CeTi 2 O 6 —A Promising Oxide for Solar Thermochemical Hydrogen Production

A large entropy of reduction is crucial in achieving materials capable of high-efficiency solar thermochemical hydrogen (STCH) production through two-step thermochemical water splitting cycles. We have recently demonstrated that the onsite electronic entropy of reduction attains an extreme value of 4.26 kB at 1500 K in Ce 4+ → Ce 3+ redox reactions, which explains the high performance and uniqueness of CeO 2 as an archetypal STCH material. However, ceria requires high temperatures (T > 1500 °C) to achieve a reasonable reduction extent because of its large reduction enthalpy, which is a major obstacle in practical applications. Therefore, new materials with a large entropy of reduction and lower reduction enthalpy are required. Here, we perform a systematic screening to search for Ce 4+ -based oxides which possess thermodynamics superior to CeO 2 for STCH production. We first search the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) and literature for Ce 4+ -based oxides and subsequently use density functional theory to compute their reduction enthalpies (i.e., oxygen vacancy formation energies). Here, we find that CeTi 2 O 6 with the brannerite structure is the most promising candidate for STCH because it possesses three essential characteristics of an STCH material: (i) a smaller reduction enthalpy compared to ceria yet large enough to split water, (ii) a high thermal stability, as reported experimentally, and (iii) a large entropy of reduction associated with Ce 4+ → Ce 3+ redox. Our proposed design strategy suggests that further exploration of Ce 4+ oxides for STCH production is warranted.

Influence of Calendering on the Electrochemical Performance of LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.05 Al 0.05 O 2 Cathodes in Lithium-Ion Cells

Electrode calendering is a necessary process used in industry to improve the volumetric capacity of lithium-ion batteries. However, calendering high-nickel cathodes leads to electrode particle pulverization, raising concerns of a reduced cycle life due to parasitic side reactions. We present here an investigation of the impact of calendering on the morphology and electrochemical performance of the cobalt-free layered oxide cathode LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.05 Al 0.05 O 2 (NMA-90). We find that secondary particle pulverization and fusion simultaneously occur at sufficiently high pressures. The initial surface area of the cathode is shown to increase with the degree of calendering, despite the higher likelihood of secondary particle fusion. Long-term cycling of full coin cells assembled with the NMA-90 cathode and the graphite anode indicates that cells with higher degrees of cathode calendering exhibit lower capacity fade compared to uncalendered cathodes. Hybrid pulse-power tests demonstrate that the usable capacity range of cells with calendered cathodes far exceeds those with uncalendered cells after long-term cycling. The improved capacity retention and pulse-power performance are attributed to the enhanced mechanical properties of the electrode after calendering that prevents loss of the primary particle contact during long-term cycling. As a result, we find that calendering high-nickel NMA-90 to industrially relevant densities does not have a detrimental effect on capacity fade, marking an important step toward commercial adoption.

Temperature dependence of field-response mechanisms in 0.4Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 –0.6(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3

Understanding the temperature dependence of how ferroelectric materials respond to electric fields is critical for determining how best to use these materials in applications. In this study, temperature dependent in situ x-ray diffraction is used to study how field-response mechanism Ba ( Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 ) O 3 – x ( Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 ) TiO 3 evolves with temperature. Increasing the measurement temperature was found to slightly reduce the extent of domain reversal and the magnitude of the 111 lattice strain. Instead, these results indicate that temperature predominantly impacted the angular dependence of the 002/200 lattice strain. We attribute the observed differences in 002/200 lattice strain to the flattening of the free-energy near the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase boundary, where the flattening of the energy landscape promotes a polarization rotation response during the application of electric fields at room temperature.

Anisotropic magnetic and transport properties of orthorhombic o-Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5

Abstract The crystal structure, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), heat capacity, and anisotropic magnetic and resistivity measurements are reported for Sn flux grown single crystals of orthorhombic Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 (U 2 Co 3 Si 5 -type, Ibam ). Our findings show that o -Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 hosts nearly trivalent Pr ions, as evidenced by EELS and fits to temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex magnetic ordering with a partially spin-polarized state emerges near T sp = 32 K, with a spin reconfiguration transition near T M = 15 K. Heat capacity measurements show that the phase transitions appear as broad peaks in the vicinity of T sp and T M . The magnetic entropy further reveals that crystal electric field splitting lifts the Hund’s rule degeneracy at low temperatures. Taken together, these measurements show that Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 is an environment for complex f state magnetism with potential strongly correlated electron states.

Coupling of Klein-Andreev resonant states in B⁢i 2 ⁢S⁢r 2 ⁢CaC⁢u 2 ⁢O 8+𝑥 -graphene-B⁢i 2⁢ S⁢r 2 ⁢CaC⁢u 2 ⁢O 8+𝑥 devices

Quantum devices require coherent coupling over macroscopic distances. Recently, resonances due to Klein tunneling and Andreev reflection states (KARS) have been observed in a naturally occurring p-n junction at the interface between B⁢i 2 ⁢S⁢r 2 ⁢CaC⁢u 2 ⁢O 8+𝑥 (BSCCO), a high−⁢𝑇 c superconductor (HTS), and graphene. The resonances appear as conductance oscillations with gating. Here, in this study, we show coupling between the KARS in BSCCO-graphene-BSCCO devices of varying separation (L). The coupling is evidenced by a power-law decay of resonance period as L increases from tens of nanometers to microns. These results demonstrate the long-distance coupling of KARS cavities in graphene-HTS junctions. The length dependence seen in experiments is supported by single-particle spectral functions which show KARS are coupled by transport modes in graphene. The strong coupling between KARS in BSCCO-graphene-BSCCO devices showcases the possibility of HTS-graphene junctions for quantum circuits and unconventional Josephson junctions.

