Group 4 Metallocenes Supported on Sulfated Zirconium Oxide Catalyze Benzene C–H Borylation

C−H bond functionalization of arenes with boranes continues to be a challenge in catalysis, with late transition and rare earth metals shown to be catalytically active. In this study, group 4 metallocenes grafted onto acidic sulfated zirconia (SZO) are demonstrated to catalyze arene borylation with pinacolborane (HBpin). Catalysis studies at partial HBpin conversions (59−68%) using Cp 2 M(Me)/SZO (M = Ti, Zr, or Hf; Cp = cyclopentadienyl) catalysts reveal that Zr exhibits greater selectivity and activity than Ti and Hf. At 0.16 mol % of Zr, Cp 2 ZrMe/SZO achieves 332 turnovers at high HBpin conversion (86%), making this catalyst comparably active to previously reported Ir and Rh C−H borylation catalysts. At 160 °C, a maximum chemoselectivity of 82% for PhBpin was observed at 24% HBpin conversion. The superior activity of ionic Cp 2 ZrMe/SZO compared to neutral Cp 2 ZrMe/SiO 2 demonstrates the borylation mechanism relies on the highly electrophilic, coordinatively unsaturated cationic sites stabilized by the weakly coordinating sulfated support. Furthermore, both catalysts significantly outperform their molecular analogues, Cp 2 ZrMe 2 and [Cp 2 ZrMe][B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 ], suggesting that the support enhances catalytic performance by stabilizing the active species.

Rapid atom-efficient polyolefin plastics hydrogenolysis mediated by a well-defined single-site electrophilic/cationic organo-zirconium catalyst

Polyolefins comprise a major fraction of single-use plastics, yet their catalytic deconstruction/recycling has proven challenging due to their inert saturated hydrocarbon connectivities. Here a very electrophilic, formally cationic earth-abundant single-site organozirconium catalyst chemisorbed on a highly Brønsted acidic sulfated alumina support and characterized by a broad array of experimental and theoretical techniques, is shown to mediate the rapid hydrogenolytic cleavage of molecular and macromolecular saturated hydrocarbons under mild conditions, with catalytic onset as low as 90 °C/0.5 atm H 2 with 0.02 mol% catalyst loading. For polyethylene, quantitative hydrogenolysis to light hydrocarbons proceeds within 48 min with an activity of > 4000 mol(CH 2 units)·mol(Zr) –1 ·h –1 at 200 °C/2 atm H 2 pressure. Under similar solventless conditions, polyethylene-co–1-octene, isotactic polypropylene, and a post-consumer food container cap are rapidly hydrogenolyzed to low molecular mass hydrocarbons. Regarding mechanism, theory and experiment identify a turnover-limiting C-C scission pathway involving ß-alkyl transfer rather than the more common σ-bond metathesis.

Delayed fluorescence from a zirconium(iv) photosensitizer with ligand-to-metal charge-transfer excited states

Advances in chemical control of the photophysical properties of transition-metal complexes are revolutionizing a wide range of technologies, particularly photocatalysis and light-emitting diodes, but they rely heavily on molecules containing precious metals such as ruthenium and iridium. While the application of earth-abundant ‘early’ transition metals in photosensitizers is clearly advantageous, a detailed understanding of excited states with ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) character is paramount to account for their distinct electron configurations. Here we report an air- and moisture-stable, visible lightabsorbing Zr(iv) photosensitizer, Zr( Mes PDP Ph ) 2 , where [ Mes PDP Ph ] 2- is the doubly deprotonated form of [2,6-bis(5-(2,4,6- trimethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine]. This molecule has an exceptionally long-lived triplet LMCT excited state (τ = 350 μs), featuring highly efficient photoluminescence emission (Ф = 0.45) due to thermally activated delayed fluorescence emanating from the higher-lying singlet configuration with significant LMCT contributions. Zr( Mes PDP Ph ) 2 engages in numerous photoredox catalytic processes and triplet energy transfer. Our exploration offers a blueprint for future photosensitizer development featuring early transition metals and excited states with significant LMCT contributions.

