A low-energy perspective on the minimal left-right symmetric model

We perform a global analysis of the low-energy phenomenology of the minimal left-right symmetric model (mLRSM) with parity symmetry. We match the mLRSM to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory Lagrangian at the left-right-symmetry breaking scale and perform a comprehensive fit to low-energy data including mesonic, neutron, and nuclear β -decay processes, Δ F = 1 and Δ F = 2 CP-even and -odd processes in the bottom and strange sectors, and electric dipole moments (EDMs) of nucleons, nuclei, and atoms. We fit the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa and mLRSM parameters simultaneously and determine a lower bound on the mass of the right-handed W R boson. In models where a Peccei-Quinn mechanism provides a solution to the strong CP problem, we obtain $ {M}_{W_R} $ ≳ 5 . 5 TeV at 95% C.L. which can be significantly improved with next-generation EDM experiments. In the P -symmetric mLRSM without a Peccei-Quinn mechanism we obtain a more stringent constraint $ {M}_{W_R} $ ≳ 17 TeV at 95% C.L., which is difficult to improve with low-energy measurements alone. In all cases, the additional scalar fields of the mLRSM are required to be a few times heavier than the right-handed gauge bosons. We consider a recent discrepancy in tests of first-row unitarity of the CKM matrix. We find that, while TeV-scale W R bosons can alleviate some of the tension found in the V ud,us determinations, a solution to the discrepancy is disfavored when taking into account other low-energy observables within the mLRSM.

Electroweak corrections to the Charm-Top-Quark Contribution to ϵ K

We calculate the leading-logarithmic and next-to-leading-logarithmic electroweak corrections to the charm-top-quark contribution to the effective |ΔS| = 2 Lagrangian, relevant for the parameter ϵ K . We find that these corrections lead to a –0.5% shift in the corresponding Wilson coefficient. Moreover, our calculation removes an implicit ambiguity in the standard-model prediction of ϵ K , by fixing the renormalization scheme of the electroweak input parameters.

Search for solar axions produced through the axion-electron coupling gae using a new GridPix detector at CAST

We present a search for solar axions produced through the axion-electron coupling (g ae ) using data from a novel 7-GridPix detector installed at the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST). The detector, featuring ultra-thin silicon nitride windows and multiple veto systems, collected approximately 160 hours of solar tracking data between 2017–2018. Using machine learning techniques and the veto systems, we achieved a background rate of 1.06 × 10 −5 keV −1 cm −2 s −1 at a signal efficiency of about 80% in the 0.2 to 8 keV range. Analysis of the data yielded no significant excess above background, allowing us to set a new upper limit on the product of the axion-electron and axion-photon couplings of g ae · g aγ < 7.35 × 10 −23 GeV −1 at 95% confidence level for axion masses below 10 meV. This result improves upon the previous best helioscope limit and demonstrates the potential of GridPix technology for rare event searches. Additionally, we derived a limit on the axion-photon coupling of g aγ < 9.0 × 10 −11 GeV −1 at 95% CL, which, while not surpassing CAST’s best limit, provides complementary constraints on axion models.

On the Magnitudes of some CKM Matrix Elements

This write-up follows the presentation at the symposium, with emphasis on topics and ideas discussed there. It is purposefully informal, not a review of the field, and neither does it include a complete list of references. However, I hope that readers might find somwe comments useful or amusing, and may appreciate the challenges and reasons for excitement about recent progress and future opportunities in flavor physics.

Measurement of the 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 + → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 0 decays at Belle II

We measure the 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 + → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 0 decays reconstructed in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collisions at the Belle II experiment using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 428 fb −1 . A control sample of 𝐷 + → 𝜋 + ⁢𝐾$^0_𝑆$ decays is used to correct for detection and production asymmetries. The result 𝐴 𝐶⁢𝑃 ⁡(𝐷 + → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 0 ) = (−1.8 ± 0.9 ± 0.1)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise determination to date. It agrees with the prediction of 𝐶⁢𝑃 symmetry from the standard model and with results of previous measurements.

Measurement of the time-integrated 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$ decays using opposite-side flavor tagging at Belle and Belle II

We measure the time-integrated 𝐶⁢𝑃 asymmetry in 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$ decays reconstructed in 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → $c\bar{c}$ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 and 428 fb −1 , respectively. To infer the flavor of the 𝐷 0 meson, we exploit the correlation between the flavor of the reconstructed decay and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → $c\bar{c}$ event. This results in a sample which is independent from any other previously used at Belle or Belle II. The result, 𝐴 𝐶⁢𝑃 ⁡(𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$𝐾$^{0}_{S}$)=(1.3±2.0±0.2)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is consistent with previous determinations and with 𝐶⁢𝑃 symmetry.

Toward the determination of 𝐶⁢𝑃-odd pion-nucleon couplings

The nucleon matrix elements (NMEs) associated with quark chromomagnetic dipole moments (cMDMs) play a crucial role in determining the 𝐶𝑃-odd pion-nucleon couplings induced by quark chromoelectric dipole moments. In recent years, it has been argued that the NMEs of cMDMs can be related to the third moment of the nucleon's higher-twist (specifically, twist-3) parton distribution function (PDF) 𝑒⁡(𝑥), which can, in principle, be measured through dihadron production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes. By applying the spin-flavor expansion to the cMDM operators in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit, where 𝑁 𝑐 is the number of quark colors, we show that the NMEs receive contributions not only from the twist-3 PDF 𝑒⁡(𝑥) but also from an additional, previously neglected nucleon form factor. Incorporating constraints from the spin-flavor expansion, recent experimental data on 𝑒⁡(𝑥), as well as model calculations of 𝑒⁡(𝑥), we estimate the NMEs of the cMDM operators. Our analysis indicates that the NMEs are dominated by the nucleon form factors, and the cMDM contributions to pion-nucleon couplings can be comparable to those from the quark sigma terms.
