Search for an axion-like particle in radiative $J/ψ$ decays

We search for an axion-like particle (ALP) a through the process $\psi$(3686) → π + π – J/$\psi$, J/$\psi$ → γa, a → γγ in a data sample of (2.71 ± 0.01) x 10 9 $\psi$(3686) events collected by the BESIII detector. No significant ALP signal is observed over the expected background, and the upper limits on the branching fraction of the decay J/$\psi$ → γa and the ALP-photon coupling constant g aγγ are set at 95% confidence level in the mass range of 0.165 ≤ m a ≤ 2.84 GeV/c 2 . The limits on $\mathscr{B}$(J/$\psi$ → γa) range from 8.3 x 10 –8 to 1.8 x 10 –6 over the search region, and the constraints on the ALP-photon coupling are the most stringent to date for 0.165 ≤ m a ≤ 1.468 GeV/c 2 .

Searching for the axion-like particle at the EIC*

Abstract The axion-like particle (ALP) is a well motivated new particle candidate for beyond the standard model. In this study, we propose to probe the ALP via photon fusion scattering at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) with electron and proton energies of and , respectively. We can constrain the effective coupling strength between the ALP and photons to be at the confidence level with an integrated luminosity of for the mass range . Such bounds may be significantly improved if we consider the nucleus beam at the EIC. We also demonstrate that the limits from the EIC can be stronger than the off Z -pole measurement at the LEP and light-by-light scattering with pp collisions at the LHC.

On the use of dielectric elements in axion searches with microwave resonant cavities

This study explores the primary effects of dielectric materials in a resonant cavity-based search for axion dark matter. While dielectrics prove beneficial in numerous cases, their incorporation may lead to less-than-optimal performance, especially for the lowest TM mode. Additionally, the stronger confinement of the electric field inside the dielectrics can exacerbate mode mixings, in particular for higher-order modes. Case studies have been carried out using a combination of analytical solutions and numerical simulations. The findings indicate dielectric cavities employing the TM 010 mode experience a significant reduction in sensitivity when compared to a similar search conducted in a cavity at equivalent frequency using no dielectrics.

Relaxation times for Bose-Einstein condensation in axion miniclusters

We study the Bose condensation of scalar dark matter in the presence of both gravitational and self-interactions. Axions and other scalar dark matter in gravitationally bound miniclusters or dark matter halos are expected to condense into Bose-Einstein condensates called Bose stars. This process has been shown to occur through attractive self-interactions of the axionlike particles or through the field’s self gravitation. We show that in the high-occupancy regime of scalar dark matter, the Boltzmann collision integral does not describe either gravitational or self-interactions, and derive kinetic equations valid for these interactions. We use this formalism to compute relaxation times for the Bose-Einstein condensation, and find that condensation into Bose stars could occur within the lifetime of the Universe. The self-interactions reduce the condensation time only when they are very strong.

Axion constraints from quiescent soft gamma-ray emission from magnetars

We report axion-like-particles (ALPs) emitted from the core of a magnetar can convert to photons in its magnetosphere. The resulting photon flux is sensitive to the product of (i) the ALP-nucleon coupling G an which controls the production cross section in the core and (ii) the ALP-photon coupling g aγγ which controls the conversion in the magnetosphere. We study such emissions in the soft-gamma-ray range (300 keV to 1 MeV), where the ALP spectrum peaks and astrophysical backgrounds from resonant Compton up scattering are expected to be suppressed. Using published quiescent soft-gamma-ray flux upper limits in five magnetars obtained with CGRO COMPTEL and INTEGRAL SPI/IBIS/ISGRI, we put limits on the product of the ALP-nucleon and ALP-photon couplings. We also provide a detailed study of the dependence of our results on the magnetar core temperature. We further show projections of our result for future Fermi-GBM observations. Our results motivate a program of studying quiescent soft-gamma-ray emission from magnetars with the Fermi-GBM.

Rydberg-atom-based single-photon detection for haloscope axion searches

We propose a Rydberg-atom-based single-photon detector for signal readout in dark matter haloscope experiments between 40 μ eV and 200 μ eV (10 GHz and 50 GHz). At these frequencies, standard haloscope readout using linear amplifiers is limited by quantum measurement noise, which can be avoided by using a single-photon detector. Our single-photon detection scheme can offer scan rate enhancements up to a factor of 10 4 over traditional linear amplifier readout, and is compatible with many different haloscope cavities. We identify multiple haloscope designs that could use our Rydberg-atom-based single-photon detector to search for QCD axions with masses above 40 μ eV (10 GHz), currently a minimally explored parameter space. Apparent 𝑤 <−1 and a Lower 𝑆 8 from Dark Axion and Dark Baryons Interactions

We show that a simple coupling between dark energy and dark matter can simultaneously address two distinct hints at new physics coming from cosmological observations. The first is the recent evidence from the DESI project and supernovae observations that the dark energy equation of state w is evolving over cosmic time from an earlier value that is <-1 to a present-day value >-1. The second observation is the so-called S8 tension, describing the suppression of the growth of matter overdensities compared to that expected in the ΛCDM model. Here, we propose a stable, technically natural particle physics implementation of this idea, in which dark matter consists of dark baryons in a strongly coupled hidden sector, and the dark energy field is the associated dark axion. The time variation of the dark matter mass results in an effective dark energy equation of state that exhibits a phantom crossing behavior consistent with recent results. It also results in a slight delay in matter-radiation equality, which suppresses the overall growth of density perturbations.

