Cyber Threat Assessment Methodology for Autonomous and Remote Operations for Advanced Reactors (Conference Presentation)

The next generation of Advanced Reactors include planned capabilities for both Autonomous (operating without human interaction for a set period-of-time) and Remote (operating with human interaction from a separate physical location) Operations. Existing Nuclear Reactor architectures include a set of safety and security constraints tightly coupled with personnel policies and procedures. As Advanced Reactors are fielded with these new Autonomous and Remote operational capabilities, the architectures and associated infrastructure services and components will perceivably expand the overall attack surface and risk calculations with regards to safe and secure operations. This paper is part of an FY21 work program focused on ensuring Advanced Reactor designs are informed with threat-based guidance on design and operation of Secure Architectures with a specific focus on the deployment of Autonomous Systems in support of Advanced Reactor Operations. The next phase of this research program is to complement produce a methodology for assessment of the cyber threat against these architectures as well as a catalogue of Use Cases to support the Advanced Reactor community in their implementation of Autonomous and Remote Operations.

M3 milestone: Advanced contact 2021

This report describes advanced contact approaches and implementations in FY21 for use in emerging reactors with geometries that differ from LWR/EBR-II cylindrical fuel. Contact remains a challenging and crucially important component of our modeling toolkit. While significant improvements have been made through mortar and automatic differentiation, we explored advanced approaches (i.e., dual mortar) that yields better conditioned systems and will improve the robustness and performance of BISON contact problems. This effort is relevant to emerging reactor types, such as micro reactors and the corresponding complex and numerous contact surfaces. In this report, improvements of the mortar-based contact formulation are described. Benchmark problems and BISON assessment cases are included to demonstrate the improvements and advantages that are brought by the recent capability. Remaining issues are discussed and corresponding development plans are outlined.

2.3.4.501 - Synthesis and Analysis of Performance-Advantaged Bioproducts

This project focuses on the synthesis and analysis of performance-advantaged bioproducts (PABPs). We have established collaborations with other BETO-funded projects and academic and industrial collaborators to source new molecules that have promising manufacturing pathways and that could be serve as performance-advantaged biochemicals or biopolymers. We conduct synthesis and characterization of biochemicals and biopolymers alongside techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment to estimate their cost and environmental impacts relative to incumbent materials. As part of the project, Profs. Linda Broadbelt and Brent Shanks are developing computational pathway prediction tools to identify optimal production pathways for bio-based compounds via biological and chemo-catalytic transformations. When coupled to the polyID tool from the Inverse Design project, these tools will ultimately enable a narrowing of design space for PABPs. From FY21-FY23, we described a framework for benchmarking PAPBs, estimated the energy and GHG emissions for commodity organic chemicals, developed performance-advantaged nylons and polyesters from beta-ketoadipic acid, and produced lignin-based plasticizers. We have shown that aromatic amines can be used in performance thermosets and that polyhydroxyalkanoates with crosslinked side chains can exhibit rubber-like properties, along with repair and degradability. We are working actively with industry partners on scale-up and validation of multiple PABPs.

BOTTLE 1 - Introduction and BOTTLE Overview

The Bio-Optimized Technologies to keep Thermoplastics out of Landfills and the Environment (BOTTLE) Consortium aims to develop robust processes to upcycle existing waste plastics and to develop new plastics that are recyclable-by-design, both in direct alignment with DOE's Strategy for Plastics Innovation. We accomplish our work in the BOTTLE Consortium through an organizational framework that includes three primary research tasks, Deconstruction, Upcycling, and Redesign, which are supported by three cross-cutting tasks, Analysis, Characterization, and Modeling, BOTTLE also has tasks focused on Industry Engagement and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This presentation will review the approach and management structure of BOTTLE, the importance of analysis-guided research, and the key metrics for carbon, economic, energy, and greenhouse gas emissions. In the FY21-FY23 period, BOTTLE has drafted and enacted a comprehensive DEI plan, assembled a world-class Technical Advisory Board (TAB) to provide constructive feedback on our performance, had our first in-person all-hands meeting in summer 2022, and on-boarded and off-boarded research activities based on active project management and analysis. From an impact perspective, BOTTLE researchers have published over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts (many in leading journals), submitted >30 patent applications, and initiated 6 funds-in industry partnerships.

BOTTLE 7 - Industry Projects & Engagement

One of BOTTLE's primary goals is to work with industry to catalyze new technologies towards our overall vision and mission using a centralized industry engagement plan which aims to 1) solve real-world problems in plastics upcycling via targeted, company-funded projects; 2) promote industrial engagement via streamlined access to BOTTLE partners and technologies; and 3) collaborate with companies to scale and deploy BOTTLE technologies into the economy. Our approach follows a 5-stage model: prospecting, initial engagement, knowledge sharing, proposal and contracting, and opportunity won. Since FY21, BOTTLE has onboarded a full-time Chief Technology Officer to spearhead industry engagement and lead industrially-funded research projects. To date, BOTTLE has engaged with >150 companies, executed 6 industrial funds-in CRADAs, completed 2 industry projects successfully, extended 2 CRADAs with follow-on funds, and submitted over 30 patent applications. Industry projects span the Deconstruction, Upcycling, and Redesign tasks, harness the capabilities of the cross-cutting tasks, and take advantage of the broad IP portfolio developed through DOE funding. BOTTLE partners have an inventory of innovations that can inform the design of industry-specific collaborative projects with the highest probability of producing novel IP. Engaging with a diverse set of companies has also directly informed our R&D portfolio towards maximizing impact and utility of BOTTLE innovations.

Waste-to-Energy Technical Assistance for Local Governments

The goal of this project is to mobilize data, information, and knowledge generated about organic waste streams to local governments and support their decision-making. It builds on previous work related to wet organic waste resources (food waste, sludge, manure, waste fats and oils). The project provides an improved understanding of local waste challenges and priorities to inform BETO's R&D strategies and decision-making. It also supports local governments' goals and plans related to sustainable waste management, enables energy and/or resource recovery projects development at municipal level, and facilitates public-private partnerships. A key challenge is associated with more activities requested by entities than program allows which is mitigated by prioritization by requesting agency. All FY21 and FY22 TA requests have been completed. Major accomplishments include: 1). 34 requests managed in the past two years, 2) Distilled key challenges faced by communities. Key outcomes include strong community participation since inception of the program, dedicated program web site, deliverables tailored to communities' needs, and distribution materials (e.g., fact sheets, brochures) for a broader audience.
