A new metric to control nucleation and grain size distribution in hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites by tuning the dielectric constant of the antisolvent

In perovskite research, there is a widely exploited but poorly explained phenomenon in which the addition of “antisolvents (ATS)” to precursor solutions results in higher-quality films. We explain the mechanism and driving force underlying an antisolvent-driven solvent extraction process. Density functional theory calculations uncover the defining effects of antisolvent choice on the extent of complexation between a lead salt and a methylammonium cation in solution. We experimentally validate the computational results using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and 207 Pb nuclear magnetic spectroscopy of methylammonium lead iodide solutions, containing both a processing solvent and an antisolvent. Furthermore, we uncover, and subsequently identify, the appearance of new species in solution as a result of the addition of the antisolvent. Furthermore, we observe that the choice of antisolvent has a substantial effect on the nature of the complexation of the methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) precursor species, whose origin we explain at an atomic level; specifically, the lower the dielectric of the antisolvent, the stronger the intermolecular binding energy between methylammonium cation (MA + ) cation and PbI 3 - plumbate, independent of the solvent or antisolvent interaction with the lead salt. Thin films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy; images of the films show how the addition of an antisolvent influences and, importantly, can be used to alter thin-film grain size. Grain size and distribution in thin films is reflected by the choice of antisolvent, promoting slower nucleation rates, a lower nucleation density, and hence larger final grain size.

Two-bond 13 C– 13 C spin-coupling constants in saccharides: dependencies on exocyclic hydroxyl group conformation

Seven doubly 13 C-labeled isotopomers of methyl β-D-glucopyranoside, methyl β-D-xylopyranoside, methyl β-D-galactopyranoside, methyl β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-glucopyranoside and methyl β-D-galactopyranosyl-(1→4)-β-D-xylopyranoside were prepared, crystallized, and studied by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and solid-state 13 C NMR spectroscopy to determine experimentally the dependence of 2 J C1,C3 values in aldopyranosyl rings on the C1–C2–O2–H torsion angle, θ 2 , involving the C2 carbon of the C1–C2–C3 coupling pathway. Using X-ray crystal structures to determine θ 2 in crystalline samples and by selecting compounds that exhibit a relatively wide range of θ 2 values in the crystalline state, 2 J C1,C3 values measured in crystalline samples were plotted against θ 2 and the resulting plot compared to that obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For θ 2 values ranging from ~90° to ~240°, very good agreement was observed between the experimental and theoretical plots, providing strong validation of DFT-calculated spin-coupling dependencies on exocyclic C–O bond conformation involving the central carbon of geminal C–C–C coupling pathways. we report that these findings provide new experimental evidence supporting the use of 2 J CCC values as non-conventional spin-coupling constraints in MA'AT conformational modeling of saccharides in solution, and the use of NMR spin-couplings not involving coupled hydroxyl hydrogens as indirect probes of C–O bond conformation. Solvomorphism was observed in crystalline βGal-(1→4)-βGlcOCH 3 wherein the previously-reported methanol solvate form was found to spontaneously convert to a monohydrate upon air-drying, leading to small but discernible conformational changes in, and a new crystalline form of, this disaccharide.

Examining the order-of-limits problem and lattice constant performance of the Tao–Mo functional

In their recent communication a semi-local density functional derived from the density matrix expansion of the exchange hole localised by a general coordinate transformation. We show that the order-of-limits problem present in the functional, dismissed as harmless in the original publication, causes severe errors in predicted phase transition pressures. We also show that the claim that lattice volume prediction accuracy exceeds that of existing similar functionals was based on comparison to reference data that misses anharmonic zero-point expansion and consequently overestimates accuracy. Here, by highlighting these omissions, we give a more accurate assessment of the Tao-Mo functional and show a possible direction for resolving the order-of-limits problem.