Two-component axionic dark matter halos

We consider a two-component dark matter halo (DMH) of a galaxy containing ultra-light axions (ULA) of different mass. The DMH is described as a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in its ground state. In the mean-field (MF) limit, we have derived the integro-differential equations for the spherically symmetrical wave functions of the two DMH components. We studied, numerically, the radial distribution of the mass density of ULA and constructed the parameters which could be used to distinguish between the two- and one-component DMH. Here, we also discuss an interesting connection between the BEC ground state of a one-component DMH and Black Hole temperature and entropy, and Unruh temperature.

Probing Axion-Like-Particles at the CERN Gamma Factory

We report the aim of the proposed CERN Gamma Factory is to produce ≈10 17 photons per second with energies up to 400 MeV. The photon beam intensity is expected to be a factor of $\mathcal{O}$(10 7 ) larger than that of the presently available photon beams in the MeV energy range. In this work, its potential to probe physics beyond the Standard Model is explored. In particular, searches for axion like particles (ALPs) with dominant couplings to photons are discussed and various production scenarios - fixed target, photon-photon collision, and conversion by a magnetic field - and detection schemes considered - via decay to photons or back-conversion. It is found that the Gamma Factory in a fixed target mode can probe ALPs with mass m a ≲ $\mathcal{O}$(100 MeV) and decay constants larger than 10 7 GeV, improving by an order of magnitude the discovery potential of previous beam dump experiments.

Axion-like particle searches at DarkQuest

Axion-like particles (ALPs) interacting with the Standard Model can be abundantly produced in proton beam fixed-target experiments. Looking for their displaced decays is therefore an effective search strategy for ALPs with a mass in the MeV to GeV range. Focusing on the benchmark models where the ALP interacts dominantly with photons or gluons, we show that the proposed DarkQuest experiment at Fermilab will be able to test parameter space which has been previously inaccessible. We pay particular attention to the self-consistency of gluon-coupled ALP production and decay calculations, which has been recently shown to be a problem in many existing predictions. We also apply these results to explore existing constraints in the ALP parameter space.

Probing axion-like particles at the Electron-Ion Collider

Abstract The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a forthcoming powerful high-luminosity facility, represents an exciting opportunity to explore new physics. In this article, we study the potential of the EIC to probe the coupling between axion-like particles (ALPs) and photons in coherent scattering. The ALPs can be produced via photon fusion and decay back to two photons inside the EIC detector. In a prompt-decay search, we find that the EIC can set the most stringent bound form a ≲ 20 GeV and probe the effective scales Λ ≲ 10 5 GeV. In a displaced-vertex search, which requires adopting an EM calorimeter technology that provides directionality, the EIC could probe ALPs withm a ≲ 1 GeV at effective scales Λ ≲ 10 7 GeV. Combining the two search strategies, the EIC can probe a significant portion of unexplored parameter space in the 0.2 a< 20 GeV mass range.

Search for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW and axion-like particles mediating nonresonant ZZ or ZH production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search has been performed for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW and for axion-like particles (ALPs) mediating nonresonant ZZ or ZH production, in final states with two charged leptons (ℓ = e, μ) produced by the decay of a Z boson, and two quarks produced by the decay of a Z, W, or Higgs boson H. The analysis is sensitive to resonances with masses in the range 450 to 2000 GeV. Two categories are defined corresponding to the merged or resolved reconstruction of the hadronically decaying boson. The search is based on data collected during 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . No significant excess is observed in the data above the standard model background expectation. Upper limits on the production cross section of heavy, narrow spin-2 and spin-1 resonances are derived as functions of the resonance mass, and exclusion limits on the production of bulk graviton particles and W' bosons are calculated in the framework of the warped extra dimensions and heavy vector triplet models, respectively. In addition, upper limits on the ALP-mediated diboson production cross section and ALP couplings to standard model particles are obtained in the framework of linear and chiral effective field theories. These are the first limits on nonresonant ALP-mediated ZZ and ZH production obtained by the LHC experiments.

Axion-Like Particles at the ILC Giga-Z

Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) are a generic, calculable, and well motivated extension of the Standard Model with far reaching phenomenology. ALPs that couple only to hypercharge represent one subset of such models, coupling the ALP to both photons and the Z boson. We examine the current constraints on this class of models with an ALP mass in the 100 MeV to 100 GeV range, paying particular attention to the region between 100 MeV to 10 GeV, a portion of parameter space which is ill constrained by current experiments. We show that the more than 109 Z bosons produced in the Giga-Z mode of the future ILC experiment, combined with the highly granular nature of its detectors, will allow for ALPs coupled to hypercharge to be discovered with couplings down to nearly 10 –5 GeV –1 over a range of masses from 0.4 to 50 GeV.

