Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 2: Delta 2914 launched TDRSS, Configuration 2. Part 2: Final Report, 22 August 1972 - 1 April 1973

Configuration data and design information for a Delta 2914 launched configuration with greatly enhanced telecommunication service over the Part I Delta 2914 configuration is contained. The overall system definition, operations and control, and telecommunication service system, including link budgets are discussed. A brief description of the user transceiver and ground station is presented. A final section includes a summary description of the TDR spacecraft and all the subsystems. The data presented are largely in tabular form.

Delta launch vehicle inertial guidance system (DIGS)

The Delta inertial guidance system, part of the Delta launch vehicle improvement effort, has been flown on three launches and was found to perform as expected for a variety of mission profiles and vehicle configurations.

The Delta Launch Vehicle Model 2914 Series

The newest Delta launch vehicle configuration, Model 2914 is described for potential users together with recent flight results. A functional description of the vehicle, its performance, flight profile, flight environment, injection accuracy, spacecraft integration requirements, user organizational interfaces, launch operations, costs and reimbursable users payment plan are provided. The versatile, relatively low cost Delta has a flight demonstrated reliability record of 92 percent that has been established in 96 launches over twelve years while concurrently undergoing ten major upratings to keep pace with the ever increasing performance and reliability requirements of its users. At least 40 more launches are scheduled over the next three years from the Eastern and Western Test Ranges.

Lee-side vortices on delta wings at hypersonic speeds.

A fluid-dynamic investigation was carried out to determine the cause of intense heating observed on the lee meridian of hypersonic delta wings and also to derive means for its suppression. Several experimental techniques were combined with analysis of extensive heat-transfer measurements at a freestream Mach number of six in a range of Reynolds number to acquire a general description of the lee-flow structure. With attached leading-edge flow on the delta wings, the dominant feature is a pair of embedded vortices on the lee meridian whose interaction with the boundary-layer is responsible for the observed local heating. On the basis of flow visualization results and heat-transfer correlations, a qualitative vortex flow model is proposed which differs essentially from the conventional inboard separation vortex model.

Eutectic superalloys strengthened by delta Ni3Cb lamellae, and gamma prime, Ni3Al precipitates.

Bivariant eutectic alloys, located on a liquidus surface within the Ni-Cb-Cr-Al quaternary, were identified which permitted the production of aligned delta Ni3Cb lamellae within a nichrome matrix containing the fcc precipitate gamma prime Ni3Al. The volume fraction of delta and gamma prime could be varied significantly by compositional changes. After directional solidification certain alloys possessed improved ductility and corrosion resistance with respect to the Ni3Al-Ni3Cb eutectic, while their values of tensile and creep strength approached or exceeded those for the Ni3Al-Ni3Cb pseudobinary system. The mechanical properties of the directionally solidified alloy, Ni-19.7 wt % Cb-6.0 wt % Cr-2.5 wt % Al, were evaluated. Its longitudinal strength in tension and creep was found to be superior to all advanced nickel base superalloys. It is thus demonstrated that useful properties for gas turbine airfoil applications can be achieved by reinforcing a strong and tough gamma nichrome matrix containing precipitated gamma prime by a strong lamellar intermetallic compound having greater strength at elevated temperature.

Eutectic superalloys strengthened by aligned delta, Ni3Cb lamellae, gamma-prime, Ni3Al precipitates and reduced interlamellar spacing.

Monovariant eutectic alloys, located on the liquidus trough between the binary eutectic gamma, Ni - delta, Ni3Cb and the ternary eutectic gamma, Ni - gamma-prime, Ni3Al - delta, Ni3Cb, were identified which permitted the production of aligned lamellae within a nickel solid solution matrix containing the precipitate gamma-prime. These alloys exhibited great insensitivity in their composite microstructures to solidification parameters such as growth rate temperature gradient, and were found to be remarkably uniform in composition along their length.

