Availability and mean time between failures of redundant systems with random maintenance of subsystems

It is shown how the availability and MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) of a redundant system with subsystems maintenanced at the points of so-called stationary renewal processes can be determined from the distributions of the intervals between maintenance actions and of the failure-free operating intervals of the subsystems. The results make it possible, for example, to determine the frequency and duration of hidden failure states in computers which are incidentally corrected during the repair of observed failures.

Reliability based fatigue design and maintenance procedures

A stochastic model has been developed to describe a probability for fatigue process by assuming a varying hazard rate. This stochastic model can be used to obtain the desired probability of a crack of certain length at a given location after a certain number of cycles or time. Quantitative estimation of the developed model was also discussed. Application of the model to develop a procedure for reliability-based cost-effective fail-safe structural design is presented. This design procedure includes the reliability improvement due to inspection and repair. Methods of obtaining optimum inspection and maintenance schemes are treated.

Maintenance cost study of rotary wing aircraft

The feasibility was studied of predicting rotary wing operation maintenance costs by using several aircraft design factors for the aircraft dynamic systems. The dynamic systems considered were engines, drives and transmissions, rotors, and flight controls. Multiple regression analysis was used to correlate aircraft design and operational factors with manhours per flight hour, and equations for each dynamic system were developed. Results of labor predictions using the equations compare favorably with actual values.

A maintenance model for k-out-of-n subsystems aboard a fleet of advanced commercial aircraft

Proposed highly reliable fault-tolerant reconfigurable digital control systems for a future generation of commercial aircraft consist of several k-out-of-n subsystems. Each of these flight-critical subsystems will consist of n identical components, k of which must be functioning properly in order for the aircraft to be dispatched. Failed components are recoverable; they are repaired in a shop. Spares are inventoried at a main base where they may be substituted for failed components on planes during layovers. Penalties are assessed when failure of a k-out-of-n subsystem causes a dispatch cancellation or delay. A maintenance model for a fleet of aircraft with such control systems is presented. The goals are to demonstrate economic feasibility and to optimize.

Maintenance of quasi-stationary waves in a 2-level quasi-geostrophic spectral model with topography

The maintenance of the quasi-stationary waves obtained through numerically integrating a 2-level quasi-geostrophic spectral model on a beta-plane is investigated. An idealized topography which has only wavenumber n in the zonal direction and the first mode in the meridional direction is used to force the quasi-stationary waves. It is shown that the topographical forcing is not necessarily the mechanism for maintaining the quasi-stationary waves.

Preliminary calculations concerning the maintenance of the zonal mean ozone distribution in the Northern Hemisphere

Results from a three-dimensional photochemical-dynamical model of ozone are presented and a qualitative description of the maintenance of the ozone distribution and its seasonal variations below 1 mb is given. The transition between photochemical and transport control of the ozone distribution is emphasized. Between 1 and 10 mb, transport by the eddies seems to play only a minor role at mid-latitudes in producing the observed ozone distribution despite the zero correlation between ozone and temperature which occurs in that region. In the lower stratosphere, mean and eddy contributions to ozone change generally strongly offset one another. The buildup and decay of the springtime ozone maximum is discussed. Emphasis is given to the mechanism of ozone transport by the mid-latitude eddies, which play an important role in the springtime accumulation of ozone.

Autonomous spacecraft maintenance study group

A plan to incorporate autonomous spacecraft maintenance (ASM) capabilities into Air Force spacecraft by 1989 is outlined. It includes the successful operation of the spacecraft without ground operator intervention for extended periods of time. Mechanisms, along with a fault tolerant data processing system (including a nonvolatile backup memory) and an autonomous navigation capability, are needed to replace the routine servicing that is presently performed by the ground system. The state of the art fault handling capabilities of various spacecraft and computers are described, and a set conceptual design requirements needed to achieve ASM is established. Implementations for near term technology development needed for an ASM proof of concept demonstration by 1985, and a research agenda addressing long range academic research for an advanced ASM system for 1990s are established.

Networks consolidation program: Maintenance and Operations (M&O) staffing estimates

The Mark IV-A consolidate deep space and high elliptical Earth orbiter (HEEO) missions tracking and implements centralized control and monitoring at the deep space communications complexes (DSCC). One of the objectives of the network design is to reduce maintenance and operations (M&O) costs. To determine if the system design meets this objective an M&O staffing model for Goldstone was developed which was used to estimate the staffing levels required to support the Mark IV-A configuration. The study was performed for the Goldstone complex and the program office translated these estimates for the overseas complexes to derive the network estimates.

On the maintenance of the Venus nightside ionosphere - Electron precipitation and plasma transport

The relative contributions of electron precipitation and transport of dayside plasma to the maintenance of the Venus nightside ionosphere during the long Venusian night are investigated based on simultaneous Pioneer Venus Orbiter Retarding Potential Analyzer measurements of suprathermal electron fluxes and plasma densities. In about 20 orbits, the nightside integral electron flux of electrons with energies between 5 and 45 eV is observed to be relatively constant in time and altitude, while plasma density is observed to vary by a factor of 10 or more with no correlation with the electron flux. Ionization rates and ion density height profiles are computed for O(+) and O2(+) as a function of magnetic dip angle based on a typical electron spectrum, or a downward flux of O(+) ions. Comparison of the computed profiles with the measured median O(+) and O2(+) density profiles reveals that the measured profiles can only be reproduced by a downward flux of O(+) equal to about 10 to the 8th/sq cm per sec; suprathermal electron energy distributions produce O2(+) and O(+) levels only about half and one tenth those usually observed, respectively. It is thus concluded that transport of O(+) ions from the dayside Venus ionosphere is responsible for approximately 75% of the typical nightside ionization, with variations in O(+) transport mechanism responsible for most of the observed nightside density variations. The remaining ionization is attributed to suprathermal electrons, which contribute principally to the O2(+) peak.

Space Telescope - Design for orbital maintenance

Maintenance and repair of the Shuttle launched Space Telescope (ST) are examined, noting that except for the basic structure, mirrors, cables, and several noncritical items, the entire ST is replaceable or reparable on-orbit. EVA tasks have been designed to avoid contamination, and to provide a reduction in Orbital Replacement Units, a minimal number of doors and openings, and minimized structural weight associated with free-volume. All removable components have been provided with tool-compatible fittings and releases, and standardization of parts has been compromised with considerations of interface with crew handling. Replacement and repair equipment will be carried as an added parcel on Shuttle flights and are not part of the standard Shuttle components. The necessity of designing for crew-aid at ST workstations is suggested to provide sound data for the design of other space-based equipment.

Maintenance estimation methodology

A Rayleigh curve method of projection combined with a modified matrix method to forecast maintenance needs and required staffing levels is used. The curves generated by both methods are differenced to ascertain how much new work can be performed given the staffing live. Actual project data are compared to the projection to validate or modify the process.
