On the Maximum Expected Electric Field in Electrically Small, Undermoded Enclosures

This paper reports the experimental validation of an improved statistical model for the prediction of maximum expected electric field in electrically small and under-moded enclosures. The aerospace community is interested in application of Hill’s statistical models to design of avionics boxes for shielding effectiveness and for tailoring EMC test requirements for critical applications. However, it is observed that the probability distribution for mean-squared electric field (|E(sub x)|(exp 2)) in an electrically small enclosure differs from the exponential distribution which is widely used in reverberation chamber testing. It is postulated here that the difference is attributable to the under-moded character of the small enclosure. We will define “under-moded” as the condition where a single excitation frequency does not excite enough closely spaced resonant modes to achieve Hill’s assumption of an isotropic (or fully diffuse) plane wave field in the enclosure.

Equilibrium shape and location of a liquid drop acoustically positioned in a resonant rectangular chamber

The effect of a standing wave field in a rectangular chamber on the shape and location of an acoustically positioned drop or bubble is calculated. The sample deformation and equilibrium position are obtained from an analysis of the spherical harmonic projections of the total surface stress tensor. The method of calculation relies on the assumed condition that the sample is only slightly distorted from a spherical form. The equilibrium location of a levitated drop is combined with a formula introduced by Hasegawa (1979) to calcualte the ka dependence of the radiation force function. The present theory is valid for large as well as small ka values. Calculations in the small ka limit agree with previous theories and experimental results. Examples are presented for nonplane-wave modes as well as plane-wave rectangular modes.

Insights on TTL Dehydration Mechanisms from Microphysical Modelling of Aircraft Observations

The Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL), a transition layer between the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere in the tropics, serves as the entryway of various trace gases into the stratosphere. Of particular interest is the transport of water vapor through the TTL, as WV is an important greenhouse gas and also plays a significant role in stratospheric chemistry by affecting polar stratospheric cloud formation and the ozone budget. While the dominant control of stratospheric water vapor by tropical cold point temperatures via the "freeze-drying" process is generally well understood, the details of the TTL dehydration mechanisms, including the relative roles of deep convection, atmospheric waves and cloud microphysical processes, remain an active area of research. The dynamical and microphysical processes that influence TTL water vapor concentrations are investigated in simulations of cloud formation and dehydration along air parcel trajectories. We first confirm the validity of our Lagrangian models in a case study involving measurements from the Airborne Tropical TRopopause EXperiment (ATTREX) flights over the central and eastern tropical Pacific in Oct-Nov 2011 and Jan-Feb 2013. ERA-Interim winds and seasonal mean heating rates from Yang et al. (2010) are used to advance parcels back in time from the flight tracks, and time-varying vertical profiles of water vapor along the diabatic trajectories are calculated in a one-dimensional cloud model as in Jensen and Pfister (2004) but with more reliable temperature field, wave and convection schemes. The simulated water vapor profiles demonstrate a significant improvement over estimates based on the Lagrangian Dry Point, agreeing well with aircraft observations when the effects of cloud microphysics, subgrid-scale gravity waves and convection are included. Following this approach, we examine the dynamical and microphysical control of TTL water vapor in the 30ºS-30ºN latitudinal belt and elucidate the dominant processes in the winter and summer seasons. Implications of the TTL dehydration processes for the regulation of global stratospheric humidity will be discussed.

Operating features of an ion-cyclotron-wave plasma apparatus running in the RF-sustained mode

An experimental study has been made of an ion-cyclotron-wave apparatus operated in the RF-sustained mode. This is a mode in which the Stix RF coil both propagates the waves and maintains the plasma. Problems associated with this method of operation are presented. Some factors that are important to the coupling of RF power are noted. In general, the wave-propagation and wave-damping data agree with theory. Some irregularities in wave fields are observed. Maximum ion temperature is 870 eV at a density of 5 times 10 to the 12th power per cubic centimeter and RF power of 90 kW. Coupling efficiency is 70 percent.

Laser-induced line-narrowing effects in coupled Doppler-broadened transitions. II - Standing-wave features.

