Recipes for degrees of freedom of frequency stability estimators

The Allan variance for an averaging time tau can be estimated either from all available phase samples or from a subgrid of samples with spacing tau. This paper gives a set of computational recipes that yield the variance of both estimators, with less than 2 percent error, for the five power-law components of the classical continuous-time clock noise model.

Six-degree-of-freedom guidance and control-entry analysis of the HL-20

The ability of the HL-20 lifting body to fly has been evaluated for an automated entry from atmospheric interface to landing. This evaluation was required to demonstrate that not only successful touchdown conditions would be possible for this low lift-to-drag-ratio vehicle, but also the vehicle would not exceed its design dynamic pressure limit of 400 psf during entry. This dynamic pressure constraint limit, coupled with limited available pitch-control authority at low supersonic speeds, restricts the available maneuvering capability for the HL-20 to acquire the runway. One result of this analysis was that this restrictive maneuvering capability does not allow the use of a model-following atmospheric entry-guidance algorithm, such as that used by the Space Shuttle, but instead requires a more adaptable guidance algorithm. Therefore, for this analysis, a predictor-corrector guidance algorithm was developed that would provide successful touchdown conditions while not violating the dynamic pressure constraint. A flight-control system was designed and incorporated, along with the predictor-corrector guidance algorithm, into a six-DOF simulation. which showed that the HL-20 remained controllable and could reach the landing site and execute a successful landing under all off-nominal conditions simulated.

Local performance optimization for a class of redundant eight-degree-of-freedom manipulators

Local performance optimization for joint limit avoidance and manipulability maximization (singularity avoidance) is obtained by using the Jacobian matrix pseudoinverse and by projecting the gradient of an objective function into the Jacobian null space. Real-time redundancy optimization control is achieved for an eight-joint redundant manipulator having a three-axis spherical shoulder, a single elbow joint, and a four-axis spherical wrist. Symbolic solutions are used for both full-Jacobian and wrist-partitioned pseudoinverses, partitioned null-space projection matrices, and all objective function gradients. A kinematic limitation of this class of manipulators and the limitation's effect on redundancy resolution are discussed. Results obtained with graphical simulation are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of local redundant manipulator performance optimization. Actual hardware experiments performed to verify the simulated results are also discussed. A major result is that the partitioned solution is desirable because of low computation requirements. The partitioned solution is suboptimal compared with the full solution because translational and rotational terms are optimized separately; however, the results show that the difference is not significant. Singularity analysis reveals that no algorithmic singularities exist for the partitioned solution. The partitioned and full solutions share the same physical manipulator singular conditions. When compared with the full solution, the partitioned solution is shown to be ill-conditioned in smaller neighborhoods of the shared singularities.

Intelligent control of a multi-degree-of freedom reaction compensating platform system using fuzzy logic

This paper presents the development of a general-purpose fuzzy logic (FL) control methodology for isolating the external vibratory disturbances of space-based devices. According to the desired performance specifications, a full investigation regarding the development of an FL controller was done using different scenarios, such as variances of passive reaction-compensating components and external disturbance load. It was shown that the proposed FL controller is robust in that the FL-controlled system closely follows the prespecified ideal reference model. The comparative study also reveals that the FL-controlled system achieves significant improvement in reducing vibrations over passive systems.

A microcontroller-based three degree-of-freedom manipulator testbed

A wheeled exploratory vehicle is under construction at the Mars Mission Research Center at North Carolina State University. In order to serve as more than an inspection tool, this vehicle requires the ability to interact with its surroundings. A crane-type manipulator, as well as the necessary control hardware and software, has been developed for use as a sample gathering tool on this vehicle. The system is controlled by a network of four Motorola M68HC11 microcontrollers. Control hardware and software were developed in a modular fashion so that the system can be used to test future control algorithms and hardware. Actuators include three stepper motors and one solenoid. Sensors include three optical encoders and one cable tensiometer. The vehicle supervisor computer provides the manipulator system with the approximate coordinates of the target object. This system maps the workspace surrounding the given location by lowering the claw, along a set of evenly spaced vertical lines, until contact occurs. Based on this measured height information and prior knowledge of the target object size, the system determines if the object exists in the searched area. The system can find and retrieve a 1.25 in. diameter by 1.25 in. tall cylinder placed within the 47.5 sq in search area in less than 12 minutes. This manipulator hardware may be used for future control algorithm verification and serves as a prototype for other manipulator hardware.
