evaluated. The prediction of the two-fluid model for the penetration-depth temperature dependence is given for reduced temperatures of 0.3 to 0.9. The experimental apparatus and its resolution and accuracy are discussed.
