SIERRA/Aero User Manual - Version 5.8

SIERRA/Aero is a compressible fluid dynamics program intended to solve a wide variety compressible fluid flows including transonic and hypersonic problems. This document describes the commands for assembling a fluid model for analysis with this module, henceforth referred to simply as Aero for brevity. Aero is an application developed using the SIERRA Toolkit (STK). The intent of STK is to provide a set of tools for handling common tasks that programmers encounter when developing a code for numerical simulation. For example, components of STK provide field allocation and management, and parallel input/output of field and mesh data. These services also allow the development of coupled mechanics analysis software for a massively parallel computing environment. In the definitions of the commands that follow, the term Real_Max denotes the largest floating point value that can be represented on a given computer. Int_Max is the largest such integer value.

PROTEUS: Machine Learning Driven Resilience for Extreme-scale Systems

The objective of this project is to design, develop, and evaluate scalable software to enhance resilience, data checkpointing, program restart, and analysis. The proposed tasks are to 1) develop scalable machine learning techniques to learn temporal change patterns in a scalable and in-situ manner, and to minimize data movement and maximize learning locally closest to data; 2) design a concise data representation and indexing mechanism to capture the distribution of changes in data that can guarantee point-wise user-defined tolerable errors while reducing the data storage requirements by an order of magnitude or more; 3) develop data reduction techniques as library modules; 4) exploit local SSD for minimizing data movement in storage hierarchy; 5) develop anomaly detection algorithms that can predict corruptions based on learning of emerging patterns; 6) develop software libraries to be incorporated within widely used data formats and APIs; and 7) evaluate the proposed software using DOE scientific applications. The outcomes of the proposed work are to satisfy many synergistic data reduction and resilience requirements for large-scale data intensive applications executed on extreme-scale computing systems. The developed mechanism for error-bound data approximation is directly applicable to existing scientific applications. Through machine learning from historical events and change distribution, this work will enable anomaly detection for DOE computer facility.

Parallel Time Integration: An Approaching Paradigm Shift for Scientific Computing

This note argues that parallel-in-time methods will be necessary for doing high-fidelity time-dependent simulations in the future. A “proof” is given to support the argument and to provide a framework for debate. The effect of a parallel-in-time paradigm on scientific computing practice is also discussed.

In-situ TEM EELS analysis of memristive thin films for neuromorphic computing

Neuromorphic computing stands as a promising frontier for advancing AI algorithms and applications like ChatGBT, offering significant energy efficiency gains. This paper delves into the hardware design intricacies of memristive thin films and their elementary switching mechanisms, including anion migration, electron migration, and phase transitions. Through comprehensive analysis of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) data via in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we will deduce the primary memristive switching mechanisms vital for optimizing thin film fabrication parameters and achieving desired film thickness, conductivity, and memory retention. A single crystal ptype Si substrate was used with TiN as the bottom metal electrode, TiO x as the insulating dielectric layer, and Pt as the top metal electrode. In-situ TEM was able to tell us the thin film didn’t behave like a filamentary or phase transition material. EELS data deduced that electron trapping/detrapping was one of the primary switching mechanisms. By shedding light on these elementary mechanisms, our study aims to catalyze the development of more 2 efficient and effective neuromorphic computing systems to be deployed into mainstream technologies.

Sierra/SolidMechanics for Target Pulse Analysis

Sierra is a Multiphysics engineering simulation software suite developed and maintained by Sandia National Laboratories. Created for nuclear weapon needs, it is available to national laboratories with a foreign national restriction. The STS Target Systems analysis team is interested in using Sierra to perform explicit dynamics simulations of the tantalum clad tungsten target blocks as a response to sudden temperature changes induced by proton beam pulses. The capability already exists with Abaqus|Explicit, however, there are time and cost limitations due to licensing. The following document serves as a “quick-start” guide to the successful setup, simulation, and post-processing of a target model in Sierra on the OZ3 computing cluster at the Spallation Neutron Source.

