Revealing uncommon transport in the previously unascertained very low cation clathrate-I Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35

In this study, high occupancy of cation sites is typical for clathrate-I compositions allowing limited tunability of the electrical properties beyond doping and elemental substitution. Herein, we report on the structure and electrical transport of single-crystal Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35 , the sole example of a very low (25%) cation concentration clathrate-I material with atypical transport directly attributable to the structure and stoichiometry.

Structural and thermal properties of Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35

Clathrates have been reported to form in a variety of different structure types; however, inorganic clathrate-I materials with a low-cation concentration have yet to be investigated. Furthermore, tin-based compositions have been much less investigated as compared to silicon or germanium analogs. We report the temperature-dependent structural and thermal properties of single-crystal Eu 2 Ga 11 Sn 35 revealing the effect of structure and composition on the thermal properties of this low-cation clathrate-I material. Specifically, low-temperature heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and synchrotron single-crystal x-ray diffraction reveal a departure from Debye-like behavior, a glass-like phonon mean-free path for this crystalline material, and a relatively large Grüneisen parameter due to the dominance of low-frequency Einstein modes. In conclusion, our analyses indicate thermal properties that are a direct result of the structure and composition of this clathrate-I material.

Complex magnetic ordering in EuAl 4 –A 151 Eu Mössbauer study

151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy has been used to investigate the behaviour of EuAl 4 through the four magnetic transitions that occur below 16 K. We find clear evidence for the first transition (T N1 , the onset of order) where an incommensurate modulated magnetic structure appears, and the third (T N3 ) where the modulation disappears at the tetragonal → orthorhombic structural transition. We see no changes at the lowest transition (T N4 ) but find that the modulation amplitude passes through a maximum at T N2 . Data on the isostructural but magnetically simpler EuGa 4 are also presented for comparison.

151 Eu Mössbauer study of magnetic ordering in flux-grown ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic forms of EuCd 2 As 2

EuCd 2 As 2 is a remarkably complex magnetic semimetal that may behave as a topological insulator or host two pairs of Weyl points, depending on the growth conditions and the final magnetic state. Both antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) forms have been grown, and we show here, using 151 Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy, that the differences between the AFM and FM forms extend well beyond their ground state magnetic structures. Whereas the AFM form undergoes a conventional AFM → paramagnetic transition on warming, the FM form passes through a complex incommensurate modulated state before becoming paramagnetic.

Orbital-selective time-domain signature of nematicity dynamics in the charge-density-wave phase of La 1.65 Eu 0.2 Sr 0.15 CuO 4

Understanding the interplay between charge, nematic, and structural ordering tendencies in cuprate superconductors is critical to unraveling their complex phase diagram. Using pump–probe time-resolved resonant X-ray scattering on the (0 0 1) Bragg peak at the Cu L 3 and O K resonances, we investigate nonequilibrium dynamics of Q a = Q b = 0 nematic order and its association with both charge density wave (CDW) order and lattice dynamics in La 1.65 Eu 0.2 Sr 0.15 CuO 4 . The orbital selectivity of the resonant X-ray scattering cross-section allows nematicity dynamics associated with the planar O 2 p and Cu 3 d states to be distinguished from the response of anisotropic lattice distortions. A direct time-domain comparison of CDW translational-symmetry breaking and nematic rotational-symmetry breaking reveals that these broken symmetries remain closely linked in the photoexcited state, consistent with the stability of CDW topological defects in the investigated pump fluence regime.

