Growth and characterization of large YBa2Cu3O(7-x) single crystals

Centimeter-sized crystal plates of YBa2Cu3O(7-x) have been obtained using a bulk composition and method described by Schneemeyer at al. (1987) modified for growth in a pure oxygen atmosphere. A porous MgO crucible and long soak time promote large crystals. Mg was not detectable in the crystals. Electron microbeam analysis using a 60 A monochromator crystal for the oxygen determination gave the composition Y(1.05)Ba(2.02)Cu(2.94)O(6.52 + or - 0.06). As-grown crystals from the melt surface exhibit a fairly sharp Tc with zero resistance at 80 K, and show complex twinning and crack patterns. Optical micrographs of a lightly polished surface normal to the c-axis of a 3-mm crystal delineate twinning and fine scale microcracking; this crystal surface now has a zero resistance at 68 K. Microhardness measurements and microfracture observations indicate intrinsic properties that may inhibit or impede large scale manufacture of electronic ceramics.

Optical experiments on thermophoretically augmented submicron particle deposition from 'dusty' high temperature gas flows

A real-time laser reflectivity method and Pt ribbon targets are used to obtain experimental data on the initial deposition rate of MgO(s) particles of approximately 700 nm diameter from otherwise clean combustion products as a function of target temperature (about 950-1450 K) and mainstream gas temperature (about 1500-1600 K). These preliminary data are used to demonstrate the dominant role of thermophoresis (particle drift down a temperature gradient) and to assess the utility of recently developed theoretical methods for predicting and correlating the temperature dependence of thermophoretically augmented convective-diffusion 'dust' deposition rates from flowing hot gases.

Mantle-derived fluids in diamond micro-inclusions

Microinclusions in diamonds from Zaire and Botswana differ in composition from the more common large inclusions of the peridotitic or eclogitic assemblages. These sub-micrometer inclusions resemble potassic magmas in their composition, but are enriched in H2O, CO2(3-), and K2O and depleted in MgO. This composition represents a volatile-rich fluid or melt from the upper mantle, which was trapped in the diamonds as they grew.

Highly oriented Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 thin films by pulsed laser evaporation

Superconducting thin films on MgO (100) substrates with nearly pure Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (2:2:2:3) phase using pulsed laser evaporation and postannealing have been fabricated. The films had c axes perpendicular to the substrates. Superconducting films with onset temperatures of 125 K and zero resistance at 110 K were obtained. X-ray microprobe fluorescence measurements indicate that a typical composition of films is Tl(0.66)Ba(1.77)Ca(1.46)Cu3O(x) which is low in Tl compared to that expected for the 2:2:2:3 phase. A typical grain size is greater than 10 microns revealed by scanning electron microscopy.

OPO performance with a long pulse length, single frequency Nd:YAG laser pump

With the advent of new nonlinear materials and single-frequency pump sources, there is renewed interest in optical parametric oscillators (OPOs). A single-mode diode-laser-pumped monolithic Nd:YAG nonplanar ring laser that is both amplified and frequency doubled is used to pump a monolithic MgO:LiNbO3 pulsed singly resonant OPO. The OPO signal output was temperature tuned from 834 to 958 nm, producing an idler tuning from 1.47 to 1.2 microns. Efforts toward a CW all-solid-state doubly resonant OPO are also described.

Metasomatic products of the lunar magma ocean - The role of KREEP dissemination

The 'urKREEP' hypothesis of Warren and Wasson (1979) is extended by defining KREEP in terms of specific (i.e., constrained) lunar components. It is shown that, the presilicate liquid immiscibility (pre-SLI) composition can be obtained by recombining experimental data on KREEP basalt components, or by calculating from liquid-liquid Kd's. Both calculated urKREEP compositions were lower in MgO and Al2O3 and higher in FeO and P2O5 than reported low- and high-K KREEP compositions. The calculated REE abundances were higher and the REE profiles were slightly more LREE-enriched than the previously reported KREEP compositions.

Chemical and isotopic constraints on the petrogenesis of the large mare basalt clast in breccia 15459

Results are presented that demonstrate that the large mare basalt clast in Apollo 15 breccia 15459 may represent one or more independent magma types. The complex nonequilibrium pyroxene and plagioclase compositions and relatively abundant mesostasis suggest that the 15459 clast is not a slowly cooled crystal cumulate. The addition of about 40 percent olivine to an olivine-normative basalt parental magma is found to be necessary to explain the high MgO abundances of picritic basalts by the accumulation of olivine in the magma. The present clast has a slightly younger age and a slightly higher Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio than most Apollo 15 basalts.

