Backup flight control system functional evaluator software manual

The software for the Backup Flight Control System Functional Evaluator (BFCSFE) on a Data General Corporation Nova 1200 computer consists of three programs: the ground support program, the operational flight program (OFP), and the ground pulse code modulation (PCM) program. The Nova OFP software is structurally as close as possible to the AP101 code; therefore, this document highlights and describes only those areas of the Nova OFP that are significantly different from the AP101. Since the Ground Support Program was developed to meet BFCSFE requirements and differs considerably from the AP101 code, it is described in detail.

Space shuttle engineering and operations support. Avionics system engineering

The shuttle avionics integration laboratory (SAIL) requirements for supporting the Spacelab/orbiter avionics verification process are defined. The principal topics are a Spacelab avionics hardware assessment, test operations center/electronic systems test laboratory (TOC/ESL) data processing requirements definition, SAIL (Building 16) payload accommodations study, and projected funding and test scheduling. Because of the complex nature of the Spacelab/orbiter computer systems, the PCM data link, and the high rate digital data system hardware/software relationships, early avionics interface verification is required. The SAIL is a prime candidate test location to accomplish this early avionics verification.

Coding isotropic images

Rate distortion functions for two-dimensional homogeneous isotropic images are compared with the performance of 5 source encoders designed for such images. Both unweighted and frequency weighted mean square error distortion measures are considered. The coders considered are differential PCM (DPCM) using six previous samples in the prediction, herein called 6 pel (picutre element) DPCM; simple DPCM using single sample prediction; 6 pel DPCM followed by entropy coding; 8 x 8 discrete cosine transform coder, and 4 x 4 Hadamard transform coder. Other transform coders were studied and found to have about the same performance as the two transform coders above. With the mean square error distortion measure DPCM with entropy coding performed best. The relative performance of the coders changes slightly when the distortion measure is frequency weighted mean square error. The performance of all the coders was separated by only about 4 dB.

Development of a low temperature phase change material package

Test data obtained for a low temperature phase change material (PCM) canisters are presented. The canister was designed to provide up to 30 w-hrs of storage capacity at approximately -90 C with an overall thermal conductance which is greater than 8 w/deg C. N-heptane which is an n-paraffin and has a -90.6 C freezing point was used as the working fluid. The canister was fabricated from aluminum and has an aluminum honeycomb core. Its void volume permits service temperatures up to 70 C. Results obtained from component and system's tests indicate well defined melting and freezing points which are repeatable and within 1 C of each other. Subcooling effects are less than 0.5 C and are essentially negligible. Measured storage capacities are within 94 to 88% the theoretical.

High-flying Mini-Sniffer RPV - Mars bound

The Mini-Sniffer is a small unmanned survey aircraft developed by NASA to conduct turbulence and atmospheric pollution measurements from ground level to an altitude of 90,000 ft. Carrying a 25-lb air sampling apparatus, the Mini-Sniffer typically cruises for one hour at 70,000 ft before being remotely piloted back to earth. A hydrazine monopropellant engine powers the craft, while a PCM telemetering system and a radar transponder provide control functions. Development of a high-performance low-Reynolds-number airfoil could make the research craft suitable for a low-altitude terrain-following mission on Mars.

Bit timing with pulse distortion and intersymbol interference

Pulse distortion and intersymbol interference due to insufficient filtering in PCM and PSK channels cause performance degradation in terms of both bit error probabilities and timing errors. This paper reports the results of a study analyzing these effects on bit timing subsystems. Consideration is given to both the filter-rectifier and transition tracking type of timing subsystem. Although both these systems perform similarly in high SNR and ideal pulse models, pulse distortion and intersymbol affects each differently. The primary effects in both systems is to cause the presence of an irreducible mean squared timing error due to the intersymbol which limits the ultimate performance. Design procedures to minimize the anomalies of both systems are presented, and indicate modifications of the standard timing subsystems. It is found that specific design directions depend on whether the intersymbol or the receiver noise tends to dominate.

Voice encoding for the Space Shuttle using adaptive delta modulation

The paper describes the SONG and modified ABATE adaptive delta modulation algorithms for voice encoding. Waveforms of the response of the delta modulators to channel errors are given, and performance data which show the relationship between channel errors and word intelligibility are provided. An analytic derivation yielding a comparison between PCM and adaptive delta modulation with respect to channel errors is given. The Space Shuttle is employing the modified-ABATE device because it can tolerate a high error rate and operates at a relatively low sampling rate.