Previous theoretical results on the influence of a laser on the line shape of a coupled transition (laser-induced line narrowing) have been restricted to the case where the laser is detuned from the center of its atomic gain profile or is in the form of a traveling wave. The present paper extends these results to the case where the laser is an intense standing-wave field tunable to the center of its atomic gain profile (conditions for Lamb dip). A theoretical solution of the problem is developed, and a detailed discussion of line shapes and physical processes involved is included.

Quadrupole moment of CO, N2, and NO/+/

Evaluation of quadrupole moments obtained for CO, N2, and NO(+) with multiconfiguration self-consistent-field wave functions chosen by the optimized valence configuration (OVC) approach of Wahl and Das (1972). The quadrupole moments thus obtained are compared with both experimental and Hartree-Fock values. The Hartree-Fock results are found to be not very accurate for N2, especially if vibrational averages over vibrational levels greater than 1 or 2 are to be taken. The agreement between the OVC quadrupole moment and the experimental values is found to be best for CO.

Acoustic radiation from sources convected at transonic speeds

Each supersonic jet contains a long segment of transonic flow, and it is known through acoustic experiments that the strongest noise production region is embedded in this segment. The linearized convected wave equation breaks down in the transonic regime and a nonlinear equation must be used. Amplitude, directivity, and the transonic similarity rule for noise radiation can be established through proper matching of the displacement amplitude between the source and the wave field. This paper is a first step towards establishing a general theory of transonic aeroacoustics.

Nonlinear evolution of the collisionless tearing mode

For a broad k vector spectrum, the collisionless tearing mode grows linearly until the Landau electrons become magnetized by the wave field. The electrons then spatially diffuse as a result of turbulent magnetic-gradient drifts which leads to a nonlinearly enhanced growth rate. At large amplitudes the nonlinear growth rate is dominated by ions.

Three-dimensional modelling in magnetotelluric and magnetic variational sounding

The Galerkin finite-element method is used to obtain approximate solutions for the three-dimensional induction problem. A rectangular conductive prism is considered as an example, and solutions are obtained for linear and circularly polarized incident plane-wave fields. Magnetotelluric tensor impedances and magnetic transfer functions are computed. Polar diagrams of the tensor impedances and magnetic transfer functions along with their amplitude contour maps are presented. The dimensionality parameter, skew, is contoured at the surface of the earth. It is shown that the relative amplitudes and shapes of the additional and principal impedance polar diagrams can be used to determine the dimensionality of geoelectrical structures. Stations with skew values greater than 0.2 are significantly influenced by the three-dimensionality of the geoelectric structure. The amplitudes of the magnetic transfer function and the orientations of its polar diagrams exhibit large anomalies in the vicinity of the intersection of the lateral contacts.

Observations of a double-layer in a hot-cathode discharge

The meniscus region of a hot cathode discharge was selected for an analysis of the nonlinear interaction of a convectively amplifying wave with a background plasma. A potential step, resulting from rectification of the wave fields is observed, and it is noted that predicted values for the step are in good agreement with empirical data. Attention is given to the determination of plasma parameters (using a Langmuir probe placed in front of the cathode) in terms of their relation to the pondermotive force.

Pitch-angle diffusion by whistler mode waves near the Io plasma torus

As Voyager 1 traversed the inner radiation belt of Jupiter, wave-particle interactions involving energetic electrons and whistler mode turbulence were strongly affected by the presence of the Io plasma torus. Within the high density torus the resonant electron energy was low and the associated high index of refraction yielded high B-to-E ratios for the wave fields, leading to very strong pitch-angle scattering. It is shown that significant spatial and temporal variations in plasma conditions produced large fluctuations in local scattering times, and the problems associated with the evaluation of precipitation lifetime are discussed.

