FES 2023 Theory & Simulation Performance Target

The Report for the 2023 Theory & Simulation Performance Target (TSPT) is presented herein. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarter Reports are given in Sec. I, Sec. II and Sec. III. These are unchanged from those previously submitted, except that in this final document the equations, figures and citations have been automatically renumbered. The 4th Quarter Report is given in Sec. IV. The following material presents verification calculations of several widely used three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium codes in strongly shaped configurations; for both fixed and free-boundary equilibria; for the so-called vacuum case and for the case of high plasma pressure; and, for magnetic fields that have nested magnetic surfaces and for fields that have a magnetic island. The configurations studied includes the recently discovered “precise-QA” case [Phys. Rev. Lett., 128, 035001 (2002)] and other highly optimized configurations. Because of the strong (extreme) shaping, the latter of these pose challenges to the 3D MHD codes. A new method is introduced for constructing coordinates in arbitrarily shaped toroidal domains, and this can improve the robustness of 3D equilibrium calculations. Beyond the equilibrium calculation, this report demonstrates the capability of performing non-linear extended-MHD modelling of optimized stellarator equilibria. This capability allows the assessment not only of linear stability thresholds but also of the nonlinear evolution of unstable equilibria to new configurations that might be far from the original configuration, with significantly different transport properties and magnetic topology. They also enable the self-consistent determination of pressure profiles in non-integrable magnetic topology through the use of highly anisotropic thermal-transport equations. The calculations presented here represent the first demonstration of extended-MHD calculations in strongly-shaped, optimized quasi-symmetric configurations.

4th Big Data for Nuclear Power Plants Workshop 2023

The Ohio State University and Idaho National Laboratory organized the 4 th Big Data for Nuclear Power Plants Workshop in November, 2023 in Columbus, Ohio. Workshop topics were chosen to understand the challenges and gaps that need to be addressed to maximize the impact of data on the nuclear industry, as well as the associated applications and risks. Discussions were focused around six specific application areas: Operation and Maintenance; Machine Learning in Nuclear Materials and Advanced Manufacturing; Cybersecurity; High-Performance Computing and Massive Computation; Big Data and Digital Twins; and Nuclear Non-Proliferation. The opportunities, challenges, and risks identified in the six focus areas explored in this workshop are diverse, but some common themes emerge, such as the importance of data integrity, quality, coverage, privacy, and traceability. Big data and AI/ML tools can be leveraged to reduce costs, optimize human tasking, and reduce human error across various application areas. In order for the nuclear industry to benefit from big data and advanced analytic capabilities, it is essential to address challenges and risks, such as data privacy, model reliability, and computational resource availability. Learning from other industries that have successfully implemented big data and AI/ML technologies, like the aerospace industry, can help the nuclear industry successfully integrate these technologies.

IROS 2023 Workshop Report: Draft Guidelines on Manufacturing Procedures, Test Methods and Reporting for Soft Robotics

Soft roboticists are facing challenges with reproducibility, which prevents researchers from making holistic comparisons to prior work, impedes full understanding of results, and forces the need to “reinvent the wheel,” delaying fundamental advances. Reproducibility of results is key to advancing science as well as achieving technology transfer from research laboratories to industrial applications. Recently, a discussion-based workshop dedicated to the topic, “Developing Standard Testing and Reporting Guidelines for Soft Robotics,” was held at IROS 2023 in Detroit, MI. The purpose of this document is to record a set of recommendations and voluntary draft guidelines for soft roboticists concerning fabrication/manufacturing, test procedures, and reporting, which were collectively developed at the workshop. Together as a community, we hope to improve the reporting standards of soft robotics and drive the field as a whole toward more rigorous research practices.

Novel quantum states of matter in moiré materials (2023 Aspen Winter Conference)

This report is to summarize the proceedings of the conference “Novel Quantum States of Matter in Moiré Materials,” which was held at the Aspen Center for Physics, March 12 – 17, 2023. The conference organizers thank the Department of Energy (DOE) for providing funding support for the conference. The advent of moiré quantum materials has opened a highly tunable platform for exploring the interplay between electronic structure, interactions, symmetry, and topology. Since the discovery of correlated insulator states and superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), a growing variety of moiré systems have emerged, revealing novel correlated and topological phenomena such as quantum anomalous Hall systems, generalized Wigner crystals, and fractional Chern insulators. This rich phenomenology continues to attract intense theoretical and experimental interest.

Sensor Development for Liquid Water Detection in Dry Storage Casks: FY 2023 Status

Modeling efforts were undertaken in fiscal year (FY) 2023 to evaluate the feasibility and capability for sensing of liquid water inside canister-based dry cask storage systems (DCSSs). The focus was on the development of full-scale finite element models (FEMs) of ultrasound propagation through DCSS canister components. For these initial investigations, simulation of the baseplate component was targeted, envisioning water collection at the bottom of a vertically oriented canister. The effects of internal canister components (i.e., fuel basket, fuel assemblies) on ultrasound propagation in the baseplate component were evaluated in these efforts. The environment inside a DCSS confinement is intended to be inert and free of water to prevent potential corrosion of used fuel cladding or other internal hardware. Spent fuel assemblies are dried, after storage in water pools, to make sure water has been removed from assembly cavities. However, there is some uncertainty about the amount of residual water potentially left behind in a DCSS after drying processes, because water can become trapped in cavities or other small crevices in the surfaces formed by the fuel cladding, fuel assemblies, and other internal hardware components. Considering the complex space- and time-dependent temperature profiles in DCSSs, water may be in a liquid or gas phase depending on its location in the cask and how long the cask has been in storage. Evacuating most water and oxidizing agents contained within a canister is recommended by NUREG-1536 (NRC 2010), which covers DCSSs. As summarized by Salazar et al. (2020), existing guidance typically relies on achievable vacuum pumping pressures sustained over a hold period as a signal of dryness and water removal. However, time series data about water removal from full-scale commercial drying procedures are lacking (Hanson and Alsaed 2019). A review of drying specifications from several vendors led to the conclusion that if the specifications are followed correctly, the residual moisture in DCSSs should present an insignificant risk of cladding degradation (Knoll and Gilbert 1987). A more recent analysis concluded that much larger quantities of residual water could remain in DCSSs, but the amount would still not be expected to lead to significant corrosion of fuel cladding or other internal components (Jung et al. 2013). Industry drying procedures are mostly prescriptive in nature, and operational issues arising during the process could result in incomplete drying. A summary of operational issues and potential negative effects of residual water is provided by Salazar et al. (2019). Experimental efforts are ongoing to validate the extent of water removal in a DCSS based on drying procedures used at nuclear power plants through well-designed investigations of drying process efficacy and water retention (Durbin et al. 2021; Pulido et al. 2022a, Pulido et al. 2022b). This has been approached by simulating limited portions of a DCSS internal volume and fuel assemblies. So far, these efforts have focused on the effects of potential water trapping in the dashpot region of control rod guide tubes but are expected to be expanded to include the effects of other internal hardware features and failed fuel rod cladding. A method for detection and measurement of liquid water (Meyer et al. 2022; Meyer et al. 2021), in tandem with the drying information gained through experimental investigations, provides comprehensive bases for understanding the internal conditions of DCSSs and provides technical information to support licensing decisions.