Measurement of light-by-light scattering and the Breit-Wheeler process, and search for axion-like particles in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of light-by-light scattering (LbL, γγ → γγ) and the Breit-Wheeler process (BW, γγ → e + e − ) are reported in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 nb −1 , was collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2018. Events with an exclusively produced γγ or e + e − pair with invariant masses m γγ,ee > 5 GeV, along with other fiducial criteria, are selected. The measured BW fiducial production cross section, σ fid (γγ → e + e − ) = 263.5 ± 1.8(stat) ± 17.8(syst) μb, as well as the differential distributions for various kinematic observables, are in agreement with leading-order quantum electrodynamics predictions complemented with final-state photon radiation. The measured differential BW cross sections allow discrimination between different theoretical descriptions of the photon flux of the lead ion. In the LbL final state, 26 exclusive diphoton candidate events are observed compared with 12.0 ± 2.9 expected for the background. Combined with previous results, the observed significance of the LbL signal with respect to the background-only hypothesis is above five standard deviations. The measured fiducial LbL scattering cross section, σ fid (γγ → γγ) = 107 ± 24(stat) ± 13(syst) nb, is in agreement with next- to-leading-order predictions. Limits on the production of axion-like particles coupled to photons are set over the mass range 5–100 GeV, including the most stringent limits to date in the range of 5–10 GeV.

Expected sensitivity of the Light Dark Matter eXperiment to long-lived dark photons and axion-like particles

The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is an electron-beam fixed-target experiment primarily designed to achieve world-leading, model-independent sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter particles. LDMX aims to identify dark sector particle production through the detection of events with substantial missing energy and momentum, a signature of invisible particles escaping detection. Beyond this primary objective, LDMX offers a complementary search strategy for long-lived, visibly decaying particles, such as dark photons and axion-like particles. We present the first detailed evaluation of the ability of LDMX to identify visibly decaying, long-lived particles that couple to electrons using a detailed simulation, based on the Geant 4-toolkit, that incorporates realistic detection efficiencies and background levels. We demonstrate that LDMX can achieve a sensitivity that is competitive with other experiments that are currently running. The models explored in this paper are distinct and complementary to those probed in the LDMX flagship missing-momentum analysis. Through searching for both invisible dark matter and visibly decaying long-lived signatures, LDMX will significantly advance the search for light dark matter and provide a broad exploration of the sub-GeV dark sector.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Axion induced SUSY breaking and focus point gaugino mediation

We consider a scenario where supersymmetry breaking, its mediation, and the cancellation of the theta parameter of SU(3) C are all caused by a single chiral multiplet. The string axion multiplet is a natural candidate of such a superfield. We show that the scenario provides a convincing basis of focus point gaugino mediation, where the electroweak scale is explained with a moderate tuning among the parameters of the theory.

Search for axion-like particles through nuclear Primakoff production using the GlueX detector

We report on the results of the first search for the production of axion-like particles (ALPs) via Primakoff production on nuclear targets, γA → aA, in the “SRC-CT” experiment using the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab. This search uses an integrated luminosity of 100 pb -1 nucleon on a 12 C target with a real photon beam of energies 6 < E γ < 10.8 GeV, and explores the mass region of 200 < m a < 450 MeV via the decay a → γγ. This mass range is between the π 0 and η meson masses, which enables the use of the measured η meson production rate to obtain absolute bounds on the ALP production with reduced sensitivity to experimental luminosity and detection efficiency. We find no evidence for an ALP, consistent with previous searches in the quoted mass range, and present limits on the effective photon coupling scale of $\mathscr{O}$(1 TeV -1 ). We further find that the ALP production limit we obtain is hindered by the peaking structure of the non-target-related dominant background the in GlueX spectrometer, which we treat by using data on 4 He to estimate and subtract it. We comment on how this search can be improved in a future higher-statistics dedicated measurement.

Parity-odd and even trispectrum from axion inflation

The four-point correlation function of primordial scalar perturbations has parity-even and parity-odd contributions and the parity-odd signal in cosmological observations is opening a novel window to look for new physics in the inflationary epoch. We study the distinct parity-odd and even prediction from the axion inflation model, in which the inflaton couples to a vector field via a Chern-Simons interaction, and the vector field is considered to be either approximately massless (m A << Hubble scale H) or very massive (m A ~ H). The parity-odd signal arises due to one transverse mode of the vector field being predominantly produced during inflation. We adopt the in-in formalism to evaluate the correlation functions. Considering the vector field mode function to be dominated by its real part up to a constant phase, we simplify the formulas for numerical computations. The numerical studies show that the massive and massless vector fields give significant parity-even signals, while the parity-odd contribution is about one to two orders of magnitude smaller.
