Ultrafine tuning of MOF structures at sub-angstrom or picometer levels can help improve separation selectivity for gases with subtle differences. However, for MOFs with large-enough pore size, the effect from ultrafine tuning on sorption can be muted. Here we show an integrative strategy that couples together extreme pore compression with ultrafine pore tuning. Furthermore, this strategy is made possible by unique combination of two features of the pacs platform (pacs = partitioned acs): multi-modular framework and exceptional tolerance towards isoreticular replacement. Specifically, we use one module (Ligand 1, L1) to shrink pore size to an extreme minimum on pacs. A compression ratio of about 30% was achieved (based on unit-cell c/a ratio) from prototypical 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate-pacs to trans-1,3-cyclobutanedicarboxylate-pacs. This is followed by using another module (Ligand 2, L2) for ultrafine pore tuning (< 3% compression). This L1-L2 strategy increases C 2 H 2 /CO 2 selectivity from 2.6 to 20.8 and gives rise to excellent experi-mental breakthrough performance. Being the shortest cyclic dicarboxylate that mimics para-benzene-based moieties us-ing bioisosteric (BIS) strategy on pacs, trans-1,3-cyclobutanedicarboxylate-based MOF chemistry offers new opportuni-ties in MOF chemistry.
Future energy demand is likely to increase due to climate change, but the magnitude depends on many interacting sources of uncertainty. We combine econometrically estimated responses of energy use to income, hot and cold days with future projections of spatial population and national income under five socioeconomic scenarios and temperature increases around 2050 for two emission scenarios simulated by 21 Earth System Models (ESMs). Here we show that, across 210 realizations of socioeconomic and climate scenarios, vigorous (moderate) warming increases global climate-exposed energy demand before adaptation around 2050 by 25–58% (11–27%), on top of a factor 1.7–2.8 increase above present-day due to socioeconomic developments. We find broad agreement among ESMs that energy demand rises by more than 25% in the tropics and southern regions of the USA, Europe and China. Socioeconomic scenarios vary widely in the number of people in low-income countries exposed to increases in energy demand.

Condensates are a hallmark of emergence in quantum materials with superconductors and charge density wave as prominent examples. An excitonic insulator (EI) is an intriguing addition to this library, exhibiting spontaneous condensation of electron-hole pairs. However, condensate observables can be obscured through parasitic coupling to the lattice. Time-resolved terahertz (THz) spectroscopy can disentangle such obscurants through measurement of the quantum dynamics. We target Ta 2 NiSe 5 , a putative room-temperature EI where electron-lattice coupling dominates the structural transition (T c = 326 K), hindering identification of excitonic correlations. A pronounced increase in the THz reflectivity manifests following photoexcitation and exhibits a BEC-like temperature dependence. This occurs well below the T c , suggesting a novel approach to monitor exciton condensate dynamics. Nonetheless, dynamic condensate-phonon coupling remains as evidenced by peaks in the enhanced reflectivity spectrum at select infrared-active phonon frequencies. This indicates that parametric reflectivity enhancement arises from phonon squeezing, validated using Fresnel-Floquet theory and density functional calculations. In conclusion, our results highlight that coherent dynamics can drive parametric stimulated emission with concomitant possibilities, including entangled THz photon generation.
