Water transport pathway in clay interlayer upon dehydration [Slides]

Smectite (e.g., Montmorillonite): phyllosilicate minerals found in bentonites. Bentonites have been considered as key backfill barrier materials in deep geological nuclear waste repository concepts. Swelling/shrinking of montmorillonite (MMT) occurs with increasing/decreasing relative humidity. Microscopically, how does the hydration/dehydration process occur?

Gypsum and clay-based additives to MSW for pre-combustion enhancement of syngas and solid residue improvement (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

This project was focused on the development of a cost-effective and practical approach for the recovery of metals and syngas from municipal solid waste (MSW) thermally processed in a gasification or combustion (i.e. waste-to-energy (WTE)) facility with the inclusion of other waste streams. The goal of additional waste inclusion was targeted to change the oxidation of critical and precious elements to enable them to be more efficiently recovered. The project had two main components: laboratory testing and techno-economic analysis (TEA). The additional waste included with MSW as gypsum and spent FCC (sFCC) catalyst as additives to improve material recovery and energy efficiency in MSW and WTE ash.

M3SF-24LL010301062-Surface Complexation/Ion Exchange Data Integration for Radionuclide Sorption to Clay Minerals

This progress report (Level 3 Milestone Number M3SF-24LL010301062) summarizes research conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) within the Argillite International Collaborations Work Package SF-24LL01030106. The activity is focused on our long-term commitment to engaging our partners in international nuclear waste repository research. The focus of this milestone is the establishment of international collaborations for sorption modeling and the associated impacts of unlocking larger, community-based datasets. More specifically, we are developing a database framework for Spent Fuel and Waste and Science Technology (SFWST) that is aligned with the Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden Rossendorf (HZDR) and other international sorption database development groups in support of the database needs of the SFWST program.