Acoustic fluidization - A new geologic process

A number of geologic processes, particularly seismic faulting, impact crater slumping, and long runout landslides, require the failure of geologic materials under differential stresses much smaller than expected on the basis of conventional rock mechanics. This paper proposes that the low strengths apparent in these phenomena are due to a state of 'acoustic fluidization' induced by a transient strong acoustic wave field. The strain rates possible in such a field are evaluated, and it is shown that acoustically fluidized debris behaves as a newtonian fluid with a viscosity in the range 100,000 to 10,000,000 P for plausible conditions. Energy gains and losses in the acoustic field are discussed, and the mechanism is shown to be effective if internal dissipation in the field gives a Q approximately greater than 100. Whether such values for Q are realized is not known at present. However, acoustic fluidization provides a qualitatively correct description of the failure of rock debris under low differential stresses in the processes of faulting, crater slumping, and long runout landslides. Acoustic fluidization thus deserves serious consideration as a possible explanation of these phenomena.

Upstream particle events close to the bow shock and 200 earth radii upstream - ISEE-1 and ISEE-3 observations

Two energetic particle events (28 keV - 145 keV) upstream of the earth's bow shock have been investigated with two identical experiments of the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland on ISEE-1 and ISEE-3. Close to the bow shock the particle distribution is more or less isotropic and indicates strong scattering of these particles in the upstream wave field. At ISEE-3 the particles move essentially scatter-free from the general bow shock direction. The temporal evolution of the particle bursts is discussed in terms of the interplanetary magnetic field topology and the scattering conditions.

Topographic coupling of surface and internal Kelvin waves

An analysis is presented for computing the diffraction of barotropic Kelvin waves by a localized topographical irregularity on flat-bottom ocean with an arbitrary vertical stratification. It was shown that all baroclinic Kelvin waves will be generated downstream of the bump, with the first baroclinic mode having the largest amplitude. The Poincare waves predominate in the lowest modes, and are more directionally anisotropic. It was concluded that baroclinic Poincare waves radiating offshore from the bump topography could contribute to the internal wave field in the open ocean and provide an alternative mechanism to dissipate the barotropic tides.

An experimental study of the surface elevation probability distribution and statistics of wind-generated waves

Laboratory experiments were performed to measure the surface elevation probability density function and associated statistical properties for a wind-generated wave field. The laboratory data along with some limited field data were compared. The statistical properties of the surface elevation were processed for comparison with the results derived from the Longuet-Higgins (1963) theory. It is found that, even for the highly non-Gaussian cases, the distribution function proposed by Longuet-Higgins still gives good approximations.

Simultaneous observations of energetic protons close to the bow shock and far upstream

Four upstream energetic proton events (30 keV-75 keV), which were simultaneously observed by the ISEE-1 and ISEE-3 satellites, are investigated. A comparison was made between the absolute flux values about 200 earth radii from the bow shock and the flux values several earth radii in front of the bow shock at two different energies. Close to the bow shock the particle distribution is more or less isotropic and indicates relatively strong scattering of these particles in the upstream wave field. At ISEE-3 between 100 and 200 earth radii upstream from the earth's bow shock, the particles move essentially scatter-free from the general bow shock direction. The proton differential intensity at ISEE-3 is a factor of about 4-15 less than at ISEE-1 at 30 keV. The spectra at ISEE-1 are steeper than the spectra at ISEE-3. Flux ratios and spectra are discussed in terms of a first order Fermi acceleration model with a diffusion coefficient increasing approximately linearly with energy and a free escape boundary at some distance upstream.

Recording and reproduction of microwave holograms using a scanning procedure and their subsequent optical processing

Intensity distributions in nonoptical wave fields can be visualized and stored on photosensitive material. In the case of microwaves, temperature effects can be utilized with the aid of liquid crystals to visualize intensity distributions. Particular advantages for the study of intensity distributions in microwave fields presents a scanning procedure in which a microcomputer is employed for the control of a probe and the storage of the measured data. The present investigation is concerned with the employment of such a scanning procedure for the recording and the reproduction of microwave holograms. The scanning procedure makes use of an approach discussed by Farhat, et al. (1973). An eight-bit microprocessor with 64 kBytes of RAM is employed together with a diskette storage system.