Deviatoric stress-induced metallization, layer reconstruction and collapse of van der Waals bonded zirconium disulfide

In contrast to two-dimensional (2D) monolayer materials, van der Waals layered transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit rich polymorphism, making them promising candidates for novel superconductor, topological insulators and electrochemical catalysts. Here, we highlight the role of hydrostatic pressure on the evolution of electronic and crystal structures of layered ZrS2. Under deviatoric stress, our electrical experiments demonstrate a semiconductor-to-metal transition above 30.2 GPa, while quasi-hydrostatic compression postponed the metallization to 38.9 GPa. Both X-ray diffraction and Raman results reveal structural phase transitions different from those under hydrostatic pressure. Under deviatoric stress, ZrS2 rearranges the original ZrS6 octahedra into ZrS8 cuboids at 5.5 GPa, in which the unique cuboids coordination of Zr atoms is thermodynamically metastable. The structure collapses to a partially disordered phase at 17.4 GPa. These complex phase transitions present the importance of deviatoric stress on the highly tunable electronic properties of ZrS2 with possible implications for optoelectronic devices.

Ab-initio simulations of coherent phonon-induced pumping of carriers in zirconium pentatelluride

Abstract Laser-driven coherent phonons can act as modulated strain fields and modify the adiabatic ground state topology of quantum materials. Here we use time-dependent first-principles and effective model calculations to simulate the effect of the coherent phonon induced by strong terahertz electric field on electronic carriers in the topological insulator ZrTe 5 . We show that a coherent A 1g Raman mode modulation can effectively pump carriers across the band gap, even though the phonon energy is about an order of magnitude smaller than the equilibrium band gap. We reveal the microscopic mechanism of this effect which occurs via Landau–Zener-Stückelberg tunneling of Bloch electrons in a narrow region in the Brillouin zone center where the transient energy gap closes when the system switches from strong to weak topological insulator. The quantum dynamics simulation results are in excellent agreement with recent pump-probe experiments in ZrTe 5 at low temperature.

Zirconium and hafnium polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane complexes – green homogeneous catalysts in the formation of bio-derived ethers via a MPV/etherification reaction cascade

The polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane complexes, {[(isobutyl) 7 Si 7 O 12 ]ZrOPr i ·(HOPr i )}2 (I), {[(cyclohexyl) 7 Si 7 O 12 ]ZrOPr i ·(HOPr i )} 2 (II), {[(isobutyl) 7 Si 7 O 12 ]HfOPr i ·(HOPr i )} 2 (III) and {[(cyclohexyl) 7 Si 7 O 12 ]HfOPr i ·(HOPr i )} 2 (IV), were synthesized in good yields from the reactions of M(OPr i ) 4 (M = Zr, Hf) with R-POSS(OH) 3 (R = isobutyl, cyclohexyl), resp. I–IV were characterized by 1 H, 13 C and 29 Si NMR spectroscopy and their dimeric solid-state structures were confirmed by X-ray analysis. I–IV catalyze the reductive etherification of 2-hydroxy- and 4-hydroxy and 2-methoxy and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and vanillin to their respective isopropyl ethers in isopropanol as a “green” solvent and reagent. I–IV are durable and robust homogeneous catalysts operating at temperatures of 100–160 °C for days without significant loss of catalytic activity. Likewise, I–IV selectively catalyze the conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-bis(isopropoxymethyl)furane (BPMF), a potentially high-performance fuel additive. Similar results were achieved by using a combination of M(OPr i ) 4 and ligand R-POSS(OH) 3 as a catalyst system demonstrating the potential of this “in situ” approach for applications in biomass transformations. A tentative reaction mechanism for the reductive etherification of aldehydes catalysed by I–IV is proposed.