High-temperature molten salt thermal energy storage systems

The results of comparative screening studies of candidate molten carbonate salts as phase change materials (PCM) for advanced solar thermal energy storage applications at 540 to 870 C (1004 to 1600 F) and steam Rankine electric generation at 400 to 540 C (752 to 1004 F) are presented. Alkali carbonates are attractive as latent heat storage materials because of their relatively high storage capacity and thermal conductivity, low corrosivity, moderate cost, and safe and simple handling requirements. Salts were tested in 0.1 kWhr lab scale modules and evaluated on the basis of discharge heat flux, solidification temperature range, thermal cycling stability, and compatibility with containment materials. The feasibility of using a distributed network of high conductivity material to increase the heat flux through the layer of solidified salt was evaluated. The thermal performance of an 8 kWhr thermal energy storage (TES) module containing LiKCO3 remained very stable throughout 5650 hours and 130 charge/discharge cycles at 480 to 535 C (896 to 995 F). A TES utilization concept of an electrical generation peaking subsystem composed of a multistage condensing steam turbine and a TES subsystem with a separate power conversion loop was defined. Conceptual designs for a 100 MW sub e TES peaking system providing steam at 316 C, 427 C, and 454 C (600 F, 800 F, and 850 F) at 3.79 million Pa (550 psia) were developed and evaluated. Areas requiring further investigation have also been identified.

Active heat exchange system development for latent heat thermal energy storage

Various active heat exchange concepts were identified from among three generic categories: scrapers, agitators/vibrators and slurries. The more practical ones were given a more detailed technical evaluation and an economic comparison with a passive tube-shell design for a reference application. Two concepts selected for hardware development are a direct contact heat exchanger in which molten salt droplets are injected into a cooler counterflowing stream of liquid metal carrier fluid, and a rotating drum scraper in which molten salt is sprayed onto the circumference of a rotating drum, which contains the fluid heat sink in an internal annulus near the surface. A fixed scraper blade removes the solidified salt from the surface which has been nickel plated to decrease adhesion forces. Suitable phase change material (PCM) storage media with melting points in the temperature range of interest (250 C to 400 C) were investigated. The specific salt recommended for laboratory tests was a chloride eutectic (20.5KCl-24/5 NaCl-55.0MgCl 2% by wt.), with a nominal melting point of 385 C.

A miniaturized digital telemetry system for physiological data transmission

A physiological date telemetry system, consisting basically of a portable unit and a ground base station was designed, built, and tested. The portable unit to be worn by the subject is composed of a single crystal controlled transmitter with AM transmission of digital data and narrowband FM transmission of voice; a crystal controlled FM receiver; thirteen input channels follwed by a PCM encoder (three of these channels are designed for ECG data); a calibration unit; and a transponder control system. The ground base station consists of a standard telemetry reciever, a decoder, and an FM transmitter for transmission of voice and transponder signals to the portable unit. The ground base station has complete control of power to all subsystems in the portable unit. The phase-locked loop circuit which is used to decode the data, remains in operation even when the signal from the portable unit is interrupted.

Active heat exchange system development for latent heat thermal energy storage

Five tasks to select, design, fabricate, test and evaluate candidate active heat exchanger modules for future applications to solar and conventional utility power plants were discussed. Alternative mechanizations of active heat exchange concepts were analyzed for use with heat of fusion phase change materials (PCMs) in the temperature range of 250 to 350 C. Twenty-six heat exchange concepts were reviewed, and eight were selected for detailed assessment. Two candidates were selected for small-scale experimentation: a coated tube and shell heat exchanger and a direct contact reflux boiler. A dilute eutectic mixture of sodium nitrate and sodium hydroxide was selected as the PCM from over 50 candidate inorganic salt mixtures. Based on a salt screening process, eight major component salts were selected initially for further evaluation. The most attractive major components in the temperature range of 250 to 350 C appeared to be NaNO3, NaNO2, and NaOH. Sketches of the two active heat exchange concepts selected for test are given.

Design of a 24-channel transmultiplexer

The design of a transmultiplexer capable of performing the bilateral conversion between one 1544 kbit/s digital signal (which represents 24 PCM coded voice channels) and two analog group signals (each one containing 12 voice channels in the 60-108 kHz band) is investigated. It is shown that an FIR filter bank required as part of such a transmultiplexer can be realized efficiently by cascading a discrete cosine transform processor and a weighting network. Fast convolution algorithms are derived for evaluating the cosine transform. A method of using the symmetry conditions to reduce the computation rate in the weighting network and an elegant hardware configuration for implementing it are also discussed.

The Spacelab Experiment Interface Device (SEID)

The Spacelab experiment interface device (SEID) is described which simulates the electrical, and logical connections of the Spacelab remote acquisition unit (RAU), the interface functions of the Spacelab experiment computer software, and the electrical aspects of the high rate multiplexer. Simulated RAU interfaces include PCM serial channels (up to four), user time clock (UTC), flexible inputs (up to 128) and discrete outputs (up to 64). Connectors are logically compatible with the rau. be instructed to execute sequences of input/output commands to the RAU, similar to those performed during flight. This approximation of the experiment computer software is adequate to detect interface problems and prevent these from occurring during Spacelab payload integration. The SEID hardware is a microprocessor based system, utilizing an 8085 microprocessor with 6K of PROM and 4K of static RAM. The basic unit is augmented with an LSI-11 microcomputer to provide disk storage and a more dynamic environment for generation of control data. A simulation of the general monitoring loop is provided to emulate Spacelab system timing.
