Reduction of the Equivalent System Mass of a Trash Compaction Processing System Designed for Human Spaceflight Waste Management by Improving its Thermal Efficiency

A spacecraft life support system has been under development at NASA called the Trash Compaction Processing System that manages trash generated on human spaceflight missions. The trash composite typically includes components such as plastic pouches that contain wet food and drinks, used cotton clothing such as underwear and T-shirts, exercise clothing, used washcloths, expended deodorant containers, adhesive tapes, plastic bubble wrap, and other sundry items. The system uses compaction in combination with heat to turn the waste composite into a sturdy and well-defined shape, typically called a tile, which maintains structural integrity and makes the most efficient use of storage space. In addition to reducing the volume of the trash, the Trash Compaction Processing System removes water from the trash. The heating and removal of water from the trash renders it safe against microbial activity. This paper primarily focuses on work aimed at reducing the Equivalent System Mass of a Trash Compaction Processing System via a focus on improving the system’s thermal efficiency.

Sampling and Analysis Plan for Partial Closure of Solid Waste Management Unit #16; Addendum Part I for Delineating BH-056

On July 11, 2022, Sandia National Laboratories in California (SNL/CA) submitted a Response to Regional Water Quality Control Board Comments on Soil Sampling Results for Closure of a Portion of SWMU #16 in response to the February 16,2022 San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board’s (SFRWQCB) letter requesting supporting information for the recommended closure of 7,700 linear feet of abandoned sewer lines. On August 18, 2022, SFRWQCB further requested a Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) for additional “step-out” sampling to delineate the potential presence of benzidine near borehole BH-056, which is located near the former sewer line. SNL/CA is in the process of contracting Weiss Associates (Weiss) to perform and oversee the boring, sampling, analysis, and report development to determine the potential presence and extent of benzidine. This document outlines the work that is anticipated, including the development of the SAP, to complete the investigation and submit a final report to the SFRWQCB. The work proposed by Weiss provides an estimated schedule for completing the investigation and developing the addendum Part II SAP for the project. In addition, Weiss provided a preliminary estimate of the sample locations (see Attachment A) which serve as addendum Part I of the SAP requested by the SFRWQCB. The contractor will submit the addendum Part II SAP, to satisfy the SFRWQCB requirement, before proceeding with any work.

ECLSS Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) Metal Materials Compatibility Study - Elgiloy: Electrochemical and Crevice Corrosion Evaluation

Electrochemical evaluations were conducted on samples of Elgiloy in support of the materials compatibility program for the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS). Results were compared alongside three previously tested metals: Titanium 6Al-4V, Inconel 625, and Hastelloy C276. Titanium exhibited the best results of all the metals, indicating superior corrosive nobility and galvanic protection properties. Elgiloy demonstrated anti-corrosion behavior which appeared to be superior to the two nickel-chromium alloys. For this current effort, the results have clearly shown that Elgiloy possesses excellent corrosion protection properties and is galvanically compatible with the other three metals in the subject test media.

Pedestal Hazard Abatement and Soil Removal Construction Completion Report for Launch Complex 34, Solid Waste Management Unit CC054, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida

This Construction Completion Report summarizes the activities associated with implementation of an interim measure (IM) for hazard abatement of the Launch Pedestal and soil removal at Launch Complex 34 (LC34), Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The purpose of the hazard abatement IM was to mitigate any continuing source of contamination associated with residual paint on the Launch Pedestal that contained polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Sampling determined that residual PCB concerns were limited to the steel elements on the top-side of the Pedestal, which included the torus ring, feed pipe, down pipes, pipe straps and shields, remaining steel cover plates and bolts, and railing support steel. The IM also mitigated the potential spread of contamination to surrounding areas by removing fallen metal fragments from the concrete launch pad, as well as soil from trenches on the launch pad where PCB-containing paint chips may have accumulated prior to or during Pedestal hazard abatement activities.
