Quantum stabilization of unexpected ordered phases on the honeycomb lattice

In this work, I discuss and showcase the utility of the method called minimally-augmented spin-wave theory (MAGSWT) as a relatively simple semi-analytical approach to the phase diagrams of quantum magnets. It complements numerical methods by providing physical insight into which states are competitive and by yielding approximate phase boundaries that agree well with much more numerically intensive calculations. This approach enabled me to construct the faithful phase diagrams of two paradigmatic honeycomb-lattice models in the quantum S=1/2 limit, the J 1 –J 3 FM-AF and J 1 –J 2 AF models, for the collinear quantum phases that replace or extend the classical ones. The results are in good qualitative and semi-quantitative agreement with state-of-the-art numerical studies for these models, correctly capturing the emergence of unexpected quantum phases and the suppression of classically favored spiral orders by quantum fluctuations. This study provides a much-needed important guidance to the ongoing theoretical and experimental searches of the unconventional quantum states. This work will be of significant and timely interest to both theorists and experimentalists in the field of quantum magnetism, broadly defined.

Lattice site–dependent metal leaching in perovskites toward a honeycomb-like water oxidation catalyst

Metal leaching during water oxidation has been typically observed in conjunction with surface reconstruction on perovskite oxide catalysts, but the role of metal leaching at each geometric site has not been distinguished. Here, we manipulate the occurrence and process of surface reconstruction in two model ABO 3 perovskites, i.e., SrSc 0.5 Ir 0.5 O 3 and SrCo 0.5 Ir 0.5 O 3 , which allow us to evaluate the structure and activity evolution step by step. The occurrence and order of leaching of Sr (A-site) and Sc/Co (B-site) were controlled by tailoring the thermodynamic stability of B-site. Sr leaching from A-site mainly generates more electrochemical surface area for the reaction, and additional leaching of Sc/Co from B-site triggers the formation of a honeycomb-like IrO x H y phase with a notable increase in intrinsic activity. A thorough surface reconstruction with dual-site metal leaching induces an activity improvement by approximately two orders of magnitude, which makes the reconstructed SrCo 0.5 Ir 0.5 O 3 among the best for water oxidation in acid.

Flexible honeycomb structure can bend to fit compound curves

For flexibility in forming a curved surface, a honeycomb configuration using multiple pleats has proved superior to the usual core structures. The partial pleats formed in individual cell walls permit movements to and from the central axis without tearing.

Apparatus measures thermal conductivity of honeycomb-core panels

Overall thermal conductivity of honeycomb-core panels at elevated temperatures is measured by an apparatus with a heater assembly and a calibrated heat-rate transducer. The apparatus has space between the heater and transducer for insertion of a test panel and insulation.

Adjustable knife cuts honeycomb material to specified depth

Calibrated, adjustable knife cuts aluminum honeycomb or other soft materials to a desired depth. The frame of the device accommodates standard commercial blades. Since the blade is always visible to the operator, the device can be used on any straight or irregular layout line.

Hollow needle used to cut metal honeycomb structures

Hollow needle tool cuts metal honeycomb structures without damaging adjacent material. The hollow needle combines an electrostatic discharge and a stream of oxygen at a common point to effect rapid, accurate metal cutting. The tool design can be varied to use the hollow needle principle for cutting a variety of shapes.

Ultrasonic quality inspection of bonded honeycomb assemblies is automated

Inspection system for bonded honeycomb assemblies is accurate, fast, and automated. The ultrasonic system consists of inner and outer transducer positioning assemblies with suitable motor controls, a centerless turntable assembly, water squirter assemblies, and an inspection program completely encoded on tape suitable for use on a high speed computer.

Detection of entrapped moisture in honeycomb sandwich structures

Thermal neutron moisture detection system detects entrapped moisture in intercellular areas of bonded honeycomb sandwich structures. A radium/beryllium fast neutron source bombards a specimen. The emitted thermal neutrons from the target nucleus are detected and counted by a boron trifluoride thermal neutron detector.

Heavy-gage bonded honeycomb sandwich as primary load-bearing structure

Heavy-gage bonded honeycomb sandwich is used as a primary load-bearing structural material in large-diameter boosters. Theoretical investigations based on a small deflection theory for prediction of stress fields and buckling loads, and structural testing were made. This structure is a potential weight saver for compression load-critical components.

Repair of honeycomb panels with welded breakaway studs

Damaged metallic honeycomb panels can be repaired by drilling holes and welding breakaway studs to both facing sheets. Minimal heat required for welding reduces distortion of highly stressed panels. Repairs can be made without the use of doublers and with greater strength when doublers are used.
