SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Verification Manual (V.5.20)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Sierra/PMR handles the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

FY23 Simulation of Elastic-Plastic Failure Propagation

This memo summarizes the simulation of ductile failure propagation work conducted under the ASC project “V&V of Ductile Failure” conducted during FY 23. Physically, the failure propagation consists of crack propagation in the material. In the numerical setting—specifically in a finite element model—propagation can be accomplished through element death when critical conditions occur locally at an element that is then deleted from the simulation. The validation of the finite element models is evaluated by direct comparison between the experimental and simulation results regarding the rate of crack growth and its influence on the load-deflection response of the specimens tested. This work considers two geometries that display stable crack propagation under displacement-controlled conditions. The first geometry consists of hat specimens loaded in compression with nominally identical geometries but made with three different materials: Steel A286, Al 7075-T651 and 304L stainless steel. The three materials represent a range of ductility values that affect the response and crack propagation within the specimen. The crack induced propagates under an essentially mode-II type of deformation. The second geometry consists of a pre-cracked 304L stainless steel compact tension test specimen loaded so as to induce a mode-I deformation at the crack.

Advanced Simulation and Computing: FY25 Implementation Plan

The DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program (SSP) is an integrated technical program for maintaining the safety, security, and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile. The SSP incorporates nuclear test data, computational modeling and simulation, and experimental facilities to advance understanding of nuclear weapons. The suite of data analyzed comes from activities including previous nuclear tests, stockpile surveillance, experimental research, and development and engineering programs. This integrated national program requires the continued use of experimental facilities and the computational capabilities to support the SSP missions. These component parts, in addition to an appropriately scaled production capability, enable NNSA to support stockpile requirements. The ultimate goal of the SSP, and thus of the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program, is to ensure that the U.S. maintains a safe, secure, and effective strategic deterrent.

HPC Center of the Future: R&D Acquisition Intent

This document contains intended technical requirements for an anticipated future procurement for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), hereafter referred to as “LLNL” or “the Laboratory”, which seeks to fund a few new and innovative proposals for developing concepts and performing studies that would lead to products available in the 2029-2030 timeframe. Our interest is to incentivize explorations and evaluations of technical capabilities in support of our vision for a High Performance Computing (HPC) center of the future at Livermore Computing (LC), the HPC center at LLNL. To realize this vision a new approach to our approach to acquisition is being considered by LC. The approach is designed to decrease risks for the vendors, while encouraging a broader set of vendors able and we hope willing to partner with LLNL and LC. The future HPC Center vision and acquisition approach was conceived to meet the future mission needs of the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Program within the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

Level-2 Milestone 9009: Flux and Rabbit Capabilities on El Capitan

This document is the milestone delivery report for the ASC 2025 L2 milestone (See Table 1) for advanced I/O capabilities for El Capitan via Flux Workload Manager support and the new I/O hardware designed for El Capitan, the Rabbit Storage System. In this document we describe the design of the Rabbit Storage System and how it is managed by Flux. We evaluate the performance and usability of Rabbit using ARES, IOR, and an AI inference workload. Overall, we find that Rabbit shows good scalability, especially in node-local storage configurations, and is more scalable than the global Lustre parallel file system.
