Market assessment of photovoltaic power systems for agricultural applications in the Philippines

The market potential in the Philippines for stand alone photovoltaic (P/V) systems in agriculture was assessed. Applications include: irrigation, postharvest operation, food and fiber processing and storage, and livestock and fisheries operations. Power and energy use profiles for many applications as well as assessments of business, government and financial climate for P/V sales are described. Many characteristics of the Philippine agriculture and energy sector favorably influence the use of P/V systems. However, serious and significant barriers prevent achieving the technically feasible, cost competitive market for P/V systems in the agricultural sector. The reason for the small market is the limited availability capital for financing P/V systems. It is suggested that innovative financing schemes and promotional campaigns should be devised.

Thermal conductivity of salvaged fused cast alumina used in the glass industry

Fused cast alumina (FCA) has been and continues to be used as a refractory material in energy intensive industries such as glass melting and chemical processing. In-service degradation due to high temperature exposure in harsh environment affects the designed furnace thermal profiles and energy consumption. Phase transformation may occur at the refractory hot face during glass melting altering the properties. Three FCA blocks recovered from industrial furnaces were investigated in this study. The as-received FCA consists primarily of a mixture of alpha (α) and beta (β) alumina that has a thermal conductivity value of 5–6 W/mK. The Hot Disk method was used to obtain thermal conductivity directly on the refractory blocks. At the hot face, a transformation from β to α alumina occurred and was confirmed by an X-ray diffraction study. Thermal conductivity measurements as a function of position also showed a clear transition from β to α alumina at both ends of a complete block with no voids. Thermal conductivity of the α alumina tripled compared to β alumina. This study provides important information of heat transfer and thermal conductivity evolution to refractory manufacturers and users.

Cross-correlation of Dark Energy Survey Year 3 lensing data with ACT and P l a n c k thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect observations. II. Modeling and constraints on halo pressure profiles

Hot, ionized gas leaves an imprint on the cosmic microwave background via the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (tSZ) effect. The cross-correlation of gravitational lensing (which traces the projected mass) with the tSZ effect (which traces the projected gas pressure) is a powerful probe of the thermal state of ionized baryons throughout the Universe and is sensitive to effects such as baryonic feedback. In a companion paper (Gatti et al. Phys. Rev. D 105, 123525 (2022)), we present tomographic measurements and validation tests of the cross-correlation between Galaxy shear measurements from the first three years of observations of the Dark Energy Survey and tSZ measurements from a combination of Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck observations. In this work, we use the same measurements to constrain models for the pressure profiles of halos across a wide range of halo mass and redshift. We find evidence for reduced pressure in low-mass halos, consistent with predictions for the effects of feedback from active Galactic nuclei. We infer the hydrostatic mass bias (B ≡ M 500c /M SZ from our measurements, finding B = 1.8 ± 0.1 when adopting the Planck-preferred cosmological parameters. We additionally find that our measurements are consistent with a nonzero redshift evolution of B, with the correct sign and sufficient magnitude to explain the mass bias necessary to reconcile cluster count measurements with the Planck-preferred cosmology. Our analysis introduces a model for the impact of intrinsic alignments (IAs) of galaxy shapes on the shear-tSZ correlation. We show that IA can have a significant impact on these correlations at current noise levels.

Multiwavelength Emission From Pulsar Slot Gaps

We present results of a 3D model of optical to gamma-ray emission from the slot gap accelerator of a rotation-powered pulsar. Primary electrons accelerating to high altitude in the pulsar magnetosphere at the outer edge of the open field volume, as well as electron-positron pairs on field line interior to the slot gap, radiate curvature, inverse Compton and synchrotron radiation. Both primaries and pairs undergo cyclotron resonant absorption of radio photons, allowing them to maintain significant pitch angles and to produce a broad spectrum of emission from infra-red to GeV energies. Synchrotron radiation from pairs with a power-law energy spectrum dominate the spectrum up to 10 MeV. Synchrotron and curvature radiation of primaries dominates from 10 MeV up to a few GeV. The high-energy pulse profiles are dominated by caustics on trailing field lines. In the case of the Crab pulsar, the radio conal emission may also form caustics in phase with the high-energy peaks. If resonant absorption of radio emission produces high-energy synchroti-on radiation, emission below 200 Mev is expected to exhibit correlations in time and phase with the radio emission.

