Inclusive breakup cross sections in reactions induced by the nuclides 6 He and 6,7 Li in the two-body cluster model

Calculations of inclusive α particle production are performed to interpret reaction experimental data induced by the two-neutron halo 6He and the isotopes 6,7 Li on different target nuclei. In this work, we have implemented the zero-range post-form DWBA to compute the elastic and nonelastic breakup cross sections. Integrated cross sections, angular distributions and spectra are presented. Projectiles are approximated as two-body clusters, namely 6 He as α+dineutron and 6 Li ( 7 Li) are interpreted as α+deuteron(triton). The São Paulo optical potential is employed in the calculation of the distorted wave functions for the incident channels, while standard phenomenological interactions are taken for the fragment-target interactions. Calculations for 6 Li and 7 Li furnish a good description of the data, while the reaction involving 6 He is found to be more complicated, where interpretation of the data must still be considered incomplete. The present analysis identifies an overall large contribution from inclusive breakup emission for all the cases studied.

Measurement of vector boson production cross sections and their ratios using pp collisions at s = 13.6 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Fiducial and total W± and Z boson cross sections, their ratios and the ratio of top-antitop-quark pair and W-boson fiducial cross sections are measured in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13.6 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 29 fb−1 of data collected in 2022 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The measured fiducial cross-section values for W+→ℓ+ν, W−→ℓ−ν¯, and Z→ℓ+ℓ− (ℓ=e or μ) boson productions are 4250±150 pb, 3310±120 pb, and 744±20 pb, respectively, where the uncertainty is the total uncertainty, including that arising from the luminosity of about 2.2%. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in αs, next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and next-to-leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Measurements of the Higgs boson production cross section and couplings in the W boson pair decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V} $

Production cross sections of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {Te\hspace{-.08em}V}$. The analysis targets Higgs bosons produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson. Candidate events are required to have at least two charged leptons and moderate missing transverse momentum, targeting events with at least one leptonically decaying W boson originating from the Higgs boson. Results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential cross sections in the simplified template cross section framework, as well as couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions. The data set collected by the CMS detector during 2016–2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$. The signal strength modifier $\mu $, defined as the ratio of the observed production rate in a given decay channel to the standard model expectation, is measured to be $\mu = 0.95^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$. All results are found to be compatible with the standard model within the uncertainties.

Vacuum-ultraviolet absorption cross-sections of functionalized cyclic hydrocarbons: Five-membered rings

Cross-sections were measured at 50 °C and 800 Torr using differential absorption spectroscopy in the vacuum-ultraviolet from 5.17 – 9.92 eV for a series of five-membered cyclic hydrocarbons: cyclopentane, cyclopentene, methylcyclopentane, tetrahydrofuran, furan, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, 2,3-dihydro-5-methylfuran, tetrahydrofuran-3-one, 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane, cyclopentanol, 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran, cyclopentanone, 2-cyclopenten-1-one, 3-cyclopenten-1-one, 2-methylcyclopentan-1-one, 2-methylcyclopent-2-en-1-one, 1,2-epoxycyclopentane, 2,3-epoxycyclopentanone, and 3,4-epoxycyclopentanone. The majority of the species are functionalized and are directly related to chain-reactions relevant to combustion, such as substituted cyclic ethers and cycloalkenes. Uncertainty calculations were conducted as a function of photon energy to quantify errors associated with experimental repeatability, signal-to-noise ratio, and gas-phase concentration, yielding an upper limit of 5% in spectral regions where absorption is >2%. Here, the primary objective of the present work is to provide quantitative absorption cross-sections of species commonly produced in combustion reactions. Comparing qualitative differences among the five-membered cyclic species, in order to analyze the effect of functional groups on absorption, is a secondary objective. The majority of the spectra are reported for the first time and enable quantitative isomer-resolved speciation measurements in combustion chemistry.