Unsteady aerodynamic analysis of space shuttle vehicles. Part 2: Steady and unsteady aerodynamics of sharp-edged delta wings

An analysis of the steady and unsteady aerodynamics of sharp-edged slender wings has been performed. The results show that slender wing theory can be modified to give the potential flow static and dynamic characteristics in incompressible flow. A semiempirical approximation is developed for the vortex-induced loads, and it is shown that the analytic approximation for sharp-edged slender wings gives good prediction of experimentally determined steady and unsteady aerodynamics at M = 0 and M = 1. The predictions are good not only for delta wings but also for so-called arrow and diamond wings. The results indicate that the effects of delta planform lifting surfaces can be included in a simple manner when determining elastic launch vehicle dynamic characteristics. Transonic flutter study of a 50.5 deg cropped-delta wing with two rearward-mounted nacelles

Transonic flutter characteristics of three geometrically similar delta-wing models were experimentally determined in the Langley transonic dynamics tunnel at Mach numbers from about 0.6 to 1.2. The models were designed to be simplified versions of an early supersonic transport wing design. The model was an aspect-ratio-1.28 cropped-delta wing with a leadingedge sweep of 50.5 deg. The flutter characteristics obtained for this wing configuration indicated a minimum flutter-speed index near a Mach number of 0.92 and a transonic compressibility dip amounting to about a 27-percent decrease in the flutter-speed index relative to the value at a Mach number of 0.6. Analytical studies were performed for one wing model at Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, and 0.9 by using both doublet-lattice and lifting-surface (kernel-function) unsteady aerodynamic theory. A comparison of the analytical and experimental flutter results showed good agreement at all Mach numbers investigated.

Vegetation mapping from ERTS imagery of the Okavango Delta

The Okavango is Botswana's major water resource. The present study has been specifically directed at mapping vegetation types within the delta and generally concerned with finding what information of value to plant and animal ecologists could be extracted from the imagery. To date it has been found that. (1) It is possible to map broad vegetation types from the imagery. (2) Imagery of the delta records the state of the system in a manner which will facilitate long-term studies of plant succession. (3) Phenological events can be detected. (4) The imagery can be used to detect and map wild fires. This will be useful in determining the role of fire in the ecology of the region. Using the imagery it is thus possible to map existing vegetation and monitor both short and long-term changes.

Theoretical and experimental longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of an aspect ratio 0.25 sharp-edge delta wing at subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic speeds

The suction analogy concept of Polhamus for predicting vortex lift in conjunction with an appropriate potential-flow solution is called the present method. This method is applied to an aspect ratio 0.25 sharp-edge delta wing from a Mach number of 0.143 to 10.4 in free air and at 0.074 in ground effect, and also to an aspect ratio 0.35 triangular crosssectional body at a Mach number of 6.9. The models had subsonic leading edges at the test Mach numbers. Vortex-flow effects could be neither confirmed nor denied to exist at high speeds because of the lack of flow visualization above a Mach number of 0.143. The data, however, could be better predicted by including a vortex-flow effect, although not always to the extent predicted from the present method because of the presence of actual and hypothesized unmodeled flow situations. The method of Nenni and Tung (NASA CR-1860) tended to confirm the existence of vortex flow at hypersonic speeds. The hypersonic-tangent-cone method predicted best the delta-wing results over the test angle-of-attack range and hypersonic Mach number range and did equally as well as the present method for the triangular body.

Effect of channel errors on delta modulation transmission

We have considered the response of a variable step size delta modulator communication system, to errors caused by a noisy channel. For the particular adaptive delta modulation scheme proposed by Song, Garodnick, and Schilling (1971), we have a simple analytic formulation of the output error propagation due to a single channel error. It is shown that single channel errors cause a change in the amplitude and dc level of the output, but do not otherwise affect the shape of the output waveform. At low channel error rates, these effects do not cause any degradation in audio transmission. Higher channel error rates cause overflow or saturation of the step size register. We present relationships between channel error rate, register size, and the probability of register overflow.

