SRM attrition rate study of the aft motor case segments due to water impact cavity collapse loading

The attrition assessment of the aft segments of Solid Rocket Motor due to water impact requires the establishment of a correlation between loading occurrences and structural capability. Each discrete load case, as identified by the water impact velocities and angle, varies longitudinally and radially in magnitude and distribution of the external pressure. The distributions are further required to be shifted forward or aft one-fourth the vehicle diameter to assure minimization of the effect of test instrumentation location for the load determinations. The asymmetrical load distributions result in large geometric nonlinearities in structural response. The critical structural response is progressive buckling of the case. Discrete stiffeners have been added to these aft segments to aid in gaining maximum structural capability for minimum weight addition for resisting these loads. This report presents the development of the attrition assessment of the aft segments and includes the rationale for eliminating all assessable conservatisms from this assessment.

Effects of casing treatment on a small, transonic axial-flow compressor

Improved axial compressor surge margin through effective rotor casing treatment has been identified from test results on large axial compressors. A modified scale of a large compressor was built and tested to determine if similar improvements in surge margin could be duplicated in small-size turbomachinery. In addition, the effects of rotor radial running clearance, both with and without casing treatment, were investigated and are discussed. Test results of the scale configuration are presented and compared to the parent compressor.

Probabilistic fracture mechanics and optimum fracture control of the solid rocket motor case of the shuttle

Development of a procedure for the reliability analysis of the solid rocket motor case of the space shuttle is described. The analysis is based on probabilistic fracture mechanics and consideration of a probability distribution for the initial flaw sizes. The reliability analysis can be used to select design variables, such as the thickness of the SRM case, projected design life and proof factor, on the basis of minimum expected cost and specified reliability bounds. Effects of fracture control plans such as the non-destructive inspections and the material erosion between missions can also be considered in the developed methodology for selection of design variables. The reliability-based procedure can be easily modified to consider other similar structures and different fracture control plans.

Effect of slotted casing treatment with change in Reynolds number index on performance of a jet engine

A tip-treated J85-13 engine was tested at Reynolds number indices (RNI) of 0.3 and 0.7 with a clean inlet for 80- and 100-percent corrected engine speeds. This engine was equipped with a compressor case which allowed changes to the case wall over the rotor tips of six of its eight stages. For all tests, the principal effects were (1) with tip treatment, a stall pressure ratio loss of 6 percent at 100 percent corrected engine speeds for both the 0.3 and 0.7 RNI, and (2) with and without tip treatment, decreasing the RNI from 0.7 to 0.3 decreased the stall pressure ratio 3.8 percent for 100 percent corrected engine speed and 2.8 percent for 80-percent corrected engine speed.

Non-destructive ultrasonic measurements of case depth

Two ultrasonic methods for nondestructive measurements of the depth of a case-hardened layer in steel are described. One method involves analysis of ultrasonic waves diffused back from the bulk of the workpiece. The other method involves finding the speed of propagation of ultrasonic waves launched on the surface of the work. Procedures followed in the two methods for measuring case depth are described.

Algorithms for isolating worst case systematic data errors

Two separate algorithms are derived for testing filter sensitivity to systematic data errors. One algorithm provides the absolute minimum Euclidean norm data error for a given estimate component error. The second algorithm can be used to find the minimum norm data error which can be generated by restricted degree Legendre polynomials. A specific very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) baseline estimation is analyzed with the algorithm. It is found that the local vertical is the most sensitive component to error in the data space. The efficiency of a data error sequence linear in elevation angle is within 7% that of the absolute worst case sequence. Elevation angle dependent errors are explored and the special case of a mismodeled troposphere is treated.

Helicopter internal noise control: Three case histories

Case histories are described in which measurable improvements in the cabin noise environments of the Bell 214B, 206B, and 222 were realized. These case histories trace the noise control efforts followed in each vehicle. Among the design approaches considered, the addition of a fluid pulsation damper in a hydraulic system and the installation of elastomeric engine mounts are highlighted. It is concluded that substantial weight savings result when the major interior noise sources are controlled by design, both in altering the noise producing mechanism and interrupting the sound transmission paths.

