Differential electron scattering cross sections for the first optically forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II

Differential electron scattering cross sections have been measured for dipole-forbidden and resonance transitions in Mg II, Zn II and Cd II in the angular range theta = 4-17 deg at 50 eV. These provide the first recorded angular distributions for an optically forbidden transition. It is found that while the cross section for excitation of the 4s (2)S-3d(9)4s(2) (2)D transition in Zn II is small, those for the 3s (2)S-3d (2)D, 4s (2)S (unresolved lines) in Mg II, and the 5s (2)S-4d(9)5s(2) D in Cd II are comparable in magnitude with the cross sections for resonance excitation. In addition, for Cd II it is found that the allowed and forbidden transitions have very similar angular distributions, and it is proposed that excitation to the 2D state may be dominated by a virtual 'double-dipole' transition via the 2P state. Also, the total excitation cross section of the resonance 2P state in Cd II is a factor of four higher than that predicted by the Gaunt factor approximation, suggesting that the accepted value for the oscillator strength may be too low.

The 1088 A feature toward reddened stars

An analysis of the interstellar feature near 1088 A in spectra obtained with the Copernicus satellite suggests that neutral chlorine is the absorber. The mean wavelength, as determined from 15 lines of sight, of 1088.052 + or - 0.023 A compares favorably with the chlorine line at 1088.062 A. A strong correlation with Cl I 1347 A indicates an oscillator strength for 1088 A of 0.04. Above a threshold at N(H2) of roughly 10 to the 19th/sq cm, the equivalent width of 1088 A varies approximately with N(H2). The variation with H2 is similar to the variation of Na I and C I with H2.

Quantitative photoabsorption and fluorescence study of H2O and D2O at 50-190 nm

The photoabsorption cross sections and the fluorescence quantum yields of H2O and D2O were measured in the 50-190 nm region using synchrotron radiation as a light source. The oscillator strengths for the Rydberg states of H2O and D2O were determined from the absorption cross sections measured. The processes for the production of fluorescence from the excited species H(asterisk) (n greater than 2), D(asterisk) (n greater than 2), OH(asterisk) (A) and OD(asterisk) (A) are discussed. The upper limit for the dissociation energy of D(D-OD) was determined, from the threshold of the OD(A-X) fluorescence, to be 5.14 + or - 0.01 eV. The upper limit for the cross section of visible fluorescence from the excited H2O(+) ions was determined to be 2 x 10 to the -19th sq cm. A comparison between the photoexcitation spectra of H2O and D2O is made.

The 2D Rydberg series in Al I

High quality ab initio electonic structure calculations were performed on the 2D Rydberg series in Al I. The configuration 3s3p2(2D) is shown to contribute substantially to the lowest four 2D Rydberg states. The same configuration also contributes substantially to a 2D state embedded in the ionization continuum. Computed oscillator strengths for the first six members of the 2D Rydberg transitions are given: these should be of substantially high accuracy than currently available values.

Diffuse and dark clouds in the interstellar medium

Observations of clouds in the ISM of the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, obtained with the IUE satellite since its launch in 1978, are reviewed. Consideration is given to the techniques used to analyze IUE Maxwellian growth curves and oscillator strengths, the general structure of the Galactic ISM, the high-velocity clouds, heavy-element depletion, and observations toward strongly reddened stars in the outer portions of dark clouds. Theoretical models of interstellar dust formation and selective and nonselective removal of elements from dust grains are discussed; observations of reflection nebulae and their implications for light scattering by dust are examined; the dynamics and ionization structure of the Galactic halo ISM are described; and the Magellanic Cloud observations are briefly characterized. Diagrams, graphs, and tables of numerical data are provided.

Limitations of the semirelativistic approach in sum rules and related calculations in atomic physics

The semirelativistic approach, as applied to sum-rule calculations, can yield very inaccurate results for high-Z systems; the apparently good agreement previously reported is fortuitous, due to the application of an approximate eigenstate of the semirelativistic Hamiltonian. Attention is given to one-electron atomic systems, and the results obtained are discussed with a view to their implications for many-electron systems. The many-electron problem is complicated by a lack of clarity as to the relative importance of contributions due to correlation effects among the electrons, their effect on the E2 oscillator strength, and the retardation correction to the E1 transition.