Efficient Modeling of Structural, Electronic, and Optical Properties of Silver and Gold Metal Nanoclusters and Alloys Using Optimized SCC-DFTB Parameters

Computation of optical properties using conventional time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) is time-consuming and memory-intensive. In this study, we investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the density functional tight binding (DFTB) framework with newly optimized Slater–Koster (SK) parameters for modeling the structural, electronic properties, and absorption spectra of silver and gold nanoclusters and their alloys. Our investigation of the ground state (GS) properties demonstrates that the newly developed GS-SK parameters enable DFTB to closely approximate DFT-calculated bond lengths for octahedron, tetrahedron, icosahedra, and truncated octahedron with sizes Ag n /Au n (n = 19, 20, 38, 55), nanoclusters and Ag 20 /Au 20 nanoalloys, with a maximum deviation of approximately 0.15 Å. Formation energy results indicate that the GS-SK parameters can closely estimate changes in formation energies with alloy composition, and the comparison of electronic structures for Ag 20 , Au 20 , and AgAu alloy nanoclusters using the DFTB approximation reveals good agreement in the projected density of states (DOS) profiles and energy levels. A second set of SK parameters, ES-SK, has been developed to describe excited state (ES) properties, including the absorption spectra of silver octahedron Ag 19 , tetrahedral Ag n (n = 20, 56, 84), truncated octahedron Ag 38 , and icosahedra Ag 55 closed-shell clusters and their gold and alloy counterparts over a broad range of alloy compositions. This parametrization uses TD-DFTB calculations and fine-tunes the d and p eigenvalues by comparing them to reference absorption spectra from first-principles TD-DFT. This enables the generation of absorption spectra that closely match the reference spectra when plasmon excitation is dominant, as demonstrated by studying the plasmonic properties of icosahedral Ag n and Au n (n = 309 and 561) nanoparticles. This includes the rapid loss in plasmon quality when Au partially replaces Ag in alloy clusters. Furthermore, these results provide a foundation for addressing computational bottlenecks in plasmonics and with new prospects for applications in the quantum plasmonics for bimetallic alloys.

Airport Ground Support Equipment Analysis

Ground support equipment (GSE) plays a critical role in providing services to aircraft at arrival and departure gates, ensuring smooth and efficient airport operations. As the airline industry seeks to reduce costs and expand energy options, electric GSE (eGSE) is emerging as a promising solution. This project examines the integration of eGSE into airport operations, addressing key considerations such as vehicle deployment, charging infrastructure, and grid impacts. We developed a flexible, bottom-up modeling framework to evaluate energy demands and infrastructure requirements across more than 300 U.S. airports, providing actionable insights to support electrification planning and implementation. The study focuses on eight major types of GSE with commercially available electric counterparts: aircraft tractors, ground power units, baggage tractors, belt loaders, cargo loaders, catering trucks, lavatory trucks, and water trucks. Project results include annual charging load profiles, total energy consumption, and the charger and fleet requirements for each airport.