Drift kinetic effects on plasma response to resonant magnetic perturbation for EU DEMO design

Abstract A systematic investigation of the plasma response to an externally applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field, for the purpose of controlling edge localized modes, is carried out for an EU DEMO reference plasma. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of kinetic effects associated with both thermal particles and fusion-born alphas. The single fluid, resistive model predicts a large peak amplification of the n = 1 ( n is the toroidal mode number) plasma response to the target equilibrium, which is found to be close to the Troyon no-wall limit. A more advanced response model, including kinetic resonances between the RMP perturbation and drift motions of thermal and energetic particles, on the other hand, finds a strong suppression of the n = 1 field amplification. A major role is played by the precessional drift resonance of fusion-born alphas. A strong parallel sound wave damping model is found to well reproduce the full kinetic response results for the DEMO plasma, in terms of both the resonant field response amplitude and the plasma displacement. Finally, both fluid and kinetic models produce similar responses for the n = 2 and 3 RMP fields for the considered DEMO plasma, whilst kinetic effects again become important for the n = 4 RMP due to proximity of the reference plasma to the no-wall limit for the n = 4 ideal kink instability.

Enhanced Electron-Phonon Coupling for Charge-Density-Wave Formation in La 1.8-$x$ Eu 0.2 Sr $x$ CuO 4+$δ$

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La 1.8-x Eu 0.2 Sr x CuO 4+δ . In this work, we investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW ordering vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW ordering vector of M ≃ 0.36 eV , which decreases to M ≃ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.

Magnetic Weyl Semimetallic Phase in Thin Films of Eu 2 Ir 2 O 7

The interplay between electronic interactions and strong spin-orbit coupling is expected to create a plethora of fascinating correlated topological states of quantum matter. Of particular interest are magnetic Weyl semimetals originally proposed in the pyrochlore iridates, which are only expected to reveal their topological nature in thin film form. To date, however, direct experimental demonstrations of these exotic phases remain elusive, due to the lack of usable single crystals and the insufficient quality of available films. Here, in this study, we report on the discovery of signatures for the long-sought magnetic Weyl semimetallic phase in (111)-oriented Eu 2 Ir 2 O 7 high-quality epitaxial thin films. We observed an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect with colossal coercivity but vanishing net magnetization, which emerges right below the onset of a peculiar magnetic phase with all-in-all-out (AIAO) antiferromagnetic ordering. The anomalous Hall conductivity obtained experimentally is consistent with the theoretical prediction, likely arising from the nonzero Berry curvature emanated by Weyl node pairs near the Fermi level that act as sources and sinks of Berry flux, activated by broken cubic crystal symmetry at the top and bottom terminations of the thin film.

YbV 3 ⁢Sb 4 and EuV 3 ⁢Sb 4 vanadium-based kagome metals with Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ zigzag chains

Here, in this work, we present Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 , two compounds exhibiting slightly distorted vanadium-based kagome nets interleaved with zigzag chains of divalent Yb 2+ and Eu 2+ ions. Single crystal growth methods are reported alongside magnetic, electronic, and heat capacity measurements. Yb⁢V 3⁢ Sb 4 is a nonmagnetic metal with no collective phase transitions observed between 60 mK and 300 K. Conversely, Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 is a magnetic kagome metal exhibiting easy-plane ferromagneticlike order below T C =32 K with hints of modulated spin texture under low field. With Yb⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 and Eu⁢V 3 ⁢Sb 4 we demonstrate another direction for the discovery and development of vanadium-based kagome metals while incorporating the chemical and magnetic degrees of freedom offered by a rare-earth sublattice.

Emission in closely packed Eu (TTA) 3 (DPT) and opportunities for magnetic dipole enhancement

Ultra-thin Langmuir-Blodgett films of amphiphilic complex EuTTA (DPT) with tri-valent Eu ions are highly luminescent even when deposited directly on metal. Emission kinetics obtained in bulk samples and Langmuir-Blodgett films are very different for dense and diluted systems. Here, the experiments indicate a collective emitter behavior in dense systems, which is also sensitive to metal or dielectric environments. In another experiment, using metal-emitter layer-metal structures with EuTTA(DPT) we observe significant modifications of the emission line shapes and a dramatic change in magnetic-to-electric dipole branching ratio with 10-fold relative enhancement of magnetic dipole emission.