The fluorescence of cometary OH

A new solar spectral atlas, improved oscillator strengths, and additional transitions have been incorporated in calculations of the fluorescent equilibrium of the OH molecule in comets as a function of heliocentric distance and radial velocity. Comparisons of detailed, ultraviolet band profiles have been made with the observed, high-resolution spectra of eight comets. While a purely fluorescent equilibrium calculation is sufficient to reproduce the major variations seen in the band structure from one comet to another, some collisional quenching of the inversion of the X2II3/2 Lambda-doublet ground state is required to match the detailed features. The relative population inversion of the upper and lower levels of the ground state is also calculated as a function of both distance and velocity, with the results being consistent with 18 cm radio observations. Predictions of the infrared OH vibrational bands are made; the 1-0 band should be observable if a sufficiently high spectral resolution is employed.

Determination of spectroscopic properties of atmospheric molecules from high resolution vacuum ultraviolet cross section and wavelength measurements

Progress is given on work on: cross section measurements in the transmission window regions of the Schumann-Runge bands of oxygen; the determinations of predissociation linewidths; the theoretical calculation of band oscillator strengths of the Schumann-Runge absorption bands of O-16O-18; the determination of molecular spectroscopic constants; and the combined Herzberg continuum cross sections. The experimental investigations relevant to the cross section measurements, predissociation linewidths, and molecular spectroscopic constants are effected at high resolution with a 6.65 m scanning spectrometer which is, by virtue of its small instrumental width (FWHM = 0.0013 nm), suitable for cross section measurements of molecular bands with discrete rotational structure. Such measurements are needed for accurate calculations of the stratospheric production of atomic oxygen and heavy ozone formed following the photo-predissociation of O-16O-18 by solar radiation penetrating between the absorption lines of O-16(sub 2).

The atmospheric eclipse of 31 Cygni in the ultraviolet

Theoretical spectra are compared with high-dispersion IUE observations for the 1982 atmospheric eclipse of 31 Cyg. It is found that temperature increases with height in the chromosphere, showing a range of 5,000-14,400 K for four lines of sight. Turbulence remains in the range 20-25 km/s throughout the chromosphere. The turbulence and temperature values may be lower in chromospheric gas just above the temperature minimum. The temperature-minimum region of the upper photosphere was found to have a temperature near 2,500 K. The velocity structure of wind lines of O I, Si II, Mg II, and Fe II indicates that most of the wind on the side of the K supergiant toward the B dwarf is photoionized to the next higher ionization stage. Abundances of heavy elements are shown to be close to solar with anomalies that may be the result of systematic errors in the oscillator strengths.

Medium-resolution studies of extreme ultraviolet emission from N2 by electron impact - Vibrational perturbations and cross sections of the c4-prime 1Sigma(+)u and b-prime 1Sigma(+)u states

In a crossed-beam experiment the electron-impact-induced fluorescence spectrum of N2 in the extreme ultraviolet is studied at a spectral resolution of up to 0.03 nm. The optically thin experiment obtained the highest-resolution electron-impact emission spectrum of the Rydberg and valence states of N2. The spectral measurements provide the emission cross sections of each of the vibrational transitions of the Carroll-Yoshino and the Birge-Hopfield-II band systems. Laboratory vibrational-excitation cross sections arising from the mutual perturbation of the c4-prime 1Sigma(+)u and b-prime 1Sigma(+)u states by homogeneous configuration interactions are measured from 10 to 400 eV, and a modified Born approximation analytic model is given for them. The analysis leads to accurate band-system oscillator strengths. The relative emission and excitation cross sections each of the vibrational levels are compared. In addition, low-resolution measurements of the cross section of the atomic dissociation fragments (NI, NII, NIII) from 40 to 102 nm are made, and medium-resolution measurements are made of the emission cross section of the c4 1Pi(u), c5-prime 1Sigma(+)u, c5 1Pi(u), and c6-prime 1Sigma(+)u to X 1Sigma(+)g (0,0) transitions.

Matrix elements in the coupled-cluster approach - With application to low-lying states in Li

A procedure is suggested for evaluating matrix elements of an operator between wavefunctions in the coupled-cluster form. The use of the exponential ansatz leads to compact exponential expressions also for matrix elements. Algorithms are developed for summing all effects of one-particle clusters and certain chains of two-particle clusters (containing the well-known random-phase approximation as a subset). The treatment of one-particle perturbations in single valence states is investigated in detail. As examples the oscillator strength for the 2s-2p transition in Li as well as the hyperfine structure for the two states are studied and compared to earlier work.