Cell cases for Discus 3

Batteries designed for the defense satellite communications system were modified to meet increased power requirements. A stainless steel case for the cell, approximately 4 inches wide, 4 1/2 inches high and 1 inch thick, with a weld down a narrow edge, has 12 mil 304-L stainless steel side walls and a 19 mil 304-L stainless bottom. A dip-brazed 60-61 aluminum retainer is electrically separated from the steel case by 15 mils of potting compound. The thickness of the compound varies from 10 to 20 mils, except at the bottom, where it is 20 to 30 mils thick. Pressure test results are discussed.

Technical assistance for law-enforcement communications: Case study report two

Two case histories are presented. In one study the feasibility of consolidating dispatch center operations for small agencies is considered. System load measurements were taken and queueing analysis applied to determine numbers of personnel required for each separate agency and for a consolidated dispatch center. Functional requirements were developed and a cost model was designed to compare relative costs of various alternatives including continuation of the present system, consolidation of a manual system, and consolidated computer-aided dispatching. The second case history deals with the consideration of a multi-regional, intrastate radio frequency for improved interregional communications. Sample standards and specifications for radio equipment are provided.

Manufacturing methods of a composite cell case for a Ni-Cd battery

Basic manufacturing method refinements for using graphite epoxy material for a nickel cadmium battery cell case were performed to demonstrate production feasibility. The various facets of production scale-up, i.e., process and tooling development, together with material and process control, were integrated into a comprehensive manufacturing process that assures production reproducibility and product uniformity. Test results substantiate that a battery cell case produced from graphite epoxy pre-impregnated material, utilizing the internal pressure bag fabrication method, is feasible.

Relativistic blast waves in two dimensions. I - The adiabatic case

Approximate solutions are presented for the dynamical evolution of strong adiabatic relativistic blast waves which result from a point explosion in an ambient gas in which the density varies both with distance from the explosion center and with polar angle in axisymmetry. Solutions are analytical or quasi-analytical for the extreme relativistic case and numerical for the arbitrarily relativistic case. Some general properties of nonplanar relativistic shocks are also discussed, including the incoherence of spherical ultrarelativistic blast-wave fronts on angular scales greater than the reciprocal of the shock Lorentz factor, as well as the conditions for producing blast-wave acceleration.

Identifiability of unknown noise covariance matrices for some special cases of a linear, time-invariant, discrete-time dynamic system

Two off-line schemes are proposed for the identification of unknown noise covariance matrices Q and R of a discrete-time dynamic system. The first scheme is based on a maximum a posteriori cost function utilizing smoothed state estimates, while the second is based on a maximum likelihood cost function utilizing filtered state estimates. Sensitivity of the cost functions to Q and R is analyzed for the following cases: (1) single-input single-output systems; (2) multiinput single-output systems; and (3) single-input multioutput systems with a diagonal R. Identifiability criteria are presented for the cases considered and demonstrated by examples.

Worst case earth charging environment

The Applications Technology Satellite-6 (ATS-6) geosynchronous satellite charged up to -2200 V in sunlight on day 178, 1974. This event, being the highest known spacecraft charging event in sunlight, is used to estimate a worst case geosynchronous plasma environment for predicting the spacecraft potential in eclipse. The advantage of using this sunlight spectrum as opposed to an eclipse case is that the ion and electron fluxes to the detectors are shifted only slightly due to the spacecraft potential. After correcting the available data for satellite potential and missing data above 81 KeV, it is found that the plasma can be characterized by a single Maxwellian approximation having an electron density of 1.22/cu cm, electron temperature of 16 KeV, hydrogen ion density of 0.24/cu cm, and hydrogen ion temperature of 29 KeV. In eclipse the spacecraft would have charged up to -28 kV, the highest estimated potential to date in the earth's plasma environment.