Electrodynamics of photo-carriers in multiferroic Eu 0.75 Y 0.25 MnO 3

Understanding and controlling the antiferromagnetic order in multiferroic materials on an ultrafast time scale is a long standing area of interest, due to their potential applications in spintronics and ultrafast magnetoelectric switching. We present an optical pump-terahertz (THz) probe study on multiferroic Eu 0.75 Y 0.25 MnO 3 . The optical pump predominantly excites the d-d transitions of the Mn 3+ ions, and the temporal evolution of the pump-induced transient conductivity is measured with a subsequent THz pulse. Two distinct, temperature-dependent decay times are revealed. The shorter relaxation time corresponds to spin-lattice thermalization, while the longer one is ascribed to electron-hole recombination. A spin-selection rule in the relaxation process is proposed in the magnetic phase. Slight suppression of the electromagnons was observed after the optical pump pulse within the spin-lattice thermalization time scale. These observed fundamental magnetic processes can shed light on ultrafast control of magnetism and photoinduced phase transitions in multiferroics.

Measuring the β-decay Properties of Neutron-rich Exotic Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd Isotopes to Constrain the Nucleosynthesis Yields in the Rare-earth Region

Abstract The β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities of 28 exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd were measured for the first time at RIKEN Nishina Center using the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) and the BRIKEN neutron detector array. The existing β -decay half-life ( T 1/2 ) database was significantly increased toward more neutron-rich isotopes, and uncertainties for previously measured values were decreased. The new data not only constrain the theoretical predictions of half-lives and β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities, but also allow for probing the mechanisms of formation of the high-mass wing of the rare-earth peak located at A ≈ 160 in the r -process abundance distribution through astrophysical reaction network calculations. An uncertainty quantification of the calculated abundance patterns with the new data shows a reduction of the uncertainty in the rare-earth peak region. The newly introduced variance-based sensitivity analysis method offers valuable insight into the influence of important nuclear physics inputs on the calculated abundance patterns. The analysis has identified the half-lives of 168 Sm and of several gadolinium isotopes as some of the key variables among the current experimental data to understand the remaining abundance uncertainty at A = 167–172.

Al-Sm-Eu-Sr systematics of eucrites and moon rocks Implications for planetary bulk compositions

Constraints are placed on the bulk compositions of the eucrite parent body (EPB) and the moon through analysis of the Eu and Sr 'anomalies' of eucrites and lunar rooks. It is noted that the elements Al, REE, and Sr are incompatible with the major minerals of these small, low-f(O2) bodies, except for plagioclase. Predictions can be derived about the concentrations of Al, REE, and Sr in samples affected by plagioclase fractionation, based on the hypothesis that these elements in the EPB and moon are all in proportions close to those in the bulk solar system. It is determined that the predictions are almost idealy fulfilled by eucrites and lunar samples. For the EPB, the ratios REE/Al, Sr/Al, and Sr/REE are found to be constrained probably within 10 percent of the chondritic ratios. For the moon, the constraints are found to be less precise: REE/Al is very probably within 25 percent of chondritic; Sr/Al and Sr/REE are probably within 35 percent of chondritic; Sr/Al and Sr/REE are probably within 35 percent of chondritic. It is concluded that there is a very strong similarity between the bulk compositions of the planets and the compositions of chondritic meteorites.

Superconductivity above 90 K in the square-planar compound system ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = Y, La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu

Superconductivity has been found in the 90-K range in ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) with A = La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Ho, Er, and Lu in addition to Y. The results suggest that the unique square-planar Cu atoms, each surrounded by four or six oxygen atoms, are crucial to the superconductivity of oxides in general. In particular, the high Tc of ABa2Cu3O(6 + x) is attributed mainly to the quasi-two-dimensional assembly of the CuO2-Ba-CuO(2 + x)Ba-CuO2 layers sandwiched between two A layers, with particular emphasis in the CuO(2 + x) layers. Higher-Tc oxides are predicted for compounds with bigger assemblies of CuO2 layers coupled by Ba layers.