Measurement of multidifferential cross sections for dijet production in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the dijet production cross section is reported based on proton–proton collision data collected in 2016 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 36.3 fb –1 . Jets are reconstructed with the anti-$k$ T algorithm for distance parameters of R = 0.4 and 0.8. Cross sections are measured double-differentially (2D) as a function of the largest absolute rapidity |y| max of the two jets with the highest transverse momenta $p$ T and their invariant mass $m$ 1,2 , and triple-differentially (3D) as a function of the rapidity separation $y$*, the total boost $y$ b , and either $m$ 1,2 or the average $p$ T of the two jets. The cross sections are unfolded to correct for detector effects and are compared with fixed-order calculations derived at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The impact of the measurements on the parton distribution functions and the strong coupling constant at the mass of the Z boson is investigated, yielding a value of $α$ S ($m$ Z ) = 0.1179 ± 0.0019.

Measurement of the t-channel single top quark cross section in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV

The single top quark t-channel production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV, using data recorded with the CMS detector in 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb −1 , and resulting in the first CMS measurement of the process at that energy. Events with one electron or muon and two or more jets, among which at least one is identified as originating from a b quark fragmentation, are analyzed. The combined cross section of single top quark (tq) and single top antiquark ($\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}$) production is $\sigma \left(\mathrm{tq}+\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}\right)={25.5}_{-3.5}^{+3.6}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-3.9}^{+4.2}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.5\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb. The individual cross sections are measured to be $\sigma \left(\mathrm{tq}\right)={17.7}_{-2.7}^{+2.9}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.4}^{+2.6}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb and $\sigma \left(\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}\right)={6.7}_{-1.6}^{+2.4}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.5}^{+2.1}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.1\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb. Their ratio is measured to be ${\mathcal{R}}_{\mathrm{t}-\mathrm{ch}}={2.7}_{-0.8}^{+1.5}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.3}^{+1.2}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)$. The absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element is found to be |f LV V tb | = 0.92 ± 0.09(exp) ± 0.01(theo). The measurements are in good agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics.

Measurements and interpretations of W ± Z production cross-sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of integrated and differential cross-sections for W ± Z production in proton-proton collisions are presented. The data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . The W ± Z candidate events are reconstructed using leptonic decay modes of the gauge bosons into electrons or muons. The integrated cross-section per lepton flavour for the production of W ± Z is measured in the detector fiducial region with a relative precision of 4%. The measured value is compared with the Standard Model prediction at a precision of up to next-to-next-to-leading-order in QCD and next-to-leading-order in electroweak. Cross-sections for W + Z and W − Z production and their ratio are presented. The W ± Z production is also measured differentially as functions of various kinematic variables, including new observables sensitive to CP-violation effects. All measurements are compared with state-of-the-art Standard Model predictions from fixed-order calculations or Monte Carlo generators based on next-to-leading-order matrix elements interfaced with parton showers. An effective field theory interpretation of the measurements is performed, considering both CP-conserving and CP-violating dimension-6 operators modifying the W ± Z production. In the absence of observed deviations from the Standard Model, limits on CP-conserving Wilson coefficients are extracted using the transverse mass of the W ± Z system. For CP-violating coefficients a machine learning approach is used to construct an observable with enhanced sensitivity to CP-violation effects.

Measurement of the production cross section for a W boson in association with a charm quark in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\hbox {TeV}$

The strange quark content of the proton is probed through the measurement of the production cross section for a W boson and a charm (c) quark in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm jets are tagged using the presence of a muon or a secondary vertex inside the jet. The $\hbox {W}+\hbox {c}$ production cross section and the cross section ratio $R_\textrm{c}^{\pm }= \sigma ({\hbox {W}}^{+}+\bar{\text {c}})/\sigma (\hbox {W}^{-}+{\textrm{c}})$ are measured inclusively and differentially as functions of the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the lepton originating from the W boson decay. The precision of the measurements is improved with respect to previous studies, reaching 1% in $R_\textrm{c}^{\pm }= 0.950 \pm 0.005\,\text {(stat)} \pm 0.010 \,\text {(syst)} $. The measurements are compared with theoretical predictions up to next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Micropillar Compression of Additively Manufactured 316L Stainless Steels after 2 MeV Proton Irradiation: A Comparison Study between Planar and Cross-Sectional Micropillars

A micropillar compression study with two different techniques was performed on proton-irradiated additively manufactured (AM) 316L stainless steels. The sample was irradiated at 360 °C using 2 MeV protons to 1.8 average displacement per atom (dpa) in the near-surface region. A comparison study with mechanical test and microstructure characterization was made between planar and cross-sectional pillars prepared from the irradiated surface. While a 2 MeV proton irradiation creates a relatively flat damage zone up to 12 µm, the dpa gradient by a factor of 2 leads to significant dpa uncertainty along the pillar height direction for the conventional planar technique. Cross-sectional pillars can significantly reduce such dpa uncertainty. From one single sample, three cross-sectional pillars were able to show dpa-dependent hardening. Furthermore, post-compression transmission electron microscopy allows the determination of the deformation mechanism of individual micropillars. Cross-sectional micropillar compression can be used to study radiation-induced mechanical property changes with better resolution and less data fluctuation.