Extending the low-recycling, flat temperature profile regime in the lithium tokamak experiment-β (LTX-β) with ohmic and neutral beam heating

Abstract Recent experiments in the lithium tokamak experiment- β (LTX- β ) have extended the duration, performance, operating conditions, and diagnosis of the flat-temperature profile, low-recycling regime first observed in LTX. As expected, Li retains hydrogen and suppresses edge neutral cooling, allowing increased edge electron temperature, roughly equal to the core T e . Flat temperature profiles had been obtained transiently in LTX, as the plasma density decayed following the cessation of edge gas puffing. Careful control over the fueling in LTX- β has now been shown to sustain the flat T e profile and hot edge unique to the low-recycling regime for multiple confinement times in high performance discharges with decaying or steady density. With low density, the flat T e profile is also seen to extend into the scrape-off layer. Neutral beam heating is observed in target discharges with relatively flat electron temperature profiles ( T edge ∼ T core /2), though beam heating is stronger in discharges with higher fueling, higher density, and depressed edge T e . Beam heating produces additional peaking of the T e profile, without degradation of the energy confinement time. Neutral beam heating of target discharges with relatively flat electron temperature profiles similarly results in broad beam heated temperature profiles. Energy confinement in LTX- β generally compares favorably to ohmic and H-mode scalings, frequently exceeding them by factors of 2–4. New and improved diagnostics in LTX- β enable better characterization of this unique regime, including measurements of ion temperature and high field side Thomson scattering profiles. As an initial step toward characterizing turbulence with no T e gradient and roughly equal density and pressure gradient, core fluctuation spectra have been measured in peaked T e discharges using far-forward scattering and fluctuation reflectometry.

Optimizing and Exploring Untapped Micro-Hydro Hybrid Systems: a Multi-Objective Approach for Crystal Lake as a Large-Scale Energy Storage Solution

Increasing electricity demand and concerns about climate change and fossil fuel consumption have highlighted the importance of renewable energy resources and storage systems. This paper proposes a method for exploring untapped pumped hydro storage potentials to accommodate intermittent renewable energy generation profiles. Hourly measured data from 2022 in Benzie County, Michigan, United States, were gathered for system sizing and a thorough, realistic analysis. By employing the multi-objective grey wolf optimization algorithm, we formulated optimal sizing and energy-management strategies for three different scenarios. Unlike similar studies, the 3rd with triple objective functions (OFs) scenario aims to maximize both reliability and ecological OFs while minimizing the cost OF. It has shown promising results with multiple solutions, considering economic, environmental, and reliability factors. A case study conducted in Crystal Lake, Michigan, revealed that although Crystal Lake would function only as a micro-hydro power facility, it is a promising and huge storage unit with a substantial storage capacity of around 14.9734GWh. The system investigated is significant in the USA due to its rapid deployment capabilities, minimal construction requirements, and ease of integration with the distribution grid. The fuzzy logic method was employed to identify the best non-dominant solution among the other solutions. Furthermore, these outcomes include a notably low levelized cost of energy at 0.046147$/kWh, a robust index of reliability of 99.705%, and a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions amounting to 7.9142×10 3 tons/year, when considering the triple OFs. The paper’s methodology provides valuable insights for regions aiming to utilize renewable energy from untapped storage sources.

Canadian Oil Sands Extraction and Upgrading: A Synthesis of the Data on Energy Consumption, CO 2 Emissions, and Supply Costs

As Canadian crude bitumen production from oil sands has increased in recent decades, the nation’s oil and gas industry has become a significant contributor to national greenhouse gas emissions. Canada has developed carbon emission reduction targets to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions and Mid-Century Strategy goals. A detailed profile of energy consumption pathways in the oil sands industry is necessary to identify potential areas of improvement and to monitor progress toward meeting emissions reduction targets. Much of the existing literature for oil sands modeling provides input assumptions with different technological boundaries. For a set of oil sands extraction and upgrading technologies, this study first reviews the literature and then quantifies energy input requirements, CO 2 emissions, and operating costs for a set of consistent technological boundaries and energy units. Summary results refer to requirements and costs at the production facility, excluding transportation and blending costs. An energy system diagram of oil sands production that matches these boundaries is provided, which can be used by integrated assessment models, oil sands companies, and government ministries to evaluate the present and future energy consumption and emissions pathways of the oil sands industry.