Interstellar absorption along the line of sight to Sigma Scorpii using Copernicus observations

From Copernicus observations of Sigma Sco, 57 individual lines of 11 elements plus the molecular species H2 and CO were identified. By using a profile-fitting technique, rather than curves of growth, it was possible to obtain column densities and Doppler b values for up to four separate components along this line of sight. Electron density in the major H I component was derived from the photoionization equilibrium of sulfur, obtaining, n(e) of about 0.3/cu cm. The neutral hydrogen density in the same component was also derived using fine-structure excitation of O I. An H II component is also present in which the electron density was n(e) about 20/cu cm. As a by-product of this analysis, previously undetermined oscillator strengths for two Mn II lines were obtained: for 1162.-017 A, f about 0.023 and for 1164.211 A, f about 0.0086.

Atoms in carbon cages as a source of interstellar diffuse lines

A model to describe the resonance absorption lines of various atoms trapped in closed carbon cages is presented. These systems may be responsible for some of the as yet unexplained diffuse interstellar bands. Model potentials for possible atom-C60 systems are obtained and used to calculate the resonance lines. The trapped atoms considered are O, N, Si, Mg, Al, Na, and S, and in all cases the resonance lines are shifted toward the red as compared to the isolated atoms. The calculated wavelengths are compared to the range of wavelengths observed for the diffuse interstellar bands, and good agreement is found for Mg and Si resonance lines. Other lines may be caused by other than resonance transitions or by trapped molecules. The oscillator strengths and the abundances are evaluated and compared with observation. Mechanisms to explain the observed band width of the lines and the existence of certain correlated pairs of lines are discussed.

Medium resolution studies of extreme ultraviolet emission from N2 by electron impact - The effect of predissociation on the emission cross section of the b 1Pi(u) state

The electron impact induced fluorescence spectrum of N2 is measured in the 102-134 nm range at a 0.05 nm spectral resolution. The spectral measurements provide the emission cross sections of the transitions of the b 1Pi(u)-X 1Sigma(+)g Birge-Hopfield I-band system. The structure and vibrational population distribution of this system are strongly affected by a configuration interaction of the valence b 1Pi(u) and Rydberg c 1Pi(u) and o 1Pi(u) states. The excitation function (0-400 eV) for the b-X (1,2) transition is measured and a modified Born approximation analytic model is applied to calculate the oscillator strength for the b 1Pi(u)-X band system. With the exception of the v-prime = 1 level, vibrational levels of the b 1Pi(u) state predissociate with a branching ratio of between 0.95 and 1.00. Predissociation of the b 1Pi(u) state contributes approximately six percent of the total dissociation cross section of N2 by electron impact at 100 eV.

Observations of CH in comets P/Brorsen-Metcalf and P/Halley

A common feature in the visual spectra of comets is the A squared delta - chi squared pi transition of CH at 4314 A (delta v = 0). This feature is very weak and is easily lost in the continuum or noise. However, the oscillator strength is very small, so even a weak feature indicates a large amount of CH. Understanding the parent of the CH in the comae of comets is very important for understanding the chemistry of comets and, thus, the early solar nebula. Potential parents for the CH are CH4 or more complex hydrocarbons, including polyoxy methanes (POMs). The ratio of CH4 to H2O is indicative of possible sites of formation of the comets. Past observations of comets have shown that the CH is present in the coma. However, because of the intrinsic weakness of the feature and the ease of photodissociating CH, the distribution of the CH in the coma has only been traced in the inner coma, where the fall-off is still 1/p, where p is the impact parameter. The first data sets tracing the distribution of CH to large distances from the nucleus in two comets is presented. Some preliminary models are presented pertaining to the parent of the CH.

Electron impact excitation of coronene

A preliminary study of the electron-impact excitation of thermally evaporated coronene at 550 C was carried out using electron-energy-loss spectroscopy. Measurements of the energy-loss spectra of coronene at high (100 eV) and low (5-20 eV) impact energies are presented. One of the high-energy spectra was converted to an apparent generalized oscillator strength spectrum and compared to the photoabsorption spectrum of coronene. Observations concerning vibrational excitation of coronene by electron impact are also presented and discussed.