Charge density wave modulation in superconducting BaPb O 3 / BaBi O 3 superlattices

The isotropic, nonmagnetic doped BaBiO 3 superconductors maintain some similarities to high-T c cuprates, while also providing a cleaner system for isolating charge density wave (CDW) physics that commonly competes with superconductivity. Artificial layered superlattices offer the possibility of engineering the interaction between superconductivity and CDW. Here we stabilize a low-temperature, fluctuating short-range CDW order by using artificially layered epitaxial (BaPbO 3 ) 3m /(BaBiO 3 ) m (m = 1-10 unit cells) superlattices that are not present in the optimally doped BaPb 0.75 Bi 0.25 O 3 alloy with the same overall chemical formula. Charge transfer from BaBiO 3 to BaPbO 3 effectively dopes the former and suppresses the long-range CDW; however, as the short-range CDW fluctuations strengthen at low temperatures charge appears to localize and superconductivity is weakened. The monolayer structural control demonstrated here provides compelling implications to access controllable, local density wave orders absent in bulk alloys and manipulate phase competition in unconventional superconductors.

Clock model interpolation and symmetry breaking in O(2) models

The $q$-state clock model is a classical spin model that corresponds to the Ising model when $q=2$ and to the $XY$ model when $q\to\infty$. The integer-$q$ clock model has been studied extensively and has been shown to have a single phase transition when $q=2$,$3$,$4$ and two phase transitions when $q>4$.We define an extended $q$-state clock model that reduces to the ordinary $q$-state clock model when $q$ is an integer and otherwise is a continuous interpolation of the clock model to noninteger $q$. We investigate this class of clock models in 2D using Monte Carlo (MC) and tensor renormalization group (TRG) methods, and we find that the model with noninteger $q$ has a crossover and a second-order phase transition. We also define an extended-$O(2)$ model (with a parameter $\gamma$) that reduces to the $XY$ model when $\gamma=0$ and to the extended $q$-state clock model when $\gamma\to\infty$, and we begin to outline the phase diagram of this model. These models with noninteger $q$ serve as a testbed to study symmetry breaking in situations corresponding to quantum simulators where experimental parameters can be tuned continuously.

Epitaxial growth of hexagonal BaNi O 3–δ thin films on SrTi O 3 (111) substrates

Transition metal oxides containing nickel species in oxidation states higher than 3+ often exhibit high catalytic activity, which makes them promising for applications as advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting and fuel cells. Here, we examine the structure and properties of BaNiO 3 (BNO) thin films, containing formally Ni 4+ , grown on SrTiO 3 (111) substrates using oxygen-plasma–assisted molecular beam epitaxy. X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements reveal that BNO films have a hexagonal structure with $c$- and $a$-axes of mixed textures showing epitaxial relationships BNO (0001) ∥ SrTiO 3 (111) and BNO (10$\overline{1}$0) ∥ SrTi O 3 (111), respectively. The formation of the $a$-axis texture is dominant due to the smaller lattice mismatch with the substrate. Here, density functional theory calculations confirm that the hexagonal BNO film with the $a$-axis texture is energetically more favorable than the competing $c$-axis texture. Detailed spectroscopy data analysis indicates that hexagonal BNO films contain mixtures of Ni 2+ , Ni 3+ , and Ni 4+ species, with Ni 4+ being dominant. Our study provides insights into stabilizing Ni 4+ in complex oxides, which is important for further exploration of the potential of materials containing Ni 4+ .

Validation of the Sentinel-5 Precursor TROPOMI cloud data with Cloudnet, Aura OMI O 2 –O 2 , MODIS, and Suomi-NPP VIIRS

Accurate knowledge of cloud properties is essential to the measurement of atmospheric composition from space. In this work we assess the quality of the cloud data from three Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) TROPOMI cloud products: (i) S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CAL (Optical Cloud Recognition Algorithm/Retrieval of Cloud Information using Neural Networks;Clouds-As-Layers), (ii) S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CRB (Clouds-as-Reflecting Boundaries), and (iii) S5P FRESCO-S (Fast Retrieval Scheme for Clouds from Oxygen absorption bands – Sentinel). Target properties of this work are cloud-top height and cloud optical thickness (OCRA/ROCINN_CAL), cloud height (OCRA/ROCINN_CRB and FRESCO-S), and radiometric cloud fraction (all three algorithms). The analysis combines (i) the examination of cloud maps for artificial geographical patterns, (ii) the comparison to other satellite cloud data (MODIS, NPP-VIIRS, and OMI O2–O2), and (iii) ground-based validation with respect to correlative observations (30 April 2018 to 27 February 2020) from the Cloudnet network of ceilometers, lidars, and radars. Zonal mean latitudinal variation of S5P cloud properties is similar to that of other satellite data. S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CAL agrees well with NPP VIIRS cloud-top height and cloud optical thickness and with Cloudnet cloud-top height, especially for the low (mostly liquid) clouds. For the high clouds, S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CAL cloud-top height is below the cloud-top height of VIIRS and of Cloudnet, while its cloud optical thickness is higher than that of VIIRS. S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CRB and S5P FRESCO cloud height are well below the Cloudnet cloud mean height for the low clouds but match on average better with the Cloudnet cloud mean height for the higher clouds. As opposed to S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CRB and S5P FRESCO, S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CAL is well able to match the lowest CTH mode of the Cloudnet observations. Peculiar geographical patterns are identified in the cloud products and will be mitigated in future releases of the cloud data products.