A series of cation-modified robust zirconium-based metal–organic frameworks for carbon dioxide capture

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) represent one of the most promising porous solids for possible use as sorbents to control and reduce the greenhouse gas emission. Studies have shown that open metal sites (OMS) interact strongly with carbon dioxide and thus, serve as efficient binding sites for CO 2 capture. However, many OMS-bearing MOFs are lack of framework stability and often have high regeneration temperature. To seek ways to solve the stability issue, we designed a series of isoreticular MOFs, Zr-tcpb-COOM (M = alkali/alkaline earth metal), by exchange of protons with metal ions on Zr-tcpb-COOH via post-synthetic modification (PSM). The pristine MOF (Zr-tcpb-COOH) has a very robust framework. The PSM process does not deteriorate the framework stability but creates metal binding sites that form strong bonds with carbon dioxide. The results show that at low CO 2 pressure, the uptake amount is enhanced considerably using Zr-tcpb-COOM and is in trend of increasing atomic number (Li + < Na + < K + < Ca 2+ ). High adsorption selectivity (CO 2 /N 2 IAST selectivity (15 : 85) = 539.5) is also achieved for CO 2 over N 2 at room temperature. This approach offers a feasible method to improve CO 2 capture capacity, especially at low concentrations.

Insights into dual-functional modification for water stability enhancement of mesoporous zirconium metal–organic frameworks

The stability of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in water affects their ability to function as chemical catalysts, their capacity as adsorbents for separations in water vapor presence, and their usefulness as recyclable water harvesters. Here, we have examined water stability of four node-modified variants of the mesoporous MOF, NU-1000, namely formate-, Acac-, TFacac-, and Facac-NU-1000, comparing these with node-accessible NU-1000. These NU-1000 variants present ligands grafted to NU-1000's hexa-Zr(IV)-oxy nodes by displacing terminal aqua and hydroxo ligands. Facac-NU-1000, containing the most hydrophobic ligands, showed the greatest water stability, being able to undergo at least 20 water adsorption/desorption cycles without loss of water uptake capacity. Computational studies revealed dual salutary functions of installed Facac ligands: (1) enhancement of framework mechanical stability due to electrostatic interactions; and (2) transformation and shielding of the otherwise highly hydrophilic nodes from H-bonding interactions with free water, presumably leading to weaker channel-stressing capillary forces during water evacuation – consistent with trends in free energies of dehydration across the NU-1000 variants. Water harvesting and hydrolysis of chemical warfare agent simulants were examined to gauge the functional consequences of modification and mechanical stabilization of NU-1000 by Facac ligands. The studies revealed a harvesting capacity of ~1.1 L of water vapor per gram of Facac-NU-1000 per sorption cycle. They also revealed retention of catalytic MOF activity following 20 water uptake and release cycles. This study provides insights into the basis for node-ligand-engendered stabilization of wide-channel MOFs against collapse during water removal.

Effects of Al concentration on the structure and conductivity of lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide

Cubic Li 7-3x Al x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) is a promising, next-generation solid electrolyte due to its stability with Li-metal and high bulk conductivity (~1 mS cm -1 ). However, the source of the high conductivity is not completely understood. In this work, we address this key knowledge gap through the integration of elemental analysis, neutron diffraction sensitive to Li and O atoms, and impedance spectroscopy to understand the structure–property correlations for LLZO. We show the metal–oxygen framework structure remains constant with variation in Al substitution, resulting in a constant activation energy of ~0.35 eV and little effect on the bulk conductivity. Instead, Li concentration, Al blocking and trapping of mobile defects, and Li–Li nearest neighbor interactions largely control the Al substituted LLZO bulk conductivity, resulting in decreases from 0.73 to 0.22 mS cm -1 as the Al concentration increases from 0.17 to 0.32 mol. These results differ from those of Ta substituted LLZO, where the framework structure and Li–Li site distances play large roles in controlling the conductivity. The increased understanding of the controlling factors of conductivity allows for greater ability to tailor the design of and substitution into the LLZO structure for improved conductivity.