Thermal infrared (2.5-13.5-micron) spectroscopic remote sensing of igneous rock types on particulate planetary surfaces

The compositional significance of outstanding spectral features in the reflectance spectra of particulate igneous rocks was investigated by analyzing directional reflectance spectra, obtained with an FTIR spectrophotometer at 2.17-13.5 microns, of a suite of well-characterized igneous rocks ground to fine particle size. It was found that, using spectral features associated with the principal Christiansen frequency and with a region of relative transparency between the Si-O stretching and bending bands, it is possible to identify general rock type using the Walter and Salisbury (1989) SCFM chemical index, SCFM, defined as SCFM = SiO2/(SiO2 + CaO + FeO + MgO). It is emphasized, however, that the appearance and the wavelength of these features may be affected by environmental factors.

Spectral characterization of igneous rocks in the 8- to 12-micron region

This paper investigates the crystal-chemistry basis for the variation in spectral behavior of ingneous rocks, with the purpose of developing relationships useful for applications in the lithologic characterization of terrestrial and extraterrestrial surfaces. A new parameter is proposed for characterizing general rock and mineral type. The parameter, SCFM, defined as the ratio SiO2/(SiO2 + CaO + FeO + MgO), reflects the degree of depolymerization of the silica tetrahedra in both fine-grained and coarse-grained igneous rocks, and is a good descriptor of the composition of these rocks. Using spectra obtained in the laboratory on coarse-particulate mineral and solid-rock samples, the SCFM parameter was used to assess the effects of variations in the rock composition on the location, number, and width of spectral bands. A regression analysis of bands varying in width from 0.2 micron to 1.4 microns versus the SCFM value resulted in correlation coefficients ranging from 0.88 to 0.97.

Volatile fractionation and tektite source material

The arguments used by Love and Woronow (1988) to assess the role played in the origin of bediasites by extensive volatile fractionation are critically examined. Using the ratios of 'refractory' oxides, CaO, Al2O3, and MgO, to the 'volatile' oxides, Na2O and K2O, these authors concluded that vapor fractionation did not play a significant role. In this paper, experimental evidence is presented that shows that the assumption of volatility for the alkali elements (as least with respect to silica) to be not valid under the conditions under which tektites formed. It is shown that the results of vapor fractionation in experiments on glasses of tektite composition are approximately parallel the trends seen in bediasite analysis.

Generating Second Harmonics In Nonlinear Resonant Cavities

Single-axial-mode lasers pump very-low-loss doubling crystals. Important advance in making resonant generation of second harmonics possible for diode-laser-pumped solid-state lasers is recent development of monolithic nonplanar ring geometries in neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) lasers that produce frequency-stable single-mode outputs. Other advance is development of high-quality MgO:LiNbO3 as electro-optically nonlinear material. Series of experiments devised to improve doubling efficiency of low-power lasers, and particularly of diode-laser-pumped continuous-wave Nd:YAG lasers.

Thermodynamic properties of some metal oxide-zirconia systems

Metal oxide-zirconia systems are a potential class of materials for use as structural materials at temperatures above 1900 K. These materials must have no destructive phase changes and low vapor pressures. Both alkaline earth oxide (MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO)-zirconia and some rare earth oxide (Y2O3, Sc2O3, La2O3, CeO2, Sm2O3, Gd2O3, Yb2O3, Dy2O3, Ho2O3, and Er2O3)-zirconia system are examined. For each system, the phase diagram is discussed and the vapor pressure for each vapor species is calculated via a free energy minimization procedure. The available thermodynamic literature on each system is also surveyed. Some of the systems look promising for high temperature structural materials.

Thermodynamic analysis of chemical stability of ceramic materials in hydrogen-containing atmospheres at high temperatures

The chemical stability of several ceramic materials in hydrogen-containing environments was analyzed with thermodynamic considerations in mind. Equilibrium calculations were made as a function of temperature, moisture content, and total system pressure. The following ceramic materials were considered in this study: SiC, Si3N4, SiO2, Al2O3, mullite, ZrO2, Y2O3, CaO, MgO, BeO, TiB2, TiC, HfC, and ZrC. On the basis of purely thermodynamic arguments, upper temperature limits are suggested for each material for long-term use in H2-containing atmospheres.