From light neutrino decay phenomenology to muon neutrino cross-section measurement at MINERvA experiment

This thesis tackles two essential topics of neutrino physics: neutrino decay and neutrino cross-section measurement. First, the invisible and visible neutrino decay is analyzed through a phenomenological approach, considering future long-baseline neutrino experiments such as DUNE and a hypothetical neutrino beam toward the ANDES laboratory. The study takes into account the ν μ and ν e disappearance and appearance, respectively, for both FHC and RHC flux modes. The results showed a negligible matter effect for DUNE but significantly more notable at ANDES. At 90% C.L., the sensitivity to the decay parameter α3 can be as small as 2 × 10 -6 eV 2 for a chosen coupling. The impact of neutrino decay in the determination of θ 23 and δ CP were also shown. Second, the double-differential cross-section measurement for ν μ -carbon interactions with three-momentum transfer |$\vec{q}$| < 1.2 GeV obtained with medium energy exposures in the NuMI beam at MINERvA experiment are reported. The measurement is presented as a function of |$\vec{q}$| and E avail and reviews different interaction models and nuclear effects along quasi-elastic to resonance processes to define a new model for a better agreement. The double differential cross sections are compared to the MnvTunes, GENIE, and NuWro predictions.

Cross sections for the 54 Fe(n, n′) 54 Fe and 54 Fe(n, p′) 54 Mn reactions deduced from the detection of de-excitation γ rays

γ-ray production cross sections have been deduced for reactions with incident neutrons having energies from 1.5 - 4.7 MeV. Similar measurements were made on a natural Ti sample to establish an absolute normalization. The resulting γ-ray production cross sections are compared to TENDL and TALYS calculations, as well as data from previous measurements. The models are found to describe the production cross sections for most γ rays observed from 54Mn and 54Fe rather well.

Reaction dynamics and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross section with 12 C+ 1 H at 95 MeV/nucleon

Reaction dynamics and effective in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross section are studied, using the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) model with one of the simplest heavy ion collisions, 12 C+ ⁢1 H. The roles of different stochastic processes are studied, which are installed in the original AMD. One is the diffusion process as a part of the quantum fluctuation originated from the Fermi motion during the time evolution of the wave packets in the mean field (AMD/D). The second is a coalescence treatment for light clusters with A ≤ 8 (AMD/D-COALS). The third is the collision process, installed in AMD with different form of the in-medium NN cross sections. These different processes are examined, using the experimental angular distributions and energy spectra of light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments. The effective in-medium NN cross sections are evaluated from the simulated AMD events and compared with the experimentally extracted values. A good agreement is obtained between the AMD values from the 12 C + 1 H reaction at 95 MeV/nucleon and the experimental results for nuclear matter.

Elastic cross section is entanglement entropy

We present universal relations between entanglement entropy, which quantifies the quantum correlation between subsystems, and the cross section, which is the primary observable for high-energy particle scattering, by employing a careful formulation of wave packets for the incoming particles. For 2-to-2 elastic scattering with no initial entanglement and subdividing the system along particle labels, we show that both the Rényi and Tsallis entropies in the final states are directly proportional to the elastic cross section in units of the transverse size for the initial wave packets, which is then interpreted as the elastic scattering probability. The relations do not depend on the underlying dynamics of the quantum field theory and are valid to all orders in coupling strengths. Furthermore, computing quantum correlations between momentum and nonkinematic data leads to entanglement entropies expressed as various semi-inclusive elastic cross sections. Our result gives rise to a novel “area law” for entanglement entropy in a two-body system. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

First results on nucleon resonance electroexcitation amplitudes from ep → e'π + π – p' cross sections at W = 1.4–1.7 GeV and Q 2 = 2.0–5.0 GeV 2

