Balloon gondola diagnostics package

In order to define a new gondola structural specification and to quantify the balloon termination environment, NASA developed a balloon gondola diagnostics package (GDP). This addition to the balloon flight train is comprised of a large array of electronic sensors employed to define the forces and accelerations imposed on a gondola during the termination event. These sensors include the following: a load cell, a three-axis accelerometer, two three-axis rate gyros, two magnetometers, and a two axis inclinometer. A transceiver couple allows the data to be telemetered across any in-line rotator to the gondola-mounted memory system. The GDP is commanded 'ON' just prior to parachute deployment in order to record the entire event.

Multiple Access Ku-band communications subsystem for the Space Station

This paper presents the results of advanced work on system design for the Space Station Multiple Access Subsystem (SSMAS), which includes equipment aboard the Space Station itself and aboard the space-borne group of user vehicles. In addition to the system development efforts, early hardware design work is being performed. A Ku-band transceiver representing the EVA or other equipment configuration has been breadboarded and system testing performed. Additional hardware is being designed for NASA JSC, which will be assembled to form a SSMAS test bed where the subsystem itself, as well as its hardware components, will be tested and evaluated.

A laser sounder for U.S. Navy helicopters

The design and operating principles of the laser sounder developed for use in airborne coastal-zone bathymetric surveys with a U.S. Navy P-3 aircraft are described and illustrated with diagrams. The sounder components are listed and characterized, including the Nd:YAG transmitter (operating at 532 nm for bottom ranging and 1.064 microns for surface ranging), the scanning transceiver, the 10 x 6-inch-aperture controlled-FOV receiver/digitizer, the constant-fraction discriminator, the time-to-digital converter, the navigation and data-recording subsystems, and the parallel distributed processing computer (comprising a data collection and control system and a real-time processing system). Consideration is also given to the phase-I and phase-II data-reduction software being developed to process the approximately 228 million soundings to be obtained annually. The sounder can be used day or night to sound clear ocean water up to 20 m deep.

TABLET: The personal computer of the year 2000

The University of Illinois design of the TABLET portable computer extends the freedom of pen and notepad with a machine that draws on the projected power of 21st century technology. Without assuming any new, major technological breakthroughs, it seeks to balance the promises of today's growing technologies with the changing role of computers in tomorrow's education, research, security, and commerce. It seeks to gather together in one basket the matured fruits of such buzzword technologies as LCD, GPS, CCD, WSI, and DSP. The design is simple, yet sleek. Roughly the size and weight of a notebook, the machine is a dark, featureless monolith with no moving parts. Through magneto-optics, a simple LaserCard provides exchangeable, mass data storage. Its I/O surface, in concert with built-in infrared and cellular transceivers, puts the user in touch with anyone and anything. The ensemble of these components, directed by software that can transform it into anything from a keyboard or notepad to an office or video studio, suggests an instrument of tremendous power and freedom.

0.87-micron CSP diode lasers for spaceborne communications

Index-guided channeled-substrate-planar (CSP) AlGaAs diode lasers are being developed for reliable, high-power operation for use as sources in spaceborne optical communications systems. Although most work on this AlGaAs structure has been aimed at optimizing performance at output wavelengths less than 8400 A, emission in the 8700 A regime is also of interest. In particular, such wavelengths are required for use in the direct detection laser transceiver to be incorporated into NASA's advanced communications technology satellite, in order to avoid absorption of the light by the atmosphere when communicating with ground-based terminals. Lowest order spatial mode and substantially single longitudinal mode output has been observed in 0.87-micron CSP devices in excess of 50 mW cw and 100 mW 50 percent duty-cycle, with rms phase-front aberrations measured to be about lambda/40.

