Indirect adaptive stabilization of a large, flexible, spinning spacering Simulation studies

A recently formulated approach to the adaptive control of distributed systems combines the simultaneous identification and control philosophy of indirect adaptive control with a modal expansion description of distributed systems. The regulation of a large, flexible, spinning spacering, one half of a dual momentum control device proposed for attitude control of large space systems, provides the example upon which the capabilities of such a synthesis method are tested via simulation.

On the controllability of a long flexible beam in orbit

The equations of planar motion for a long, flexible free-free beam in orbit are developed and include the effects of gravity-gradient torques and control torques resulting from actuators assumed to be located at specific points along the beam. The control devices are used to control both the orientation as well as the shape of the beam. Application of two classes of theorems to the linearized form of these equations is used to establish necessary and sufficient conditions for controllability for different combinations of number/location of actuators with the number of modes contained in the mathematical model. It is seen that the number of actuators, if properly located, can be less than the number of modes in the system model. A numerical example illustrates the controlled response to an initial perturbation in both pitch angle as well as beam shape.

Analysis of optically controlled microwave/millimeter-wave device structures

The light-induced voltage and the change in the source-to-drain channel current under optical illumination higher than the semiconductor bandgap for GaAs MESFET, InP MESFET, Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) and GaAs permeable base transistor (PBT) were analytically obtained. The GaAs PBT and GaAs MESFET have much higher sensitivity than InP MESFET. The Al0.3Ga0.7As/GaAs HEMT is observed to have the highest sensitivity. Variation in device parasitics due to optical illumination and its effect on the cutoff frequencies f sub T and f sub max are also investigated.

The dynamics and control of the Space Station polar platform

The Space Station polar platform will carry a variety of earth observation instruments for NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In this paper, the asymmetrical platform is modeled as three connected rigid bodies. A generalized angular momentum equation is employed to derive the rotational equations of motion. These equations are linearized and used for preliminary sizing of control devices using a classical control approach. Two control systems are considered to stabilize the platform and satisfy the pointing requirements. The first system is composed of a single variable-speed, double-gimbaled momentum wheel and the second consists of three-reaction wheels. The performance of each system is assessed using a linear optimal control approach.

Vortical Flows Research Program of the Fluid Dynamics Research Branch

The research interests of the staff of the Fluid Dynamics Research Branch in the general area of vortex flows are summarized. A major factor in the development of enchanced maneuverability and reduced drag by aerodynamic means is the use of effective vortex control devices. The key to control is the use of emerging computational tools for predicting viscous fluid flow in close coordination with fundamental experiments. In fact, the extremely complex flow fields resulting from numerical solutions to boundary value problems based on the Navier-Stokes equations requires an intimate relationship between computation and experiment. The field of vortex flows is important in so many practical areas that a concerted effort in this area is justified. A brief background of the research activity undertaken is presented, including a proposed classification of the research areas. The classification makes a distinction between issues related to vortex formation and structure, and work on vortex interactions and evolution. Examples of current research results are provided, along with references where available. Based upon the current status of research and planning, speculation on future research directions of the group is also given.

Addressable test matrix for measuring analog transfer characteristics of test elements used for integrated process control and device evaluation

A set of addressable test structures, each of which uses addressing schemes to access individual elements of the structure in a matrix, is used to test the quality of a wafer before integrated circuits produced thereon are diced, packaged and subjected to final testing. The electrical characteristic of each element is checked and compared to the electrical characteristic of all other like elements in the matrix. The effectiveness of the addressable test matrix is in readily analyzing the electrical characteristics of the test elements and in providing diagnostic information.

Remotely controllable actuating device

An actuating device can change a position of an active member that remains in substantially the same position in the absence of a force of a predetermined magnitude on the active member. The actuating device comprises a shape-memory alloy actuating member for exerting a force when actuated by changing the temperature thereof, which shape-memory alloy actuating member has a portion for connection to the active member for exerting thereon a force having a magnitude at least as large as the predetermined magnitude for moving the active member to a desired position. Actuation circuitry is provided for actuating the shape-memory alloy actuating member by changing the temperature thereof only for the time necessary to move the active member to the desired position. The invention is particularly useful for changing the position of a camber-adjusting tab on a helicopter rotor blade by using two shape-memory alloy members that can act against each other to adjust dynamic properties of the rotor blade as it is rotating.

Control of unsteady separated flow associated with the dynamic stall of airfoils

A unique active flow-control device is proposed for the control of unsteady separated flow associated with the dynamic stall of airfoils. The device is an adaptive-geometry leading-edge which will allow controlled, dynamic modification of the leading-edge profile of an airfoil while the airfoil is executing an angle-of-attack pitch-up maneuver. A carbon-fiber composite skin has been bench tested, and a wind tunnel model is under construction. A baseline parameter study of compressible dynamic stall was performed for flow over an NACA 0012 airfoil. Parameters included Mach number, pitch rate, pitch history, and boundary layer tripping. Dynamic stall data were recorded via point-diffraction interferometry and the interferograms were analyzed with in-house developed image processing software. A new high-speed phase-locked photographic image recording system was developed for real-time documentation of dynamic stall.

Robust Fuzzy Controllers Using FPGAs

Electro-mechanical device controllers typically come in one of three forms, proportional (P), Proportional Derivative (PD), and Proportional Integral Derivative (PID). Two methods of control are discussed in this paper; they are (1) the classical technique that requires an in-depth mathematical use of poles and zeros, and (2) the fuzzy logic (FL) technique that is similar to the way humans think and make decisions. FL controllers are used in multiple industries; examples include control engineering, computer vision, pattern recognition, statistics, and data analysis. Presented is a study on the development of a PD motor controller written in very high speed hardware description language (VHDL), and implemented in FL. Four distinct abstractions compose the FL controller, they are the fuzzifier, the rule-base, the fuzzy inference system (FIS), and the defuzzifier. FL is similar to, but different from, Boolean logic; where the output value may be equal to 0 or 1, but it could also be equal to any decimal value between them. This controller is unique because of its VHDL implementation, which uses integer mathematics. To compensate for VHDL's inability to synthesis floating point numbers, a scale factor equal to 10(sup (N/4) is utilized; where N is equal to data word size. The scaling factor shifts the decimal digits to the left of the decimal point for increased precision. PD controllers are ideal for use with servo motors, where position control is effective. This paper discusses control methods for motion-base platforms where a constant velocity equivalent to a spectral resolution of 0.25 cm(exp -1) is required; however, the control capability of this controller extends to various other platforms.

Magnetic field control

A torque control for an electromechanical torquing device of a type where a variable clearance occurs between a rotor and field is described. A Hall effect device senses the field present, which would vary as a function of spacing between field and rotor. The output of the Hall effect device controls the power applied to the field so as to provide a well defined field and thus a controlled torque to the rotor which is well defined.

Improved Flow-Controlling Vortex Generator

Symmetrical tangential streams control flow of radial primary streams. Vortex generator uses small secondary stream of fluid to control normally-larger primary stream. Improved version of vortex generator described in "Variable Control Port for Fluidic Control Device," (NPO-16603). Secondary, or control, flows entering tangentially through diametrically opposite ports set up swirling motion restraining primary flow. Pressure of secondary fluid in relation to primary fluid controlling factor. Like valve, vortex generator varies rate of flow of primary fluid from maximum value down to zero. When properly designed, requires low pressure differential between primary and secondary streams and expends relatively small amount of secondary fluid.
