Asteroid selection for mission opportunities. Appendix: Asteroid data sheets

The characteristics of asteroids selected as possible space mission objectives are presented. The asteroids are described according to: (1) magnitude, (2) spectral reflectivity; (3) phase factors, (4) polarization, (5) light curve, and (6) physical parameters. The data are tabulated on specific formats for each asteroid considered.

A study of ventricular contractility and other parameters possibly related to vasodepressor syncope

The effects of diminished orthostatic and exercise tolerance resulting from prolonged bedrest were studied by noninvasion methods to determine if alterations in myocardial contractility were induced by bedrest. These methods were apexcardiography, systolic time intervals, and echocardiography. It is concluded that bedrest causes detrimental alterations in the contractile state of the myocardium which accounts for the decreases in maximal oxygen uptaken during exercise after bedrest. Tabulated test data are included.

Noise and wake structure measurements in a subsonic tip speed fan: Tabulation and plots of test data

Noise and wake structure measurements in a ducted fan were conducted. The tip speed was kept at subsonic levels. The anechoic platform used during the test is described. The following conditions are reported: (1) one third octave band analyses of the fan noise data, (2) narrow band analyses of the fan noise for selected test conditions, (3) narrow band sound power level data for all fan test conditions, and (4) velocity and air angle evaluation of blade wake data.

Thermodynamic and transport properties of gaseous tetrafluoromethane in chemical equilibrium

Equations and in computer code are presented for the thermodynamic and transport properties of gaseous, undissociated tetrafluoromethane (CF4) in chemical equilibrium. The computer code calculates the thermodynamic and transport properties of CF4 when given any two of five thermodynamic variables (entropy, temperature, volume, pressure, and enthalpy). Equilibrium thermodynamic and transport property data are tabulated and pressure-enthalpy diagrams are presented.

Investigation of brightness changes of MZ Cas and TZ Cas in B- and V-light

The results are presented concerning statistical processing of two-color observations of MZ Cas and TZ Cas. Light histograms, dispersion and statistical amplitudes are given. Light variations of the variables are represented by normal stochastic processes. Observational data are tabulated.

Remote sensing in the detection of regional change.

Investigation of the impact of the California State Water Project on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley, using aerial photo mosaics and high-altitude photography for 1957 and 1971. Particular attention is paid to a determination of gross land use change and to the detection of specific patterns of development emerging from this change. Information derived from the mapping and tabulating of data acquired in this study indicates a definite trend toward the development of an agricultural landscape and increasing intensification of land use on the west side of the San Joaquin Valley. The introduction of water into this arid region is resulting in large acreages of land being brought under cultivation. Consequently, cropland is assuming a more dominant position with respect to areal extent.

Static stability and control effectiveness of models 12-0 and 34-0 of the vehicle 3 configuration, volume 3

Static stability and control effectiveness characteristics of two 0.004 scale models of the vehicle 3 configuration are reported. The components investigated consisted of a single aft body, vertical/rudder, OMS pods with two interchangeable wings, four interchangeable forward bodies, four trimmers, and a spoiler. The test was conducted in 14 x 14 inch trisonic wind tunnel over a Mach number range from 0.6 to 4.96. Angles of attack from 0 to 60 degrees and angles of sideslip from -10 to 10 degrees at 0, 10, 20,30, and 40 degrees angle of attack were tested. Elevon, body flap, and speed brake deflection composed the parametric considerations. No grit was placed on the models during the test. The tabulated source data and incremental data figures are presented.

Test of acoustic tone source and propulsion performance of C8A Buffalo suppressor nozzle

Results are presented for a static acoustic and propulsion performance ground test conducted at the Boeing hot nozzle facility on the C8A Buffalo noise suppressor nozzle. Various methods to remove a nozzle-associated 2000-Hz tone are evaluated. Results of testing this rectangular-array lobed nozzle for propulsion performance and acoustic directivity are reported. Recommendations for future nozzle modifications and further testing are included. Appendix A contains the test plan. Appendix B presents the test log. Appendix C contains plots of the one-third octave sound pressure levels recorded during the test. Appendix D describes the acoustic data recording and reduction systems. The performance data is tabulated in Appendix E.

Wind tunnel tests of an 0.019-scale space shuttle integrated vehicle -2A configuration (model 14-OTS) in the NASA Ames 8 X 7 foot unitary wind tunnel, volume 2

The purpose of the test was to determine the effects of cold jet gas plumes on (1) the integrated vehicle longitudinal and lateral-directional force data, (2) exposed wing hinge moment, (3) wing pressure distributions, (4) orbiter MPS external pressure distributions, and (5) model base pressures. An investigation was undertaken to determine the similarity between solid and gaseous plumes; fluorescent oil flow visualization studies were also conducted. Plotted wing pressure data is tabulated.

Transfer calibration of the transmission of electron-energy spectrometers

Relative intensities of strong peaks in the Hel photoelectron spectra of N2, CO2, CO, and O2 are tabulated. These data were measured with an electron energy analyzer whose relative transmission was calibrated to an accuracy of + or - 5%. The tables are useful for calibrating the transmission of other analyzers for electron energies below 9 eV. Correction for angular distribution effects is discussed.

Transport of liquid state nitrogen through long length service lines during thermal/vacuum testing

Physical and analytical aspects associated with the transport are presented. Included is a definition of the problems and difficulties imposed by the servicing of a typical solid cryogen system, as well as a discussion of the transport requirements and of the rationale which governed their solution. A successful detailed transport configuration is defined, and the application of established mathematics to the design approach is demonstrated. The significance of head pressure, pressure drop, line friction, heat leak, Reynolds number, and the fundamental equilibrium demands of pressure and temperature were examined as they relate to the achievement of liquid state flow. Performance predictions were made for the transport system, and several analytical quantities are tabulated. These data are analyzed and compared with measured and calculated results obtained while actually servicing a solid cryogen system during thermal/vacuum testing.
