Novel Relaxation Time Approximation: A Consistent Calculation of Transport Coefficients with QCD-inspired Relaxation Times

We use a novel formulation of the relaxation time approximation to consistently calculate the bulk and shear viscosity coefficients using QCDinspired energy-dependent relaxation times and phenomenological thermal masses obtained from fits to lattice QCD thermodynamics. The matching conditions are conveniently chosen to simplify the computations.

Precise time and Time Interval (PTTI) measurements from the navigation technology satellites and the GPS NAVSTAR-4 satellite

A time domain estimate for the NAVSTAR-4 SV clock offset was obtained for each SV pass over the GPS monitor sites, using a smoothed reference ephemeris, with corrections for ionospheric delay, tropospheric delay, earth rotation and relativistic effects. Conversion from the time domain to the frequency domain was made using the two sample Allan Variance; sigma-tau plots used to identify the noise processes. Estimates of flicker and white frequency noise for the NAVSTAR-4 rubidium frequency standard were obtained. The contribution of the reference ground clocks and other error sources to the frequency stability estimates were also considered.

Studies in astronomical time series analysis. I - Modeling random processes in the time domain

Several random process models in the time domain are defined and discussed. Attention is given to the moving average model, the autoregressive model, and relationships between and combinations of these models. Consideration is then given to methods for investigating pulse structure, procedures of model construction, computational methods, and numerical experiments. A FORTRAN algorithm of time series analysis has been developed which is relatively stable numerically. Results of test cases are given to study the effect of adding noise and of different distributions for the pulse amplitudes. A preliminary analysis of the light curve of the quasar 3C 272 is considered as an example.

Proceedings of the Thirteenth Annual Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) Applications and Planning Meeting

Proceedings of an annual Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) Applications and Planning Meeting are summarized. A transparent view of the state-of-the-art, an opportunity to express needs, a view of important future trends, and a review of relevant past accomplishments were considered for PTTI managers, systems engineers, and program planner. Specific aims were: to provide PTTI users with new and useful applications, procedures, and techniques; to allow the PTTI researcher to better assess fruitful directions for research efforts.

Precise time and time interval users, requirements and specifications

The functional areas of application of Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) were considered and expanded. A comprehensive overview of the PTTI requirements and applications would provide an opportunity for individuals working in a specific functional area. Mutual problems, requirements, applications or successes shared by those in other functional areas were studied. Based upon the results of a two year study a compendium of PTTI requirements, applications and the means of meeting the requirements among Department of Defense components, other government agencies and major commercial users was compiled and is presented. It was found that the planning process for PTTI support for new acquisitions or new programs was less than a well defined, coordinated process. The processes are described in general terms and a generic model for requirements determination and subsequent coordination which may enhance the planning process and introduce cost benefits to the program is also presented.

Time-resolved speckle effects on the estimation of laser-pulse arrival times

A maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator of the pulse arrival in laser ranging and altimetry is derived for the case of a pulse distorted by shot noise and time-resolved speckle. The performance of the estimator is evaluated for pulse reflections from flat diffuse targets and compared with the performance of a suboptimal centroid estimator and a suboptimal Bar-David ML estimator derived under the assumption of no speckle. In the large-signal limit the accuracy of the estimator was found to improve as the width of the receiver observational interval increases. The timing performance of the estimator is expected to be highly sensitive to background noise when the received pulse energy is high and the receiver observational interval is large. Finally, in the speckle-limited regime the ML estimator performs considerably better than the suboptimal estimators.

Hypersonic Research Vehicle (HRV) real-time flight test support feasibility and requirements study. Part 1: Real-time flight experiment support

The results are presented of a study to identify potential real time remote computational applications to support monitoring HRV flight test experiments along with definitions of preliminary requirements. A major expansion of the support capability available at Ames-Dryden was considered. The focus is on the use of extensive computation and data bases together with real time flight data to generate and present high level information to those monitoring the flight. Six examples were considered: (1) boundary layer transition location; (2) shock wave position estimation; (3) performance estimation; (4) surface temperature estimation; (5) critical structural stress estimation; and (6) stability estimation.

Trajectory optimization for real-time guidance. I - Time-varying LQR on a parallel processor

A key algorithmic element of a real-time trajectory optimization hardware/software implementation, the quadratic program (QP) solver element, is presented. The purpose of the effort is to make nonlinear trajectory optimization fast enough to provide real-time commands during guidance of a vehicle such as an aeromaneuvering orbiter. Many methods of nonlinear programming require the solution of a QP at each iteration. In the trajectory optimization case the QP has a special dynamic programming structure, a LQR-like structure. QP algorithm speed is increased by taking advantage of this special structure and by parallel implementation.

Initial investigations of an adaptive discrete-time controller for nonlinear time-varying robotic models

The objective of this paper is to design a discrete-time controller which forces y(t) = F(q(t),q'(t)) to follow a desired trajectory, when non-linearities may be uncertain. A self-tuning adaptive control algorithm is then developed that addresses three types of errors: (1) error due to model linearization; (2) errors due to controlling a time-varying plant; and (3) errors due to discretization.

Comparison of two-way satellite time transfer and GPS common-view time transfer between OCA and TUG

For about one year the time scales UTC(OCA) and UTC(TUG) were compared by means of GPS and two-way satellite time transfer. At the end of the experiment both links were independently 'calibrated' by measuring the differential delays of the GPS receivers and of the satellite earth stations by transportation of a GPS receiver and of one of the satellite terminals. The results obtained by both methods differ by about 3 ns, but reveal a seasonal variation of about 8 ns peak-to-peak which is likely the result of a temperature-dependence of the delays of the GPS receivers used. For the comparison of both methods the stabilities of the timescales are of great importance. Unfortunately, during the last three months of the experiment a less stable clock had to be used for the generation of UTC(TUG).
