Measurement of the energy asymmetry in $t\bar{t} j$ production at 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment and interpretation in the SMEFT framework

A measurement of the energy asymmetry in jet-associated top-quark pair production is presented using 139fb -1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =13TeV. The observable measures the different probability of top and antitop quarks to have the higher energy as a function of the jet scattering angle with respect to the beam axis. The energy asymmetry is measured in the semileptonic $t\bar{t}$ decay channel, and the hadronically decaying top quark must have transverse momentum above 350GeV. The results are corrected for detector effects to particle level in three bins of the scattering angle of the associated jet. The measurement agrees with the SM prediction at next-to-leading-order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics in all three bins. In the bin with the largest expected asymmetry, where the jet is emitted perpendicular to the beam, the energy asymmetry is measured to be -0.043 ± 0.020, in agreement with the SM prediction of -0.037 ± 0.003. Interpreting this result in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), it is shown that the energy asymmetry is sensitive to the top-quark chirality in four-quark operators and is therefore a valuable new observable in global SMEFT fits.

Time Alignment of the CMS Hadron Calorimeter

The Hadron Calorimeter (HCAL) in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) was recently upgraded for Run 3 (2022-2025) to introduce depth segmentation and online timing measurements. With increased segmentation and readout channels, the HCAL provides new timing capabilities for jets and hadronic tau decays with nearly 4π coverage and sensitivity to highly displaced decays within the calorimeter volume. Recent HCAL timing scans provide a valuable look at artificially delayed jets in collision data and are crucial to improving the detector’s performance. Online timing is utilized for detector alignment based on positioning the pulse rising edge, achieving an alignment accuracy of 0.5 ns, considerably higher than previous energy-weighting based approaches. Using precision arrival time measurements, significant advances have been made in understanding the propagation of hadronic showers throughout the calorimeter.

${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ polarimetry using the dominant hadronic mode

The polarimeter vector field for multibody decays of a spin-half baryon is intro duced as a generalisation of the baryon asymmetry parameters. Using a recent amplitude analysis of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → $pK^-π^+$ decay performed at the LHCb experiment, we compute the distribution of the kinematic-dependent polarimeter vector for this process in the space of Mandelstam variables to express the polarised decay rate in a model-agnostic form. The obtained representation can facilitate polarisation measurements of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ baryon and eases inclusion of the ${\Lambda}_c^{+}$ → $pK^-π^+$ decay mode in hadronic amplitude analyses.

Observation of a threshold cusp at the Λ η threshold in the pK - mass spectrum with Λ$^{+}_{c}$ → pK - π + decays

We observe a narrow peaking structure in the pK - invariant-mass spectrum near the Λη threshold. The peak is clearly seen in 1.5 million events of Λ$^{+}_{c}$ → pK - π + decay using the 980 fb -1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e - collider. We try two approaches to explain this structure: as a new resonance and as a cusp at the Λη threshold. The best fit is obtained with a coherent sum of a Flatte function and a constant background amplitude with the reduced X 2 of 257/243 (p = 0.25), while the fits to Breit-Wigner functions are unfavored by more than 7σ. The best fit explains the structure as a cusp at the Λη threshold, and the obtained parameters are consistent with the known properties of Λ(1670). The observation gives the first identification of a threshold cusp in hadrons from the spectrum shape.