Preliminary error budget for an optical ranging system: Range, range rate, and differenced range observables

Future missions to the outer solar system or human exploration of Mars may use telemetry systems based on optical rather than radio transmitters. Pulsed laser transmission can be used to deliver telemetry rates of about 100 kbits/sec with an efficiency of several bits for each detected photon. Navigational observables that can be derived from timing pulsed laser signals are discussed. Error budgets are presented based on nominal ground stations and spacecraft-transceiver designs. Assuming a pulsed optical uplink signal, two-way range accuracy may approach the few centimeter level imposed by the troposphere uncertainty. Angular information can be achieved from differenced one-way range using two ground stations with the accuracy limited by the length of the available baseline and by clock synchronization and troposphere errors. A method of synchronizing the ground station clocks using optical ranging measurements is presented. This could allow differenced range accuracy to reach the few centimeter troposphere limit.

NASA direct detection laser diode driver

TRW has developed a prototype driver circuit for GaAs laser diodes as part of the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center's Direct Detection Laser Transceiver (DDLT) program. The circuit is designed to drive the laser diode over a range of user-selectable data rates from 1.7 to 220 Mbps, Manchester-encoded, while ensuring compatibility with 8-bit and quaternary pulse position modulation (QPPM) formats for simulating deep space communications. The resulting hybrid circuit has demonstrated 10 to 90 percent rise and fall times of less than 300 ps at peak currents exceeding 100 mA.

Phase-lock-loop application for fiber optic receiver

Phase-locked loop circuits are frequently employed in communication systems. In recent years, digital phase-locked loop circuits were utilized in optical communications systems. In an optical transceiver system, the digital phase-locked loop circuit is connected to the output of the receiver to extract a clock signal from the received coded data (NRZ, Bi-Phase, or Manchester). The clock signal is then used to reconstruct or recover the original data from the coded data. A theoretical approach to the design of a digital phase-locked loop circuit operation at 1 and 50 MHz is described. Hardware implementation of a breadboard design to function at 1 MHz and a printed-circuit board designed to function at 50 MHz were assembled using emitter coupled logic (ECL) to verify experimentally the theoretical design.

Comparative Study Of Resonator Optics For Lidar Applications

Report discusses overall transmit/receive performances of laser-radar transceivers. Gaussian case and hard-edged case selected for comparison because of their practical importance. Intercomparison shows that for multi-joule-output pulsed CO2 lasers, Gaussian profiled optics offers little improvement over hard-edged option, while greater hardiness and superior energy extraction capability of latter constitutes strong argument in favor of its application.

Integrated DSP/RF design for an MSAT transmitter

In mobile radio systems, the relatively inefficient use of the spectrum by existing Frequency Modulation (FM) techniques is limiting the available channels. Linear modulation methods are thought to provide the necessary push into more efficient usage of the spectrum. The limitation, to date, of the linear modulation techniques is the fact that the nonlinear power amplifier tends to spread the spectrum and thus offset any spectrum efficiency advantage. Linearization techniques are presently being investigated, in the literature, in order to recover some of the lost spectrum, due to spreading. To this end, digital signal processing (DSP) techniques are thought to provide real time predistortion methods. Some of the complex modulation blocks, normally confined to analog circuitry, are being implemented using DSP circuitry. This paper will address the linearization techniques, for mobile satellite (MSAT) transceivers, that use an integrated DSP/radio frequency design.

Analogue and digital linear modulation techniques for mobile satellite

The choice of modulation format for a mobile satellite service is complex. The subjective performance is summarized of candidate schemes and voice coder technologies. It is shown that good performance can be achieved with both analogue and digital voice systems, although the analogue system gives superior performance in fading. The results highlight the need for flexibility in the choice of signaling format. Linear transceiver technology capable of using many forms of narrowband modulation is described.

Ground-based Doppler lidar of increased laser instability: Conception and design

Pulsed CO2 Doppler lidars are effective tools for ground-based atmospheric wind sensing, but the high cost of the lidar transceivers, mainly due to the required high frequency stability (better than 10(exp -9) or 100 KHz), prevents their wide use in meteorology. The best approach to overcome this problem is to develop Doppler lidars that are effective at increased laser instability. This work is based on the results of a new scheme for Doppler lidar detection by the use of frequency synthesis, in a wide fluctuation bandwidth of laser instabilities, is described. A ground-based system, using this approach, is under development in the Institute of Electronics - Bulgarian Academy of Science (BAS).