Resistance of a gamma/gamma prime - delta directionally solidified eutectic alloy to recrystallization

The lamellar directionally solidified nickel-base eutectic alloy gamma/gamma prime-delta has potential as an advanced turbine blade material. The microstructural stability of this alloy was investigated. Specimens were plastically deformed by uniform compression or Brinell indentation, then annealed between 705 and 1120 C. Microstructural changes observed after annealing included gamma prime coarsening, pinch-off and spheroidization of delta lamellae, and the appearance of an unidentified blocky phase in surface layers. All but the first of these was localized in severely deformed regions, suggesting that microstructural instability is not a serious problem in the use of this alloy.

The delta Doppler technique for LDV measurements at long distances

A technique for measuring velocity, referred to as a Delta Doppler technique, was presented. This technique determines scattering source velocities by measuring the difference in Doppler shifts of two different frequencies. By transmitting the two frequencies along the same path, a moving fringe pattern is established such that a nonmoving scatterer at the sensing volume would see an intensity variation exactly equal to the difference in the transmitted frequencies. If the particle has a velocity component along an axis which bisects the angle formed by the transmitter and receiver axes, a Doppler shift in the difference frequency can be measured and the velocity component computed. The frequency measured would correspond to the difference in Doppler frequencies that two laser Doppler velocimeters using separate frequencies (the same frequencies as used previously) would have measured, thus the term Delta Doppler.

Postflight analysis for Delta Program Mission no. 113: COS-B Mission

On 8 August 1975, the COS-B spacecraft was launched successfully from the Western Test Range (Delta Program Mission No. 113). The launch vehicle was a three stage Extended Long Tank Delta DSV-3P-11B vehicle. Postflight analyses performed in connection with flight are presented. Vehicle trajectory, stage performance, vehicle reliability and the propulsion, guidance, flight control, electronics, mechanical and structural systems are evaluated.

A survey of leeside flow and heat transfer on delta planform configurations

The dominant feature of hypersonic leeside flow fields is the presence of coiled vortices which are generated as the leeside boundary layer responds to the inviscid flow field. Depending on geometric and stream parameters, the vortices can be completely maintained within the boundary layer or can lie outside which is the more familiar case of rolled-up vortices associated with separated flow. Three main areas are covered: (1) fundamental leeside flow phenomena associated with inviscid flows, separation and vortex phenomena involving viscid-inviscid interactions on sharp-edged delta wings and cones; (2) the application of these fundamental concepts to delta-wing bodies such as the space shuttle; and (3) the opportunity and a proposed approach to use early shuttle orbiter entry flights to obtain leeside data.

The effect of delta ray production on Cerenkov counter response

Light generated by delta rays in Cerenkov counters contributes to the mean counter signal in addition to producing fluctuations in this signal. The dependence of this contribution on the energy of the primary particle deviates significantly from the Cerenkov formula. When using such a counter to measure the index of a typical cosmic ray power law spectrum, neglect of this effect can yield a value for the spectral index which is too high by 0.3. This paper presents calculations of this delta ray contribution as a function of the energy of the primary particle. It points out the need for accurate and independent determination of such experimental parameters as counter resolution (intrinsic and statistical), linearity, and normalization.

On high-velocity interstellar gas toward Delta Sco

Independent observations of the Na I D2 line toward Delta Sco are described which show that the two high-velocity absorption components reported by Hicks et al. (1975) are not of normal interstellar origin. A portion of the spectrum of Delta Sco near the D2 line is presented, and it is proposed that the two absorption components may have been of atmospheric origin, although their separation and relative intensities do not suggest any obvious counterparts within the observed telluric spectrum.

Techniques for correcting transmission errors in video adaptive delta modulation channels

We investigated the effects of channel errors on an adaptive delta modulator used to encode video signals. The investigation revealed that channel errors caused a permanent shift in the dc level of the delta modulator's estimate. Errors in the step size, on the other hand, were transitory and had no noticeable effect on the received pictures. We then presented three error correction schemes to minimize the visibility of the channel errors in the received picture. The first scheme required the transmitter to periodically send the correct dc level of the estimate to the receiver. The second method employed a leaky integrator, and the third method used line-to-line interpolation
