Impact of sub-core scale heterogeneity on CO2/brine multiphase flow for geological carbon storage in the Minnelusa sandstone

CO2 geological storage in deep saline aquifers is a mitigation option for CO2 emissions due to its large storage capacity and immediate accessibility. Accurately determining the CO2-brine relative permeability curves is key to the evaluation of CO2 injectivity and sweep efficiency in reservoir simulation as well as the CO2 injection in the field. This study highlights the remarkable effects of sub-core scale heterogeneity on the CO2-brine multiphase flow properties of the Minnelusa Sandstone in Wyoming. Two unsteady state CO2-brine drainage experiments were performed on the two samples. The first sample exhibits slanted laminated structure, while the second one represents a more homogeneous sandstone system. The CO2 saturation distributions during drainage reveals that the main variation in multiphase flow properties of two core samples were attributed to the porosity distribution that leads to the capillary pressure heterogeneity. Assisted history matching was used to obtain the respective relative permeability curves, which suggests heterogeneity-dependent behavior. In addition, sensitive and uncertainty analyses indicate that physical and petro-physical properties of low-porosity and low-permeability bedding layers exert marked effects on CO2 front breakthrough time and brine production. The results presented in this study help to gain insight into the CO2-brine multiphase flow properties in heterogeneous sandstones and can pave the way for the upscaling of CO2 migration and field-scale simulation accurately. Carbon Storage and Utilization: Perspective on Water Usage and Opportunities

Disseminate technical and non-technical perspective on the opportunities for water recovery from produced water and CO2 storage in the I-WEST region. Concerned citizens and advocacy groups; farmers and ranchers; tribal, state, city, and county leaders; and project leaders working on water-related initiatives are all encouraged to participate in the workshop. This workshop is an opportunity for regional stakeholders to join the conversation about the challenges and opportunities water presents for energy transition in the Inter- Mountain West.

Task 5: Developing a Tool to Quantify Liability of Geologic Carbon Storage

This talk provides an overview of work being done on NRAP Phase 3 Task 5. Task 5 involves the liability or cost of responding to potential adverse events. The focus of Task 5 is on the cost of responding to potential leakage of CO2 and brine out of the storage formation or induced seismic incidents.

Developing a Mapping Inquiry Tool and Geodatabase to Support Characterization of Candidate Geologic Carbon Storage Sites

Poster to showcase the Class VI Mapping Inquiry Tool (C6 MapIT) and support geodatabase available on EDX. C6 MapIT and the underpinning Class VI Data Support Tool Geodatabase serve as comprehensive resources to aid with understanding data availability and supporting the initial stages of Class VI siting and permit applications. In addition to enabling users to explore available spatial data, additional resources are provided to empower users to find more information, such as links to documentation to support project goals, a query tool for USGS publications, and links to relevant sections of the EPA Class VI documentation. Safe and appropriate selection of UIC Class VI well sites is key as the U.S. makes the energy transition. The Class VI Mapping Inquiry Tool and Class VI Data Tool Geodatabase are valuable, intuitive resources that empower commercial and industry stakeholders to explore, analyze, and acquire Class VI related data.