The electroexcitation amplitudes or $\gamma_vpN^*$ electrocouplings of the $N(1440)1/2^+$, $N(1520)3/2^-$, and $\Delta(1600)3/2^+$ resonances were obtained for the first time from the $ep \to e'\pi^+\pi^-p'$ differential cross sections measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab within the range of invariant mass $W$ of the final state hadrons from 1.4–1.7~GeV for photon virtualities $Q^2$ from 2.0--5.0~GeV$^2$. A good description of the nine independent one-fold differential $\gamma_v p\to \pi^+\pi^-p'$ cross sections achieved within the data-driven Jefferson Lab-Moscow State University (JM) meson-baryon reaction model in each bin of ($W$,$Q^2$) allows for separation of the resonant and non-resonant contributions. The electrocouplings were determined in the fits of the $\pi^+\pi^-p$ cross sections within three overlapping $W$ intervals with a substantial contribution from each of the three resonances listed above. Consistent results on the electrocouplings extracted from the data in these $W$ intervals provide evidence for their reliable extraction. These studies extend information on the electrocouplings of the $N(1440)1/2^+$ and $N(1520)3/2^-$ available from this channel over a broader range of $Q^2$. The electrocouplings of the $\Delta(1600)3/2^+$, which decays preferentially into $\pi\pi N$ final states, have been determined for the first time. Here, the reliable extraction of the electrocouplings for these states is also supported by the description of the $\pi^+\pi^-p$ differential cross sections with $Q^2$-independent masses and total/partial hadronic decay widths into the $\pi\Delta$ and $\rho p$ final states.

Measurement of the Mo 100 ( α , x n ) cross section at weak r -process energies

Here, the weak r process in neutrino-driven winds following a core-collapse supernova is thought to contribute to the cosmic abundances of the first r-process peak elements between Se and Ag. Sensitivity studies have found that the early nucleosynthesis in the weak r process is primarily driven by (α, xn) reactions due to the high temperatures, and that current nuclear physics uncertainties in the (α, xn) rates result in significant uncertainties of the calculated abundances. The weak r-process path proceeds several nuclei away from stability where (α, xn) reaction cross sections have not yet been measured. In this paper we report the 100 Mo (α, xn) cross section (between 8.9 and 13.2 MeV in the center of mass, corresponding to 3.5–6.8 GK) in inverse kinematics using the Multi-Sampling Ionization Chamber (MUSIC) detector at the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) facility. With this first measurement of the 100 Mo (α, xn) cross section, we have demonstrated the ability of MUSIC to measure (α, xn) cross sections for A up to 100, therefore paving the way for further measurements with radioactive beams at ATLAS or the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams.

Cross section measurement of e + e − → η ψ ( 2 S ) and search for e + e − → η X ˜ ( 3872 )

Measurement of the inclusive and differential Higgs boson production cross sections in the leptonic WW decay mode at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

Measurements of the fiducial inclusive and differential production cross sections of the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV are performed using events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of W bosons that subsequently decay into a final state with an electron, a muon, and a pair of neutrinos. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$. Production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the Higgs boson and the associated jet multiplicity. The Higgs boson signal is extracted and simultaneously unfolded to correct for selection efficiency and resolution effects using maximum-likelihood fits to the observed distributions in data. The integrated fiducial cross section is measured to be 86.5 ± 9.5 fb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 82.5 ± 4.2 fb. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectations is observed in the differential measurements.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurements of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W}$ differential cross sections and the leptonic charge asymmetry at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

Measurements of properties of top quark-antiquark pair production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV are presented, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Events are selected based on the presence of either two leptons with the same electric charge or three leptons, and multiple jets and b-tagged jets. We present measurements of differential production cross sections as a function of kinematic variables sensitive to different aspects of the process modeling, using a multivariate discriminator in the two-lepton selection region and a simple selection-based method in the three-lepton region. The normalized cross section measurements are generally consistent with the standard model expectations, while we observe larger values compared to the expectations in the absolute cross section measurements, consistent with previous inclusive cross section measurements. In addition, we measure the leptonic charge asymmetry of this process, obtaining an observed value of ${A}_c^{\ell }=-{0.19}_{-0.18}^{+0.16}$, consistent with the expectation of −0.085 ± 0.006 predicted by next-to-leading order simulations.