Edge geometry superconducting tunnel junctions utilizing an NbN/MgO/NbN thin film structure

An edge defined geometry is used to produce very small area tunnel junctions in a structure with niobium nitride superconducting electrodes and a magnesium oxide tunnel barrier. The incorporation of an MgO tunnel barrier with two NbN electrodes results in improved current-voltage characteristics, and may lead to better junction noise characteristics. The NbN electrodes are preferably sputter-deposited, with the first NbN electrode deposited on an insulating substrate maintained at about 250 to 500 C for improved quality of the electrode.

Review and statistical analysis of the ultrasonic velocity method for estimating the porosity fraction in polycrystalline materials

A review and statistical analysis of the ultrasonic velocity method for estimating the porosity fraction in polycrystalline materials is presented. Initially, a semi-empirical model is developed showing the origin of the linear relationship between ultrasonic velocity and porosity fraction. Then, from a compilation of data produced by many researchers, scatter plots of velocity versus percent porosity data are shown for Al2O3, MgO, porcelain-based ceramics, PZT, SiC, Si3N4, steel, tungsten, UO2,(U0.30Pu0.70)C, and YBa2Cu3O(7-x). Linear regression analysis produced predicted slope, intercept, correlation coefficient, level of significance, and confidence interval statistics for the data. Velocity values predicted from regression analysis for fully-dense materials are in good agreement with those calculated from elastic properties.

Preparation and characteristics of superconducting cuprate thin films: Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 and substituted Bi-system

Characteristics of the electron-doped-type Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 systems and substituted Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy system were systematically studied using the high quality thin-film samples. The Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO4 thin films with various Ce concentrations, x, were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering on SrTiO3 heated at around 500 C. After subsequent annealing at 1100 C in air, the films showed the c-axis orientation normal to the substrates. By means of the reducing treatment (annealing in a vacuum), superconductivity was induced for the films with 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. The superconductivity and transport properties of the films were strongly affected by the reducing treatment. The x = 0.15 film exhibited a sharp superconducting transition with zero resistivity at 22 K, in consistent with the diamagnetic properties. The resistivity of the films was fairly low with metallic characteristics, and the sight of the Hall coefficient was negative in the normal state. On the other hand, the normal-state optical measurements showed that the undoped Nd2CuO4 is a semiconductor with a charge transfer gap of 1.3 eV, and that, when Ce ions were doped, a plasma reflection due to the free-carriers came to be seen with the plasma frequency of 1.07 eV for 0.14 is less than or equal to x is less than or equal to 0.18. Moreover, x ray photoemission study revealed that the Cu valence of the film decreased for 2(+) for x = 0 to 1(+) for x = 0.15. These physical properties are in contrast with those of hole-doped-type cuprate superconductors. Bi2(Sr,Ln)3Cu2Oy thin films were also prepared on MgO substrates heated at 600 to 700 C by similar methods. It was found that the growth conditions for Bi-systems with two CuO2 planes were different for each composition and species of lanthanoid in the films. Moreover, preparation of Bi-system with three CuO2 planes was very difficult when lanthanoid atoms were doped in the system. Their electric transport properties and x ray photoemission spectroscopy were investigated. Carrier concentration and Cu valence were discussed with regard to the superconductivity.

Electron beam flash evaporation for YBaCuO and BiCaSrCuO thin films

An electron beam flash evaporation technique is described which reproduces the stoichiometry of superconducting YBa(2)Cu(3)O(x) (123), Bi(2)CaSr(2)Cu(2)O(y) (2122), and Bi(2)Ca(2)Sr(2)Cu(3)O(z) (2223) source powders. Films of each material deposited with this technique exhibit zero resistance temperatures of 78 K or above when furnace annealed; 75 K zero temperatures are obtained for 123 films in situ annealed with atomic oxygen at 775 C. Transport critical current densities are 10,000 A/sq cm in 25-micron stripes patterned from 123 films, and 60,000 A/sq cm in 1-mm stripes of 2122 and 2223 films using a 1-microV/mm measurement criteria. Typical normal state resistivities are 700 micro-ohm cm for 2122 and 2223 films and 5 micro-ohm cm for 123 films. The 2122 films are highly textured with the c axis normal to the substrate. All results are for films deposited on MgO.