The Feasibility of Incorporating a 3D Velocity Model Into Earthquake Location Around Salt Lake City, UT Using a Physics Informed Neural Network

Earthquake location algorithms typically require travel time calculation. Doing this calculation in 3D, despite advances in algorithm efficiency and computational power, can still be prohibitively expensive in terms of resources and storage. Implementation of high-resolution 3D models in routine earthquake location would be a significant step forward in most of the world. Machine learning algorithms have potential to act as substitutes for travel time calculation algorithms or stored travel time tables. We investigate EikoNet - a physics informed neural network machine learning model that estimates travel times very quickly and comes with negligible memory-overhead. Specifically, we apply EikoNet to the Wasatch Fault Community Velocity Model (WFCVM), a highly detailed and complex 3D velocity model of the Salt Lake City, UT region. While routine locations in the area and studies of the 2020 Magna, UT earthquake sequence used a 1D velocity model, a 3D model may help better our understanding the structure of the major fault in the region. Our primary goal was to test the speed, memory requirements, and accuracy of EikoNet compared to a reference eikonal solver. We find that while the EikoNet is exceedingly fast and requires little memory overhead, achieving acceptable accuracy in estimated travel times is difficult and requires extensive computational resources.

Optimising HEP Simulations on 3D Architecture: Primitive Gates for BT

In this report, the first attempt for an alternative approach for the simulation of the non-abelian group BT has been done. First, we analysed why SNAP and Displacement decomposition is not feasible for this problem with the current technology, and then we explored a new approach for the optimisation of the pulses. In particular, we studied how the expansion of the pulses in Chebyshev Polynomials could affect the optimisation process. Even if the study is not conclusive, we believe that it might be worth continuing to study this approach in the future, in order to be able to efficiently implement quantum circuits on computers.

Computational Physics Overview [Slides]

Computational physics is an important part of the overall investment in National Security Science at LANL. Computational physics is the study and implementation of numerical analysis to solve problems in physics for which a quantitative theory already exists. Historically, computational physics was the first application of modern computers in science. There are three key elements to computational physics: mathematical models of physical phenomena and conservation equations, computer codes that implement these models, and computer platforms that execute the code instructions and manipulate the data.

A modern concept of Lagrangian hydrodynamics

Here, we offer a modern interpretation of Lagrangian hydrodynamics as employed in Lagrangian simulations of compressible fluid flow. Our main result is to show that artificial viscosity, traditionally viewed as a numerical artifice to control unphysical oscillations in flows with shocks, actually represents a physical process and is necessary to derive accurate simulations in any compressible flow. We begin by reviewing the origins of two numerical devices, artificial viscosity and finite-volume methods. We proceed to construct a mathematical (PDE) model that incorporates those numerics and in which a new length scale, the observer, arises representing the discretization. Associated with that length scale, there are new inviscid fluxes that are the artificial viscosity as first formulated by Richtmyer and an artificial heat flux postulated by Noh but typically not included in Lagrangian codes. We discuss the connection of our results to bivelocity hydrodynamics. We conclude with some speculation as to the direction of future developments in multidimensional Lagrangian codes as computers get faster and have larger memories.

Blockchain-Enabled Cyber-Secure Microgrid Control Using Consensus Algorithm

This paper proposes a distributed control method based on a consensus algorithm for distributed energy resources (DERs) using blockchain as a secure communication medium for cyber resilience. Each DER communicates with a local blockchain server that is maintained by the distributed ledger technology to allow for securely sharing local measurements among neighbouring assets to achieve the global control objectives, i.e., voltage and frequency regulation as well as accurate power sharing among the DERs, including collective grid-forming capability. To prove that the distributed control can retain system stability under a blockchain-induced variable communication delay, Lyapunov function-based stability analysis is carried out. This paper demonstrates the concept on an 11-bus test case developed in MATLAB Simulink, which has been modified from the IEEE 9-bus test case, to study dynamic operations of the five inverter-based DERs working with a blockchain-induced variable delay. The results validate the superior performance of the proposed control method, compared to heavily compromised operations of the other test cases without the security measure, affected by heavy communication delays and communication interruptions.
