Update on MEA AST [Slides]

Goals: Developing MEA ASTs for Heavy Duty Applications: 1) New protocol published within M2FCT in Nov 2022; 2) Work is ongoing to understand the degradation rates of SOA (State of the Art) materials; 3) The protocol will be updated (If needed) by the end of the Fiscal Year (Sept 2023). Updating component specific ASTs: 1) Catalyst AST: Extend from 30K cycles to 90K cycles to reflect LDV and HDV lifetimes of 5000 (8000 hours) and 25000 (30000 hours); 2) Catalyst Supports: Quantifying carbon corrosion during H 2 /Air AST using NDIR; 3) Membrane Degradation: Membrane thinning and FER measurement. Validating developed ASTs with modeled drive cycles and experiments.

MG-RAVENS: Working Group Update [Slides]

Problem Statement: Users in industry, who are planning the deployment and operation of microgrids, face a multi-domain problem that requires multiple engineering tools to solve; Existing tools lack interoperability, which requires tedious recreation and conversion of equipment models, and creates opportunities for errors in translation or through inconsistent assumptions; Microgrid modelers waste time reinventing the wheel because it is challenging to reuse existing distribution, load, generation, power flow, optimization models for new use cases.

Record Efficiency InGaAs Thermophotovoltaic Cells For Energy Storage Applications

Utility-scale energy storage is a significant technical challenge and a key barrier to widespread adoption of renewable energy. An efficient, modular, and scalable solution can be achieved by storing energy in the form of high-temperature heat and then extracting energy, on demand, using thermophotovoltaic (TPV) cells to convert the heat back to electricity. The ideal thermal emitter temperature is determined by balancing the desire for higher power densities, high-temperature compliant materials, and efficient, cost-effective thermophotovoltaic cells, among other considerations. 0.74-eV InGaAs lattice-matched to InP is a good choice for a cell absorber, and here we describe our development of InGaAs TPV cells with efficiencies of 38.8% from an ~1850 degrees celsius source temperature. This is the highest efficiency yet measured and reported for a single-junction TPV device. This efficiency was achieved by carefully quantifying and then reducing the parasitic absorption in the semiconductor layers, and by significantly reducing the series resistance to minimize the power loss.

NETL's Cost of Capturing CO2 from Industrial Sources and Industrial Carbon Capture Retrofit Database

This presentation was given on behalf of NETL's Strategic Systems Analysis and Engineering Directorate, Energy Process Analysis Team at a United States Energy Association webinar on January 24, 2023. The presentation summarizes techno economic analysis results of nine industrial CO2 capture cases, and also gave an overview and brief demonstration of the industrial sources Carbon Capture Retrofit Database, which is a publicly available tool that estimates capture costs for a subset of the industrial sources appearing in the companion systems analysis report.

Energy in the Balance: PV Reliability to Power the Energy Transition

We present an analysis of the effects of reliability on our ability to achieve the energy transition deployment targets. We examine three end of life modes as captured in the PV ICE tool; degradation, failures, and project lifetime. Recommendations are made for improving PV reliability for achieving energy energy transition.

The Sustainable Decarbonization Challenge

Many countries have decarbonization plans that include transitioning to clean energy. Because of this, PV deployment is projected to at least double or triple in the next ten years. As we ramp up manufacturing and deployment, we aim to sustainably establish secure and just supply chains while reducing environmental impacts. This talk presents our analysis of the virgin material demands, addresses waste concerns regarding quantity and toxicity, and establishes sustainability actions that the PV community can take to ensure sustainability. The takeaway actions are prioritizing reliable, high-quality, and long-lived PV modules and enabling the fast deployment needed for decarbonization via more research and effective communication.
